arr......I have the list at home, here is a few of the main weight saving mods I have done:
Titanium cat. back exhaust
Odyssey dry cell battery
removed spare tires, jack and tools
2-pieces aluminum hat brake rotors
aluminum coilover suspension
removed IC water sprayer tank, lines and nozzle (I am a circuit racer, not a drag racer, beside it doesn't help the power at all as far as I am concern, I think it help when the car is on the dyno, not moving)
removed rear middle seat belt (car is so small, no one would ever ride in the rear middle seat)
removed intake silencer.
removed any bracket that I don't need.
Basically I replaced OEM parts with aftermarket parts that are made out of lighter material. And removed any OEM parts that I never use/not important to me.
Haven't done the JDM bumper beam yet, it is on my to do list. I can take out about 100 more lbs with my planned mods :D

No, that is the weight of a S202 which is a Spec-C with a few more add-ons in weight and more HP.
The Spec-C is around 2880

3275 for a stock STi is a piece of info I was wondering about, all I know is Subaru list it as 3263 lbs. I never weighted my car stock.
I work hard on taking weight off the car, the problem is I need to put some kind of radio in the car, and stereo equipment add weight :(
I got the 3110 figure from corner weighting scales too :)

sorry, pet peeve. And the IC spray isn't just for drag racing and dyno runs. It's on there with track racing in mind. You're pretty wrong about your assumptions of the water spray kit. There is a thread here a couple of years old with actual data on intake temps pre and post water spray. It made a definite difference in how fast the IC cooled down, cool/dense air= more power.
That's a nice healthy bit of weight loss though.

umm....ok, maybe it help. Personally though, when I am driving fast on the track or on the street, I am too busy focusing on driving a good line, braking, shifting, looking at the tech, looking for cops.....etc......to reach down and hit the switch to spray water on the IC. Since I never use it, I got rid of it to save 3.5 lbs. :p I hitted the switch once on the freeway when I first bought the car, all it did was the water pump came on for a few seconds and I didn't feel any additional power........ makes me yawn :o :D

The spec C uses a plastic hood.... my guess is its a wee bit lighter.
| ellisnc | 02-11-2004 06:49 AM |
Yeah basically there's no way a stock Spec C is under 2900 pounds. I think right under 3000 would be about right. My WRX was just over 2800 pounds last year and I think it should still be around that this year even though I added a roll bar. I did take other stuff out though. I'll check it when I corner weight it in a month or so.
Nice work on the weight down measures. What suspension do you have? I doubt much of it is aluminum. Most coilovers can be made with aluminum bodies if they're going on a U/L control arm suspension where the damper doesn't undergo any lateral loading but on the strut suspensions they're usually mostly steel. However, lighter than stock at any rate.
The Spec C uses a plastic hood? That's a new one to me... did it start with the JDM 03 model?

For TRACK racing, you'd spray it on the straights between shifts where the combination of fresh air and cool water gets blended and IC temps would drop considerably. In the corners, agreed, you'd have no time to do it with both hands on the wheel.
Drive slow on the streets to live for the next track day.

Addict - Consider swapping out your trunk/wing for a slick one. There's weight to save there ;)
That Stock STi Bill mentioned is mine. It has a full sound system with 2 factory subs, CO's, RSB, RSB, and a "V" brace. She was at 3/4 on the gas.
With ride heights set at 22 1/4 (lower wheel lip to fender) she tipped at 48.1 and 51.9. I'm going to let the CO's settle a bit more then balance it 50/50 in race trim

Ivan knows the most important thing about the friggin car, how it feels to own it. So he may or may not know the full title of it. I'm sure Ivan is sorry he hurt your car nerd sensibilities.
Who the hell are we to be even commenting on this, when we have bonafide owners on the board now. Let them put these stupid arguments to rest.

