Who runs the rallysprints out in NY? Any chance someone could PM me an e-mail address of someone to talk to about the program?
Many thanks,
Chris
Thanks for the link Kevin. :)
Chris,
The gentleman who organizes and runs the Rally NY Rallysprints is Ivan Orisek. The very same Ivan that helped us with the RPI Rallycross. With his wife Olga, he also runs the Rally NY Rallycrosses, the Rally New York and International Rally New York stage rallies. The Orisek's are an invaluable asset to the northeastern Rally community.
I encourage anyone who would like to get into rallying, even from a spectator level, to help us out at the big International Rally New York event this September 29th through October 1st. An event of this magnitude needs lots of volunteer marshals. In addition to tarmac and gravel stages, we're talking Super Special stages and fireworks at the Might M Gaming facility at Monticello Raceway too! Gus is heading up a posse of RPI Rally members to help out again this year. I will be there all weekend as well. I would encourage anyone who'd like to help the sport in our area and get to see the action up close, to click HERE for details. Rally workers usually get a complimentary event T-shirt, meals, and motel rooms for multi day workers.
Many thanks,
Chris

The link i posted still works, i just checked it out now... Take note, my school's webserver is (sometimes retarded) ...i mean, case sensitive. Again, that address is:
skidmore dot edu /~a_epstei/RallyCross
Of course, replace the "dot" with an actual period. Other things to try: add three w's at the beginning, and a / at the end. *shrug* (i'm sure these were at least semi-obvious, but rather than have you guys miss some good pictures i figured i'd risk being an ass) ;)
To add to my incessant wheel/rim questions, would it be a bad choice to buy real gravel tires and use them as snow tires? My concerns are: road noise, tarmac handling, wear, and them just not being good in snow. Otherwise a set of gravel tires would be cheaper than the blizzak WS-50's i was eyeing...

I'll like to take this opportunity to update you guys. The engraved plates are "coming." Apparently JCB Specialties (who made our T-shirts and Trophies) is really backed up so be patient.
I also have goodies for all of you. Expect something in the mail soon!
Regards,
Gus

See you this Thursday night at Mr. Willy's? ;)
How many of the RPI Rally club people did you round up?

Wrong compound they would handle really bad. That and most rally tires have a tread wear rating of about 20 so you would be lucky to get 1,000 miles out of them.
Best bet is probably a second set of rims. Cheap steelies, one set for gravel and the other for snow would be fine.
HTH,
Chris

Gravel (rally) tires WILL NOT work in the snow. Search on SS and you'll find out.

Buy another set of WRX rims real cheap and throw some winter tires on them. I'm considering the Green Diamond tires http://greendiamondtire.com/
| TimStevens | 09-29-2005 01:41 PM |
You might want to do a search in the NE forum about those Green Diamonds. Someone had a set and had, IIRC, a big bubble form in the sidewall and had some issues getting a replacement. That was a few years back, though.
| Ice racer | 09-29-2005 02:12 PM |
I guess the important thing is to make sure and get a set of dedicated winter tires, regardless of brand. Any of them are better than all season or summer tires, plus you need them in order to enter A.M.E.C.'s Studs on Ice event each February. :D
| AngryBlueRS | 09-29-2005 03:52 PM |
The green diamonds are an awesome tire. they are as close as you are going to get to studs without actually running them. They have amazing grip on the ice.
If I can make a recommendation if cost is an option:
* Pick up a set of steel rims
* Pick up a set of winter tires with an aggressive knobby pattern (Blizzak ws-50's or Pirelli SnowSport 210's come to mind) & mount them on the steelies
* Run the tires in the winter and stay safe
* Come spring, use them as your RallyX tire
No the traction will not be as good in the dirt as dedicated rally tires, but it will be pretty good, keep you safe in the winter, and save you a few $$$.
Just a thought,
Chris

not to mention that the winter tires will keep you in stock class vs. rally tires.

I got my Rally RPI "care package" in the mail today. As promised, Gus sent a CD with digital pics of the event, a plaque for the trophy winners, and a nice little giveaway courtesy of Peer Impact.
Once again, THANKS Gus, and RallyRPI!
