Gotta warn you--installation is not trivial. I got the better quality, thicker version and had a lot of problems fitting trim, etc. due to the thickness. This is not a "kit" where it just drops into place. The carpet is molded into vaguely the same shape as the floor, but it is oversize and there are no holes cut in it. Also, the plastic moldings that the stock carpet has attached to it to hold it in sensitive areas (like the door sills) are missing.
You'll end up getting stinky, sticky carpet adhesive all over the place. Why? Because the factory clips that fit perfectly on the stock carpet will either break when you remove them, or you won't be able to match them up with their holes, or the new carpet will be thicker than they're designed for. Oh, and don't make the mistake of laying the old carpet on top and cutting holes to match, or you'll be waaay off. :(
In short, plan on a good long day to do it in your driveway, with plenty of trial fitting, cursing and frustration. Paying an upholstery shop a couple of hundred bucks would be a bargain!
Thanks for the info. Besides the doorsills, what are the other parts of the install that are difficult? How is the carpet attatched under the back seat and under the center console? Up front is where the bolt holes are if I remember... are there any other points of difficulty to take into account? Also with the fitting to the doorsills, does the carpet literally have to be glued into place and the doorsills jammed on top? I definately want to do this install myself, but am still not sure if I should get the thick or regular carpet.
Also if anyone has pics of their installed carpet, etc., that would be excellent!
thanks
jonathan

I'll give this a shot.
When the carpet arrives it will be a SOLID piece of carpet , no holes. When it's laid out on the ground it will be obvious which end goes where, the carpet is molded, it looks identical to the inside of the car with all the seats and center console removed.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thanks for the info. Besides the doorsills, what are the other parts of the install that are difficult?
---->The holes for the front seats, and less cutting the hole for the shifter/parking brake.
How is the carpet attatched under the back seat and under the center console? Up front is where the bolt holes are if I remember... are there any other points of difficulty to take into account?
---->Reuse the retainers and holes that were there when you removed the oe carpet. You will have to cut two squares for the center console area. Again, cut it exactly like the oe carpet and you can't go wrong.
Also with the fitting to the doorsills, does the carpet literally have to be glued into place and the doorsills jammed on top?
---->The doorsills were the last part I did. I just left an extra 1" of carpet under each sill. I suppose some of that snot glue could do the same for reassuarance.
I definately want to do this install myself, but am still not sure if I should get the thick or regular carpet.
---->Of course both are better than stock.
The question is how much money do you want to spend.....get the PLUSH if you plan to keep the car another 3+ years
Albert-
Thanks a lot for the info! It sounds like as long as my razor cutting ability is decent, I should be ok. I would have no problem getting the plush carpet, I was just concerned if the install with the plush stuff would be more difficult.
cindergarden: I PMed you. I just found out about this thread today. I have some samples on the way so I can decide on what color... but in the mean time, please add me to this GB list!!!
Carpet group buy
I spoke with Ron today, and the group buy is now in progress. Contact him at (360) 574-8070 ot [emailprotected] to get your group prices and place your order. The group prices are $119 for nylon cut pile or $139.00 for the thicker Essex carpet. Hurry, the group buy ends April 18th.
| youthanasia | 03-31-2003 04:13 PM |
So... is he still gonna honour the price he gave to Gabe? Doesn't matter to me since I'm getting the plush carpet... :D
| svxr8dr | 03-31-2003 04:33 PM |
You would have to e-mail or call him. I'm just a messenger that lives in the same town
Impreza Group Buy
Sorry, the regular cut pile is $99.00 not $119 as was previously posted. The Essex is still $139 for the group.
| cindergarden | 03-31-2003 06:32 PM |
no offense but who are you ? has ron established the fact you and I are two different people ? Things may become a bit of a mess with two people trying to run a gb in the same thread :rolleyes:
| svxr8dr | 03-31-2003 06:37 PM |
I live within about 3 miles of Ron, I went by to see samples and he actually posted the message under my username. I will keep quite as to avoid any confusion.
Anyone have a pic of this stuff? I would love to see how this stuff looks.
| cindergarden | 03-31-2003 09:56 PM |
just curious thats all , hey any input is great , it just seemed as though you were trying to double the GB and i was starting to get confused myself too
| cindergarden | 03-31-2003 10:19 PM |
ok Update time ....... I Will be closing all interest and jumping on this GB on April 24th , so that gives those of you who are still in the process of picking colors to do so ,and those of you to get back to me have time too. at the end of each week ill post a msg with the updates as to whom has confirmed and what they will be getting to varify it .. then we can take it to the next level once we're set
You e-mail the guy [emailprotected] after you looked at the carpet colours you might want at www.autoupholsterykits.com under the ACS colors. After that, PM cindergarden of your carpet choice, color, how many you want, your name and e-mail so he can get a hold of you when the group buy starts. Alternatively, you can e-mail him (his e-mail is somewhere on this thread :p)
This is the Essex (thick stuff) charcoal in color. I did not do the install. I live in the same town as Ron Fryer so I paid to have it done, the installer said it was very tough due to the thickness, unlike the stock carpet there is pad on 100% of the back of the Essex, in the pics you may notice it still needs to settle a little but it is going well. I am extremely happy with this!!! You will also notice on the drivers side that there is one of those foot/heel pads on the carpet built in.
Agree, the charcoal is not the closest to color to stock, but it looks a lot better with ourgrey interior.
From a earlier post I made last month.......
Hi everyone, I was the one that set up the mold and the first buy with Ron Fryer. He's a great guy to work with and was very patient throughout the eight month "ordeal".
The Essex plush carpet is super quality, plush, no shedding, no matting, no bald spots, carpet has been installed now 11 months.
BTW their cheaper regular cut pile carpet is ALSO better quality than the oe Subaru carpet.
It was a b to install, knees were sore and almost raw, back pain for 2+ weeks but it was well worth it. If you got the money pay an upholstery shop to do it, you wont be as mad
I got the Essex Charcoal #CA-1038 (if part #'s are still the same) and it matches the interior perfectly.
Enjoy
How much is shipping?
How much better is the Essex than the $99 stuff?
Does everyone agree that the charcoal is the way to go? With WRX seats? What about Brighton interior? It might be a little lighter than RS stuff. Still grey. The seats match alright. With carpet, maybe better?
