DIY - JDM RA Rally Roof Vent Install part 5

NewShockerGuy 10-24-2007 04:36 PM

Off topic question...

Does anyone's vent make creaking noises..?

Mine does and it's weird when it does it.

I can go over 100mph with the vent open and all you can hear or feel is air noise...

Sometimes when I am only going 50mph I hear a creaking noise from the spec c vent...

I can't pinpoint if it's the latch or if it's actually the hinges...

Only hear it sometimes when it's open. When it's closed I don't hear anything out of the ordinary..

It's on tight so it's not a matter of something being loose,,, I think it's the roof maybe, but damn it can get annoying at times...

WOW nice ! I wanna get one of these installed asap !
Yesitsdrew5310 03-15-2008 01:24 AM

Thanks man! I have loved that I did it since the day I installed mine. Once you see the look of the car with the vent open, you will want to look at it all the time with the vent open. haha.

Anyway here is an updated photo of my car:

Great write up! I do suggest tape for it gets extremely messy!!!!!
But it looks great and was a breeze with your write up.

Ur car looks a lot more aggressive with the fog lights in the bumper. :D

Congrats

maybe you hear a creaking noise because you've gone 100 plus. i will go 80 with it open adn that 20 miles over what they post you should go. i would never go faster seeing all that does is add stress to the scoop.
mccallrl 03-30-2008 07:49 PM

This write up should really be a sticky, nice job man.

Now I really want a roof vent :)

I always like to drive with the windows down a bit, but the noise gets to me sometimes, this would be perfect!!

Okay, ...dusts off thread... Now. I did some searching on japanparts.com and couldnt seem to find these anymore.

sorry, I cannot direct link the page. theirs don't work that way.
thewerxracing 04-30-2008 04:41 PM

thats it! Thank you Sir!

Wow, over 400$ to get one to me... I guess it gets put farther back on the list...
JavaBlack 04-30-2008 07:32 PM

First off i wanted to say awesome write-up i managed to come across it a month or two ago and tagged it since it is definatly a project for warmer weather. And not that it is pretty much 60-70 every day now i am looking to have mine done coming up in the next month. As far as the price i managed to come dig this up in my endless search for parts http://www.subaruwrxparts.com/products/group-roof-vent-kit-p-1159.html i can't garentee it is everything needed the dicreption is pretty vague.

No you can drive with it open at any speed. It says NOT to open it while you are driving faster than 60 or 80 khm.. can't remember and don't want to run to the garage to check.

It's just an annoying creaking noise that is driving me nuts...arg!

lol

yes, the price has gone up over the years.
weak dollar does not help.
keep an eye open for group buys & sales.
this was the most recent

I got mine quite some time ago in this one:

:D

you can always PM them and ask if there might be a sale coming for this year.

don't give up.
and watch the classifieds too.
sometimes folks buy them and then lose their nerve.
;)
not sure if this one ever sold or not

miiike 05-06-2008 11:46 AM

My question is could I ash my ciggarette out of it?
ekw 05-06-2008 01:57 PM

well, you 'could'.
but I think when you are moving air is rushing IN. that might make it tricky.
and if you're not moving, the ash would sit on your roof.
NewShockerGuy 05-06-2008 06:11 PM

Speaking of ciggarette some asshat decided to throw in a ciggarette butt into my car via the opening of my spec c roof vent... looks like I won't be leaving it open now...arg!

I ****ing hate asshats!

you are welcome.
mine is going in this weekend, I think.
:D
finally.
ekw 05-15-2008 03:43 PM

actually did it this past weekend.
thanks to all the trail-blazers who went before me and made a contribution to make it much easier.

