Dakar 2007 **Results Spoiler Warning** part 3

StuBeck 01-12-2007 03:16 PM

Its a Hummer, I don't think it has what it takes to do well for the entire series.
Its a Hummer, I don't think it has what it takes to do well for the entire series.
See the discussion on Page 2. It's not a Hummer. It's a mid/rear engine Baja truck with a carbon fiber body made to look like a Hummer. It relatively heavy and very powerful compared to most of the other Dakar entries. Fast when on harder surfaces like rocks or gravel, not so good when it gets stuck in soft sand.

I wonder if sales of Hummers will go up if he does well? Will people actually be fooled into thinking they are buying a vehicle that can compete in the Dakar? (realizing of course that people who buy Hummers aren't that smart to begin with)
Its a Hummer, I don't think it has what it takes to do well for the entire series.
Gordon's Dakar "Hummer" has about as much in common with the thing on dealer's lots as Schumi's old Ferrari had in common with a VW Jetta.

Another note on the sand. Some places in Baja have super fine talc-like sand that might be similar to conditions in Africa. The movie "Dust to Glory" has some good coverage of the Baja stuff. About the only hope anyone has in making it through the stuff is to keep the speed up.

buuut.. the hummer.. haha.. omg, that things incredibly fast!
did you guys see it literally pushing one of the slower guys out the way!!..
what's a bit of argy bargy between racing drivers.. haha.. real class!
Rallyroo 01-15-2007 02:41 AM

Yeah, I caught up with the coverage as of today.
littlefluffybunnies 01-15-2007 07:44 AM

OMG, Im completely devastated... giniels stuck in the stage.. waiting for assistance! :( :(

Nr 301, DE VILLIERS/VON ZITZEWITZ - VOLKSWAGEN, SUPER PRODUCTION After a malfunction of the turbo set the engine of his car on fire at km 129, the leader in the overall rankings Giniel de Villiers is now stranded at the foot of the Elephants Rock and waiting for his assistance team.
littlefluffybunnies 01-15-2007 08:32 AM

OMG OMG... maybe, just maybe.. if giniel is able to get started..
he can catch up.. ?!?!?!

Sainz stopped at km 325

Nr 303, SAINZ/PERIN - VOLKSWAGEN, SUPER PRODUCTION Clocked in the lead of the special stage at km 322, Spaniard Carlos Sainz is now stopped at km 325 due to mechanical problems. His US teammate Mark Miller has also stopped to help him out.

what do you guys think?!?!
3barboost 01-15-2007 08:41 AM

i am buying some blunt razor blades - this cant be !!!
Giniel had it in the bag !!!!!
aaaarrrrrggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
littlefluffybunnies 01-15-2007 08:46 AM

i'm just about in tears.. you're not helping
you're supposed to tell me everythings going to be ok damnit!
3barboost 01-15-2007 08:51 AM

I think the touregs have some sort of issue - cant see them both having different problems
get Giniel an ox wagon
Howl 01-15-2007 09:00 AM

My guess is by the end of the day Peterhansel or Alphand will be the overall leader. If Sainz can get moving again he might still be thrid overall, but Miller has moved on leaving Sainz behind. It looks like De Villiers hasn't moved in a while, but there are no dispatches, so who knows.
piits 01-15-2007 09:07 AM

our motorider, Janis Vinter, has won his first Dakar stage, ahead of Mark Coma
littlefluffybunnies 01-15-2007 09:07 AM

it's driving me insane.. yeah, as you said, millers back in the race..

Electronics problems for Sainz

Nr 303, SAINZ/PERIN - VOLKSWAGEN, SUPER PRODUCTION Stopped at km 325 due to problems with his cars electronics, Spaniard Carlos Sainz is unable to restart at present. His US teammate Mark Miller, who also stopped to give him a helping hand, is back in the race and it is now Portuguese Carlos Sousa who is by the side of former leader in the overall rankings.

littlefluffybunnies 01-15-2007 09:09 AM

so what does this mean for him!!?!?!??!?

De Villiers in tow...

