Dash lighting? part 3

Wagon Guy 11-04-2002 08:22 PM

Yeah the bulbs are easy to get to on the switches but there's a catch... The switches use clear bulbs and the switch itself has the green in it. I already paid 90 bucks to replace my switches after messing up the first ones. I used paint but got aqua, then tried paint thinner, and messed up the plastic. Anyways I will leave all my auxillary switches/indicators green. Basicall I have all the analog dials blue, and thats a big enough change.
Hyper 11-04-2002 08:26 PM

(-3 bulbs in my order)

hmmm...I've just had a brainstorm
tell me that dash lights for WRX/GC8 have clear bulbs as well....or are they in condoms??...:(

cuz mine are clear

RED

Still waiting for one of you guys with a red dash or stereo to show the rest of us. I hope someone can please post a pic of red soon,I am waiting to decide and can't wait to much longer, big thanks to the first post of a red dash!!!! CHRIS......
chill105 11-05-2002 08:28 PM

Thanks!!!

Thanks for the tip. Getting to those cruise/fog bulbs was actually pretty easy.

I've done my entire dash, cruise/fog buttons, HVAC, and Stereo with blue bulb condoms. The only exceptions are the Outside Temp and Odometer LCD's. I would do LEDs, as I like the color and brightness better, but I don't think I could find any to fit the stereo, and I'm not confident enough to try that soldering stuff with those tiny LEDs and ohm resistors.

All of the colors match really well- it's sort of an aqua color. By far the hardest bulbs to get condoms on were the ones in my stereo- they're teeeeeeeeny and getting the stereo apart is a fairly involved process.

I'll try to get some pictures of the whole setup as soon as possible.

Also, Wagon Guy, you mentioned an MP3 unit in your car. What head unit is it? If I do pay the money and go for the LEDs (which I'm considering), I'd also need to buy a new head unit. Finding one which plays MP3's would be awesome. It has to be the same blue color as the other LEDs.

Thanks.
Hyper 11-05-2002 11:29 PM

guys?...
bumping my question
Bisk 11-07-2002 08:49 PM

OK, I want to change ALL the green in my WRX with blue. Can someone tell me what LEDs/Bulbs and how many I'm going to require? I was looking at the T1 4.5mm LEDs, whill I need anything else. Also, I was thinking of changing the needles to red aswell, so what will I need for that too?
Hyper 11-07-2002 09:45 PM

ok, here goes my question again

In my dash I have 2 different bulbs (size) here they are:

the smaller one is the same as in HVAC (er...the heater:D )

they don't have condoms, what about you - WRX guys?

oh, Bisk, needles is one thing you don't want to touch
Wagon Guy 11-07-2002 10:02 PM

Hyper, I just checked my old bulbs, I have 3 of the fatter ones with grn condoms. And 3 thinner ones without condoms. And 1 thin one with condom. I am positive I ripped the condom off a thin one from the HVAC extraction. Also my stock odometer bulb in in the dash still.

Bisk, buy 8 of the 4,5 mm, that will include the odometer light. The needles are going to be near impossible with blue bulbs. If you are trying to change out the switches to blue, condoms are probably your best bet. Someone did the condoms on page 5 of the thread, sorry I forget the name. Your needles end up green, the compass mirrir is green, the switches are all green, the clocks green if you keep it, the window switch is green... I just gave in to the inevitible, and left the small things green. The cluster, and HVAC was a major change and good enough for me. Good Luck.

Dan
Hyper 11-07-2002 10:15 PM

oh-oh...
that's not good news for me....I don't have any covers on these bulbs (except for HVAC) and my dash has some green sheet on the other side...I am begininng to wonder if LED will be strong enough to fight that thing and keep their original colour:(
Wagon Guy 11-08-2002 07:28 PM

Hyper,
Fight what thing?

The Led are dimmere than the stock lights, but personally I always found myself dimming the dash anyways so its perfect for me now.

Dan
Hyper 11-08-2002 08:40 PM

there is a green thin thing behind the dash face and the bulbs are clear so that's why I get the green colour...wo if I even change them to red LEDs, will I still get the green one??..
yellow5 11-09-2002 03:28 AM

Warranty concern...

I've read the entire thread, I feel like a dash lighting pro already. Im 1 step away from ordering the LEDs and going all blue. After reading everyones posts, and seeing all avail pics, I agree with Wagon Guy on leaving the auxilliary buttons green to match the odometer needles.

