You want to be around the 6" range when shooting to give a more smoother finish.
Came off with a pressure washer??? Honestly, I abused my wheels with pretty much everything and nothing has peeled. Even with harsh wheel cleaners and dressing. Still holds up good. In the year and a half i had it on,the only thing i noticed was it thinning out and slowly exposing the finish i dipped.

Is it possible to get this colour with plasti dip??
I am planning to dip my winter wheels but I don't like full black,
and the gun metal grey looks a bit too light....
maybe few coats of black and smoke??
I'm new to this, any help will be appreciated :p

Has anyone tried painting on top of plast dip? I'm thinking of dipping my roof rails and then spraying the STI logo on them. I assume that should work, but I wanted to see if anyone has attempted it.

From what I understand, there's some type of glossifire that you can spray on top of the plastidip that will gloss it up. I'm not sure if its made by the some company or not though.

Lots of people have painted on top of Plasti-Dip, from what i have read it simply makes it harder to get off later.

DO not prime or sand before you plasti dip. Just wash your car, and make sure its dry. I tried peeling the crap off of my sanded trunk and It doesn't peel well at all (which is bad if you need to re-do it)
I did my entire car using cans. Took me 15, and I absolutely love it.

^ I highly advise it. 15 cans at 6$ a can was a cheap/ affordable paint job. Get a sprayer though.... hah

Well, i'm a bass player so I've got meaty fingers but man, talk about cramping up to the max. I'll definately invest in a sprayer eventually.

I basically did around 6-10 solid layers at least. For example: I'd start and do a layer on one fender, then do a layer on the opposite side, and let dry or move onto another part of the car. The key is to really get a good coat and LET IT SETTLE/DRY to form the solid coat.

Get one of these for the big jobs. I do a lot of wiper arms and steelies at work and it is a big improvement over the finger cramps associated with such work.
Just finished some of my trim. 4 coats, 35 minutes in between coats. Am I not getting a good cover on it? It's more textured than I'd like. More coats? Hold the can closer? I'm spraying from 8-12" away.
I'd like it to come out a little more glossier than this. Can I adjust and do another 1-2 coats to get that or should I start over?

If you want less texture, first peel off everything that you started with, make sure it's clean and ready to go again. Next, when you're re-doing it spray with with the same distance 8-12" away, BUT do one layer at a time. At first you will see the silver from the console showing through, but when you keep adding layer upon layer it will slowly go away. Trick is - light coats, let each one dry and keep going until its fully covered. I'd say about 8 thin coats will make one nice smooth texture!

I've gotten smooth texture by doing very thick coats. But that also wastes more.

It wouldnt help to do thicker coats. (Would only increase your screw-up rate)
What does help though - is doing 5-7 coats where you start slow, and the silver should shine through in at least the first coating.
I also hope that you are not doing this with the panels attacked to the dash, but outside? :)
plastidip bonds to about everything! it is a huge pain to get off anything you don't mean to have it on. i use it often for wire joints that need to be waterproof, also use it for tools and RC car electronics. (servos can be dipped in plasti-dip)
What he said. They also make rubber-dip if you find that will help you in anyway. It comes in (well came in it's been a while since I used it) a container that looks almost like a tube of silicone and as you use it and the amount in the tube lowers you cut the top off and recap it. One thing though is it doesn't like cold and it doesn't have a long shelf life. But I used it all the time in car audio. It comes in at least black and red so I would tape up my terminals, dip the ends of my wire in the rubber, let it set just a bit then peel the tape off and voila, ain't nothing conducting electricity except the part you taped. You then need to let the rubber set the rest of the way. I came up with the idea all by myself, only to find out the big boys in car audio had been doing it for years and just keeping it secret.
If you get the cocking gun style don't load it into a cocking gun, just dip it like I mentionedfar better results.

I'm not him but I've used plasti-dip a lot and that is exactly what it looks like. I've never put it in an engine bay but this stuff does not want to come off. Practice before you try it on an important piece or you might just find yourself ordering a new piece to avoid the misery of trying t get the plasti-dip off. So the heat I could picture it making it even harder to come off. Besides the pieces he did don't get excessively warm.

