Dash lighting?
I'd really like to change all the lighting in my Legacy to blue instead of the green that came with the factory. The speedometer, tach, etc. guages, all the little indicators behind stuff like the A/C.... Is this possible? The only real concern I'd have is the LCD that gives outside temp and milage...
Any help is appreciated!

I have also wondered this...
Also some time back I remember a thread talking about changing out the map lights, or just putting bulb comdems over them but I cant find it. Does anyone have and information on this?

You can get bulb condoms for ~$3.00 at places like AUTOZONE. They just slip over the existing bulb.

in my tiburon i had changed all interior lighting to blue LEDs. it was really nice looking... you just need to go to radio shack, get a solder iron and solder, a bunch of LEDs and ~330 ohm resistors to convert 12v to 3-ish volts. have fun!

In my Impreza I have changed the HVAC controls to a deep blue by using 194 or 168 LED bulbs from autodynamic.com. The bulbs have a plastic base, which you need to grind or cut down to the size of the bulbs (there are 2) that are behind the knobs. The LEDs just push in like the stock bulbs, no problems so far. You can also get bulb condoms that go over the stock bulbs, but the color seems to be more of an aqua than a blue. I would like to know if anyone knows how to do the speedo and tach lights as well.

Khail19,
it seems to me that you could put in the indiglo guages, with 10 shades green to blue you should find a good match. I haven't done anything yet, but looking at bulb condoms, with indiglo. I bought an mp3 deck that put my stereo to blue led in prep for the whole job.
For now I just lower the interior brightness, and the mp3 deck has a blackout mode so it does not look mismatched.

i tried this with my old eclipse.
blue bulb condoms usually result in an aqua backlight because the blue mixes with the yellow light from the bulbs. this was my experience anyway, the only color i ever had luck with when it came to condoms was the red condoms, but i didn't like the shade of red, wasn't RED enough.
in the end i used some clear red paint from the craft store, it is used for windows and light bulbs. i didn't paint the bulbs becuase it burns off, i ended up painting the backside of the gauges, hvac controls etc. you can controle the deepness of the color by adding layers of color, worked nicely.
i think the only way to get the true blue color is leds which should be a nice project.

Wagon Guy,
Thanks for the reply, I am aware of the regular indiglo and do not like the way they look at all. There is also the reverse indiglo (where just the markings and numbers light up), and like the look of them at night, but do not like the white faces during the day. There has been a lot of discussion in other threads about making black faced reverse indiglo gauges, but no one has made them yet as far as I know. So my only other choice is to change the bulbs. I ordered some blue LEDs from www.ledtronics.com that should plug right in to the dash sockets, we'll find out when they get here. About $10 per bulb though, and it looks like 5 are needed. I'll post on whether they work or not when I get them.

Please do post a follow up on those LED's, and if they don't work, I heard that reverse indiglo has a super low life, the luminescent (sp) effect just fades.. I am just going on hearsay. But I agree the reverse look way better at night. Damn volkswagon guys got it made.
Anyone else have better input on the reverse indiglos???

I wanted the red "aircraft instrument panel" look. I just painted the gage and center console bulbs in my WRX with red Testors paint. Worked fine, won't burn off. You just have to be careful to not paint high beam, turn signal indicator, etc, bulbs.

Wagon Guy,
My bulbs should be here tomorrow or Friday, so I'll put them in and post for you guys on how they look.
Anglophile,
I also went with painting the bulbs red, which worked pretty well. When I tried painting them blue the color was very diffuse and uneven, and did not look good at all. I think red works better because it is closer to the natural color of the light and it lets more light shine through the bulb.
Keep posting guys so we don't lose this thread!!

Khail19 do you have a cam to post pics?? And what is your intention for the center console where the air controls are? Will your center be green still or are there LED's to convert these as well?
One more thing, how do I know if this will work for new age WRX?

Wagon Guy,
I have a cam but haven't used the software yet. I'll get one of my roommates to show me how. I got the bulbs today and I'm still playing with them, but I think the 5mm ones are too large. I should have got more 4.5mm bulbs. My car is a new style (MY02+) Impreza, just not a WRX. Our setups are identical though. I have already done the center console with LEDs, that is what prompted me to do the dash. They matched my Clarion head unit so good I was amazed. But then the dash was still green and had to go. The LEDs I used for the center were size 194 bulbs; I grinded the plastic bases down to fit in the sockets. I had these leftover after I got pulled over for having blue sidemarkers, so I got creative with them and for once I did something useful. These won't work in the dash without taking off the needles and the gauge face overlays, which I have heard too many horror stories about to try. So I'll let you know when I get these things going good. And anyone who is ordering these bulbs from www.LEDtronics.com, make sure you get 6 of the 4.5mm size wedge LEDs. I only got 5 and I have suck now. :D

