Miranda & Jen, sorry to be reading that you two were not among the finalists. Based on what I saw at Nationals, either of you would've been just great for this.
I did see ESX has a press release, it does seem they found it hard to pick their finalists. Well, of those finalists, hopefully the winner of the sponsorship will make the rest of the girl Subie drivers proud.

Interestingly, I looked at imprezagirl's website, I think she misspelled Jamie's name in her bio. oops.

Looks like only 3 of them have anything to do with subarus much less nasioc.

They should post pics of these girls.
| Recce01 | 10-22-2004 10:26 PM |
Yeah, I spoke with Ali about this matter. If I had to speculate, I would say that when this idea became a reality and when the idea of "no experience required" was stated, the people of ESX had no idea how many girls would sign up for this. If I were him I would look at many different things, experience being one of them. Having worked for professional teams before I understand that there is no extra $$$ in case racers ball up the cars. So, i would pick the hottest girl with the most experience. Hottest, because she will get gobs of attention, most experienced, so I did not have to have 3 back-up cars for every time the car got a little weird half track. 1000 hp is a lot to handle if even for only 1/4 mile. Why is everyone so upset, it is DRAG RACING. and DRAG RACING IS GAY.....a little worse than nascar...barely
Miranda & Jen, sorry to be reading that you two were not among the finalists. Based on what I saw at Nationals, either of you would've been just great for this.
Thanks Debbie, that's very kind of you to say! Umm, well, I flubbed, actually. :o I simply never made the time to fill out the application. I can't honestly say "didn't have the time", because I certainly could have made the time. But I procrastinated. :o Oh well. To be honest, considering that the "8th or 9th hottest Subaru chick" wasn't picked, I don't think I would have had a chance, given that I'm probably about the 200th hottest Subaru chick. Honestly, I am surprised that Miranda wasn't among the finalists. She's beautiful, she's a racer, and she's a Subaru gal. Certainly seemed like a winning combination to me!
As for the ongoing discussion about whether the finalists have racing experience. I finally went out and looked at the finalist list. (Let me say first that I have not heard of any of these girls prior to today, so please don't think my comments are biased.) Seems to me like the listed credentials for most of these girls are pretty impressive and easily verified (or not). For instance, the profile for Kala Rounds lists a class win at the 2004 Alcan Winter Rally. That took about 30 seconds to verify with a quick visit to www.alcan5000.com. Her team took 1st out of 6th in class 3 and 3rd place overall. Nice job! :) On the flip side, Joanna Balsamo's profile lists autocross first among her racing experiences, however, I was not able to verify that with any online results. I have to say that that surprises me. I checked Atlanta Region's website and could not find any results for her for 2004. I checked Chattanooga Region's website and it looks like they mostly stick to rallycrosses (and I did find evidence somewhere that Joanna had competed in a Chattanooga Region rallycross in 2003). I didn't find any evidence of autocross experience on Google either.
And now to lighten the mood of this increasingly depressing thread, have any of you ever looked up your own names on Google to see what's listed? For me, there are the expected links to local autocross results, ProSolo results, local autocross newsletters (Phil and I were autocross co-chairs last year), local clubs' "How did our folks fare at Nationals?" pages, and even a link to the SCCAforums "Who are the STXL competitors at Nationals?" thread. But I find it interesting that "rated" higher than all of those links are links to white papers and presentations I've written as part of my day job (aka my career).
I was actually reflecting on that the other day - I absolutely love racing. But I'll never be a top racer and I know it. I hope to get a lot better, but I'm never going to be a Danica Patrick. Whereas I am definitely one of the top Oracle developers. So I guess it's just as well I don't attempt to pursue a career at racing - it's best to not abandon something I'm great at for something I'm just OK at... :)

Ms. or Mrs. rounds results in the Alcan rally are impressive, but the fact is that Paul Eklund did most of the heavy lifting on that particular Alcan team. Not trying to start a fight, but I was dissappointed to see that no hardcore Subaristas made the cut.

1) Christina Eldhert - Christina is 27 years old and lives in Casselberry Florida. She has been racing for eleven years and has
run as fast as 8.72 sec at 160MPH in a twin Turbo Ford Mustang. She has raced several turbocharged Mustangs during her career and was the first driver of a modular engined Mustang to win in FFW True Street competition.
PERFECT for subaru and the ESX team. Excellent EXPERIENCED driver, very professional, and has the look for the sport compact industry. I think she would be good compliment to the team. Anybody that has met her in person or has seen her drive would know what I'm talking about.
So is there a list of who got picked?
Check out the article on the ESX website.
http://www.esxmotorsports.com/html/selected.htm
It was a pleasure meeting the 8 finalists!
And for all of those who like to do nothing more than speculate... many if not all of the candidates have gone faster than Ali... making them more than qulaified in my book. 418 applicants down to 8 finalists... and not a single one is a "model"
Various interviews were conducted both in a group setting as well as individually. Subaru of America corporate staff were there as well and met each applicant.
Also the applicants raced 8 subarus ranging from automatic wrx wagons to legacy gt's to STI's against one another throughout the two day event in Pomona. Each had to prove they had the potential to be a worthy driver.