I'm very curious to know how this holds up on alloy wheels for any of you who have used it for a few season. It sticks like hell to plastics, but alloy I would need feedback
Also, this thread started in 07, we have been using this stuff in car audio since 02-03 though I think it was called something else at the time, but the same stuff. Here is one of the competition cars with it on the plastic pieces. The leather is obviously just orange leather so don't go trying to PD your leather.

And the stuff is tuff as nails. 10 years in that daily driver it still looks like the day we painted it. So long as you prep right and spray it right you would destroy the piece trying to remove the PD, it adheres and lasts that well, it's amazing.
p.s. That car decor is not my taste but it's what the owner wanted. But in Iasca world finals no one ever beat him in Sound quality in his class, in fact it wasn't till you got to the pro classes that people would beat him in SQ scores, it was that good. The only reason he kept taking 2nd every year and 3rd one year was because he had some install integrity issues which killed his score and he didn't want to fix them. In his defense they would have been a pain in the butt to fix but I would have done it. He would have been unbeatable. But sound quality wise, it was damn near perfect. After tuning was done we would sit in it for hours just listening to music saying, I never knew there was a Cello in there. Even crappy pop music had so much going on that you could not hear before that it made it almost listenable. You haven't experienced Dark Side of the Moon till you've heard it in a car like that.

Even crappy pop music had so much going on that you could not hear before that it made it almost listenable. You haven't experienced Dark Side of the Moon till you've heard it in a car like that.
^ is all the red in your engine bay dipped as well? I've been skeptical of using it under the hood because of all the heat. Does it hold up well?
Yep, that's plasti-dip in the engine bay. The dipstick was actually done with the "dip" style plasti-dip and everything else was rattle cans. I even did all of the yellow caps black. So far it's held up with no problems at all. The various reservoir caps have a tendency to get the edges rubbed if you are in there working/pulling wires, etc.
I've dipped my wife's Honda Ridgeline wheels and grill as well, which is where I learned about the importance of having enough layers and thickness on. I had to cut them both about 2-3 layers short because of impending weather. The removal process was tedious, but goof-off melts it right off.
If you get enough layers on, it literally peels back in a giant rubber sheet.

Yeah I did my entire car, and I found that a heat gun works too for the stuff you didn't get enough layers on. I'll have to dip my engine bay like that. LOVE red accents. I dipped the insides of my retrofit, may need more layers though in the future.

It wouldnt help to do thicker coats. (Would only increase your screw-up rate)
What does help though - is doing 5-7 coats where you start slow, and the silver should shine through in at least the first coating.
I also hope that you are not doing this with the panels attacked to the dash, but outside? :)
I suppose I don't know my own experience. Everybody is an expert.

Don't listen to that .. it's perfectly acceptable. It's actually an extremely popular money saving tip. One Sharpie worth of makeup is like $263.42 in eyeliner and brow pencils.
You really can't beat it.

Right. And anything done incorrectly looks bad. Even paint. Plasti dip done right looks great!

Just dipped my winter wheels over the weekend. Color is "blaze green" from dipyourcar.com. The pics don't do justice at all. They're MUCH brighter in person...almost like a highlighter green.

+1. I'm just not a fan of the colored wheels that don't match the overall paint color. It looks tacky but to each their own.

Anyone knows? how much plastidip (400ml cans) I would need for a hole car, except hood?

Hmm ok. I can't buy the car kit, because they don't ship it to Europe.

I drive a sedan. And keep in mind I didn't do my roof. Id say 16 cans is a safe number.

Ok, I'll do the hood and trunk in another color anyway, but thank you ;) for that, I think 4 is enough.
How was the result? The pictures looked good. No orange skin?

Thinking about plasti-dipping my roof black, has atone used the glossifier? Does it actually work? I jus don't really want the flat or matte color.

not solely on the prep work, but mostly the spraying of the paint itself, and the way it was finished. im thinking about doing a matte clear on some parts for winter like that evo in the member gallery
