aww that sucks... i'm headed out tomorrow afternoon... if i ever finish my work
KC 08-02-2006 08:56 PM

See, that's the other 1/2 (work). I got told friday that next Tues-Thurs I'm going to Pittsburgh. Canada+Pittsbugh wouldn't be that big a deal. Wife with broken foot and gone Thurs-Monday then Tues/Thurs... that's a much bigger deal. Especially taking care of the horse.

What about the beauty pageant daughter - who's going to take care of her? :D

She's off playing tennis on a scholarship.

Good luck to all competitors.

I had envisioned going earlier this year until our corporate offices decided to hold meetings in St. Louis.

Where's the irony in that? Aa Canuck in the US during Canadian Nationals, and even if I was home, the drive is >3200kms (~2000miles) or >30-hours driving.

Big bloody continent we live on eh?

So how was it?
angryfist 08-07-2006 11:48 AM

well... you want the good news or the bad news?

The lot was fairly small compared to what we normally run locally. Also very very bumpy. not as broken up as peru or forbes but the course was setup in the bumpy sections which caused major problems. i dont know if they even tried to work around the bad sections or not. I bottomed out multiple times and in some points even bounced so bad it threw me 4ft off course into a cone  one competitor bounced and hit his head on his rollcage and was unable to move. emergency help came and got him out of the car and to the hospital. hopefully he is ok. i did not see what happened so thats all i know about that through word of mouth.

Good:
crazymonkeyracing represented team america with one frist place victory and two second place victories. 1&2 in STX and 2nd in ESP (on street tires). Could have probably gotten 1st in ESP but then we hit a problem.... which leads to the bad news...

Bad:
Good bye tranny... :(
jcroy66 08-07-2006 12:32 PM

No!!!!!!!! :(

The courses were very different from day 1 to day 2. Both were very bumpy in sections, causing you to have to be gentle going into them or you'd be in trouble. Day 1 was pretty tight and technical with small gates in sections that made you be very precise or very slow. Day 2 was alot more open and rewarded those with giant nuts and very tight harnesses. Yes, one driver bounced hard enough to hit his helmet on the rollbar padding and make him dizzy. Quick thinking and vigilent organizers brought in the emergency crews to ensure he was alright and extraced him in the safest manner possible. Thankfully he was the last car on hs last run of the weekend. It really only held up results and awards.

We bottomed out a few times each day as well but managed not to break anything. The rules up north allow more mods in SP so we were up against fully stripped track cars and cammed motors. I was able to take an early lead on day 1 with my only clean run and stretch it out on day 2 for the win in DSP. I got to within .1 of FTD until a Z06 and then a BSP STi decided to just go for broke and open a 1+ second gap to FTD. For me, it was mission accomplished. Good competition, excellent hospitality and made new friends along the way.

The 3hr wait at the Peace Bridge border took all the wind out of our sails and we struggled to fight the z monster on the rest of the way home.

Overall, it was a well-run event though I'm sure another 100 competitors would have made it alot better for the hard working organizers.

OK, the bumps sound like a MAJOR problem. The bumps were so bad that someone was actually immobile after they hit their (helmeted I presume) head on their rollcage? HOLY COW. Yikes! Hope the guy is ok!! :(

Also super bad news about the tranny. I'll PM you about options. Maybe we should sticky a "so you need a new tranny, huh??" thread here in Motorsports for all us STX WRXs. :p :(

Which is why I never threw away the one that I had last year; only 1st gear is toast as far as I know. One of these days I'll rebuild it and swap that back in as it had better synchros than the one I have now.

Yes, I have transmission favortism.

First the driver is okay and released from hospital. we took every precaution as he hit his head on his cage and was feeling very dizzy. It was a freak accident. In these cases its always better to be safe then sorry.

I just finished speaking to him and he is sore is all. thinks his belts may have stretched a bit and his car is very very stiffly sprung, hes laying it down to freak accident.

yes the course was rough, we spent 3 hours saturday night looking for ways to avoid the bad spots and came up with the best line possible given what we had to work with. I have been to many of your events down there and you guys are blessed with some fine pieces of property to use and unfortunately this was the best we had available at the time. we tried hard to find another lot but ....................

I'd like to thank everyone who came down, you were all excellent competitors and showed some of our guys a thing or 2.

Very glad to hear the guy is ok!

I think that the event organizers did a great job of making the courses as fun and safe as possible within the site. Note that stock classed cars went through the rough stuff with little trouble. Us folks that stiffen the crapola out of the cars, payed the price! Even the tremendously successful ZZYZX suspension had it's hands full trying to make the best of some sections. In the end, everybody ran the same course and got out of it what they put into it.

Biggest props out to the event organizers for a great event!

Tony, I never got around to saying goodbye after the awards ceremony, We'll see you again soon! Thanks for the advice and truly awesome stories from Targa!

PS: yeah, Z06= G.J. Dixon....complete with the huge rebel flag hanging in the trailer!!!! They kindly loaned us some topsecret 'vette juice to keep us from fuel starving. Mighta been the key to our success! :)
angryfist 08-07-2006 03:13 PM

yeah the course was fun. specially day 2 where i was flying sideways all the way around the back corner with the foot to the floor  that turn was sooo fun.

the zzyzx suspension held up great even though it got the crap beat out of it through all the bumps. top notch stuff ;)

I'm working on getting you the info on the wheels......hang tight.

I had a lot of fun at the event. I didn't really have much for Alex and Jason as they took the top spots in STX, but I did my best to keep it somewhat respectable. I think I was within 1.1 seconds on the first day and 0.6 for the second. I managed to fight off the rest of the class and take home 3rd, making it an all USA podium!

On a side note, I agree with Jason. That back corner, or even the last half of the course was awesome. I finally got the car handling the way I'd like and I was able to put the power down. After the 90 deg corner (after the slalom) I didn't hit the brakes again until the finishline corner. Foot to the floor, only lifting to get turn-in.

All the pictures I've seen so far are great. I've got a few of my own I'll be posting later. I took some pretty sweet photos of Jason's car...with the color focus option. Lets just say I made those wheels stand out even more!

Ok...so I finally remembered to get my photos up. They can be found HERE.