My concern, however is my warranty....will doing this affect my subaru warranty at all?
John #555 11-09-2002 07:31 AM

I decided to jump on the bandwagon! I'll be sporting a RED dash hopefully w/in a week or two - 5 LED's on backorder. Lucky for me I work pretty close to LEDtronics (and they allow pick up. woohoo!)
While looking for info i also found another excellent thread
Based on this I'm gonna try changing the stock radio, and possibly the buttons as well, with parts from Radioshack. So expect a lot of questions from me:o :D

yellow5,
I doubt your dealer will do much for you if your LED goes out... I wouldnt worry much. It's just changing bulbs, cosmetic stuff anyways.
khail19 11-09-2002 01:20 PM

yellow5,

If you are worried about warranty problems, just keep the stock bulbs and put them back in before you take your car in. I don't see how switching bulbs could affect the warranty anyway.

Well guys I'm to the point to where I only have one green light left, the power window switch. My entire dash is blue, including the odometer, and I put leds in the cruise and fog switches as well. The ledtronics bulbs don't work there, I soldered some leds from radio shack into the switches. The highest voltage LED they have in blue is 3.7 volts, so you need to solder in a resistor to bring the voltage to around 9 volts. I took apart the power window switch, the led in there is extremely small, and soldered right on the circuit board. It is also only using 2.15 volts. Radio shack doesn't have anything the right size, but I'm still looking.
khail19 11-09-2002 02:18 PM

Well I'm trying to put up a couple of pics, but I can't post attachments?????  Anyone know why?

bucknroses 11-09-2002 03:21 PM

khail,

what all have you done? could you list the bulbs you used and where? How did you do the odometer, and did you do the needles?
2fast4uWRX 11-09-2002 07:42 PM

I did the red. I still have to do the radio.

Bisk 11-10-2002 02:29 AM

2fast4uWRX, do you have directions on how to do the dash board, stock radio, etc? Can you forward me them if you do? Also, what bulbs did you use? What do you think of the results?

Thanks for your help everyone!
khail19 11-10-2002 02:39 AM

bucknroses,

I've done everything in blue LEDs except for the power window switch. I'm still trying to find a LED that will fit there. If you go back to the second or third page of this thread, I posted the link to LEDtronics.com and the part number you need to get, if you want blue. There are other colors on the same page. There are 6 bulbs in the dash cluster, and 2 for the HVAC controls. I did the odometer with the same bulb, but I painted the top of it with silver model paint to get rid of the bright spot in the middle. I'm not sure what you mean by doing the needles. They change from yellow to green when you change the bulbs. Like the old Ziploc commercial, (begin amazed child voice) "yellow and blue make green!" (end amazed child voice) :D

TonyWRX 11-10-2002 03:04 PM

are you sure you have the correct bulbs and size? Also, I'm not sure what exactly you mean by green sleeve. Do you mean the light condom on the bulbs itself?
2fast4uWRX 11-10-2002 03:52 PM

John-
Thanks, I like the red a lot. I think this is the color I would go with again. Good luck with yours.
Hyper 11-10-2002 03:52 PM

Have anyone done it to GC8 ??
I was messing with my friend's GC8 cluster today and his constructions is close to mine...anyway, I put a 194/168 bulb painted red there (where gas and temp meters are) and it wasn't bright...then we put a LED and we couldn't see a thing:confused:

he has that greenish stuff too so the bulbs are not powerfull enough to hit through that green sheet:(

so have anyone here done it to GC8?

bucknroses 11-10-2002 11:48 PM

khail,

I was thinking about the yellow/blue makes green thing before reading your reply, and yes i was thinking ziplock the whole time. I had read about the 6 for gauges, 2 for center, does that include the odometer or cruise/fog switches? I know where to get them I was just looking for a count. Is it a total of 8 (4.5mm's)? Or is the odo/cruise etc... separate? If so, are they the same size? thanks.

yeah...I keep seeing this for some time now, something with the script of the forum probably:rolleyes:

anyways, what I discovered in my and GC8 cars is that the bulbs don't have any green sleeves aka condoms aaand the dash itself (I mean the gaug face) have that green thing integrated in it...

we tried today to put a 194/168 bulb painted red in GC8 (where gas and temp is) and I was hardly able to see anything...it gave us the red colour but wasn't bright enough, and when we tried with LED it was even worse

that's why I am trying to find out how they did this

it is supposed to have that green thing too...or UK WRX are different?..
John #555 11-11-2002 03:48 AM

what about the clock??

Has anyone tried changing the clock bulb/led's? I got to the clock circuit board but couldnt figure out what to do. so far, i got the easy part done. HVAC is red now. I'm tackling the stock radio while i'm waiting for more LED's.

