Is there a possibility of getting credentialed to travel outside of the spectator area?

Furthermore, anyone want to be a spotter for me?
No credentials needed to photo autocross. All you need is a spotter with you the whole time and to let the organizers know you are there taking photos. I would have gone to photo, but I was too lazy and couldn't find a *cough*sucker*cough* to stand with me the whole time.

This was my first tour at it was an awesome time. Unfortunatley i was one of 2 cars in sm running street tires. Ended up with an 8th place finish though. Which i consider not too bad considering what i was on. Definitly planning to fit some 18x9.5's on the sti with 285/30's so i can be competitive next time. Course layout was great, really a good lesson in speed maintance.
Robin2 07-10-2005 11:17 PM

I know that Nissan..... he's from Montreal, Quebec area..... about couple of hours from my place.... One of his friends (another Canadian) won D stock.... with his Type R.....

And about the person who started this thread for smack talk here it is:
I'm faster than YOU are! :p

It was a great weekend with two courses that were fun, challenging and exhilerating when driven right and at the limit. It challenged everything I've learned to date in how to drive a course. Being that I'm still getting used to R-compounds, after a quick calculation and being top 10 in PAX, I beat that solo-x kid (the one that started the thread)... something that doesn't come about that easily up here in New England.

Mark Chiles in his DS ... I mean GS Mini was flying on both days and beat even CS and a few other classes. ;)

SS.. what a site to behold as 19 drivers in either Z06s or Elises did battle. The 20th driver was one guy that brought out his '05 C5 base vette into SS... he didn't fare so well. He knew it too. His sponsor is 'Knife to a gun fight'. What a sight to behold.

There were some close battles in other classes. One of note was CM. (This is for you Jen!) There was a particular competitor that got a little peeved that there was a woman faster than him on Sundays runs. She's been running open for a while too and she's a damn good driver and knows the car.

Hopefully the tour will return for 2006.

The biggest joke of the weekend, however, was the press release that the SCCA put out. It mentioned this was the 1st time Devens has ever had a tour. Not so... most of the North East tours in the past used to be held at Devens. Heck, the two that I remember are 2000 and 2001.. and they happened before then too.

Got Pink? 07-11-2005 10:33 AM

I had a great time at my first and learned so much but I wish I have had more seat time in the elise since its so different than my STi. I also need to actually memorize the course before the first run. At local events we usually get 5 runs and I can ride along with my co driver and he rides with me and by the 3rd or 4th run i know what I am doing but with only 3 runs and no ride alongs I am still not sure exactly where to be on all the corners. Also the hoosiers on an elise don't make noise until its too late versus a street tired STi I am used to the squeals like the pig it is.

KC: I didn't get to meet you except for handing out times at the finish on the first day during your heat.

Next national event I will be driving my own car and hopefully do much better but overall I had a great time and the course was tons of fun, fast and fairly long too.

How is the site? Is the asphalt grippy? How big of a lot? Also, was SM affected by rain at all?

Nice times KC. Glad to see that you are adapting to the RX. BS should be a great battle in Topeka...
KC 07-11-2005 11:54 AM

It's as grippy as Toledo. Or I should say, Toledo is as slippery as Devens. ;) They're so similar that no setup changes are needed between the two surfaces by our fast guys.

The only group that was affected by rain was 1st heat on Saturday only... and at that it was drying (or dry but cool) through their runs. SM ran 3rd heat. BS ran 4th.

It's an old airfield in which we run on the runways and taxiways. The course was about .7-.8 miles long.
eclip5e 07-11-2005 12:42 PM

I had fun, althought I'm the second of the 2 in SM on street tires. My second day kinda sucked though. I think from this point on I'm going to invite KC to ride with me on my first runs for some good-old-fashioned instruction.

w00t! first ever tour win and only my second ever win at a national level! a big thank you to corey for sand bagging all weekend and to jeff for whackin that cone on his 3rd run on saturday.

nate - slow but clean, hoping to be fast and clean for topeka
Corey 07-11-2005 05:42 PM
a big thank you to corey for sand bagging all weekend
Nope... I don't give anything away. No sand bagging for me. I couldn't have ran the times you ran even with 3 more runs. You earned it. Good job

Good for her!

On the note of the peeved competitor, I think I ticked off a number of the local ESP competitors a few weeks ago when I ran my STX car in ESP and ended up one out of the trophies. I've never had any problems with male competitors when I race open before. But most of these guys wouldn't even TALK to me. There was one guy in a nearly-stock Evo that would actually talk to me. But the rest treated me like I didn't exist - going so far as to interrupt me and blow me off when I tried to offer my opinions on a topic they were discussing. :furious:
solo-x 07-13-2005 09:55 AM

she was a bit upset though that people kept telling her "good run!" when she just turned a time 2 seconds slower then her co-driver. her words paraphrased and edited "tell me 'good run!' when i'm in the hunt, not when i'm driving like crap!". she was actually thankful that i asked what the heck she was doing wrong when she told me her times.

her problem was looking ahead. sound familiar to anyone else? she and i talked it over for a bit, i gave a bit of a pep talk and she dropped 1.1 seconds on her next run and beat the rest of the guys in the class. her co-driver was the only one faster. needless to say she was in a slightly better mood, though still disappointed that she didn't run that time on her 2nd run. i asked what she did different and she said she finally started looking ahead more. that discussion/pep talk really helped me too, because all i was thinking about before my runs later that day was what i had said to her. looking ahead really DOES work!
KC 07-13-2005 10:20 AM

Yeah, that was a course where you had to visually 'hunt' for cones to find the key ones among some of the clutter. If there's one 'thing' I had about the course.. that was it.

Looking ahead was definitely key.
jcroy66 07-13-2005 10:30 AM
she dropped 1.1 seconds on her next run and beat the rest of the guys in the class. her co-driver was the only one faster.
Yeah I saw that. That was the main reason for my "Excellent! Good for her!" comment. :) Too bad she didn't have a better Saturday. :(

Pax is up: http://www.scca-chicago.com/solo/indexes/results/2005_tour_Devens.pdf

Some of the locals kicked ass.

KC - nice top-10 finish on a realistic index. Right up there with the soft GS and DSP cars.
KC 07-13-2005 12:52 PM

Yeah, don't get me started on DSP Pax this year.

BS: .821
DSP: .822

AUTOwrXER 07-13-2005 01:53 PM

DSP, ESP, FJ, and GS are Downy-soft.

Nate didn't break the craptastic STS Pax barrier, however. Heyward still uses 1.5 seconds per day as the "margin of error", and I tend to agree with him (so long as the surface is grippy concrete).
solo-x 07-13-2005 02:37 PM

sts index might be a little steep, but it is impossible to tell when SS, ESP, DSP, GS, etc all have such a soft index. 5th trophy spot in SS was 2 seconds off the pace and still paxed in the top 10.

nate

ps. for the record, I never expected to pax 1st or even win for that matter. i'm psyched i won, a top 20 pax finish is just icing on the cake.

Well, we all should have driven better then, huh? (according to someone locally... a few years ago).
