Dash lighting? part 4

CaptainMorgan 12-13-2002 11:51 AM
WRXs2Fast4U I took apart my fog light switch to change the bulbs in there! Then when I re-assembled the switcy it no longer worked! So now my damn fog lights don't turn on! Any suggestions?
Make sure that little floating contact tab in the button is the right side up. When I did my fog and cruise buttons I had it in upside down and when it slides back and forth it didnt make porper contact. Also check and make sure that the light that you put in gives the button clearance to come all the way forward. It should fit in the little "box" area that is marked off on the inside and make sure that ther is like a couple mm of extra space all around. Hope that helps a bit!

A friend of mine has his "check engine" light connected as his shift light in his integra. At first I thought that was a bad idea, but then when I drove it, it seemed like the best choice. It involved very little wiring and work, and its right there in the best viewable spot for the driver. Best of all, no extra lights to add, maintains the stock look that I like so much.

I don't know if there is a way for us to do that with the WRX, i'm looking around....if someone comes across any info, please post.
What lights up when he needs to check his engine? I don't think that little light would grab my attention enough while my eyes are focused on the road. An actually shift light throws out a large burst of light especially at night.

I swapped my dash to red! See my post here: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&postid=3116893#post3116893

Well obviously the CEL will be used for both purposes...if you can't differentiate between the two uses when it comes on then you shouldn't be modifying your car...let alone driving a sports car.

I don't think the original CEL is a little light...it is placed in one of the most visible areas of the guage housing. I'm surprised the CEL doesn't catch your attention...its designed to catch attention.

I think the CEL is a really good idea. I like keeping things looking as original as possible. If you like adding all sorts of loud bells and whistles (in this case, bright light that flashes everytime you have to shift) then an aftermarket shift light will be a good move for you. ;)

You're buying the wrong LEDs!! The cheap ones are 25pc min order (it was like $60 IIRC for my order), but the more expensive ones don't have a min qty, unless they recently changed their policy.

shouldn't be too bad. i know there are some engine management packages out there that use the CEL light as a knock detection warning light. i'm using my hks turbo timer as my shift light, i mounted mine where the clock used to be.

Can anyone give detailed instructions on how to remove the face of the HVAC controls to get at the two bulbs? I've read through the post and can't seem to find it so if someone could post it. Thanks

Has anyone tried any of these lights at all as dash/HVAC replacement parts? Do the 74 LEDs fit in the small bulb spots?

you might also try eled They have some great prices, and no min orders, and ship very quickly

Okay I'm gonna do my best to go through this by memory. I'm at my research lab right now so bear with me if I forget anything. It's really not that hard of a process but I can see how it could be scary the firs time.

Just as a safety precaution and insurance that you won't blow a fuse somehow, I recommend either disconnecting your battery or removing the dash lighting fuse before doing any of this (can't remember which one it is off the top of my head but it should be red and listed on the back of the change pocket in the lower left dash area that hides the fuse box.

Things you might need to do this: Flat head screwdriver, Phillips head screwdriver, masking tape, pliers, flashlight (?)

(1) I would say the first thing you need to do is get the cupholder out. This is accomplished by extending it as if you were going to put a drink into it, you will see two black screws on each side of where the sliding part comes out. Unscrew these and gently wiggle the whole assembly out, be careful when doing this because you don't want to just yank it, there is a small nub that catches on the surrounding plastic, so you need to do it gently and look for it.

(2) Next simplest step is taking off the HVAC adjustment knobs. You can do this a number of ways. First time I used some pliers with tape wrapped around them so they wouldn't scratch the plastic. After the second and third time I found that I had enough grip in my fingers to just pull them off. Be careful if you're using pliers because you don't want to crack/scratch anything.

(3) Now that you have the cupholder/knobs out you can start pulling the face off (part that surrounds the stereo din slots and the hvac knobs). There aren't any screws holding this piece in, it's all clips. I believe there are either 6 or 8 of them. I like to pull off the two top ones first and then make my way down each side, running my fingers along the gap and pulling the plastic off as close to the base of the clips as possible so I don't bend excessively or break anything. This will require a bit of force to pull the whole thing off but if you do it as I described you shouldn't have any problems. If you're pulling and you feel like the plastic is going to break, just try gripping it near the stress points so they have some support.

(4) What you'll see after pulling the face off is your headunit, the sides of the metal bracket that supports it, and your exposed HVAC face. I have a pocket under my single DIN headunit so I unscrew the whole double din setup (about four screws total, you will see them easily) and just set it on the passenger side seat. Be careful not to sctach any of the plastic with the metal edges of your radio when pulling it out. You can also disconnect the unit completely and set it aside if you'd like. Some people opt to not even take out the radio but I like having a lot of room to work with.

(5) Under the radio din slots is a black plastic face that clips onto a white housing which contains the actual HVAC knobs and bulbs. To get this off all you need to do is take a flat head screw driver and push on the clips that hold it on. Again, I can't remember exactly how many clips there are but I know there are two on top and two on the bottom for sure, you can easily see these. (Technically you don't need to do this step in order to get the bulbs out but if helps alignin them when you're putting them back in and doesn't take that much effort)

(6) Once the black face is removed you can see the bulbs for the HVAC controls. In order to take these out you need to reach around the back of the white housing that the bulbs are set in and give them each a quarter turn or so and then pull them back. You are now free to remove the green bulb condoms on these bulbs. I chose to use two red bulb condom covers from parts express for EACH HVAC bulb. I would recommend this as the best way to change the color of these lights. They're bright and shine evenly. I would not recommend using them on the speedo cluster though, they shine red but they're a little too dim for my taste. I'm planning on buying an 04' sti cluster and using that instead.

(7) Once you've modified your bulbs to the color you want using whatever method you chose, it's probably a good idea to plug them back in and reconnect your battery or fuse (with your lights off first) and then the interior lights on just to make sure they work. When you're ready to put everything back together just perform the steps in reverse, always making sure that you are careful not to scratch any surrounding plastic.

Hope this helped! Good luck.

Thanks for the great explanation, it was a big help

Another question - does anybody know the number/sizes of lights in the 98-01 Impreza? I know the console requires 2 #194 bulbs, but don't know about the dash.
Lachlan 07-24-2003 05:33 AM

I just did my stereo/HVAC/instrument cluster in Radio Shack $4 LEDs and I'd say it doesn't look bad. The only problem is that my fuel and temp needles are super bright green, but the tach and speedo needles are a dim puke yellow color, no doubt because the lamps don't line up directly under them. Has anyone done thiers in blue and gotten a way to brighten up the two big needles? I was thinking maybe of opening it up and wiring an LED directly under the needle base, but I'm not sure how and if i should remove the needles to remove the faces.
Lachlan 07-24-2003 05:35 AM

oh, and I don't know if anyone has tried this, but trying to get the LED's and resistors to sit in the little holders for the bulbs in the cluseter and HVAC was too much for me, so I just soldered them directly to the contacts--much easier!