Nr 301, DE VILLIERS/VON ZITZEWITZ - VOLKSWAGEN, SUPER PRODUCTION Victim of an engine fire at km 129 of todays special stage, South African Giniel De Villiers is now trying to get back to the Nema bivouac and is being towed by his fast assistance truck Nr 546.
Weasel 555 01-15-2007 09:17 AM

^thass a bummer for de villiers
littlefluffybunnies 01-15-2007 09:21 AM

anybody know what happens now?
3barboost 01-15-2007 09:23 AM

we assume the brace position ?

seriously I dont know enough about the dakar rules to say
I wish I did know more right about now
hows my plumber doing ?
piits 01-15-2007 09:27 AM

from Dakar.com

Nr 23, JANIS VINTERS - KTM, MARATHON As the first 7 bikes have now reached the end of this ninth special stage, Latvian Janis Vinters seems pending validation to be getting his first scratch time victory on the Dakar, 731 ahead of Frenchman Cyril Despres and 753 ahead of Spaniard Marc Coma.

this could move him up to top 10, currently he is 7th, but that could change :)
littlefluffybunnies 01-15-2007 09:30 AM

*sigh..

well classen's past cp1, but if he's currently in 14th, i'd say it's not looking very good, as the riders are already finishing the stage :S

that's really brilliant for you guys!
what do you mean by your rider, if i may ask?
littlefluffybunnies 01-15-2007 09:38 AM

sooo, i spoke to a friend from nissan motorsport, who said that giniel can finish the stage anyway he can.. ie,
towed in by another competitor, truck, support etc etc. of course, his chances now of winning are literally over :(

also, nissan motorsport themselves have been getting different reports. (satellite phones apparently suck)
the one said that it was just the turbo that caught alight, and that the engine should be repairable as he managed to get the fire out..

the other said the engine had completely burn't out!!!!!!

ralph (south african) is navigating for miller, and has been keeping them up to date with the status
(ralph navigates for a local driver, duncan vos).. so hopefully, when he's finished the stage, he'll send an update

from Latvia :)

his brother is also participating, as his support driver, and he currently is somewhere in the top 30.

they both are a part of our national team, with another two entries in the cars class - those yellow, Chevy Corvette powered truck called OSC :)
StuBeck 01-15-2007 09:51 AM

Hopefully its just the turbo, that is easy to replace...but an engine, not so much.
littlefluffybunnies 01-15-2007 09:53 AM

i see sainz hasn't moved either..
giniel has progressed though,.. albeit being towed :(

damnit,.. i still can't believe this!
Stphane Peterhansel's taken the lead
Howl 01-15-2007 12:53 PM

Yup. Looks like it's over (at least as far as a win) for both De Villiers and Sainz. Tracking shows De Villiers is about to pass Sainz. I wonder if his truck can tow two cars?

Wha...! Sainz appears to be moving.
littlefluffybunnies 01-15-2007 01:38 PM

yeah, i noticed that .. but earlier, sainz moved backwards.. :S lol.
the magazine show is going to be aired in an hours time.. hopefully, there will be some sort of clarity as to whats going on.

Is Sainz still moving? They've seemed to have issues.

From Raid Live: http://www.raid-live.com/dakar/en/accueil/news1.shtml
. . . Indeed this year, De Villiers' adventure will only have lasted 5,255 km. At km 130 of today's special stage, the turbo of the Race Touareg Volkswagen nr 301, leader in the overall rankings, caught fire. Right in front of Elephants' Rock. A beautiful place for a rough defeat.Respectful of the scenery, the South-African did not play drama queen. He shook the hand of his copilot Dirk Von Zitzewitz, and it was all it took for all to understand that his hopes for victory had vanished for good. Forced to wait for this assistance team and be towed to Nema, he kissed victory goodbye with great dignity.

After the problems of Sainz yesterday, this is probably a good thing for the Mitsubishi of Peterhansel and Alphand. But one big change never comes alone. The confrontation between the reds and the blues is back on the agenda due to the joint consequences of an unfortunate time loss before CP1 for Peter stopped because of a clutch problem for about 10 minutes and a sudden fit of pride of the Spanish driver who drove through CP1 with the best time. But it did not last long for the former rally world champion who was also let down by technology on this day after a halt without assistance. Nr 303 got stuck 50km from CP2 because his electronics system had broken down. Neither Miller, nor Sousa, who both spent some time with Sainz, were able to find the miracle solution.
Sainz and De Villiers are definitely both moving now.

Dakar is never in the bag (and all the competitors know this) until they're flying down the beach on the final stage. Heck even then isht can happen.:)
littlefluffybunnies 01-16-2007 02:22 AM

sigh,.. well, from what i could understand last night, oil spilled onto the turbo which caught alight.. totally devastating.. :(

thankfully though, there are no withdrawels as yet..
3barboost 01-16-2007 03:43 AM

I understood that the rocker arm (ie the thingy that operates the valve) broke - put a hole in the rocker cover - spilled oil out - oil caught fire - if thats happened - the motor is history - but it shows that even competition motors with millions behind in R and D can fail from little things

I call jinx :p Sorry bunnies :(
Too bad for Carlos too. Anybody see the pics of Ari' vdub after it's fire. That thing was toast. He had a really bad event this year.

