Custom Reverse Hood Scoop Idea

So I think I'm gonna try and make a custom hood scoop. All the reverse ones I've seen are terrible. They scream rice. I'm looking for something smoother. Something like:

Here's what I'm thinking
1.) Take off current hood scoop and put down a layer of plastic wrap around the scoop hole to keep paint from scratching
2.) Cover plastic wrap with aluminum warp.
3.) Put down a 3 layers of fiberglass over the outlign of the hole.
4.) Take mold out of hole and add cross vents
5.) Smooth everything out 10 times
6.) Prime, paint, Clear coat.
I know I'm way over simplifying things, but here is where i need someone who knows what they're doing with fiberglass to help me out.
Any advice before I start this will be appreciated.

I don't know squat about making fiberglas stuff, but want to remind you that the rear of the hood is a high pressure area. Reverse scoop, forward scoop, slats......air will be going into the engine compartment no matter what you do. You probably already know that but for those who don't.
There was a great pic years ago of an RS with the covers removed from the grills and scoop after an ice storm. It clearly showed that air went out the front side vents and into the scoop.

just buy an rs hood and trunk.

^ outta cash
I wanted to make somthing like the evo hood vent, but I know that won't work since the hook is sloped and i can't just throw mesh over the hole.
So I wanted to make those cross vents lean back so the air hitting the vent would be projected upward and over creating a negative pressue on the bottom of the cross vents, which pulls air out from the engine bay.

I wish someone would make one like the one thats on Team Ice:

Icelandic but more pics are here:

There was guy on here that did a billet alum. border and used some mesh screen for the inside. Looked similar the Evo's and not too bad. I'm trying to delete mine for less drag on the car when its at the track.

Get an 04-05 rs carbon fiber hood and paint it, then you have the smooth look without any added weight.

Reasons I won't get a CF hood
-expensive ($500+)
-requires hood pins
-may be heavier depending on brand
-I would want to paint it (more $$$)
-some people have had problems with them popping up at high speeds
-I want some cooling

Are the vents just going to be flat across? Take some pics of your DIY project if you decide to do it. How about make it out of carbon fiber?

That's a cool idea (ach...sorry bad pun).
I like the top mount intercooler, but I'm not crazy about huge hood scoops. Granted the RS scoop on the GC8 stuff isn't as tall as the humongous mail slot the STi is but I'd prefer a flat hood.
My only concern, and I don't know if it's justified or not, is the open hole above the intercooler that's not protected from the rain / sun / etc.

you dont think rain and snow and birds and more stuff gets sucked in through the stock hoodscoop?? probably more with the hoodscoop than what youll see with a flat peice of mesh....

This scoop would be intended for use with a Front mount intercooler. I guess you could use it with a top mount, but you wouldn't be getting enough air to the top mount.

I actually have the CNC file from Matt (the pic above of the vent to replace the stock scoop). I haven't had a chance to have this made for myself yet. But don't bother PM'ing me for the file as it is property of Matt, and I am respecting his request to not share or profit from his work. However, I would be willing to believe he might be willing to make and sell these if there were enough interest though.

I worked with fiberglass
the directions you have arent bad
I use tin foil around the scoop area wrap it up good this will keep the rsin from sticking on your hood
it helps to place somethime stiff in back of the hole so your fiberglass will keep a flat shape, you need to secure a bord or something behind the hole then wrap that in tin foil also
Do this on a warm day resin drys faster in warm weather
Next cut out a few layers of fiberglass mats the shape of the hole make it bigger so you can trim it to shape
The mix your first batch of resin pour some into a pan not tomuch just enough to soak the 3 or 4 layers of mats you just cut out.
Its dries fast so you have to work fast
waer gloves, mix the hardener in with a stick mix it well like for 45 secs
take one layer and saok it in the resin, then place it on the hole, try to work out all air bubbles
do the same for the rest of the layers. let it dry, onces it hard pull it off of the hood. then trim it with a dremel, cut the slits with a dremel, then sand the top of it down with 60 grit, clean it and bondo it to smooth it out. next you can build some tabs into the bottom with more resin and fiberglas to fasten it to your hood.

I'm assuming that when you say "not the carbon fiber that is like a fabric" you are talking about resin impregnated (pre-preg) carbon fiber.
Generally pre-preg is still laid out onto a mold, but instead of applying resin as is the case would to the fabric type, the pre-preg is placed into an autoclave where the temperature and pressure force it into the shape of the mold.
There would be no reason to use a CNC with carbon fiber. The mold would be close to the shape of the finished part. The only cutting at all would be in the case of excess material, and that could easily be done by hand.

the only way you will get air to your intake is if you have some sort of scoop... just having a piece cut out will bring air out of your engine... but i do like the way they look