I would tend to agree. I know we have some very talented Subaru drivers out there, and I hope that there will be opportunities in the future for these women to really show what they're made of! I'm a little disappointed that references and claims weren't checked, though... well, at least we know now that a little lying goes a long way (though I seriously doubt I could get away with it if I tried, ).
Oh well... when I get all famous and stuff, I'll hold my own contest.. and trust me, a Subaru chick WILL be teh winn4r!

Quite honestly, I have to respect anyone who's been autoxing for 7 years; that's quite a bit more than me. :)

<2 cents>
I was autoxing next to a drag strip a while back and there were a bunch of modified VW bugs running around 10secs. I have to say it didn't look easy getting them down the strip. One flipped and required an ambulance, and at least one spun. It may be that dragging a street car requires little skill, but skill gets more important as you get into more serious vehicles.

no pics just some rankings in autocross and drag racing stuff. plenty on the net, i didn't want to link everything.
personally, i have met stephanie before. she's hot. she was talking it up to ESX when they stopped by chicago for the battle of the imports. they saw her race that day, she finished second in her field only because her trans broke at the final race.
she does have plenty of experience drag racing. the one catch is that her biggest motivating factor is the $40K salary...apparently honda doesn't pay.

It IS a sweepstakes and not a typical job. The whole idea was for it to be a contest to bring a female in to help market Subarus while giving them one heck of a prize. It is a contest and a marketing thing.... Don't read anymore into it than that. There are other females out there interested in something like this other than the few that frequent NASIOC ;)

heck, i don't even care about the prize. i'd love to represent this manufacturer. maybe i will one day.
Did you not read the thread at all? Its pretty obvious who they are talking about.
I really look forward to seeing who wins. I will be disappointed if ESX chooses the truly lesser qualified of the candidates, but I have hope that this will still make for an awesome marketing tool for ESX and Subaru alike.
For the most part, those women are completely, insanely awesome. While I make fun of drag racing with the whole "how hard could it be to go fast in a straight line" routine, controlling those cars seems like no small feat. That, and the cars look mean. ;)

It is a bit odd that someone who has been autoxing since they were 17(and are now 24) has no results under their name online and I have several results online after a year of autoxing. But I know a few people who dont put their real names down on the results so it is possible the results are there and we just dont know what to search under. Not likely but possible.

Hey, I was disappointed when I wasn't chosen as a finalist, but that's because I had a slightly different understanding of what they were looking for. When you look at the majority of the girls who were picked, I can TOTALLY see why I wasn't. I'm majorly underqualified when standing next to those drag racers. They would be the obvious choice, and I really hope that one of them wins!
At the end of the day, I still get to be involved with the motorsports I love. I wouldn't give it up for the world (though it would be nice if my hobby came with a paycheck). I'm sure the rest of the girls feel the same way. There is no magic pill that can make you become famous or really good at whatever kind of racing you do. It takes work. While a quick fix like this ESX thing sounds cool, I'm looking forward to setting the STi up for ESP class just as much.

Yeah, she's listed the Subaru Challenge on her site as well. Unfortunately, she's not signed up for it. $20 says she never shows.

Qualified?! It isn't a job application guys... It specifically says that experience isn't necesary.
This is supposed to be a good natured contest and that's it. Some people are taking it entirely TOO seriously.

Seriously, err... not seriously;), I don't see the problem with people voicing opinions. Remember, they're like a**holes. Everyone's got one (or in your case, one too many:D).

Wrong. Several of the girls have WRXs as daily drivers. There is a whole lot of speculation going on in this thread and very few actual facts.

Alright we'll agree to disagree. The drag racers and the rally'ers deserve to be there. But I don't think owning a fast car and running a few rally-x's qualifies you to drive a gazilllion horsepower beast that the ESX car is. If this were a normal driver search do you think they'd take joe blow off the street who's only run a few auto-x's or drag runs in his WRX? In my opinion, one of the girls driving those huge power drag cars would be the ideal canididate. And let's be honest, none of those girls are ugly...it's as much marketing and pretty faces as it is being qualified to actually perform the job. You're kidding yourself if you think otherwise.

Oh well, her loss I guess.
Ms. or Mrs. rounds results in the Alcan rally are impressive, but the fact is that Paul Eklund did most of the heavy lifting on that particular Alcan team. Not trying to start a fight, but I was dissappointed to see that no hardcore Subaristas made the cut.
Jon
As a friend and former car owner for Ms. Rounds, I'll take up her fight. Ms. Rounds is very capable behind the wheel of a car. She's logged many hours in the crazy seat of various rally cars. She's logged quite a few miles in the driver's seat of Subarus, including my 2.5RS. She has shown herself to be a very capable driver both on and off the pavement.
Why haven't most people heard of her? She's not the most well financed person on earth, so she takes what she can get... either her Mk1 Miata or other people's cars. She's an incredible little bundle of energy that will do an excellent job promoting anything she supports.
Go Kala!

There is so much speculation regarding people whom you have no personal knowledge of...
That being said, I can tell you first hand, that EACH and EVERY one of us as finalists would have been a great selection. All the girls were amazing! I didn't envy ESX's predicament in picking just one winner!
Here's a link to an article I wrote about the experience: http://www.fullthrottlemarketanddesign.com/esxsubaru.htm
