Is anyone getting this whistle sound coming from the engine bay? I htought for sure it was my rubber IC splitter but i took it off and it wasnt it. It only happens when your on the gas. Whenever i take my foot off the pedal it stops. I cant stand it.
Also, my glovebox is making this plastic on plastic sounds. I absolutly cant stand it. Anyone got a fix?
Have you tried this :
I had the glove box rattle and what I did was wrap some black electrical tape around the U-shaped bracket the door latch attaches to. That fixed the rattle

this might sound like a retarded answer but my guess it could be your turbo spooling up, im not trying to be an ass, but you said that when you let off the gas it goes away, my car also makes a light whistling noise but i know its my turbo, thats just my opinion

I had to add to this thread while I had it all fresh in my mind. I did a dash "overhaul" rattle fix sequence tonight.
Removed A pillars, then popped up defroster dash piece.
I put electrical tape under each white clip on the defroster piece, then slide the white clips back on. Thus they are spread wider and tighter. NOTE, there are two bolts you can see while you have the defroster piece out. One of mine wasnt tight so the washer was loose. Tightened the bolt up. Then snapped the defroster dash back into place.
Removed drivers side window defroster vent. This is the vent that aims right at your drivers side window. The clip is in the front as a previous post said. this piece you pull out goes inside a larger tube you will see. the piece you pull out is only about 3-4" long. I wrapped the buttom of that defoster tube with electrical tape about 3 times. Then I shoved it back in the outer tube in dash and snapped it in place.
There is a black wire coming down the drivers side a pillar. Way up in the dash, there is a little clip that holds it to a metal plate. My plastic clip was not in the plate anymore. I pushed it in the plate (hard to reach), then electrical taped it up a couple times just for added insurance.
There are two white plastic "T" wire holders along the a pillar metal. The lower one is usually more loose and rattley. I put tape behind it and around it to keep it more solid. Then I popped out two white snappers out of that a pillar metal. They will rattle and turn if you tap them. Do not just pry, you must press the inner release clips with a mini screwdriver to get the "female" plastic snap out. Then I put a piece of electrical tape over each hole and pushed them back in till they clicked. Finally, I pulled the 3 clips off each A pillar itself. I again put electrical tape over each slot, then forced the plastic pins back into the slots. I put an added piece of electrical tape over the slot in the bottom of the a pillar piece that slides into a slot in dash. then I snapped the A pillars back in.
I did not do the "behind gauge cluster" fix yet as I dont think that was my noise. There is not much more I can fix now for the dash rattle. If it still has the noise I will be screwed.

Dilemma! Riverside Subaru of Little Rock refuses any warrantee work. And by '.', I mean PERIOD.
I installed a front sway bar and endlinks a couple weeks ago. Whenever I am in first gear, and am going less than 10mph, I hear this popping sound like tiny pebbles hitting sheet metal on the passenger side front right wheel area. I think it's either some heat shielding somewhere, or something is wrong with the axle. I've been to a couple mechanics, and they think it is the CV/axle. I took it to Subaru, and they refused to even try to fix it. They claimed that because I did suspension work, they will not warrantee any work and they basically have the worst customer service attitude of any mechanic/garage/stealership I've ever worked with. Any ideas???

once you get those bottom two screws off & the side plastic one it is only clips holding them in. tug firmly straight out. if you search there are detailed write ups on breaking down the dash.

Not fair to expect WARRANTY work when you've done mods. :furious:

search for 'endlink noise' or similar, my car did the same thing after a front sway bar upgrade, it's your endlinks, spherical endlinks are notorious for being noisy as described.

I've got a couple:
Problem: Rattling in rear driver side door when going over bumpy roads/blasting music
Solution: took off door panel and wrapped all loose wiring/tubing I saw with a thin sponge sheet and zap strapping it snug
Problem2: Rattle in that long thin panel that runs right next to the front windshield, just on the driver side close to the A-pillar, noticed it'd disappear when pressure was put on it
Solution2: Subie gal gauge pod  http://www.morrisgarage.com/wrx/pod/pictures/img_1693.jpg
Problem3: Clock pod rattles over bumps
Solution3: you can either put silicone at the top of the clips so that they'll still clip in, but as a much more snug fit, or do the less recommended method of just wrapping the clips in a single (loose) layer of masking tape so they won't wiggle but are still capable of clipping into place (this is the method I did, primarily because I was lazy)
**Could a mod please update the first post? It'd make it a lot easier since I doubt most people want to sort through most of the clutter in this thread...

Just let you know I fixed rear window rattle......
What it is you put the wd-40 on the rubber between ceiling and rear window...
you use unused credit card to lift up the thin rubber and put straw into it and apply wd-40....
with couple of apply rattle's gone....
Next up is my front belt rattle fix.......anyone come up with the solution?
I pop up the surface plastic part which is mount on over shoulder...but I couldn't find
anywhere to apply form tape on...except the empty round area where the bolt rest...
Neways...help would be appreciated...

i just did that job last week. First you remove the a pillars. then you just pull the front panel up and pop it out. I put tape under all the clips and slide them back into the panel. then I clipped the panel back on and it was much more solid.

