Carbon Wide Body Kit part 14

steve_d 10-08-2004 07:01 AM

don't pick on aerosim because this thread has been going on since....welll...ever...

Do any of you know what it really takes to MAKE your own new product from scratch? esp. something as elaborate as a bodykit? It doesn't sound like steve has many folks working for him, it'll be done...

It's also why most engineering/developers dont' post ANYTHING about what they're doing until there's a finished tested product. sometimes development takes time.

If the molds are done, suddenly the kit starts paying for itself...build them man!!!!

Steve, PM me if you need any advice or help...I design truck accessories for a living...I know the pitfalls of trying to build something and it taking FOREVER...

4 years though? 4 years is PLENTY of time for 1 person or a company to create a mold. Hell, I bet I could design a front and rear bumper for the GC8 given the right instructions and materials in less than a year, even with my busy schedule.

I think aerosim dug themselves a hole in 2001 and haven't been able to get out of it since. By the time it's finished, GC8's will be rusted and gone.

Hey, at least by the time it's actually done, I might actually be able to afford it. So that deserves a .

There is a little more to the story than "dug themselves a hole". If Steve wants to elaborate, I will leave it up to him. There were a couple things beyond his control that made him unable to build this kit as fast as naysayers like you would have liked.

Hey Steve - I'm gonna cruise by this evening, I'll be in the neighborhood :D
mrbell 10-08-2004 07:44 PM

Also, I don't think there were many instructions on how to do this... AND it's not just making molds, it's making all the equipment and stuff to make molds and the kit...

Yeah, I think the whole story is in this thread somewhere. If anyone wants to hear the whole story, come on over and I'll tell you over a couple beers.

A huge thanks has to go out to everyone who's supported me and understand how much money and hassle this has been. Just take a look at all of the aborted parts that never got made. And, I have no idea what the Mercedes SLR reference is ... if I had McLaren's facilities and Mercedes' money, I could have gotten it done a lot sooner.

See ya later Larry.

Steve--what about the fiberglass parts--are they a go or no go? I think if I can muster up the money I would like cf fenders with fiberglass bumpers--since they're going to get bumped anyway :)
How long have you guys been waiting for this kit?
Since 2002. or roughly 2 years longer than I've been a nasioc member. And I'm going to keep waiting. Hopefully, by the time the kit's available, I'll not only be able to afford it, but I'll be able to to afford the house and the garage i'll need to have so I can store it and buff it with a diaper.

I'm still going to make some fiberglass kits, or part kits. I'm probably going to make a couple of wet lay-up carbon kits just to test out the molds, fitment, etc. before I waste a bunch of cash on prepreg carbon, so as soon as I have some time I'll start on those.

Anybody else waiting to do a repaint till after this kit becomes available? Anybody else envision that moment where you stop modding your car and say "it's perfect" not happening until after your car is wrapped in Steve's kit?

Yeah, I sort of figured I wasn't alone.

A year ago I went down to Aerosim and thanks to Kim, got the see the GC8 and hear a bit of what goes on with the kit. All I have to say is wow. I can't beleive that amount of work that is going into this kit, and the craftsmanship. Its fine to buy a foriegn bumper and have it not fit well and get on with your life, but this kit is amazing.

All the non-believers will be quiet when the final product is out.

Rich

STEVE- get that guy from Prodrive that was suppoed to come down, tell him Rich sent you and he needs his door-cards! :D
MGXsport 10-15-2004 02:32 AM

Still here and waiting for the wagon kit!
Aerosim Research Ltd 10-15-2004 05:10 AM

Sniff sniff, you guys are really nice. Thanks for supporting me and waiting.

Rich - that guy with the door cards was Jeff Shu from Chaste and he decided it wasn't worth it or something and sold them off. I'm not sure what the deal is, but once I can get my head above water here, I'll see what's up.

Hey Steve... i proabably wont' beable to afford one of these beautiful looking kits... i saw that there are rear wheel spacers and the longer studs to hold the wheels on properly... now my question is .. how the heck do you space out the front wheels... do i have to order the front suspension form a real 22b????
thanks

Wayne_Coots 10-20-2004 11:13 AM

Sorry, But uh, I'm looking for some real performance not just looks. If you can't give a positive, constructive, mature remark then as you've probably herd if you can't post somthing nice don't post anything at all. Don't get on these threads just to tear others down. Besides if you think about it, how much work would you have to do to your car just to get it down to the weight of my 93sedan that weighs only 2600lb's ??? If you are at all concerned about performance then you should know how much weight affects performance. Not to mention that wth this kit you should be able to fit 265-275 width tires. Just some food for thought.
Wayne_Coots 10-21-2004 06:48 AM

Steve, did you say that you were going to produce a hood with slightly smaller hood vents to start with and then increase to the size that is in the pictures?

Two things...one, a GC8 won't do you any damned good if you're waiting for this kit. Unless you're planning on importing, you're more than likely going to want a GM6. Two...buy it anyway! You won't be disappointed!

Translation: Impreza Sedans need not apply. Coupes only.

Would it be that difficult to make one for the 4-door?

My biggest concern is: Will it fit into my garage anymore? How much wider does this kit make the car? I'd hate to go through all the trouble only to have to park outside from then on.

if you people are that impatiant go out and make your own kit or pay someone to make you some custom bodywork

Look they are trying to do this right, that takes time and in the mean time they have to work to pay the bills. It will be done when it's done, until then make your own, send donations to aerosim or just sit there quietly and wait.

Are the angles of the bumper on the sides of the air dam opening at a more obtuse angle than the 22B? From your pictures it looks like it, which I think is an improvement over the 22B bumper because the angles match the grill angles.

The bumper that's included in the kit is a replica of the Prodrive WRC 99 bumper, so it's a little different from the 22B. It also has the huge brake ducts under the turn signals.

Anyway, the kit is still happening. I finally cleared out the GC8 that was sitting in front of the oven and finished the WRX swap into it just before Christmas ... it's in our thread in the Southern California Vendor's forum if anyone's interested in checking it out. That's been a bid deal and finally frees up a load of space in the shop as well as killing a few bills in the process.

The weather's getting warm enough too ... perfect for laying up carbon.

auto-x gurus: Can you put these on an sm car, or would this push you up to Modified?

Edit: From what I gather, you can change the front and rear bumpers, front fenders, and side skirts all you like. I guess the question is can you change the quarter panels? You're allowed to change parts to accomodate allowed modificaitons, so if you need wider fenders in the rear to accomodate wider tires/wheels, and it isn't a great weight savings over the stock panels (is it?) then you can do it, right?
