If VSC copied the designs of the prodrive built open class cars from a few years ago then these cars were quite a bit more than the typical bolt on open class cars.
The cars are very very nice, but they're a lot closer to a Gr. N car than CPD1 is. CPD1 has custom front and rear subframes, custom suspension pick-up points, etc. etc. etc.
The new Vermont SportsCar cars basically use all stock suspension mounting points, bolt-on suspension parts, Gr.N dampers, etc. I think the best way to think of them is as follows - take a full spec N12 Gr.N car, cut off unnecessary metal bits which would be required by the homologation to shave weight, strip the Gr.N-required interior and use a carbon dash, door cards, and bulkhead, add a GEMS dash, add better diffs, stronger trailing links and lateral links, and an optimized 34mm motor. That's it, really.
All in all, they probably cost about 50-60% of what CPD1 costs, though as with all other things rally, this is a pretty rough guess. Don't get me wrong; they're awesome cars, but they're not even close to World Rally Cars;
If you're interested, there is a good article in C16 Autosyle magazine that has all the technical details of the new cars.

And IMO that is precisely how the cars should be in the WRC, it would cut costs and make the competition much more exciting
i agree.
colin was needed as a benchmark.
just about everyone knows who he is. i belong to a comic book forum and they all know who he is thanks to his video games.
and his new one, Dirt, sounds awesome.
I also think Colin's name was thrown in for mass appeal
Along with Miller and Foust

Are you saying Foust didn't deserve it?
He was 3rd, in a lesser car (much more N4 than Ken/Colin/Travis). He'd have given Ken a serious run for third if they had checked their tires more carefully and before they checked into the control :furious:
Lord help the open class runners if Rockstar stays on in 2007 and he gets used to the car....
These rally cars use manual trannies right?
So basically this madman had the uncanny ability and presense of mind to put it in neutral as he was starting to roll over, then put it in 1st and hammer the gas once he landed??
Collin said that he knew how bad of a roll over it was going to be because of his entry speed into the jump. When the car was completely upside down he selected first gear and kept his foot on the clutch. Once the car had righted it self he dumped the clutch. My mouth hit the floor when I herd him say that.

Yeah, Tanner is the real deal. He's fast in almost anything. And he's certainly pedaled that PGT car to within an inch of its life. Let's hope he gets great support from Rockstar next year and can continue to run an Open Class car. Of course, I don't think he and Scott can beat _us_, but they're welcome to try.

Whatever he winds up in, he'll be pushing for the podium.. That seems to be his style. Who knows how things would have panned out for him without the flat..
Nice rundown on the spec of the cars too. Helps people understand that there are large differences between a US spec Open class and WRC car. CPD1 is the closest thing to a WRC spec car in the US, lots of tube in all the right places in addition to lots of other go fast goodies.
Even though the new fleet of Vt Cars aren't WRC spec, they are still very proper.. :) All of them held up quite well through the X Games thrashing..

I've got some video of them on both attempts at the jump on Friday. I'll try to get it online soon as well as the vid of ACP breaking the LF control arm on Friday. Plus Richard hitting the burm at the finish (not sure if they showed that on TV or not) as well as the landing that caused the fireball under Iorio's car.

I think that was about as ideal a finish as you could hope for in terms of marketing appeal and such.
Colin having the composure to get right back on the throttle as soon as the wheels touched the ground was incredible.
The front tire blowing was part of the problem, but it looked to me more like the rear end catching that really started the roll, not that it matters one bit.
I think Pastrana was so amped up, he was having the time of his life...and drove like it. How could you not have fun.
The final stage, I think Pastrana had the advantage of being on the course more than others due to his practice with supermoto. Granted, it wasn't the exact same course, but the paved section was basically the same wasn't it. When autocrossing its always a bit of an advatage if you can walk the course more than the next guy/gal. With that being said, Colin was better in every aspect of the course, with the exception of keeping all four tires on the ground  at the jump. It was certainly apparent on the paved section. I would love to see more paved sections in North American rally.
I think Pastrana did a hell of job and deserves all the attention he's recieved. I think if the entire rally was longer, I think Colin's experience would have won out in the end. As it stands, I think Pastrana understands that he is very fortunate to have earned the gold medal....but like any form of racing, one mistake can cause victory to slip through your fingers.
Now I will be anxious to see how this blossoms. Who will be in the next one? I'd love to see Buffum give it a shot too.
I'd also like to see the final stage held at a bigger venue next time, lets say a race track. That would enable them to use the infield for the dirt sections and the track for the paved sections, and it would allow the fans to see the whole thing. However, it didn't look the stadium was filled for the rally comp, so that might be wishful thinking.