That cricket noise was a metal plate that is bolted to the floor the passengers side under the dash. I pulled the carpet up on the passengers side, loosened the bolts, hit them with silicone spray and it went away. I noticed when my brother was tapping his toe and it replicated the cricket sound.

sometimes that cricket sound is when you step on the top part of the gas pedal. Moving it up like a "see-saw". The spring needs to be lubed

While this isn't a rattle, I think this might be helpful to someone out there. I currently have approx. 40k miles on my '05 STi and I've had a bad squeak from the trunk/wing area while driving. It's loud enough to hear in the cabin. This has been going on for 20k miles or so. I've simply assumed it was because the gasket was getting squeezed out from under the wing and it was noise from the wing rubbing the trunk lid.
The rear trunk squeak is directly related to the lift mechanism for the trunk lid. Simply lube all the points under there = squeak eliminated.

This is probably one of the best threads on here...however I've got a rattle I can't figure out. It's coming from my passenger front side, and it only happens when the car is cold. It sounds like a small squeak/rattle coming from the glovebox? Any help on this?

I soundproofed my trunk for my 12" subwoofer and it was pretty quiet for about a day, then it found the weakest link and my wing started a rattle noise. At first inspection it looked as though when the bass hit my whole wing was reverberating like a wave and making the noise.
Upon closer look it seems like the 3rd brake light in the wing is rattling INSIDE the wing as it shakes. Has anyone else had this? I'm not sure if its the bulb, or the whole third brake peice. I'm thinking a tiny peice of peal and seal or some silicone might do it. Its the only large rattle i have right now.
Nevermind. Found. I was right.

I JUST fixed this thanks to Aaron2.5. Its the trunk vents. One black box on each side.
Simply peel back the trunk liner after removing the 2 pop rivets on each side, and then removing the inside plastic latch cover by unscrewing the two plastic screw caps. Inside each black vent are two peices of black rubber that create a pressure release effectively.
when my subs hit i could see the rubber inside vibrating against the hard plastic and making that loud hum you hear. I just put my small fingers in there and ripped them out. they are small holes so they may tear and come out in peices but its not that hard to get it all out. Took less then ten minutes,
I thought it was my fender panels rattiling inside also until i was told about these.

For any that still has the "keyhole/glovebox rattle" mine was doing the same thing. I found out that the bottom part where the glovebox pivots was making noise everytime I hit a bump because it would jump up. I sprayed some 3M lube all over the bottom hinges or whatever they are and its gone.

How about the top plastic deck behind the rear seat? I removed mind, tapped up all the plastic I could see and put a small foam mat between it. And I still have this annoying rattle. And this one sounds even when the stereo is off. It kinda sounds like metal on metal. Someone mentioned the center seat beat roller thingy, but I dont see how you can adjust/tighten it. Or any other ideas on what this sound could be?
Thanks so much!

Found a real slight but possibly annoying rattle. On the rear trunk latch, on the decklid, you'll see the cable w/ a fat ball on the end for the release. It bounces around and is loose. just wedge a little felt tape in there.

I still cant get my trunk rattle to go away. Ive narrowed it down though. My trunk issue seems to be coming from the brackets that the trunk moves up and down on. Mine kinda creek when I roll over bumps or am on a bump road. Its driving me nuts! Anyone have any suggestions?

Can I pull of the passenger side air bag cover without it blowing up in my face? Something is rattling in there. Maybe I have to drive it into a tree to get it to stop??

2 things.
You can add weight to the trunk like peel and seal or dynamat type insulation. Foam or other insulation media would work too. the main thing your going for here is adding weight.
Second, you can adjust the lower latch portion. Loosen the bolt and it slides down. This makes a tighter hold with the latch to the trunk pulling it harder down. It makes it harder to open/close your trunk but not much. This helped me when i had beat in the back

Is it your glove box? Mine rattled over bumps. I adjusted the latch part on the actual glove box and it solved that issue. others put electrical tape around the "U" shaped bracket thing.

Hmm, I'll try the latch thing 1st and see what if that solves it. I will report back soon.
Thanks man!

Solution - Take stalk apart, remove button, spring and ball, stretch spring. reinsert. no more rattle

do i have to remove steering wheel to remove the cruise stalk?

didnt read 22 pages but I was fighting this one for a while.
to the left of the steering wheel its that lower part of the dash that covers and surrounds the coin holder and the fog light/intercooler sprayer buttons. the top right corner of that panel vibrates like crazy. some 3m tape on the back side of the clip should take care of it. ill let you know

I don't think mine was mentioned. I checked the others before I found mine.
High pitched squeaking/scratching from the C pillar: Remove the C pillar by pulling it off (just clips) and then the ceiling panel by clips (I broke one of mine). There is plastic piece glued to the top corner of the window that clips into a metal tab on the body. Bent the heck out of that and it stopped.

