The final version is painted and on my car. I am very happy with the fit and flushness now that I added extra pull-down studs to the front corners. The paint didn't match perfectly using just the color code, but it is close enough for this one. Mesh and a few frames are at the powder coater.

Technically this is called the "KS Tech" Hood Vent scoop delete, since KS Technology LLC is the name of my company.
Powder coated said 7-10 days for the mesh so that puts it in early next week. I will be emailing this week a handful of folks who have been with me on this and waiting for a long-ass time, and they will get first chance. The first 15 will have either a bare frame or a few will be powder coated semi-flat black. Looking into prepainting some in silver, white, and blue for the second batch. Second batch will take 3 weeks or so (plus painting time). Also working on an '02/'03 version - still in the trial-and-error drawing and paper-doll stage right now.
Very busy today, but will try to return pm's asap...
Thanks.
Oh, and I'm working on installation instructions with pics too. It's a snap to install, but there's a trick or two that makes it go smoother. I'll host it someplace for all to see.

No, the 02/03 is much much different than the 06+. The 06+ hole is actually a little bigger than the 04/05, and the 02/03 is a good bit smaller. And then the earlier ones are even a little smaller still. I know these things because I have like 10 scoops sitting around my office. ;)

Good to know thanks. I was under the impression that Subaru reverted to the 02/03 scoop but I guess they just went back to that style, since the Smurf Hat look wasn't going that well.
Well I guess the next logical thing to do would be to design an 02/03 version, hint, hint. ;) Us FMIC Forester owners could use these, and we use the 02/03 scoops.

It is nice when a plan come together - like this has.
Well done!,
Lots of people have good ideas, but not many actually take them through to a result.

I was thinking the same thing. I'm sure that at least the first order is already spoken for. I just want to be alerted when the 02/03 model is available.
| KSTech | 03-16-2007 04:09 PM |
I doubt the thread will be moved, since I didn't start it.
I have a first drawing of the 02/03 almost done. Lots of trial sizing runs to go before anything worth a photo. Gonna try something different to speed up the process this time.
My old username is still active, and the interest list is still intact.

Congratulations Matt, you've done an awesome job, and I get to bet the first customer in Australia (possibly anywhere) to fit this baby.
First impressions: great fitment, awesome finish (I went with a brushed aluminium to suit FMIC) and I suppose there are a bunch of other benefits (reduced frontal area, reduced attention from the plod).
The car isn't detailed, but thought I'd add my Jenny Craig pics (sorry 56kers):

I've just gotta say, I was a little worried about getting rid of my scoop, but I'm loving this scoop-delete. I took it out for a spirited drive yesterday, and I had to turn my adjustable BOV down! It looks amazing when you have some bling piping in there, and seems to visually 'lower' the car, best of all when you're sitting at a set of lights you get a bit of heat shimmer

(black powder-coated mesh w/ aspen white trim)
i didn't even realize that hood actually extends beyond the old hoodscoop !!! wow, this has oppened up a whole new world for me....
in all seriousness.... looks great, the hood doesn't vibrate anymore at high speeds, and a wothwhile aerodynamic improvement, as well.... you WILL get some interesting looks from other turbo cars/ subaru's.... ;)

is this strictly for 04-05 cars that have front mounted intercoolers?
i imagine that a heavy rainfall might not be good for some. are you going to incorporate some kind of louvre?
very interested.

DO NOT install this on a top mount car, it just won't flow sufficiently through the core...
I'm not too worried about the vent letting water in, if its good enough for the EVo and GC8s its good enough for me :)

It definitely is only recommended for FMIC cars only.
Keep in mind that the scoop hole sits mostly overtop of the transmission, not the engine, so rainfall is not that big of a deal to many. Also.. even with a scoop as soon as the car is moving it is pushing plenty of rain in there anyway.
Currently the 04/05 is the only version out there. I have drawings for 02/03 & 06/07, but they are not yet ready to be transferred to metal.
I also have played with some louver ideas, both underneath the mesh and in place of the mesh. The 02/03 and 06/07 versions are priority though.
Right now I am trying to get some stuff finished up on other projects, so I can introduce myself formally to the NASIOC community in the next week or so. Click on my username and go to my webpage to get an idea of the stuff I have going on. Been very very busy lately. :)