Hyper,
if i remember that thread correctly, I think the guy was just illustrating what he wanted. that pic might not be real.(photoshop?) I thought he ended up leaving the odo green...?
khail19 11-11-2002 01:41 PM

bucknroses,

I'm glad I'm not the only one that remembers annoying old commercials! Get 8 of the 4.5mm LEDs and you will be able to do the HVAC controls (2), and the dash cluster including the odometer (6). The fog and cruise switches require some modification, I bought two regular 2.7 volt LEDs from radio shack and some resistors and soldered them in place of the bulbs that were in there. I don't think anyone makes a plug in LED that small. They work great, if you are capable of a little easy soldering.

john #555,

I just unplugged my clock, since I have one on my stereo anyway. I did take it apart as well and changing the color of the display seemed beyond my ability. So I need to find something else to put there. I guess you can never have too many gauges, right?

Khail
John #555 11-11-2002 04:30 PM

Khail,
thanks for the info. now im thinking about adding a shift light where the clock is. i got 'Rev-Lite' (5-6 LED's showing adjustable range of 1k rpm) that i need to install -- i remember some of WRC (peugeot?) with shift light located near there.

about the radio, would i be able to just change the bulb covers/condoms w/o dealing with soldering?

how about some pics and instruction of fog & cruise button lights?

Thanks!
superhawk44 11-12-2002 12:22 AM

odometer?

Ok to everyone who has tried red, does the odometer change color as well? I saw one pic and it was still green, didn't look to good with the red,has anyone changed theirs? I am about to dive into this project but don't want a red dash with green odometer, little to christmasy for my taste, lol, thanks,CHRIS :alien: :alien:
khail19 11-12-2002 02:02 AM

John #555,

Shift light.... now there's something I haven't thought of yet. That's a good idea, do you know where I could see some pics of this Rev-Lite thing you mentioned? As far as the radio goes I'm not sure. I never had mine in long enough to mess with it. It was just the single cd player, not the 6 disc changer that the WRX gets. I've seen pics of radios with blue bulb condoms, but they turn out kind of an aqua color. The light from a regular filament is to yellow for the blue condoms to work well. And I'd love to post a couple of pics but we still aren't able to post attachments. If you give me your e-mail addy I'll try sending them to you that way. They are pretty easy if you can solder.

superhawk44,

I changed mine to blue and you can't see any green at all in the odometer. It's the same color as the rest of the gauges. I think red would work just as well. And Christmas colors have suck!

Khail,
check out www.rev-lite.com. I'm sure there are some US distributors by now. I actually got mine while back from the source in Aus. for about $100 with ship'g, but couldnt find time to install it.

So, I just tried WF150 (red) from LEDtronics on the dash and found it to be waaaay too dim. I'm gonna try the WF156 std to see if that helps. Maybe i'll try the 5V instead of 14V...

2fast4uWRX, exactly which bulb/LED did you use on your dash? I couldnt see crrrap on mine :(

2fast4uWRX 11-12-2002 12:26 PM

John- I didn't use any kind of different lights. I just took of the condoms and used a red marker to color the lights and the back of the HVAC and dash. I plan on putting the lights in at a later time but I am just broke right now.
Bisk 11-12-2002 12:42 PM

I had the dash assembly out this weekend and it seems that there are about 3 different types of bulbs. There are about 3 larger bulbs with a green condom on them, 2 smaller ones with a green condom on them and 1 behind the LCD for Odo (but it doesn't have a condom on it; does it light up green or is there a green film somewhere around the LCD?)
Does anyone know what the bulb types these are, so that I can order then from somewhere (ie Canadian Tire, etc) as I don't want to be putting LEDs in or modding.

On a side note, I tried following the directions on ScoobyMod to remove the HVAC cover, but I wasn't able to get it to come off. I got the cupholder out and that was as far as I got; where do I pull on the cover to get it to come off?

BTW: I have a 2003 WRX for reference.

I have some packages of these covers that come 10 to a pack. Got them directly from PartsExpress.

They sell them on there for $1.70 per package. However, when I bought them they charged me a crazy rate of around $8 (way too much). I don't really have time to do the changeover and plus I want to sell my car (need a larger one.) I have a few packages of these and will sell them cheap. I don't know, $3 bucks a pack which includes free shipping. I'm on EBay as well: spam_array

Nice move! you just saved $60!!! :D I'm gonna try the 5V (instead of 12/14V) LED's to brighten things up.
Btw, did you color the bulbs on the radio circuit board or did you color the clear lense that redirect the light to the buttons? I would think messing with the bulbs might be harder to Undo...
Thanks.
2fast4uWRX 11-12-2002 10:55 PM

I just got finished with the radio. I did color the bulbs on the radio but I just pulled off the condoms and left them in the sockets to color them. It turned out just like everything else. The only thing is that the LCD is not all that red. All well its better then the green. I still have to go back and touch up some spots on the tach and try to color the odometer. Let me know if you have any other questions.

how do you change the green light in the AC button? has anyone done it? I just realized when I turn on the AC the light comes on is GREEN. I want BLUE! It'll match the red HVAC perfect!
2fast4uWRX 11-13-2002 08:36 AM

John- Thanks for the pic. Where did you get that red film for the clock. That is the only thing I lack and it looks great.
Bisk 11-13-2002 10:47 AM

I ordered the LEDs from SuperBrightLEDs.com, I hope that they don't take too long. It says 5-10 days, hopefully not longer to come to Canada.