I figured Mitsu would be the team to beat, just wish it wasn't due to others misfortune. I'm still gonna hold out hope for Miller or Sousa.
littlefluffybunnies 01-16-2007 05:10 AM

ag, it's ok.
it's racing... i'm just really down about it is all.
i could tell how upset everyone was at nissan,.. so can only imagine what's going on at the dakar. :(
littlefluffybunnies 01-16-2007 05:34 AM

did you guys see the report about sousa's vw in stage 10.
i reckon someone's going to have a lot of explaining to do at the vw camp.
the cars were running fine till the major service... where they literally stripped and rebuilt the cars.. now things are falling apart left right and centre..

or.. i'm just upset and bitter.. and looking to blame someone :S
littlefluffybunnies 01-16-2007 08:28 AM

giniels' just crawled in.. at 14th for the stage.. :(
.. and sainz at 5th
Howl 01-16-2007 10:11 AM

Well. It looks like the VW's are faster, but not as durable as the Mitsu's. Slow and steady wins the race. At least now we'll probably get another year of Mitsubishi "Dakar" TV commercials. Still five days to go though.
shige 01-16-2007 09:43 PM

The VW's have had a lot of problems since their 'refreshing' at the bivouac. Sainz had some P/S problems in stage 8 before his electrical issue. Looks liek he managed to roll into the bivouac while Eurosport was doing their live feed.) The Mitsubishi's are coming back! Although once VW works the bugs out of their cars, they will be back on top. Mitsubishi will need to get some more speed out if their Pajaros next year for sure. The Mitsubishi's have their own problems though. Luc and Peterhansel both had clutches go out so far. (They have a really trick two clutch backup system the UK feed did a segment on. 15 minute swap.) Matsuoka had some other problems earlier. Schlesser seems to be doing good as the top privateer.

KTM seems to have huge problems with the new 690's transmissions. Comas been lucky not to have any major problems. Two busted up wheels on stage 8 though. The rest of the team seems to get a new transmission and motors every stop. Coma lost his water carrier though, so it might be tough if he does break. Despres had to do the stage without a working roadbook and still finished 2nd. Simply amazing. Seems that the guy's on the older 660's are doing better over the long haul.

Oh btw: the #400 2CV withdrew on stage 4.
scoobyRx 01-17-2007 02:48 AM

clutches and transmissions do seem to be fragile this year. Seems like at least one Mitsu changes a clutch every day. And yet they're still up front
One segment from yesterday showed Miller and Sainz fly by one Mitsu, yet just some miles further they were both stopped and the Mitsu navvie was elated. That just kinda summed up the event.

I spotted that 2CV on the tv show twice in the first couple days. surprised it made the tv show.

I've always wondered, what are the responsibilitities of the water carrier? water, some spare parts, what else?
I've always wondered, what are the responsibilitities of the water carrier? water, some spare parts, what else?
I don't know the details, but I know the motorcycles are required to carry four litres of water in case they get stuck out there.
shige 01-17-2007 02:58 PM
I've always wondered, what are the responsibilitities of the water carrier? water, some spare parts, what else?
Water Carriers are to stay as close to their teammate as possible, without taking unnecessary risk, so as to be alongside them as quickly as possible should they need support. They may carrier more supplies so the main rider is able to run lighter. They have 'water carriers' in many other sports too. They are just insurance so that the team will finish with at least one rider/driver. Keep in mind that the Trucks are support vehicles. This is why they are last to leave.

But like I mentioned earlier Coma last his water carrier. There was another rider, who withdrew from the Gauloises KTM team. So now his water carrier, is unleashed and is able to go all out. KTM's 690 Rally, which all of the factory teams are using are brand new bikes this year. The LC4 engine seems to be doing fine though. They have been using that engine for a while, it's just bumped up in cc's this year. I wonder if KTM's 690 Rally Replica will sell well with the current showing at Dakar.

The segment on the Mitsubishi clutches was interesting. They have two seperate clutch boxes that are mounted inline with each other. The one up front is the working unit while the rear mounted box is a back up. (This is why Alphand was told not to throw away the old box.) The lines are disconnected and the boxes can be swapped out very quickly which has really helped them.

According to the Eurosport live feed, Giniel De Villers and Carlos Sainz are back in it.

ELMER SYMONS PASSES AWAY ON 2007 DAKAR RALLY

It is with deep regret that Motorsport South Africa learnt that experienced and talented South African off-road motorcycle rider Elmer Symons suffered a fatal accident on the 2007 edition of the Dakar Rally.

29 year old Symons crashed his Yamaha on Tuesday 9 January while tackling the fourth stage of the event in Morocco. Organisers received an intrackalert of his accident from km 142 of the stretch between Er Rachidia and Ouarzazate and following the arrival of the helicopter, Symons was pronounced dead 10 minutes after the crash.

