Did they want Montoya to wait until the whole field passed him by in the pits? Thats crazy!!!
Maybe Ferrari is on the mend?
Maybe, but Alonso, Trulli, Montoya, Button, and Fisi all retiring really helped the two red cars move up the field.
And the coverage was horrible. The combination of useless drivel and flat out incorrect information was just painful.

definitely. it was hard to listen to Daly guess at everything that was going on.
i was pleased to see Big Red at least take some points, but having all of those drivers out of the race certainly helped that along. Schumi sure gave Kimi a run at the end though.
does the wall of champions still say "Welcome to Quebec" on it?

And its over, hes done, its all over, hes done.
He doesn't suck that bad when he covers CART but when he covers F1 he just won't shut up! Hey, heres a clue, when you see that little box on the screen that says team radio, how about you shut the eff up!
I hope JPM can win the USGP. That would make hime the 1st to win on both courses and I think he needs redemption from 03.

I see a lot of people complaining. At least F1 is interesting for once. I was tired of seeing Ferrari in the #1 spot after almost every race. This season has been fun to watch. To see Kimi win less than 2 seconds ahead of Michael was exciting. I can't wait for next week.

Did anyone notice that CBS was advertising coverage for GP Germany? While I'm not terribly fond of their coverage, they must be getting decent ratings (or big incentives from Bernie) if they're carrying additional races.
| bemani | 06-12-2005 06:35 PM |
They were scheduled for showing 4 races.
I loved how they try to get one or 2 words in during team radio! They must get paid by the number of garbage they spew out.
LMAO moment : Renault pit crew holding new tire ready for changing, and Sheheen tells the world that its the punctured tire.

Bring back Jason Priestley!!1!1  Seriously, the coverage was pretty brutal, but it did have its bright spots. For instance, how many times during Speed coverage have we ever seen an interview during the race (the interview with Briatore after Alonso crashed out)? I wish we got to see more stuff like that.
How about the start by the frickin' Renaults!! I mean, I know they always have good starts, but they absolutely blitzed Jensen and Schumi! That was damn impressive. All in all a pretty exciting race, some tough breaks for some of the front runners. You don't win (or podium) if you don't finish, so you can't fault Ferrari for putting both cars on the podium because the other teams couldn't get their cars the full distance.
Edit: From another forum...
UK coverage was pretty good - I watched the last 20 or so laps. A female reporter found Button walking....and reminded him this race didn't help his points chase ( duh ). His comment..."Thanks for that".
See, so our announcers aren't the complete worst. I was sorry to see Jensen screw himself and crash out, I like him a lot.

JPM's Black Flag - rules question

so does anyone know the rules on re-joining the race under SC? If it were green could he have re-joined the pack mid-way, or is it always red light untill the pack passes?

I just had it when they pull out a chart comparing F1 cars and NASCAR cars. COME ON!!!!
| Dussander | 06-12-2005 08:36 PM |
They seemed to imply it was a red light so he wouldn't have issues running into the safety car, but if that is true, why didn't the red light this car:

Dussander, they didn't black flag him because he's SEVEN TIME WORLD CHAMPION MICHAEL SCHUMACHER. Sorry, I did my best trying to be a CBS commentator. Oh, BTW, did I mention they have carbon fiber brakes and Ferrari finished 1-2?
CBS needs to find some decent commentators who actually know what's going on. Decent camera coverage though.
JPM's black flag is pure BS. They definitely could have done a drive through penalty instead.

I think CBS threw up the F1/NASCAR car comparison because they figure most US viewers probably watch some NASCAR and they wanna show how much more l337 F1 is than NASCAR to draw in that crowd. :) Afterall, I believe CBS is broadcasting F1 on a trial basis right now, so if their ratings increase, they might keep airing F1 next year. Nonetheless, it's too bad that F1 is so unfamiliar in the States that the commentators dumb down everything.

Montoya's DQ means he gets to qualy first next race and they don't include his time in the fastest lap charts (2nd) for the race. Anyone know where I can read up on all the safety car rules? I've always been a little confused on how the fine details work about pitting and ordering during the safety car.
| Dussander | 06-13-2005 12:12 AM |
I found this somewhere:
"While the safety car is in operation, competing cars may stop at their pit, but may only rejoin the track when the green light at the end of the pit lane is on. It will be on at all times except when the safety car and the line of cars following it are about to pass or are passing the pit exit. A car rejoining the track must proceed at an appropriate speed until it reaches the end of the line of cars behind the safety car."
It seems that went in to effect after Indy last year.

He got it at the begining of this year. It is basically the same of the past few with a all red except for the german flag meeting in a stripe on both sides but this year he added a little red stripe that goes through the center of the flag. I am not a fan of it. I like the simplicity of the other one with the black of the flag going across the top of his visor.
BTW I absolutely love helmet designs.

I was in London for the race and got to catch their coverage of ther race (I can't remember who the commentators were, but I've heard their names before) and it was quite good. They pretty much had the same world feed, but they also had a reporter with a cameraman who got interviews with people (Trulli, Fishi, Button, Flavio, etc) during the race which is pretty nice.
One of my favorite quotes they had was - 'Montoya and mistake are too often used in the same sentence.'

For adevertising purposes I think it works pretty well compard to the plain white box. The BAR code look and the black stripe really do make you think of Marlboro but as far as looks go I give it the poo. I like it when they are more invintive with tabaco replacement such as Buzzin Hornets rather then Benson and Hedges or even BARs wierd traget thing from this weekend. I also liked when Renualt ran the Driivers name and huge number instead of the Mild Seven.