Sorry still no pics yet. I got the bulbs in and on the brightest setting they are still very dim. They are very bright right in front of the bulb, but the light is focused in one spot and doesn't spread around very well. They are still visible in total darkness, but not bright enough for me. Maybe I'll try putting bulb condoms over the LEDs to spread the light around more. This might just make it dimmer though. Oh well I'll figure it out. Let me know if you guys have any ideas for this.

just wanted to let you guys know, I ordered "194/168 LED Blue with 4 Bulbs Type *EXTRA BRIGHTNESS* " bulbs from www.autodynamic.com and just put them in. THey took a bit of cutting to get them to fit the smaller socket size. In the process I got the factory bulb stuck in a socket and broke it.. so I had to take everything apart. If you're careful and cut enough of the plastic base though, you should have no problems. In any case, they look fantastic compared to the blue bulb condoms that I used to use... the difference in "blueness" is like night and day! Now I need to order more for my gauges on my a-pillar! =P
I'm going to have to remember this thread for when my reverse indiglo gauges die... I'll have to force those damn oem green numbers to blue!
EDIT: I should have mentioned WHERE I put these LEDs in  .... behind the air conditioning controls

CyC,
Glad it worked for you too! I had these bulbs in my white face Autometer Phantom gauges in my other car and they looked really good. The color is a very deep blue, almost bordering on purple, which is exactly what I wanted. Now if I could just get the dash lights the same way I could start screwing around with making the car faster and handle better instead of taking my dash apart every night!

Dan,
You should get the smaller size, 4.5mm bulbs. The 5mm don't fit without modification and the smaller ones are either brighter or have a wider angle of reflection. I only got one of the smaller ones and whichever spot I put it in is definitely brighter than the rest of the dash lights. The part # for the blue LEDs is WF-150-OPB-014V. You need 6 for the dash and 2 for the heater and A/C controls. I will have to reorder more of the smaller ones and hopefully they will let me refund the larger ones I don't need. Will post pics as soon as I can. My roommate has the digi cam and the software I need to load on my PC, hopefully she comes home soon!

Khail,
(8) 4.5mm's it is. I will order em monday, can't wait. So these bulbs are the deep blue, almost purple look. Would you say they rate favorably compared to the VW lightscheme? Is there a thread you used to see how to take the dash apart, or did you just do it?
CYC,
I hope I am speaking correctly for him, but LEDTRONICS>COM is the place he referenced for those part numbers.
One more thing Khail, any thoughts on the fog light, and cruise control indicator lights?

I wouldn't say it's as purple as the VW dash lights are, but a nice deep blue. There are threads on how to take off the instrument cluster and the cover on the heater controls. Do a search on "indiglo install" or something like that and you should find something. If not let me know and I'll take you through it. It's pretty easy. As far as the fog and cruise switches, I have not tried taking them apart yet. There is probably a small bulb inside the switch but I'm not sure. I wasn't planning on changing those anyway though.

The pic quality is not that great, in real life the light is very bright and even across the controls. In the pic it fades towards the edges. But it gives you guys an idea of the color at least. The dash pics don't show up anything except for the odometer display, everything else is too dim. If you use the 4.5mm bulbs it should be much brighter. I only ordered one of these (which is the one in the odometer), the rest were the 5mm which don't seem to be nearly as bright. I think the viewing angle is smaller or something. Let me know what you guys think.

Dan,
The dash lights are not as bright as the HVAC controls. I took pics of them but they don't even show up. I used the 5mm bulbs though, which aren't as bright as the 4.5mm ones. the part # for the blue 4.5mm bulbs is WF150-OPB-014V on the invoice that I got with my bulbs. From this page- www.netdisty.net/ds/WF150/
You need 6 for the dash and 2 for the HVAC controls. I'll have to order more of these to see if they show up better myself. Hopefully I can get a refund on the 5mm ones that I bought.

Wagon Guy,
Don't worry about it, I should have got the right ones the first time. And shipping isn't free, they just don't charge you on the website. On my order it was less than $5 though. I hope you don't have to wait for yours too. I wish I knew of another place to get these but no one else seems to make them. So I guess I'll just have to wait. ;)

Khail,
My order shipped yesterday (Monday) in the A.M. Hopefully I get lucky with 3 or 4 day ground at worst, and I could have a weekend project. 5 to 10 bucks shipping oughta be worth it in my opinion. Of course if they don't come I'll have fun installing my other goodies on the way:
Short throw w/ bushings
shift boot
shift knob
shifter trim
side skirts
wagon roof trim for removing rails
door sills
fender markers
spray tint
Hmmm better be a long weekend:devil:

Well I finally got the blue LED to work in the odometer spot, but it ended up looking far too bright for my taste, far brighter than the stock green bulb seen in these pics. It was also more of a teal in the center, then it spread to the blue like the others.
I decided that the green odometer helps accent the green needles, fog light switch, and other green bulbs found throughout our interior.
Now I adjusted the pics in my photo editor to show them a little better. The real depth of color is much like this, only its actually a bit more dim than the stock setup. If you take your stock dash light adjuster and adjust it to the one next to the brightest setting or maybe even one dimmer than that  I think that is about where these stand as far as brightness goes. Let's see if I can post these pics?

