Apparently I am an idiot...to save money they're using radio le mans, its a good thing though cuz they're showing most of the race this way at least.

Then when it go too expensive even for the factory teams, there was no one left to race.

GTS on the other hand is going to get hot in the next two years. Porsche will race the new CGT supercar in GTS starting in 06, 05 if we are lucky. Lambo may be in there, too.
As for the Lotus, (the Elise is my favorite track car ever!), there is no class it would be competitive in right now without some serious rules allowances and a bigger engine. The GT class Porsche GT3RSR's run at 2100lbs and have about 400 to 450 hp naturally aspirated (flat 6 3.8 ltr). That's a pretty tough setup to beat. The Elise can be raced at sub-1800lb weight, but it'd need around 340 to 360 hp to be competitive in the class. They could use another motor or turbo but it would require major rules politics. The old Elise GT1 from a few years ago was V8, and a piece of crap.
There are 2 Elises running in the Nurburgring 24, check the link to see. Grand Am Cup SGS or GS would be a great place for the Elise to run without major rules changes.
Thanks for the info on the GT3RSR's :)
I'd love to see Lambo in the 24.....
I'm deffentily rooting for the Elises in the Nurburgring 24.

Best one in a while

That was a good race...best one in a few years. Lots of great battles, adversity and drama, especially in GTS and GT.
Big win for Vette, great that McRae got a podium out of it. (By the last few hours of the race he was turning lap times very near Enge's qualifying times...he progressed a lot during the race.)
Also really happy that American Patrick Long won in GT on his first time out. Crazy how few people know how good this kid is (along with Mike Rockenfeller, also a Porsche factory driver). During the middle of the night the two of them were swapping really fast lap times as they chased each other down.
My bud who works for the TRG team emailed me to say that he is getting me a McRae LeMans autograph on a broken piece of splitter from the Ferrari.....woohoo. TRG's pit was right next to Prodrive.
I can't help mentioning this: Last night when the Lemans coverage went off and the NASCAR coverage came on, I could not get over how brutally silly the whole NASCAR package looked in contrast to the "real racing" feel of the Lemans coverage. Anyone else have that same sensation? Surreal.

For anyone interested, these cars all took wins in the lower classes (not a complete list):
Evo, Skyline, Volvo S60t, S2000, Alfa 147 hatch, Civic R, Opel Astra
There is a results pdf on the event site with all details and lap times.
Now, on to F1. Jeez what a huge racing weekend.

F1 almost seems boring in comparison to this LeMans race! ITs MS in the lead once again, no one near him as usual. And not much passing from what little I could see as I get ready for our AutoX in a few. But boy was there a lot of action in this years LM! Only thing is, it was basically Audi vs Audi vs Audi vs Audi - just which Country's car would win. I really miss the older races where there would be Porsche, Jaguar, Peugeot, Renault. Courage, Ferrari, Ford, Bentley, BMW, etc all trying to win. And I really miss the encloses prototypes a lot too!
Remember Silk Cut, NewMan, Creepy Crawly, Martini, RUF, and many of the other great names from the old days :(

I agree about F1 seeming boring!
I was all excited about flying to the USGP next week, and after watching ALL the 24hr coverage yesterday then watching the CGP, I was confused. I was sitting there thinking "Wow, guess I should take off the dates at Road America again... and wow the USGP looks to be boring as hell... in ALMS cars atleast pass eachother OUT of the pits :)"
Really F1 is cool, its a different kind of race... but it lacks the interesting racing that ALMS/LeMans has.
I mean in LeMans Audi owns LMP1 yet still can make it interesting. Even in previous years when the Audi R8 team cars were running and the Panoz Elan was the closest car to it, it was still a close under dog battle for the Panoz (also distinct technical differences between them which made the cars and teams even cooler). Audi Vs Audi was fun to watch in LeMans this year still.
But in the end its going to be a good racing summer for me now ;) (USGP, Road America ALMS, Mid Ohio ALMS, Road America Gran Prix Champ Car... ahh the goodness... no oval IRL crap or Nascar!)
USGP, Road America ALMS, Mid Ohio ALMS, Road America Gran Prix
LUCKY!!!! But, watching is one thing . . . . . but driving it is another. I got to race at Road America a couple of times as well as at the old Riverside. RA is my old home away from home too, back when I lived in the Midwest. Worked there for many years, as well as watched. June Sprints were great, but IMSA was my all time favorite! I was there when the first Mazda GTU RX7's first came out. I was walking behind one when they started the engine. The sound wave actually knocked me back a bit!!!!! Later that became my favorite music :)
| Clegg | 06-14-2004 08:23 AM |
The Historic GTP cars that ran there for the 1st ALMS race at RA were WAY nice. The 3 rotor Mazda's were ... awesome to say the least, and hella loud! :)
and yes driving is better than watching, but watching with a fresh beer in your hands from the time you wake up in a tent the day of the race till the race is over... cant be under estimated :)

It was after his first stint, going like 3 hours in the front half of the race....he was going fast for all but the spin on the final lap before pits, when he cooked the clutch getting it back on circuit.
They interviewed him like 15~20 minutes later IIRC.

Oh come on Clegg, NASCAR has GM/Ford/Dodge. And they get schooled in Everything else.
J/K.............The PrattMiller GM C5R program has a huge following. Come to Road Atlanta for the Petit Le Mans and you'll start feeling sorry for the Privateer Ferraris'. The fan base is 98% pro corvette there.....its kinda hard to watch sometimes for me.

I'm with BriDrive here, as much as I respect the Corvette team and the their great drivers, I'm just drawn to the Ferraris. It could be the underdog factor, or maybe the Ferrari mystic, or maybe the Italian in me, but probably more than anything it's just the sweetest sounding race car I've ever had the pleasure of hearing : ) To hear the scream of those V12s is something you have to experience !!
| Clegg | 06-14-2004 10:12 PM |
hehe the Panoz Elan V8's have a far better sound than ANY car out on the track :) If only they still ran the 5L like the had in the LMP01 prototype. the GT-LM will be packing the 4.5L I guess. I am very excited about the GT competition in ALMS for this season with the Esperante (sp?). V8 Elan vs Flat6 Porsche :)
| 360GT | 06-15-2004 04:17 PM |
To each his own Clegg. The Panoz motors conjure up world war II bomber aircraft sounds to me. But some folks like that.
Its kinda like going to Daytona for bike week. Some guys can't get enough of what used to be called the battle of the twins race sound. I personally liked the high revving screams of the 4 cylinder counterparts.
Panoz=Ford Not a bad thing in and of itself, just different.
High revving Judd's are the best sound going in LM cars by a Mulsanne mile.

Well Cosworth = Ford and not much bad can be said about those screaming high reving plants.
And yes I do so enjoy a car that shakes the earth when it drives by at speed. Not just something that is a high pitch screech that hurts the ears :)
Really Audi R8's are one of the nicest cars to watch cause they are SO damn quiet for a race car, possibly the quetest of all LMP cars (the MG Lola's are also quite muted)... and I do respect a race car that doesnt need to stound like its about to explode but still can haul ass :)
I also hate rice pipes on cars for all these reasons above.