Race was awesome. Got some great photos. But montreal was HOT! I only stopped sweating the whole weekend during the two hours we spent playing craps in the casino. Cut down on bathroom visits, though.
I thought that it was awesome they brought Sato back out after what seemed like retirement.
And by the sounds of it, I didn't miss much by not having any commentary.

What I don't get is that they don't even sell Marlboros in Quebec (or all of Canada?) so what's the harm in letting them throw Marlboro on the side? Regardless of the influence, you couldn't find anywhere to buy them anywhere. Not even the duty free border has Marlboros.

Once in a while I used to buy Marlboros at the convienence store when I lived in Ontario... That was 10 years ago though, maybe things have changed, or Quebec is different. You can certainly get Benson & Hedges though.

Pit photos are my favorite. Those are the ones that you don't get to see on the broadcast. Last year's Indy coverage that Speed has was the stuff of dreams. When Steve Matchett got that huge amount of access to the Ferrari garage was just awesome. the amount of detail that goes into a racing car makes me drool.

Did Ferrari borrow William's launch control?
If Shumchaer could of had a better start he might have his first win of the season. The bridgestones are giving him the double whammy of putting him in the middle of the grid AND not coming up to temp fast enough. If he could start from pole and hold on to throught the 1st corner I know he would be able to keep people behind him until they came up to proper temps.

Despite picking Button, Trulli, and Montoya in the top 6, I somehow came away with 29 points. Oh...if only brake discs would not have exploded, or the wall of champions was less painful or red lights did not exist...
giving you a total score of 289.
This put you in position 807 for the round, and in
position 12 (of 3426) in the overall competition."

Well, you didn't gain any on me... ;) Congrats on the 12th place overall!
"Your pick for the Canadian GP scored 29 points,
giving you a total score of 268.
This put you in position 807 for the round, and in
position 152 (of 3426) in the overall competition."
I got Kimi correct, MS and DC off by one position, and Rubio off by 5 for 3 points. Everyone else (Alonso, Heidfeld, Trulli and JPM) were big goose eggs... Let's see, I swapped DC for Webber, so I'd have still been one off either way. No gain, no loss. This is a fun year! :D

Wow, I won our group for the round. As for the race weekend, it was typical Montreal party fun. Our seats were excellent (our first time in 1) and we got to see some good drama unfold in front of us. Suprisingly I found myself rooting for Juan in the race as he was really giving the Renaults hell. I thought the stewards decision to black flag him was kneejerk and assinine. On a sidenote, my dad's car sucked for the road trip, can anyone recommend a good place for kidney belts?  Anyways, I am looking forward to the USGP this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. We have seats in the north end of grandstand H and will again be taking the kidney grinder, if anyone sees us say hi, I would like to meet anyone from NASIOC.

Who Would've Guessed Ferraris On The Podium?

Prior to opening practices, back on Wednesday, I posted the following:
Wow! I just noticed that of the picks that have been posted so far, a majority, 4 of 7, have placed Michael Schumacher on the podium.
Well confession time... I did not put Michael on the podium, and I paid a dear price. Whereas those who picked Ferrari's on the podium, really cleaned up!
Congrats to SolbergWRCfan/Jon for a nice score of 39 points to win the Canadian round! And the lucky bastahd got to see the race live as well! Way to be! :)

I don't understand how anyone can think the stewards decision to black flag Montoya was anything but completely legit. It's a very clearly written rule that he blatantly violated, and after that he started wrestling for position with DC behind the safety car! I too was rooting for him, as I thought it was going to be a really exciting finish with him, Kimi, and MS, but how STUPID can you get?

From F1live.com:
Formula One audiences increased dramatically for the Canadian GP last weekend compared with 2004.
In the UK, ITV1s live broadcast of the race drew +50% more viewers than last year, no doubt due to the pole position of Jenson Button, which showed that returning to single Saturday qualifying is beneficial to audiences.
Other European countries also experienced rises: Germany (+2%) and Italy (+10%) showed signs of recovery, whilst Spanish audiences continue their meteoric rise, almost doubling since last year. The live race transmission in France was cut short due to the homecoming of the hostage from Iraq.
With the Championship wide open, and no less than six teams competing for top honours each race weekend, Formula One audiences are poised to continue the upward trend.

On Montoya, Safety Cars, and Stupity @ Montreal
I don't understand how anyone can think the stewards decision to black flag Montoya was anything but completely legit...
A stop and go, or drive-through would have clearly been the appropriate, or strongest, justifiable penalty for that infraction.
Another mistake the Canadiens made is rolling their beloved Safety Car for a normal dead car on course. We now know that w/o the safety car, Montoya would have won, since McLaren was going to have Juan and Kimi hold station at first and second respectively. McLaren knew that Juan was fast, and Kimi had the steering problems.
We wouldn't even be talking about this silliness if those Canadiens would figure out how to run an F1 race with out rolling out their beloved Safety Cars! Every year they destroy the natural flow of their F1 race by rolling their SC at least once, if not multiple times during the race. They need to install high cranes, and other methods of removing dead cars from the course, so that they can stage a proper F1 race.
F1 should pull Montreal from the calendar until they make the needed changes to prevent rolling a safety car.

...in other news, use of the phrase "bloody sodding idiot" also increased by 50% over last year.
