Chicklet! Chicklet! - RALLY MEXICO starts March 9! part 1

WagonMonster 03-01-2007 12:40 PM

Chicklet! Chicklet! - RALLY MEXICO starts March 9!
First gravel event of the season!

Predictions?

Will Loeb show us that the C4 is a Gravel Winner?
Will the 2007 Impreza WRC not be a piece of ****?
Will the WagonMonster get arrested for stalking Loeb?

i've heard that the 07 impreza will look just like the 06. but the 08 will be that 5 door hatch that looks uber sexy!
Yotsuya 03-01-2007 01:36 PM

All that matters is they got newly homologated diffs and the Impreza can actually challenge Ford and Citroen.

hmm, maybe.. anyone else read that BF tires got hosed outa the FIA WRC series and everyone will be back on pirelli's?

i dont think Loeb will take this. I think his arm is still bothering him more than he lets on. He did fine on tarmac which is a much smoother ride than snow or gravel. I'm betting on one of the fords to win...

This is true.

I just hope it runs better than the 06
runnah 03-01-2007 02:15 PM

I hope Loeb drinks the water.
Easy Rider 03-01-2007 03:17 PM

Marcus will simply win it all.
Seb will have a flat and come 2nd.
Petter will try to prove is car is not crap - and crash out on day 2

Travis will do really well in PWRC - top 10.
Ken Block will also do well - with a suprise top 5 in PWRC

And I will be there taking pictures of all of it!
And drinking beer!
Dr. WOT 03-01-2007 03:29 PM

I'm disappointed that they are not going to a new body style for the 07/Mexico car. The new Impreza debuts in March at the NY Auto show. When Subaru changed from the bugeye to the peanut eye a few years back, they introduced the body style on the WRC car a year before it was out on the street. But now they are doing the opposite? Do not want!
Weasel 555 03-01-2007 04:10 PM

hopefully Petter n Chris will be in 1 & 2 and Travis n Ken can home in pwrc in top 10.

Hopefully that just means that they spent their development time on technical stuff that'll let the Impreza keep up with the Fords and Citroens!

This is a tough one to call. I think I'm going to stick with Marcus, simply because he had it until he crashed out last year, and like mentioned above, I think Loeb isn't quite as healed as he's letting on. And hopefully all those offs in Norway shook his confidence a little.

I think there's a good chance we could see a decent fight for the podium spots between Gronholm, Loeb, Solberg (if he can keep the car on the road) and Hirvonen.

Oh, and how could I forget: GO TRAVIS & KEN!

There's a funny story behind that picture.

Last year, after the starting Ceremony in Gunajuato, we got stuck in dead stopped traffic on the freeway back to Leon.

As luck would have it, the Kronos Citroens, on their trailer, were stuck right next to us. We hopped out of the car and started taking really goofy pics of each other in front of Loeb's car. All this, while his crew sat in their Renault Van, looking at us like we were terrorists!

Funny thing, we kept running into them all weekend, and they kept looking at us like we were insane.

Go Petter! Go Travis! Go Ken!

Good job on the title, WagonMonster.
Ha.

I'm sure Subaru is thrilled that the driver they FIRED is kicking their ass.
chimchimm5 03-02-2007 04:28 PM

BTW, why was Petter so happy about 4th in Norway? That the podium was within his grasp?

Becuase he was only hoping for 5th. :-)

Cheers! John

After Wilson's hilarious Norway exit, I was wondering... could someone piece together a video of all of his offs from the last two seasons? Maybe you could put it to the Benny Hill theme.

Well the way I see it they will either do really well or be in for a big surprise.

Don't get me wrong I am really pulling for them to kickass but it wouldn't surprise me if the had a rough maiden PWRC rally.

Petter is going to win.
Loeb DNF after drinking the local water
Gronholm will be grumpy
Mikko will be in 3rd.

There is only a handful of truly fast guys, maybe 8, in the PWRC this year. A top 10, with retirements, shouldn't be that hard. The PWRC is afterall a big tire lottery in a lot of ways.

Ken has an advantage. He doesn't have the tire restrictions that Travis does, which will be a big factor (as long as he can get the nifty supported tires still, which I would imagine he can).

... I lol'ed

I REALLY hope the 07 is as great as it's cracked up to be...

I also hope Travis does well here. I think it'll be a great eye-opener for Americans, so they can see how great the WRC really is. As long as they don't americanize it and turn it into an extreme sport, you know like jumping a WRC car... oh wait... crap.

[QUOTE=Easy Rider;17225090]Marcus will simply win it all.

Don't even try to compare Rally America to the P-WRC. Sure, I'd LOVE to see Travis walk away with a top ten win. But i highly doubt it's going to happen...

To say that Ken might post a better time than Travis. Um..

Anyway, yeah man i hope you're right.

Unless it has changed since last year PWRC competitors have a limited number of tires they can select from. Furthermore, atleast last year official PRWC drivers had to re-run a set of tires on Sunday. The tire restrictions last year made the PWRC a bit of a tire lottery in terms of who finished what, it made tire management a really big factor.

Ken, as not being a official PWRC entrant, can presumably choose from an unlimited number of tires, and I believe, if he so desires, he can put fresh tires on at every service, which gives him a potential advantage of not having to deal with tire regulations.

Of course the FIA might have changed these regulations 10 times since I looked them up last year. But I believe that the tire restrictions are atleast in part still in place on official PWRC entrants, which TP is.

Told ya...
See my post #28.
For someone who has not seen any other rallies in person than US rounds it's pretty deceptive to assume that top 5 US teams go fast.
They are faster than the rest, but they're not at Pro-Level yet.
But hey, at least they'll learn from the best this weekend :-)

Yeah he was also saying how hard of a time he and block were having during recce with the notes since they don't have to do them in RA.

Pastarana will deffiently do well in rally if he keeps with it, just no tthis weekend.

I look for him to do much better in the 08 season when he will do all the PWRC events and have a much better handle on Rallying at the WRC level.

It was an early start to the fifth round of the World Rally Championship as Rally Mexico got underway this morning with the first of 20 special stages.

Armed with the new Subaru WRC2007, Petter Solberg got off to a flying start taking the stage win and showing that the new car could well be a contender on the gravel of Mexico.

Solberg completed the 23.06 kilometre stage in 14:03.5s, pulling a three second advantage of Sebastien Loeb in his Citroen C4. Underlining Petter's pace, Chris Atkinson was third fastest in the second Impreza WRC2007.

Dani Sordo was fourth fastest in the second Citroen and seemingly much more at home on the gravel than he was the snow and ice of Finland and Norway.

The BP Ford Rally duo of Mikko Hirvonen and Marcus Gronholm were fifth and sixth fastest respectively albeit dropping 11 and 12 seconds on pace setter Petter Solberg.

Manfred Stohl was seventh fastest in his OMV Citroen Xsara while Jean-Marie Latvala rounded out the top eight in his Stobart Ford Focus.

While it was a flying start for Petter Solberg, Henning Solberg was in the wars in his Stobart entry as he rolled the Focus and while he was able to complete the stage in the battered Ford, the Norwegian would lose over three and a half minutes.

Special Stage 2 - the long 29.66 Ortega run - gets underway shortly.