I will add my 2 cents here:
do not remove the map light bracket.
there is no need.
as the pic below from my install shows, not only is it NOT in the way,
there are two screw holes in the roof vent frame piece that actually line up with the screw holes from the map light.

using them will make the frame that much "tighter"
and make it pretty easy to get it back in the exact spot that it was in after you remove it to cut.

also - when you cut your roofliner cut very conservatively at first.
with the roof liner uncut, it is hard to get the trim piece in accurately (tight) to mark the hole well.
my original marked hole went too far toward the rear of the car.
fortunately, I cut it out well short (on purpose) and checked as I could get the trim in closer.
this let me get a near perfect fit, and the flange of the trim piece hid my mis-marked line.
I guess it would have hid the mis-cut hole as well, but it is always easier to make the hole bigger . . .

not sure if this thread is linked in here anywhere, so I will post it:

this is another very helpful & informative install guide.

My damn lid/handle is rattleing and it's litteraly driving me nuts.

Anyone have this problem. I've taken the lid off and expanded the pin in the handle and that worked for about a 1 month and now it rattles again...arg!

Thanks,

yep or twist the handle slightly like i do.
NewShockerGuy 05-16-2008 11:06 AM
yep or twist the handle slightly like i do.
When you twist the handle don't you put stress on it when opening and closing it.?

I am going to take the damn thing apart again because the constant "clicking" from the handle is making me mad.

When I go above 60mph the wind is pushing the handling and it's causing the handle to "wiggle" move in the end.. so i could put my finger on the bottom of the handle when it's locked in the "up" positiion (lid open) it's pretty easy with my finger to just unclick it....

yay... :-(

so, I guess the latch mechanism wears over time?
because mine (not a week old) is stiff as can be.

how long ago did you put yours in Nigel?
it was over a year ago, wasn't it?

I've had mine for almost 2 years now....

And believe me.. any chance I can use it, it's open...lol

So I would say it's being open and closed many times a day for at least a constant of 7-8 months a year..

When I first got mine as well it was stiff as hell... I was like wow.. this isn't going anywhere... no though it's disappointing me because it's much much looser....

-Nigel
ekw 05-16-2008 01:51 PM

that sucks.
I wonder if the mechanism can be replaced?

or the worn parts.

my dad used to have a buddy who was a machinist (since retired) who could make alll kinds of stuff like that.
I wonder if it just needs new hinge pin(s).

I have the same problem, it seems like it's a defect in the manufacturing of the latch. It happens mostly when I'm going under 50mph.

For the last few months, I've just been driving with mine "half-open" (eg: not clicked into place vertically,) and this seems to help a lot. Only problem is if I drive faster than 60mph, the airflow against the vent will force it open all the way, and when I slow down again, the rattles are back.

I keep meaning to try putting some foam tape in the bottom of the latch to see if it will help minimize its ability to move around, but I never get around to doing it. If I ever do get around to it, I'll post about the results; but who knows when that's going to be...:o

Yea! All I know is it's annoying as all hell because it's just a rattleing/clicking noise all the fing time..........arg

If you do that please take pictures because I am willing to try anything to get this damn rattle to stop.
It might get to the point where I don't even drive with it open anymore and just open it when I'm marked...(for show I guess :-( ) But I have gone well over 100mph before with it open and it was fine in the beginning..

I guess I will take it apart tonight an take another look at everything...

There is a little piece of bent metal inside that makes it so the handle click... and I did take this out and bend it more and it seemed to fix it for a while but now it's easier to open and harder to close, so I might just flip the metal and see if it makes it harder to open and easier to close...which would be ok in my book cause once it's shut, it's not popping back open..

Im loving reading all this informative effects. My buddy and I are getting roof vents for our 05 wrx and STI and it shall be very fun. A little scary but nevertheless fun
NewShockerGuy 05-16-2008 03:39 PM

Yea it's a very fun install.. honestly not that hard at all... people think your nuts for cutting a hole in the roof... but it's not bad. It's super thin too so it goes by really quickly... the entire project took me like 6 hours or so but I'd say 3/4 of that was the damn headliner..lol That thing is a PITA... The actual cutting of the roof took me 8-9 minutes with my jigsaw using a metal blade. I didn't even have to go back to make the hole bigger...it was perfect. Just remember to measure, measure, measure again and then when you think your right measure one more time to double check..lol Once you drill the first hole there is no turing back. :-)

Yesitsdrew5310 05-17-2008 01:02 AM

It's been over 2 years and mine still works like a charm. Going into this not knowing much about it it took my friend and I 6 hours including taking the photos for the DIY. I agree, it was a very fun mod.

