On seperate news, I'm swapping the turbo to one with a bigger wheel...don't think it's gonna be good for the rallycross but it sure will kick some dirt.

Is anyone else spreading the word to generate interest and exposure for this rallycross? I hope so. :)

If you're in western NY or northern PA and want to check out a rallycross a little closer to home before making the trip upstate, check out the Finger Lakes Region SCCA rallycross held in Geneseo, NY (about half an hour south of Rochester, an hour east of Buffalo, an hour north of Corning, 90 minutes west of Syracuse, etc). The next one is Saturday, August 27. For more info, click here: http://www.flr-scca.com/rally/2005/rallycross/index.html.
(note to mods and everyone else, the date of the FLR rally-x does not conflict with the Saratoga rally-x)

I think it was the shock of going from "wow, the race will be 2 mins away!" to "wow, the race will be 2 hours away!" Something else did come up, too, but I'll be damned if I can remember what.
And as you'll recall the event the year previous wasn't exactly down the road :p

You'd be better off with a diesel VW. :D
If I also added that you could watch the owner's 9-year-old son can run the track in his dad's Eagle Talon (w/ 5MT) just a few seconds slower than the rest of the pack, would that make the trip worthwhile? ;)

I did some informal AutoX instructing for a 15 yo girl at a few autocrosses a few summers back. She had just received her permit and her dad was taking her out in his Miata to get more comfortable behind the wheel and get a better feel for the car.
So, I doubt the 16 thing is too heavily enforced, but who knows?

I just checked the driver roster and was delighted to see a fourth A.M.E.C. member is now signed up to run with his '00 ZX2 with the rare S/R performance package. I'm still rattling cages and drawing more of us ice racers out for this. :)
Got a guy on the VW forum wanting to come out but he needs to have his new floorboards welded in first. That floorboard thing reminded me of a pretty funny rallycross story from summer of 2000. Five of us A.M.E.C. guys went to the Irish hills Rallycross that used to run on the property where the Irish Cultural Center currently resides in East Durham, NY. The night before the event we talked one of our guys into dragging out his Saab 9000t ice race car and running it. The car was in his shop and he was in the process of lightening it up. He had the steel trunk floor cut out [to later be replaced by aluminum sheet]. Well he ran at this great event without a trunk floor and it was a dry, hot, and dusty event. During his runs that huge gaping hole in the trunk floor would scoop up all of the dust and dirt like a vacuum cleaner. His interior filled up so badly you couldn't see anyone driving the car from the sidelines. He came back after each run completely covered in dust. It was then and there that I coined his new nickname that sticks to this day: Donut Man. :D I'm telling you he crawled out of that Saab and looked like a powdered donut. Just got back from North Carolina and settling down in Troy NY now. I will give the meeting notice out tomorrow so you'll have a couple days notice prior to the meeting =)
We haven't gotten any more people registering for the event, and as far as the cut off deadline, I have not set a date yet. I think this weekend we will address that issue. Also, I will try to head up to RallyNY RallySpring two weekend from now and help promote the RallyCross there.

I had another possible entrant PM me today and ask if he could sign up the morning of the event. So there will be more. I will not be seeing you at the RNY Rallysprints as I will be running at the [just announced today] NER Loon Mountain NH event that same day and promoting the Rally RPI event while I'm there. So we'll be promoting from both ends. :)

"Cut off deadline" as in at some point you won't allow new people to register for the event? If you allow walk-ins you'll get 5 to 10 more who show up the day of the event. And I know that if I can make it up I won't be registering until the Monday or Tuesday before the event...

They change the course around slightly every time to avoid making any major ruts (they even change it slightly mid-race-day while everyone's taking a lunch break).
As for a good 2WD time, there was a guy in a rally prepped FWD 80s VW Golf that was posting 1.17s near the end (so around 1 minute 10 seconds). Most AWD people were posting times in the 1.20s and 1.30s (around 75-80 seconds per lap), but the Golf driver used to do a little pro rally IIRC.

Well, since it's our inaugural event and Washington County is doing us a favor by providing an "affordable" land lease price (without the consideration of how beat up the lot will be after the event), we have to guarentee that this event will at least break even. I know that a rallycross usually squeezes in a few more people at last minute signups during the day of the event like you said, but it's hard to count that number and we gotta have a cut off date and number somewhere. We will try to make our decision this weekend while keeping that in mind.
With that said, this weekend's coordination meeting is going to be on this Saturday at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's Student Union 3PM.
It is Building 35 on the map I'll be sending out to individuals via PM (since we can't post URL's). There's a Horseshoe at the (I believe) North side of the building and I'll be waiting there.
If you do not get a PM and will like to join and coordinate the event, please PM me. Thanks!
Keep up the good work!

