Crack-proof front lip for impreza (DIY) part 5

BugeyedWagon 06-22-2007 09:23 AM
not bad... maybe i'll pla around with this idea... where are you getting you seals? how long do you need it about?

oh in up in canada too so keep that in mind when you let me know what store to go to.

thanks
Home Hardware should also carry this. There are plenty of Home Hardwares in Norhtern Ontario where I frequent in the Summer. Of course I'm not a Canadian resident, so I cannot be sure they are located nationaly up there, but I most certainly think they are.

I have an '07 and was seriously considering this mod. So, can it actually be done with just superglue and heavy-duty double sided tape? Just curious.

Not good with power tools, and not too keen on drilling holes in my bumper cuz I suck. Thanks guys!
Kahres05 06-22-2007 03:27 PM

I don't think double sided tape and glue will hold it...especially if you hit a branch...it will come off. Besides, it looks good enough to do it right, and if it ever tares just replace it...whats a couple screw holes anyway?...
BugeyedWagon 06-22-2007 04:02 PM

I just purchased my supplies to do this job yesterday for a project this weekend. I got the garage door sealer from Home Depot, same as most other members (2 1/4"), and I'm using a different approach for hardware... I purchased black plastic automotive push screws aka "Christmas Trees," and 4lb test exterior mounting duoble sided tape; all from ACO Hardware. I think I'll drill the wholes first using suggestions I've read: Placement every 3-4 inches on straights and 1" on contours, then mount the lip on with the double sided tape, use an ice pic to puncture the lip at the whole locations, then simply push in my Christmas Trees. I figure if i ever don't like the lip or if it flys off I'll just put the push screws in all the wholes in the fascia and walla no more wholes. WISH ME LUCK!

thanks for the tips guys. here is a quick cell phone pic of it on my cousins 07 2.5i

lookin good
Kahres05 06-25-2007 09:37 AM

Just want to make a comment on how tough this crap is. I totally bottomed out the front at a gas station entrance and the thing didnt rip, scuffed a little and protected the bottom of the bumper....I'm impressed.
Nicklz 06-25-2007 10:19 AM

Does this actually work as a functional splitter. Meaning does it improve front stability/additonal downforce on front wheels at high speeds?

I've been tempted to do it, even if it doesn't add functionality it still looks good.
Kahres05 06-25-2007 10:26 AM

This mod if for cosmetic reasons...not rigid enough for down-force qualities...I reinforced mine with some rigid plastic and It bends a little but does not curl under the bumper at all...
Handsdown 06-25-2007 04:03 PM

i really don't think the rigidity matters as much as some people say. if you have an airtunnel and test it, then you can talk about it like it's fact. reality of the situation is that it won't make a difference until higher speeds and when it does, it probably helps but not as much as a rigid lip. and obviously, the bigger the lip the more air it's going to block from going under the car.

what would help more would be diffusers to let air escape faster once it's under the car.

in for a shot at this
NycFox 07-22-2007 03:18 PM

Just went to Home Depot.

Does anyone know the EXACT name of it?
or
Does anyone have a picture of the packaging?

I couldnt find it.

NaturallyAspirated 07-22-2007 05:20 PM

"Frost King"
NycFox 07-22-2007 09:15 PM

Am I even close?

That doesn't look like it. Did you find anything similar with an "L" shape?

It should also come in a clear plastic bag.

Yeah but they were all foam.

Mechie3 07-23-2007 09:50 AM

^^ Exactly. It's foam so it doesn't crack.
^^ Exactly. It's foam so it doesn't crack.
Really??
It looked like it was rubber on the cars??
Mechie3 07-23-2007 12:01 PM

it's a rubbery kinda foam. It's not soft like the foam in a couch cushion, but not a solid rubber. It's definitely a closed cell spongy rubber/foam.