Cheers,
Drew Brashler
NewShockerGuy 05-17-2008 07:16 PM

Took it apart again and flipped the metal piece inside... I know why it's getting lose, the plastic is wearing against the metal tab inside... So eventually it will make the plastic lip on the handle from inside round like it's doing already...arg.

Guess there is nothing I can do short of buying a new vent lid here in a couple years after this handle wears out... :-(

Still a good mod... I drove it with open today.. just love it :-)

Hey I am an 08 STI owner and I'm going to try to install one of the GD Spec C Roof Vents here pretty soon... Haven't gotten it yet but since I've only seen one installed (without progressive photos) and I've checked both english and japanese pages, I wanted to share my experience via photos and tips about what's different on an 08.

But before that, I wanted to confer with all you guys to get your much more experienced input about this type of thing. Tonight I pulled off the visors, maplights, and a bit of the pillar (seeing the airbag thing inside really had me paranoid). The first thing I noticed is that there aren't the two mounting holes on the frame piece at the top of the windshield. These would definitely have to be drilled. The map light bracket seems to be shorter than previous years so it should be fine to leave it there I assume, if it was fine for previous years.

Anyway here's some pictures tell me anything that comes to your mind about what you see as far as installing a roof vent might relate:

holding the trim down with the camera pointed towards the rear of the car

again, a little closer and more tilted upwards. The wire is for the mirror compass I'm sure it will have to be rerouted along with the power lines etc.

from the other side looking through the hole where the maplights were

I don't have proper measuring tape so my finger ruler shows about 1.5" angle from the frame piece to the roof

thanks for any ideas/comments you might have :D

Step 13 Install the Rubber Seal:
Now grab the gasket that was included with the vent. This has a type of glue inside it where the rubber attaches to the metal. You need to twist the gasket out and slip it over the metal. On my gasket there was a white dot where the center was. My hole was smaller than the gasket so we cut the gasket in the center and then cut it to the correct size using metal sheers.

Note: Make sure there is a rubber lip sticking up. This is what makes the seal between the roof and the vent flap. Some other DIYs have this upside down.
I think he meant upside down.
well, it is a rubber "circle"
and mine was quite a handful to get sorted out.

you can install it "upside down" "right side up" or possibly "inside out".
the "slot" that is in the rubber that goes around the sheet metal should show you which way to turn it.

I would think it would be hard to put in "inside out" but probably not impossible.

from the looks of that picture -
the slot that is supposed to surround the sheet metal is pointing STRAIGHT UP.
try pulling it off and re-orienting it.
there should be rubber "lips" that sandwich the sheet metal you cut.

the piece needs to be twisted so that the part that is now "up" goes on the outside.
pull it off & twist it so the slot is on the outside of the circle.
then make sure you have the top & bottom the right way.
then slowly push the sheet metal into the groove/slot in the rubber.

Following these directions and tips from a friend who installed his and others, I was able to add the spec c roof vent to my 08 STI with no trouble at all. The front mounting holes will need to be drilled in and the arms that go around it bent slightly but overall it was super simple. Pics of the install are posted in my member blog at iwsti:

I'm shopping around at http://www.japanparts.com and i am wondering if this roof scoop(191-001-005) is going to allow the spec c vent (153-037-001) to open fully?
Following these directions and tips from a friend who installed his and others, I was able to add the spec c roof vent to my 08 STI with no trouble at all. The front mounting holes will need to be drilled in and the arms that go around it bent slightly but overall it was super simple. Pics of the install are posted in my member blog at iwsti:

I came here specifically to see if someone with an 08 had done it. glad to see it works!

I took pics just so other 08 owners would have more info than I did :) I only drew confidence from a single photo I found on minkara that showed a finished install.

Glad I could help

Looking into doing this, but saw some people were having trouble with worn out handles vibrating and were contemplating replacing the vent. If it helps, i was browsing japanparts and found a replacement handle for the vent. part 170-079-001 price: ~$27