A Final thought
Well I apologize, but somewhere in getting these resized and posted they kinda came out like doo doo. But if you see the ones on page 1 of the HVAC, you'll see about how mine look. The dash is righ there in brightness as well. One point I'd like to make, is my pics do not show the green needles as well as they could/should. If you go with these bulbs, you WILL have a blue cluster with green needles, its very nice IMO. Also thats why I left in the green odometer bulb. But you CAN put the blue bulb in. So I wound up using 7 of the 8 bulbs I ordered, but you do need 8 to complete the blue conversion.
One LAST note, I did not shave any, (none) bulbs, or stems. I just popped them in and they worked. The HVAC ones are not as tight as the dash, but i wiggled them around and determined that they aren't going anywheres.
And if you do this, and put your car together and walk away and find your parking lights on, don't panic, you just hit the EURO switch on the steering column. So just set it back to the forward position and you're good.
Thanks to all who had input here, and esp. Khail19, who I hope has his soon.

They werent very bright? I had the superbright blues from autodynamic in my HVACs and they were at least as bright as stock =o Looked great... not TOO bright at all! What you have looks good, though, if you can see it well enough... I guess a click or two below max light isnt that dim *shrug* Thanks for the pics though. Certainly looks better than my reverse indiglos =P I'll give it a try sometime in the future when I find those bulbs in stock =P ledtronics told me at least 6 weeks haha

Its plenty bright for me, and the HVAC is probably as bright as the green stocks. The dash ones just don't get as bright as the green, or MAYBE the green being a lighter shade just seems brighter. The green annoyed me to the point I turned them all the way down, where these are non intrusive.
My roomate just came home and took a look. He drives a VW GTI, so his lights are blue/red scheme. Anyways, his response was F%$# that looks awesome. Maybe that says it all right there?

Sweet!!
Dan,
That looks awesome! That's exactly what I wanted. I wasn't expecting the needles to change color, but I'm glad they did. The green looks way better with the blue. By the way, I've been playing around with that odometer display and I tried painting just the flat part on top of the bulb with blue model paint. It got rid of the bright spot in the middle, but it is still more teal than the rest of the lights. It also is a little dimmer, but still plenty bright. But yours looks good with the green needles and odometer, I might put mine back to green also. Looks great, now I really can't wait for my bulbs to get here! Nice work.:D

wow
that looks sweet
I bought 194/168 LEDs and regular bulbs but neither worked for me...my stock bulbs in heater/cluster are waaay smaller, like half of the 194s....and there is no way I get them in there even if I modify them...:(
Originally posted by Khail19 I used the 5mm bulbs though, which aren't as bright as the 4.5mm ones. the part # for the blue 4.5mm bulbs is WF150-OPB-014V on the invoice that I got with my bulbs. From this page- www.netdisty.net/ds/WF150/
You need 6 for the dash and 2 for the HVAC controls.
Hyper, these are the ones I used, no modifications to any bulbs... the HVAC took some pushing and what not but they obviously do work.

Khail,
I think you'd be happy with the green odometer, it helps bring out the needles, I unplugged the clock this morning while waiting for PT (Army crap) to start so I lost that annoying green glow there too. My MP3 deck has a clock so no need for two (shrug) Tonight or this weekend I am going in for the foglight switch, and cruise control switch. If nothing else I will disconnect the wire that makes them lighted all the time, but I will leave the wire that accuates the "on" lights. I am hoping the one extra LED I ordered will work for both switches, but I doubt it. Will follow up.
Also for anyone dead set on blue odometer MAYBE a blue bulb condom would do the trick. but I think the problem of a really bright center will persist no matter what. Maybe model paint the tip like Khail said, AND use a condom? I dunno.

Fog Cruise bulbs
1 Attachment(s)
I pulled out the fog light and cruise switches because I am impatient as hell. Anyone care to guess these bulb sizes? Or if you know how to find ou that would be great too!!!

I'm getting in a little late on this thread but I too put these ledtronics bulbs in my HVAC (4.5mm blue), and as in the pic posted by Khail, the outer edges of the dials are dim, especially the right dial.. Kind of annoying, and ledtronics says this is the brightest bulb they offer. Are you satisfied with that result Khail? How about you other guys that used a different bulb manufacturer?
Those pics of the guage cluster are definatly awesome.. I have the reverse indiglo, and I have to say yours are way better.