Generally, when doing mods you should make sure you read the whole thread

Flyingjibus 07-23-2007 05:02 PM

Actually there is a foam version and a rubber version. I was not able to find this product at Home depot here in oregon, nor lowes for that matter. found it at Fred Meyer and local indy hardware store. The Foam is easier to do but the rubber looks better when done right.
Handsdown 07-23-2007 06:15 PM

yeah the rubber version sucks. it scratches easier and doesn't flex as well.

get the foam one.

i think it's got a special trademarked name like neoprene or something.

Just did my 07 with frostking black g9 garage door seal and 3m double sided tape all bought at loews home improvment for $15

Handsdown 07-31-2007 02:55 PM

looks well done, but you should have gotten G16 so that you would have extra lying around in case it rips off.
timesnap 07-31-2007 02:56 PM

Yeah i thought about that, and about having extra to put under the sideskirts. not sure how it would look, but im loving it as a front lip
Handsdown 07-31-2007 03:24 PM

i just say that because mine ripped off and got wrapped around my axel on the freeway.

i was glad to have some extra. besides it's like 16 feet for 13 bucks instead of 9 for 11.
Jonny07subie 08-10-2007 07:09 PM

just did mine today....overall looks pretty decent...i used the same garage stuff and instead of screwing the lip on my bumper I used super heavy duty 3m double sided tape....dint wanna feel like screwing it in.....(tip: try putting the lip farther behind the bumper so the tape isnt as visible....mine is somewhat visible but overall still looks good...good $18 DIY
Jonny07subie 08-10-2007 07:10 PM

also buy the package that contains the longer length cuz it'll be cheaper and also u can redo it if u mess up....or do it again next summer after the crappy winters here
ODiz413 08-11-2007 01:24 AM

anybody in the chicagoland area wanna do this wtih me? ii've been doin a lot of diy's lately but this looks more difficult, and i just finished redoing the a.b.c pillars and headliner!
NaturallyAspirated 08-11-2007 01:28 AM

This is one of the simplest DIY out there. It's a lot easier than the headliner mod you did.

Which method do you prefer? Double-sided tape? Or nuts and bolts? Double-sided tape is self-explanatory. Nuts and bolts require drilling, but that's really easy.
BlackPearlX 08-14-2007 09:55 PM

Ummm... Interesting.

I always likes the look of the lip, but after i saw the price, i decided i dont like it that much... now for $20, the love for the lip is back again.

I am lazy, so i rather do 3M approach. Any horror stories out there for people who used just the tape? :)
Handsdown 08-14-2007 09:59 PM

you have to use the thick(1" wide) super strength stuff...

that will stick for years. i used the thin (~1cm) regular strength stuff and the next time i hit the highway i found myself on a shoulder, yanking it out from my front axle.

so yeah, get 3m part no. 03616
BlackPearlX 08-15-2007 12:08 AM

Thanks Handsdown!

Another question... my car is lowered just a bit and when I get my car up on ramps to change oil it scrapes just a tiny bit... now if i get the lip on, i guess it will quickly destroy itself or the foam is elastic enough?

or should i start looking for some ramps for lowered cars, no more pepboys :(
NaturallyAspirated 08-15-2007 12:18 AM

That's the beauty of this lip. I've scraped on high driveways a bunch of times, and it did barely any damage.

If it does get damaged, just go to the Home Depot and pick up another pack. It's less than $10.

If you had another lip such as a V-Limited, you'd be down a lot of money .
lima 08-15-2007 12:08 PM

great mod
These all look great. I will plan on doing this once I get my impreza.
ACrAPPYRS 08-15-2007 04:22 PM

I did this today on my '05...looks damn good!
powercurve 08-16-2007 02:55 PM

I went to Lowes today, and I found it ... but I thought this stuff was supposed to be hard as hell ... it's all flexible. Is it supposed to be like that? How does it not bend in the wind?

