Nasioc Sponsored Pro Road-Racing Subaru

How many of you would be interested in seeing an Enthusiast Funded Grand Am Cup Subaru running the series, with Our Own Gary Sheehan Driving?
This thread is here to try and judge if an enthusiast group has the potential to raise enough money to support the first season of a Race Team.
So if you are interested, it is quite important that you let us know you are interested. Many people are viewing this thread, but not enough are posting. Please do.
If you are a Subaru Enthusiast and would like to see this, please just chime in and leave your email address.
I have included a poll at the top of the thread. If you could vote on this poll, it would help us to get an accurate idea of whether or not this may be possible.
Thank You
Jeff B

Get a $10 commitment from at least 75% of the NASIOC membership and it should work. I have every confidence that Gary is a good enough driver (although, by the time you get the money together, he'll be really old. ;) ).

Of course ... can't imagine a cooler thing for true Subiesta's to get involved in. It would be great if we could get SOA to match funds ... or provide material, etc.
| jslegacy | 12-28-2004 03:50 PM |
this would be for the 2006 season i suppose. I think it will take alot more money and effort than most members on this board are willing to contribute.

Then we need all of the help we can get.... Spread the word... refer this thread in as many forums as U can.... Remember this may very well be the chance to have the first truly enthusiast backed race team in history... (atleast to get the team going.....)

World Challenge Touring Car is the ticket, not Grand Am. Grand Am would be a waste of money for a variety of reasons, none the least of which is that the WRX is outclassed. In WCTC the WRX is now legal and though FI is new for WCTC, they will become the dominate cars within 2 years IMHO.
A "grassroots" supported team backed by the largest Subaru board is great marketing in and of itself. This will attract other sponsors. I think Gary has the rep here to pull in a significant about of funding. The "matching funds" idea from SOA is also, IMO, a good possibility.
Gary - You need to start getting the marketing wheels turning and figure this out.
I'd contribute $100 if this gets off the ground.

who would run the team, who will take care of all of the operations, all the logistics and what not? members or would we pay people for this?
also what you might want to do is come up with a business plan. Because even though its a race team you still need to treat is a business so that sponsors or investors have a reason to invest in it.

In my oppinion all Management decisions are up to Gary......
If we really wanna see the team do well we should let the pro's make the decisions....
Plus my original idea only involved funding the team to help jumpstart the season... Ppl I am only trying to get a feel for intrest in this idea. No plans have been brought up.... This needs to be taken one step ata time.
If All of you are interested in donating 10.00 atleast it may be reality. remember... I think there are like 60,000 members here on nasioc... That is a staggering number.
Why not use this Fanbase as a good way to see what we all may like to see.

It's a great idea. When (if?) Nick approves the effort and it becomes a sticky, start a NEW thread. Entitle it something like:
NASIOC Race Team, driven by Gary Sheehan
Do not put in Grand Am, or World Challenge. What's being sold in a WRX in a pro racing series, driven by Gary.
The specifics of which series can be discussed at length in the other thread.
So, to reinterate what Jeff is saying - this thread is for a show of pledges for financial contributions. :)

This thread is to place thoughts on creating a nasioc backed grand am cup team. Please post your thoughts and try to stay realistic and positive. If you wish to be negative have the facts to back it up. Anything extremely important or dealing with possible sponsors should be sent to via pm. Most likely send it to Gary Sheehan or myself. Thanks and hopefully we can get this going in the right direction.
I have at least one other driver and the 05 season starts (testing wise) in a week. So nasioc will be lucky to make the 06 season.

Just pm me. I don't care to leave name and contact information. I'm glad to see this is being taken pretty seriously by a number of you. But as i stated 06 season at the earliest. We would also require subaru's backing and i think that can be achieved. Because one of two things will happen. The wrx will do really well and subaru is going to want to take credit for it. OR the car is going to suck and subaru will look bad. I think with proper support from SOA the wrx will look very good.

Sounds good, but you need to state a monetary goal if you ever hope to accomplish something. Without a "finish line", you aren't going to get started. I'd be down to contribute, but not without a goal.

I would rather wait for Gary and Freinds to chime into this particular Thread.
It's to my understanding that if we got close to 500,000.00 for the 06 or 07 season, it might be reality. I know that number seems daunting, but if U realize that there are over 60,000 Nasioc members @ just 10.00 a piece we have raised 600,000.00 dollars. Assuming that 10.00 is the minimum. @ 20.00/person we have raised 1.2 million. The numbers can work.... but we need support. Also realize that Nasioc is probably one of the only online communities with enough pressence and enthusiastic support to actually pull this off.
And if U take all the money that the average Nasioc member has put into there Suby... 20.00 is pocket change.....
Cross fingers...

just because we may have that many people registered doesnt mean A) that they are willing to support and B) still even use the site.
In the past many people come to nasioc when there is a good thread and register to never return. Personally until there is an actual business plan that has Nick's. Gary's and SOA's input i doubt many people would be willing to contribute.