Yup its the same red as the US WRX
Yeah on the official paper work it still says Type RA. And I did get in from Litchfield's, they are a great company to deal with, and they know there stuff.
The Spec C has an Aluminium hood, i have been working on one today and will be again tomorrow, i see them all the time. It is not plastic, trust me! ;)
The Bugeye Spec C was called a TypeRA, the latest blobeye omits the TypeRA from all the badging, i'll try and confirm the real name tomorrow if i get the chance. I know Iain Litchfield very well.
The IC water sprays work, i have the Auto version on my car, so dont have to press anything whilst driving, i also have a charge temp display in the car and when the water runs out the charge temps go up. It's not a huge amount of diference, but it is noticable. They do nothing for you in standing/slow trafic, but at speed under load the IC sprays do work. The scoop works fine for me at 160MPH totoherbs.
keep it friendly guys, lifes to short to get wound up about a bit of plastic, or aluminium. ;)

Ivan hasn't confirmed whether it's plastic or not, don't put words in his mouth like I did, that was ecsm that said it was plastic. Why he would mislead us? I don't know.
You argue because you like to be right, period. Just like everyone else. What makes you think Ivan isn't a "real" car enthusiast? Just because he misnamed his car? That's pretty pathetic, that's like dissing people for calling the Lancer Evolution VIII an Evo. But I guess we all have to make ourselves feel superior in some way right?

who cares what the spec C hood is made of. None of us US guys will get one. It's hard for me to believe that it's plastic, though. Back on subject, ellisnc has a 2800 lb USDM WRX? How'd he manage that? That must be SWEET! My car could stand to lose a few hundred pounds.
| afpdl | 02-12-2004 12:15 PM |
Ellisnc tore off alot of stuff and when he was done he tore off some more stuff;)
As for the hood ecsm also thinks the dccd can give him 100%rwd not because hes tried and verified it but because he read it in a magazine just like he read the hood is plastic. He never actually said he went and checked to see if the hood was plastic.

sorry, pet peeve.
Your right it is for the track, but if you use it at the track its last about 5 minutes. For it to have an effect at the track it needs to be on 90% of the time. The Spec - C tank of 12 litires would be better but then it adds weight.

It lasts for 8 minutes 20 seconds flat out at the nurburgring, then the warning light comes on and you have an aditional 10 squirts at your disposal. Call it 13 miles if you like. Spec C will last aprox 20 minutes, but i could alter that by remapping the ECU trigger points if i felt like it.

I can make a spec C drive like a RWD car, but only when the rear wheels loose traction and are spinning, when that happens 100% of the torque goes to the rear wheels. If you havnt broken traction then the car works between 65:35 and 50:50 depending on diff setting.

John, just corroborating.
Ivan said he took his car to a beach and got only the rear tires to spin suggesting 100% of the torque got transfered to the rear.
JDM, maybe you misunderstood me, I already said you were right, you win. I'll get on the schoolbus already! Damn!
But your classifying someone as a "real car enthusiast" based on their paper knowledge of a car is absurd. ALL of us here are real car enthusiasts. We wouldn't own these bizarre little japanese imports if we weren't. We just with differing levels of enthusiasm for detail. Wouldn't you agree? That's like saying someone can't truly appreciate bread because they don't know the farm the wheat came from, or the strain of yeast that made it rise. etc. It's absurd.
I suppose the next thing you'll do is claim Lichtfield Motors aren't true enthusiasts because the SELL Spec-Cs with type RA in the paper work:huh:
It doesn't seem like you're trying to educate people as much as belittle them into thinking like you do. We can live with a know it all, because frankly we're here to learn, but a pretentious prick can take a hike.
That being said. Have you tried getting rid of some of the sound dampning stuff under the carpets and rear seat? Or is that overkill? If you're gonna put a stereo in there, you probably wont notice the sound insulation being gone anyway. And you can offset a bit of the stereo's weight.
I did the bumper beam swap on a friend's car and it felt like a huge weight savings. I didn't bother weighing everything out but my puny body could tell the difference for sure trying to heave that bumper around. Also, I can't remember if there is a front sub-frame on the STi, that could possibly go. It's suggested that it's just there for impacts anyway.

I know John I can make my car do the same thing;) The magazine was implying that you could make it rwd period traction loss or not. They didnt say you could open the center diff or lock it or put it anywhere in between. They said with the dccd you can make it a rwd car.
