Chicklet! Chicklet! - RALLY MEXICO starts March 9! part 3

Weasel 555 03-10-2007 09:54 AM

from swrt:
Petter Solberg
Good and bad news really. Everything was perfect until about 12km before the finish line of SS5 when the oil light started to blink. I pushed on, but at the end of the stage we had no oil pressure and, it turned out, no oil. And that was it.

It looks like there was a tiny bit of damage to the oil cooler, but that was enough to drain the system. Overall, it's important to note that we had the winning pace, even on the repeated stages, and things like tyre wear and general feeling were very, very good. We were leading the rally here, and I'm sure it won't be long before we're doing that again.
greg donovan 03-10-2007 11:36 AM
party foul on the idiots throwing rocks at the cars. Last thing rally needs is retarded spectators. Rally Mexico is a provisional rally for 2008 or 9 i believe. **** like this will definately make it almost impossible to get the rally

other rally spectators in different countries dont seem to have the need to throw rocks

this is a big black spot on rally new mexico. Its the closest us will get to a rally and to see it disapear would suck
happened to gronholm a few years back. i think it was cyprus, or maybe turkey. either way it was a very rocky and rough rally that it happened at.

This sounds so calm and collect.

But inside, I'm sure he's gritting his teeth and feeling like this:

I hope Petter can hold it together for the next rallys.

I'm not saying he SHOULD go apenuts, but... I UNDERSTAND. (thanks, Chris Rock)
WRXedUSA 03-10-2007 12:27 PM

Travis/Christian are doing really well!

These spectators are shutting cattle gates, building stone walls and throwing rocks on stage.

I guess that's why Mexico isnt on the calendar next year. Freakin' morons.
happened to gronholm a few years back. i think it was cyprus, or maybe turkey. either way it was a very rocky and rough rally that it happened at.
last year at Rally Mex, some scoundrels put rocks and branches (logs) in the road at several stages. it's nothing new.

in Europe, nationalistic fans have sabotaged rally leaders from the "wrong" country numerous times. Gerard Larousse was taken out of the lead of 1968 Monte Carlo when hooligans shoveled snow onto the Col de Turini stage, which demolished the nose and front suspension of his groovy little Alpine A110.

at Rallye Defi in Quebec a couple years ago, we hit a very large rock suspiciously sited just after a blind crest, as did several other cars. we were lucky, the front skidplate gave up its ghost to save the car. other cars lost wheels, etc. it was a basketball-size chunk, just sitting in the middle of an otherwise straight and non-eroded stretch of smooth gravel.

some ppl just get their kicks in cruel ways.

Well maybe a rock, that hit the oil cooler fan blade which knocked a hole int he oil cooler that caused oil leek and the resulting retirement. Just bad luck.

Wasn't it Loeb in Mexico 2 years ago or last yea The only rally he didn't finish because of the oil leak.
I know it was Loeb and Mexico for sure.

It was in 2004. He damaged his sump guard early on and lost oil pressure. 2005 was the year that he drove back to service on 3 wheels. They've changed the rules since then making sure that you have to have all 4 wheels.

Nah... spectators in Monte Carlo throw snow instead.

Argentina, they throw rocks. I remember hearing Phil Mills say there's one spot on one stage that they wince when they go through because every year people throw rock at them.

Not to distract from the main point, which is the people who keep screwing around on the stages suck and need to knock it off. Just pointing out that Mexico isn't the only place where the spectators screw around -- though it sounds like it is it by far the worst about it.

Mystery boulder wasn't put there by a spectator. It was pulled onto the road by the car ahead of Petter. There were no spectators on that stage.
Mopho 03-11-2007 05:37 PM

there was once a big log placed in the road during an Irish rally a few years ago. It caused the leader to have a big off, totaled the car and sent the crew to hospital. Rumor was that it was a mafia hit as the driver had some shady business dealings

Good drive by Atkinson. he could have been 2nd perhaps if his turbo hadnt been giving him problems, perhaps. Podium anyways would have been great, but still a good result for sure.

Looks like the 07 car is a challenger. Just need to see if these reliablilty problems are a concern race to race or just bad luck here.

watched the "slow report" on shpeed tv today.. not a single shot or word about Pastrana... the stupid caption at the bottom just mentioned Pastrana 15th.. after showing the placement of the A8 cars... silly...
i hope they mention SRT USA efforts on the Wind Tunnel at least.

Heard from a couple of people that saw the raw incar footage say there was no rock visible.

That would be a really big rock to pull up from the earth...

Just saying, other events have their issues with speccies, but I can't remember an event with this many issues...

In any case, my last post was from a seperate thread that contained a spoiler in the thread title. Which is why I was so unhappy. The mods merged the threads.

Couple pics for you guys...

Travis was indeed a rockstar. An example of how good he is at what he does... When we were at the start of SS17 on Sunday morning, there was a crowd of spectators at the beginning of the control zone (where the crews check in for their start). All the cars were rolling up and waiting in the middle of the road and the fans couldn't really reach them. As Travis drives up, he edges his car right up to the fence line (literally touching the fence) and winds his window down so that the fans can reach him with their signs and posters, and he takes a moment to autograph all their things. Just by doing that little gesture he probably gained another 50 lifelong fans. A true pro.

RB5 Clone 03-13-2007 10:48 AM

Rally Mex rock throwers were equal-opportunity hooligans...they even tossed one at Sordo that took out his windshield, and he's like the Travis Pastrana of the Spanish-speaking rally world.

In a country where bullfighting and cockfighting are still popular, I guess tossing a few rocks at rally cars isn't seen as out of the norm.
chimchimm5 03-13-2007 11:10 AM

Whatever the country it is, throwing rocks with intent to damage is just ghetto. A rock is gonna kill someone one day when it gets tossed at a 100mph+ car.

There needs to be a culture of respect by the fans.
runnah 03-13-2007 12:37 PM

Well the ****ty thing is that it will only hurt the other spectators. They will probably force the crowds to move further back from the roads so no rocks can be thrown.
dwmoss_68 03-13-2007 12:58 PM

how about the gate that was closed on day 2, had to be a spectator playing games right??

I saw that too. I think it was an anti-static strap to keep the car from building up an electric charge.
WagonMonster 03-13-2007 01:08 PM

At one stage, these Mexican kids were sitting next to us and throwing rocks at each other.

One almost hit my camera, so I yelled: "Listen, you little ****, this camera is probably worth more than your house, so, I suggest you stop."

like a lightning grounding strap you might see in the UK??

dm
WhistlerRally 03-13-2007 03:14 PM

The "strap" or whatever it was, wasn't there earlier in the day or in the previous days. I'm sure it was just something that had worked loose and was hanging down. Almost looked like a part of the wiring harness, but I doubt it. It was not a simple "strap"...it had some kinks and bends in it.

What a rally... Thanks to WagonMonster and WhistlerRally for all the great pics! Awesome to have a WRC Rally on the continent.

I truly hope that a person/persona like Travis Pastrana is what the US needs to FINALLY get into rally. He's got all the potential to do this, as is evidenced by his treatment of spectators and fans. Ambassador Attitude FTW.
