I LOVE the horn on that 2CV! It sounds nice also. Wonder what it weighs? It just might float over the deep sand sections.
| scoobyRx | 01-07-2007 03:05 AM |
ooh, good call. I didn't think of that but maybe it's too light to sink in the sand
There are blades of grass on that course that are stronger than a 2CV

Anyone else notice that 2CV has two engines? They have a mention in Wikipedia too.

Robby Gordon's Hummer isn't a hummer. Well, the CF body looks like one but that's probably all that is hummer. His truck is 2wd which is why he got stuck in the mud and had to get pulled out by a tractor.
You can find specs on his truck here: http://www.robbygordon.com/cms/publish/cat_index_106.shtml
For the torrent check out: http://torrentscan.com/. Type in Dakar 2007 and click Demonoid and it should come up. be kind and leave your conenction open for as long as you can so others can get the torrent.

our Chevy-powered protos are still in the race, though the main constructor/most skilled driver Dambis has some mechanical issues today and has fallen from 29th to 90th.

I was in the group that built Robby's Hummer last year, and yes, its way way heavy relative to the competition, and the only thing on that vehicle that is hummer is the grill and mirrors. The car is actually the old Cam car, used to be flouresent orange, some of you may remember Robby winning Laughlin with that car a few years ago.

Looks like Jonah is out.
Heres an email that was forwarded to me.
"Well, it looks like the Dakar is over for Jonah. He's sitting in the desert with a big whole in his motor. broken crank he says. he's very bummed. said it was just too fast for his bike. said he felt totally comfortable going that fast, just that his bike couldn't take it. Casey came by with the satellite phone and since he's not hurt he has to sit out there and wait for the sweeper trucks to come by. will be a long day for Jonah. he was only about 190km into the special. too far for Casey to pull him in. Maybe next year!!!! Thanks for all the prayers and good wishes. please keep them coming until Jonah is home safe. Also, keep Casey in your thoughts and prayers. GO CASEY!!!!!!"
After his performance last year I really think he was sitting in a perfect position for a win this year.

Too bad about Street, he seemed to do well on the show I just watched and Blais did well too.
I like the TV show so far. They are showing more than just the racing and keeping it interesting and not dumbing it down for the casual viewers.

sorry if this is a dumb question..I'm a bit of a Dakar n00b (been hooked on that Race to Dakar show on OLN...as well as the Long Way Round before it)..
Is there a reason why people dont use Subies in the race? I gather that a "stock" factory Subaru WRC rally car wouldnt cut it...it would need to be lifted etc...(maybe use a modded Forester?)...but they do have a pretty proven rally track record..no?
I realize that most of the "cars" in the Dakar are heavily modded (if not built from scratch)....but is there any particular reason a Subaru based car wouldnt compete well?

aw man, was reading some of the local news articles about the rider, Elmer Symons. it's just so sad.. the one article cited he'd saved up for three years to be able to compete.. sigh :(

I think you will probably find there are a few subaru based cars competing or have competed
I dont think you will se fhi as the manufacturer getting involved - kinda like Dakar has become a Mitsu event the cost / r and d to topple mitsu will be huge and for what commercial benefit - like Mitsu pulled out of WRC

it's probably just not that viable for subaru as a manufacturer to enter a works team. it's not really their market if you think about it. it's aimed more at true off-road cars.. such as the 4x4 'trucks', ie, the nissans and mitso etc.
and when i say off-road, i mean off roading, not wrc type off road.
i can't see a win at the dakar helping subaru sales, as the cars would probably need major work.. and resemble nothing of the road going car. Where as .. say nissan win, it probably would help their sales figures on their utilities, ie, pathfinders etc.
as in, people can relate to the x5.. as the resemblance isn't that far off.
hmm.. am i making any sense at all.. lol
it sounded so much better in my head

I'm pulling for the ex-WRC people Sainz and Vatanen. I'm a little suprized that Gordon beat everyone on that stage, except Schlesser, by almost 7 minutes. I doubt he can make up the 3+ hours he's behind, but if he can prove Baja trucks can win stages by that much then it's only a matter of time before the rally is overrun by American "Baja" entries.
At least it will make good TV.
The next two special stages are the two longest on the rally (both over 500km). It's make or break time.

Wow, Vladimir Chagrin rolls and is out.
The real test for Gordon will be the deep sand. What they're running on now looks to be similar to Baja. last year the Schlesser Fords had a hard time there since they don't have 4wd. Gordon is a lot heavier but still only 2wd. It should be interesting.

I agree, it should be interesting. Actually, Gordon has had his protrucks (what is essentially under the Hummer skin) on the dunes at Glamis and it did exceptionally well. Now keep in mind he was running paddle tires on that Red Bull Glamis rig but hopefully his tires for the African stages will be chosen/designed with a bit of sand in mind. If he has some luck in the sand he'll be really fast.

I haven't been to Glamis but I'd assume it's still pretty course sand and not the micropartical sand they have over in North Africa. I believe some manufacturers agreed to using only one tire type for the whole race. I'm not sure of the current rules for tires though. Last year Gordon used Toyo's. So far he's doing well.
Stage 6 summary
Pending validation, American driver Robby Gordon (Hummer), with a time of 33639", won the sixth special scratch time stage as well as the open category, 17" ahead of Frenchman Jean-Louis Schlesser (Buggy Schlesser), who won the stage in the two-wheel drive category. Third place, 652 behind, went to place Giniel De Villiers (VW). The South African is still 2nd in the general rankings, 311 behind the leader, his Spanish team-mate Carlos Sainz (VW). Finally, in the Production category, Frenchman Paul Belmondo (Nissan) was triumphant with the 31st-placed scratch time.

Looks like Petehansel was leading early, but then De Villiers took a massive lead. Final standing aren't posted yet but it looks to be in the five minutes ahead of Sainz based on the last PV point.
Also the last 134km have been cancelled due to a sand storm.

from today:
Meanwhile, Portugal's Carlos Sousa, who lost and later found his co-pilot in the middle of the desert in Mauritania during Friday's stage, said he now had no hope of making it to the podium.
Sousa finished ninth at the end of the seventh stage after starting in third place, having lost German team-mate Andreas Shulz when the co-pilot pushed their car off a sand dune.
"There was a sand storm, visibility was low, and after I took off from the dune I looked back and no longer saw him," said Sousa.
The driver said he circled the area for an hour before spotting Schulz again.
"We were both completely drained when we found each other. Now my dreams of reaching the podium are gone," he added
scarey.