edit: I think I know why ... I'm not finding the "hard nail on rubber" ... im finding just the "nail on"
What I've found:

and what everyone is using:

kunfuzion 08-16-2007 05:29 PM

the hard rubber is not easy to use, at least for me. it doesn't retain its shape well.
powercurve 08-16-2007 05:35 PM

So do I just go with the soft? It's so light and soft, 3m tape alone would have no trouble holding it at all, but I'm afraid it's gonna be deforming in the wind a bit too much. Has anyone used the soft stuff?
impreza_GC8 08-16-2007 05:38 PM
So do I just go with the soft? It's so light and soft, 3m tape alone would have no trouble holding it at all, but I'm afraid it's gonna be deforming in the wind a bit too much. Has anyone used the soft stuff?
I used Frost King just like in the pic a few posts above. I dont think just 3M tape will hold it on. I used lots of screws and some household silicone sealant. You could try just using 3M, but the material needs to be formed to the bumper, because it wants to stay in a straight line, not be bent all over the place to match the shape of the bumper. Thats just my opinion though.
t3hWIT 08-18-2007 07:24 PM

I think we're all using the soft stuff. I've been using it since last spring and I've had no issues with it whatsoever.
Mooneyes13 09-03-2007 12:26 PM

best method for getting the bends on the 06 cars???? thanks
Mooneyes13 09-03-2007 09:47 PM

Can not find this **** anywhere.....
Mooneyes13 09-07-2007 09:22 AM

bump I cant find this stuff for the diy lip, anyone want to send me a bag?
Krud 09-21-2007 07:04 PM

i just picked up Nail-on Rubber.
AxlxA 11-10-2007 03:02 PM

Bump for such a hot DIY. And I might be doing this over thanksgiving break before it gets too cold/snow.

Get the garage door sealer and get some hard core 3m Doublesided tape? anything else?

Update: Well no response so far so I went to Home Depot and tried to look for frost king.... they don't carry their brand any more and it's now... MD something Garage Door Bottom Sealer. But it's only available in 2" form and I figure that's a bit short.

So I went to Ace Hardware and found this at a higher cost.... $13
Someone had mentioned carpet tape and my bumper is actually a bit scratched so I needed the cloth to adhere to the rough scratched part of the bumper.

Am I doing this the right way? Did I buy the wrong stuff?
AxlxA 11-11-2007 12:44 PM

Bump because I edited with a new pic.
Scooby steve33 11-12-2007 11:41 PM

i have to put my 2 cents in, i have had one on my car for about 6 months with just 3m double sided tape, ive hit 150mph+ gone throught dirt, mud, and powerwashed it and never had a problem.
AxlxA 11-12-2007 11:47 PM

Did you use Side 2 onto the bumper like previous poster had asked?

I think side 2 is the flimsier portion and side 1 is harder.
Scooby steve33 11-13-2007 09:38 AM

i really have no idea i just taped onto the lip first and then smacked it to the bumped and it had never came off.
AxlxA 11-13-2007 02:10 PM

I think i'm gonna give it a shot. The downside is, if i mess up... it might be hard for me to find the sealer here again since I bought the last pack at ACE hardware and they had a narrower one at home depot.
AxlxA 11-17-2007 05:51 PM

Wait I looked at my car, the corners i can't reach the inside of the car. Did you guys have to take off the bumper to install this?
ryan2b 11-17-2007 05:56 PM

I know everyone is useing this Frost King But
I live in central Cali. and the only door trim stuff I found is really flexable. Its like semi-hard foam. It it supposed to be harder? I know this has bee talk about but I just want to make sure.

See it looks like foam. Like it would rip off

This is the frost King,it looks harder.
Is this what your useing??
iheartmysuby 11-17-2007 07:10 PM

its soft foam
AxlxA 11-17-2007 09:48 PM

yea it's really soft.... I just spent maybe 2 hrs in very dim garage installing mine. It looks good in the dark but I don't know how it looks in when it's day time though. We'll see.