Gus

Guys,
A little update on the coordination meeting. Thank you everyone for showing such interest in helping RallyRPI out on our inaugural event. We need everyone who has any knowledge to attend if possible.
A slight change to the location. We're going to have the meeting up at the Washington County Fairground since we're going to do the layout anyways. On agenda would be the following:
Layout (course, start, finish, tech, parking, spectating, others)
Safety Features (orange vests, flags, signs, emergency tape)
Class Definition (AWD, FWD, Pro, Novice)
Budget Concerns (breaking even?)
- Trophies
- Result Display
- Land Lease
- Insurance
- Porta Potty
- Repair Fee
Mike, Jan, and Chris, I will be calling you to reconfirm the location.
Same time, 3PM, Tomorrow (saturday)
p.s. I will try to have some cones ready for gauging the course.

So the course was inspected and measured today.
It is .4 miles perimeter (we were working with a car odometer), this comes roughly to be 17 acres to play with (very big). This should enable us to put in a quite a lengthy course. I can't wait.
There is all grass right now, and we'll see how it is after the fair happening next week.

Today's coordination meeting went really well. I want to thank everyone that showed up! The rallyX location is HUGE and we were able to get some snap shots of the field for your reference. If we want to, I think we can make a 1-2 mi course out of this field, but careful manuvers around hills and bumps will need further considerations and planning. I should receive the pictures soon and I'll post it on our homepage. RallyRPI homepage is hosted by geocities under "rallyrpi/Rally_Cross"
A map of the course is being developed as we're speaking, and I'll send out action items by next week so we know we have all the items necessary for the event.
After calculation, we're still looking for around a dozen of people to sign up! Keep 'em coming!
Regards,
Gus

Sounds good! The rear is about stock height and the front is maybe an inch or so lowered but I'd have a skid plate on just in case. I'm sure there would be no problem unless it got very rutted. I'll figure out if I can do this by the end of the week.

I have to say, I think this is one of the best RallyX surfaces I've seen in the area. Its certainly the lowest chance of bosy damage. :D

Sounds good! The rear is about stock height and the front is maybe an inch or so lowered but I'd have a skid plate on just in case. I'm sure there would be no problem unless it got very rutted. I'll figure out if I can do this by the end of the week.
The site looks great!

Nice pics Chris. :)
It was good seeing/meeting you guys too.
The Washington County Fair is this week and I plan to take the family there one evening. Gus, if you email me a copy of your event flyer, I will print off a bunch and put them under the wiper arms of every likely candidate I see in the vast parking lot at the fair this week. It would be nice to build a local clientel for these events. I'd like to see rallycrossing flourish in upstate northeastern NY.

Sounds cool, but we may want to check with the fair ground folks first. Don't want to tick someone off and bite the hand that is feeding us. ;)
Great meeting everyone!

More internet exposure for this event...

I went on a binge last night and posted an event flyer for this rallycross on several more car specific message board forums. We are now on the map for Audi, Honda, Hyundai, SE-R Spec-V, Mitsubishi, Ford Focus, and even Volvo, [I know fat chance on that one right? :D ].
Interestingly enough, I did some searches on each site for [rallycross] and frankly didn't see much activity. It's amazing how little a following rallying has for some makes.

There's this guy named Duncan who drags out this old Volvo 122 for the NER RallyX's. Not the fastest car on course, but its a blast to watch!

That sounds like a good event...too bad RPI and the RSCA wasn't doing rallycrosses when I went..just autocrosses and road rallies.

Gus and crew,
Beanboy asked a question in another thread (NE Region) that got me thinking. What's the ruling on passengers?
NER RallyX = anyone who's signed a waiver
SCCNH AutoX = registered contestants only
Most other AutoX = board accepted instructors only
Just curious what you guys are going to go with. Personally, I like the NER RallyX method because it let's a driver take along someone they are comfortable with. It also insures that novices have enough people to ride shotgun with them.
We've also found it helps grow the size of the club. We've had a few people start off as spectators, go out for a ride, and get totally hooked and come back as contestants.
Just curious...

Mike,
I sent out two fliers and the second one I have modified with more pertinent information so I think we should just use the second one. The fairground should have no problem with people advertising about the rallycross because they want this event to succeed as much as we do since they're hosting it on their property. If anything comes up I will deal with the site manager personally.
Also, thanks for continuing to post and spread the word on other forums. I really appreciate it.
Regarding the issue with passengers, I'll look into it and get a response to you asap.
Regards,
Dominic Gus Lin

hahaha, well some forum boards are just not backed up with passion like all the Subaru forums.
On another note, I just got a reply back from NASA and the passengers must be atleast 18 years of age or older. I believe if that qualified person signs an event waiver, that person should be able to ride in any competitor's car pending on driver's permission.
We just got another one in, check the update

Great that makes two more today. I bumped into a friend in WalMart last night. He says he's in. I'll have him register with you Gus.
Edit: Make that four. My friend's got two other drivers he will share the vehicle with :)
We're at 25 now. 30 drivers shouldn't be an issue, Gus. Wait until all of the "last minute" types pile in.