I have a terrible Squeak that comes from somewhere in the right side dashboard. It happens over bumps, but strangely its never synced to what the suspension is doing. I read one post where a dealer "used a new zip tie because a group of wires was rubbing against the transmission" but that leaves me with blank stares.
Anyone else have a squeak that sounds like its coming from the right side of the dash? I just need to know where to start taking things apart to look.
Oh, I'm sure its not the A-pillar or clock, I solved those years and years ago.

I've got one that's driving me bat**** insane.
Symptoms:
A) Intermittant (if I drive hard, it seems to go away, I'm guessing it gets 'lodged' or something)
B) It's coming from the drivers side, seemingly near the level of the bottom of the drivers seat, but to the left of me
C) it sounds like it's... rolling?
D) When I am coming to a stop, it 'rolls' forward.
E) When I come to a complete stop, it rolls backward.
It SOUNDS like a screw or something and it definitely soudns like it's rolling on plastic (I've checked the door pockets)
I recently had my window gusset adjusted by the dealership, I wonder if something fell inside the door?
In any case, the thing that has me really confused is due to the inertial forces that cause the rolling to occur... it seems that the object is either in a 'pendulum' motion, or on a backwards decline (reverse incline?)
Thanks for any insight! *subscribed*

Well, I found a fix for my rear window rattle.....a temporary one at least. It was coming from the rear passenger side, around where the glass meets the sheet metal. There are some clips right there on the outside, and the rattling will cease by lifting up the rear glass moulding and spraying a silicone lubricant all along the channel. This is a temporary fix....but last time I did it, it lasted about 8 months. Sprayed it again the other day, and hopefully should be good until around x-mas.....Hope this helps anyone with a similar dilemna.

I took my vin plate rattle to my local dealer. They said they've seen it before and know people have tried silicone on the white clips. The master mechanic actually ordered a new windshield defroster trim piece for me because he knows he'll accidentally break the clips when he mess with them. I highly doubt this will solve the rattles, would you think the dealer will be willing to do the silicone thing for me if i bring them the silicone?

Anyone else have this issue!?
On my 08 WRX sedan the rear deck/cargo plastic cover vibrates uncontrollably under load, over bumps or when accelerating. Its like the exhaust or tranny is shaking it, sounds like a giant bumble bee. Is there anything that can be done? Dealer visit? I know creeks and rattles between crevasses is normal, but this is ridiculous. I can't take it anymore, I almost want to take it out completely.
FIXED: My spare tire was not tightened!

A few things that I've done to retain my sanity:

Rear driver's side seat belt area rattle:
I removed everything from the rear of the car back to find this one. Rear seats, pillar cover, seat belt, rear dash (don't know what it's called) and gutted the trunk. The rattle was coming from right where the seat belt connects to the side of the car, above the strut. I siliconed clips, stuck foam everywhere, nothing worked. Finally I figured that it was coming from somewhere above the wheel well between the inside and outside metal body of the car. So, I took a towel and shoved it through the trunk (having it gutted) up above the wheel well of the driver's side rear wheel. Drove around a bit, rattle was gone. I then removed the towel and took some 1" thick high density foam strips and shoved them up where the towel was. Drove around a bit, no rattle. Put the entire back end back together and haven't heard it since. Now the other side rattles a bit... :unamused:

VIN/defroster/pillar rattle:
I still haven't found a permanent solution to this one. I've siliconed clips, siliconed the back bracets of the VIN plate, put foam all around under the defroster strip and pillar. I've taken out the window defroster and lined it with felt. The only thing I've found that eliminates the rattle is pressure on top of the defroster vent cover. So, unfortunately, I have a few pieces of cardboard taped together and wedges in there for the time being. I'd love to fix it for real but at least I don't have to have suicidal thoughts while driving down the road anymore.

Steering column cover rattle:
This one was rattling the day I picked up the car. To fix it I took it off, put it back on, and then on both sides of the ignition keyhole, I took some electric tape and pulled both sides of the cover tight together and taped them. It hasn't rattled since.

Trunk rattle from subwoofer:
I had a rattle that I couldn't hear in the cabin, but when I opened the trunk and had something with heavy bass playing, it was rattling like crazy. There are two "vents" of some sort on both sides of the trunk behind the interior liner, right behind both rear wheels. It's a black, square shaped unit with small squares cut out and thin pieces of plastic that rest against it. It's hard to describe, but when the bass would hit, the little plastic strips would rattle. They're meant to be loose I think, allowing air in to the trunk  or something. I just took a couple pieces of foam and wedged them in there so that each little vent would stay open. Anyways, if you have a crazy rattle in the trunk, look behind the interior panels on the sides and you'll see what I'm talking about. It doesn't rattle now.

Driver's side seat belt sticking noise:
This isn't really a rattle, but it's still annoying. I haven't found a solution to it. When the driver's seat belt is buckled, it kind of squeaks and creaks as I'm driving. Every time there is a little tension or slack on the belt, it makes this noise. I don't know if I can just lube it up somewhere down in the belt mechanism or what.
Great thread that's given me some ideas for solutions.