In a 2003 WRX, how do you change the color of the Odometer? I noticed that there isn't a condom on the bulb. Does it light up green or is there a film around the LCD screen?
verbal 11-13-2002 10:48 AM

I don't think those lights on superbrightleds.com will work. They are for side markers. Plus I don't think the light would fit in the dash cluster.

Also, if you used the 5v LEDs from ledtronics, wouldn't they just burn out since the dash gives 9.5v to the lights? Not sure if it is 9.5v, but it's around that number.
Bisk 11-13-2002 11:35 AM

I guess i should have read more about the LEDs. They are 8mm, so they would be too long. I sent them an email to canel the order, hopefully they will do that. I don't see why not though.

2fast4uWRX, I found it at a hobby shop in airplane section. One i got is about 6"x36" sheet. I used this for all lights for consistancy in output.

Gauges to macth

I see what everyone is doing here and I love it. I am waitng for my car to cross the ocean and get here. I just wanted to know if any of you got your gauges, if you have aftermarket gauges, to match the new dash color.

Thanks,
Tom
imprezive one 11-14-2002 10:16 AM

I'm trying to get my greddy black faced gauges to illuminate in Red. I like the fact that they match the stock instrument cluster well during the day (white numbers and tick marks with red warning area and black face) but I don't know how i'm going to go about changing the green light to red now. The replaceable bulbs are just clear so it doesn't use condoms. I have to somehow remove the bezel which seems to be connected to the glass/plastic that protects the gauge face. After that, two little screws on the back will allow me to slide the actual electronics/face/needle portion out of the housing and I can work on removing the green film behind the face, which I think is how it works. From there I think I can either switch to red bulbs or apply some of that red model film to the back of the face in place of it. Any idea on how to get the bezel off though without destroying a $250+ gauge? I am confident that once I get the bezel off I can get things to work.

I just did the 'mod'

I went to my local auto 'tuner' shop, and they have the dash lights which are made with blue glass. My Forester only took four for the dashboard, and I haven't quite gotten to the temp control panel yet. The bulbs (6) cost me about 3x.00.

It looks almost like the 'VW' guys......

Just my $.02

using red film over dash clock

Well, with 2 layers it was too dim for day time. Now with just 1 layer it's showing up closer to white than red:mad: oh well, it's better than green i guess.

IF you choose to apply color film in the radio, be sure NOT to put it over the LCD screen. go step further and cover the bulbs inside the metal housing. These films turned out to be very shiny creating a lot of glare, and you can see too much red even when turned off.

5v bulb lighting

I know that this may sound repetetive, but I have a source for all the dashboard mods people want to do.

It does NOT require removing the green film, it does NOT require special wiring. It's simple PLUG AND PLAY.

the bulbs are 5v and come in red and blue. these bulbs are powerful enough to override the green film, and provide the light color of choice. They leave the gauge needles stock color.

The bulbs come in packs of two for 12.99 per package. I don't sell these personally, so please don't move this to a sellers forum, or think I'm trying to sell anything.

This is for information only, so email me if you want to know more about these, and where to get them.

Ok now with all the different people experimenting with all these different choices, what is the final decision for the best lights?
Lets see:
1: radio buttons
display

2:HVAC bulbs

3:dash bulbs
odometer

4:fog and cruise bulbs

Like to see what the best light, most even distibution,no hot spots is. CHRIS....

Try and paste and use this form.
John #555 11-15-2002 12:11 PM

from my experience so far... changing to RED only

1 & 2. bulb cover or film for even distribution! LED's create hot spots. if using film on radio LCD, cover the bulbs, NOT the screen (creates a lot of glare)

3. film application is too dim. so is the 12/14V LED's. I'm waiting for 5V LED's

4. LED's (from what i've read and seen.)

anyone else?

Worst case scenario, you should be able to replace the switch (if the problem is in face limited to only the switch)

Shift Light

A friend of mine has his "check engine" light connected as his shift light in his integra. At first I thought that was a bad idea, but then when I drove it, it seemed like the best choice. It involved very little wiring and work, and its right there in the best viewable spot for the driver. Best of all, no extra lights to add, maintains the stock look that I like so much.

I don't know if there is a way for us to do that with the WRX, i'm looking around....if someone comes across any info, please post.