I agree with you on all points... but until we hear from Nick we can't go any further. I'm not asking for donations yet, I'm just trying to see if there is enough interest. Plus the Fund raising campaign (if it even starts) won't just stop at Nasioc.... Cummon boss... look outside the box. Nasioc is just the best springboard for this sorta thing.
Not to mention that if this does go a couple steps further, I will probably and most definately be outa the picture anyways. I'm just trying to get some key ppl together to possibly take this to reality.
It would be great to sit down on my couch on any given sunday and root for the Suby team that Nasioc helped to create.
Plus I don't go back to work till the 3rd and there are no autocrosses till Jan 24th.... and I'm done preparing my WRX for STX... so .... I GOT NUTHIN TO DO EXCEPT THIS... LOL :D
Lets see if we can make this happen...

oh i know we have to look outside the box. Its just that what you posted a few minutes was counting on every memeber donating XX amount. I think it would be great if that happened but I am just playing devils advocate here.
I think the potential for sponsorship if everything was organized properly could be almost endless because of the wide base of people on the forum that their product or company would be seen by thousands just on this board before the car is even built.

Steve, Think this is a great idea too.
One other thing I have seen in WC, was one of the Porche teams would get PCA members from the area around each event to help crew for the team. Doing just able anything you can think. Cleaning, swaping wheels, cooking food and what not.
I'll pitch in money.
BTW Steve, wouldn't the RS be better sooted for TC or have the rules made the WRX a better option?

Hey everyone,
I think this is a fantastic idea and I am truly flattered by your interest.
Right now I think we should be about gauging interest to see if NASIOC is a viable funding tool to get things started. I think it's premature to discuss series, team structure, team management, etc. This is about getting a Subaru in televised U.S. pro sedan road racing.
This has been done before at all levels of racing. It just takes getting the word out and getting commitments. I would say that if this can be done relatively quickly, the latter half of 2005 is a possibility.
In addition, a jump start like this will make the program a reality, which will make it easier to bring other sponsors on board.
Rest assured, there would be a top professional car prep and racing shop behind this operation.
Let's see where this goes! Let's see how many members REALLY want to see a Subaru in pro roadracing!!!

As much as I enjoy seeing mass-produced sport compacts whipping around my favorite track, none of them had a cluster of stars for an emblem. Let's make it happen! Hopefully the nasioc emblem will be bigger than the I-club on the JGTC car. It was maybe the size of my thumb...Anyhow, image aside, my xx amount of money would not only be an investment in a race team, but a better reason to go watch the race live than at home!

buzz313th, maybe add a poll to this thread to at least have a running tally of how many members are willing to support with a reasonable donation.
Could the donation be tax deductable? If so that may sway more paople to give big.
Something like would speak mountains about the subaru community. This is exactly the type of support that NASIOC members would be willing to give. On top of that SOA would be making a huge mistake if they didnt jump in with all of us.
Lets do this thing!
I'm definitely interested and would offer monetary support.
[emailprotected]
buzz313th, maybe add a poll to this thread to at least have a running tally of how many members are willing to support with a reasonable donation.
Thats a great Idea... I will go ahead and include a poll if I can.
And as a matter of fact I'm sure this might be good as a tax deduction. As long as Gary Doesn't show a proffit... :D
There are huge opportunities, with this type of funding, to help bolster marketing and exposure... for all parties concerned.
I agree with you about SOA HAVING to jump on this. No doubt, if this got underway, Gary would soon get a phone call from SOA.
Keep it up ppl lets get this thing going...

Yes it would be....
U know what would be Cooler..... if everyone donated $20.00 that would be alot more.... :D
U have the option to donate whatever you want. But like I said earlier on. We are not raising money NOW... we are merely trying to get a feel if this is possible...
Not only that... but when Gary wins and your sitting next to your better half and watching the race..... U can turn to them and say.... "I helped put that race team together"

Cool... please show your support by voting on the poll at the top of this thread.
As I said before, we are just trying to judge how successful we may be if we do try and take this to the next step... Basically we are just doing "Marketing Research" now. I'm sure when we get to the process of accepting money, there will be a plan to show appreciation to supporters...
Thanks for your support this early on..

I'm not going to say my name here or give my email adress because of professional reasons. I've worked with Gary at Lexus and I know a lot of what it takes to run a team. While Gary has posted and I'm sure he and I will continue to follow this thread I'm going to ask Jeff B to create a Microsoft excell or better yet access database with email adresses and names. as well as possible donation amount. I am not good with with access but I remember being able to create letters/emails and sub in names and such.
Along the lines of crew and so on, that would have to be determined later as gary has mentioned. There are a lot of important things that haven't even been looked at but I'll give it to Jeff and a lot of the people here. I'm impressed with how passionate you guys are. Keep working hard and who knows, you may have something here.
As far as tax deducatable donations go, Fat chance i'm afraid. My advice is try to keep money to a minimum. participate in the polls email the person who steps up as an administrator for this potetnial account and finally show your enthusiasm to whomever might be reading this thread.

I agree i was waiting for someone to respond to that point. A tax deduction only counts when a donantion is made to a non-profit organization, like Red Cross, Boy Scouts, your local high school band, etc.
By having a race team and any sort of sponsorship that rules out any chance of the organization becoming non-profit therefore not making donations tax deductable.
I am no accountant nor do i play one but that what I am speculating on this. If some one is a tax attorney I would love to hear what they have to asy regarding the matter.