This year was the first Dakar Rally that Symons had entered as a competitor, following multiple years as part of the service and back up crew to other riders. In 2005 he represented the Red Bull KTM USA Team as a factory mechanic and in 2006 was a privateer mechanic for James Embro. At the time of the accident, he was lying in a very respectable 18th overall.

Born in Ladysmith, KwaZulu-Natal in 1977, Symons enjoyed the general outdoors, mountain biking and hiking of course his primary passion was that that of riding motorbikes. He began riding competitively in 1996 and became the Junior Hare scramble and enduro champion. Other notable accolades under Symons belt included 1st overall in 250cc category on the Roof of Africa in both 1999 and 2002, bronze medallist in the Portugal based international six-day enduro in 1999, 2000 African Enduro Champion, winner of the 250 Pro Adelanto GP in 2003, silver medallist at the international six-day enduro in Poland in 2004, 1st in the Pro 250 Vegas to Reno in 2005 and 24HR Ironman champion Perry Mountain in 2006.

With all of the successes that Symons gained in the sport of enduro riding both locally and internationally, he will no doubt live forever in the hearts and minds of his fellow competitors.

MSA would like to extend their deepest condolences to Elmers family, Philip & Jualeen, Norman & Eileen, James, Jane and Talisa & Sinead. He will be sorely missed.

giniels 12th,.. with sainz 10th going into stage 12, which is now underway
8 hours behind the leader.. sigh..

anyways.. last nights coverage was actually enjoyable.
i for one wasn't chewing the edge of the couch in anticipation.. :D

lol, they showed coma bored to tears listening to his ipod... and jamming with the music while on the tar section of the stage, which was just about the entire stage length.

a few of the cars swerving on the road,... with even the helicopter doing some low level flying out of boredom.. hahaha.. good stuff!!
littlefluffybunnies 01-18-2007 09:52 AM

oh urgh.. 20 cars have just cleared the stage.. and guess where giniel is...
.. 20th.. i'm feeling nauseas.. i'm going to go lie down now. :(

oh wow.. just been pushed down to 22nd
scoobyRx 01-19-2007 07:25 AM

The leaders are not having good luck this year.
littlefluffybunnies 01-19-2007 10:57 AM

What's wrong with Gordon? I mean, he's rallying all of the privateer motos to share gas with him. He's #1 in the unlimited class, I believe. He's still a privateer so I'll be rooting for the underdogs. :D:devil:

I'm watching the highlights rigth now. So Coma's out? I just checked the withdraws and he's there. Wow! I thought he had it in the bag with almost an hour ahead of Despres. (though I was rooting for Despres) It does mean Chris is 3rd and could make 2nd.

Verhoeven sure had a hard time this year. On the last stage he was 12 hours and had to wait for teh Truck to catch up to him with a spare engine, now he's out with two dislocated shoulders.

Looks like Petterhanse and Alphand are 1 & 2 for sure with Schlesser a distant 3rd. Matsuoka should of had 5 if he wasn't told to slow down. Roma's down in 15th though.

Not really mentioned but the Japanese HINO's are doing rather well. They have two trucks that are 9th and 13th.

Rider dies as Dakar nears finish

French motorbike rider Eric Aubijoux became the second fatality in this year's Dakar Rally.

The 42-year-old died near the end of the 14th stage between Tambacounda and Dakar in Senegal on Saturday.

A race spokesman said Aubijoux died of heart failure after appearing to faint during the 576km penultimate leg.

"At 15km from the end, he came to a stop after feeling unwell. He then had a seizure and was not able to be revived," said a statement.

"He was a motorcross fanatic who was participating in his sixth Dakar rally in which he had finished in 16th place in 2001."

Aubijoux finished 26th on Saturday and was 18th in the overall standings.

South African motorcyclist Elmer Symons, 29, competing in his first Dakar Rally, died after an accident during the fourth stage on 9 January.

Last year, 41-year-old Australian motorcyclist Andy Caldecott died.

Two children were also killed in Guinea and Senegal after being hit by vehicles passing through their villages.

Two years ago, 2001 and 2002 champion Fabrizio Meoni of Italy and Juan Manuel Perez of Spain, both motorcyclists with KTM, were killed.

There always seems like there's a void to fill after it's over, when you've been keeping track for so many days. Get the same feeling when the Tour ends in July.

I wish Monte would have been next week, too as it was tough to keep up on both events this weekend.

also found this aerial pic of the Mitsu bivouac at Atar. Thought it was pretty amazing the support those three cars get--guess that's why they keep winning.

Nice picture. Mitsubishi had 4 cars in the rally. 300 of Alfond, 302 of Petterhansel, 306 of Matsuoka and 304 of Roma. My bet is 302 is under the umbrella. It looks like two of those trucks were competing in the Truck class.
