Editor-in-Chief Csaba Csere will be at the wheel of a Subaru WRX STi part 3
They are from a 2001 CART Indycar--in my former life as an Indycar Team Manager and Engineer, aerodynamics were my favorite discipline. Knowing some of the inherent understeer characteristics in the STi (most 4WD cars, for that matter), I opted to use some air to solve the problem along with a number of engineering/setup work. The Perrin PSRS pieces also helped, but I wanted to adopt some of my experience to an STi as no one has ever seen. They aren't for looks (although I knew they'd freak people out), do work, and provide a known amount of downforce and drag at specific speeds the vehicle operates at. At the 25hrs, some of the press started calling the car *The Flying Nun*...

I have and Indycar rear wing I wanted to mount, but without time to work on some underbody areodynamics, I would have only induced greater understeer--that wing makes BIG downforce.

I have an article in this months TPR (www.tprmag.com) on street/strip aero, and have the 2nd part on road racing aero due tomorrow night.

ART is supposed to be a manifestation of knowledge learned in coslty series, distilled down to something the average racer can use to their benefit, but also can't find anywhere else, be it parts or engineering and design services. That's not a plug, just what we're about.
Ooooh thanks for the link! I recently switched my major from mechanical engineering to aerospace engineering...fun times ahead for me i'm sure

"So when can we buy the race-proven fender wings?"

Early 2006! I have 4 sets prepared already.

I'd like to say congratulations on a great showing for subaru Sti , you guys did a great job, if racers didn't know about or respect the STi they will now. I recall seeing that car being loaded on a trailer prior to the C&D event and I asked who was driving the car and what experience the driver for the had with the Sti. I found out that ESX didn't pick the driver for the event someone else did etc. A week or so had past when I asked someone at ESX what was up with the car how did it do at the event. I was told it finished 4th and the event would air in a few weeks. After I saw that C&D tuner car event and the poor showing that the ESX Sti put on, I felt that the car wasn't prepared properly for lack of time , I asked Ali to look up Gary Sheehan the next time he planned on entering one of his cars in a road race event. I'd like to think that he listened to me. ;)

So do you think that the new 06's mini venturis can actually have an effect at speed? At what speed due venturis actually work and do you need a true flat bottom? there is obviously the ongoing debate on the true functionality of the stock Sti wing and aero details (pseudo canards, flat bottom cladding, etc.). What's your take on the factory aero?

They certainly have an effect at speed. Ungoverned they new STI will hit 160+. When the top german car magazine Auto, Motor, Sport tested the Evo against the STI at the Ring last year ... they were amazed at how much down force the rear wing created ... it's why they had to add those front side protrusions to help balance the car. The wing would otherwise force the nose up.
Amen--and to finding the $500K I need to complete the build and field the car for a season of WCGT... ;-)
seconded!

althought Grand Am Cup would be a cheaper class to run..just not as cool!

time to run that motor on high boost for 30 hours on an engine dyno :)

I don't think its been mentioned yet, but justracing.com has some driver and crew comments from the team. In particular I thought that Marco Romani's comments on the car were very interesting.

Man, all those driver's name stickers must give one helluva blind spot. :p

Its too bad there is any video, I'd like to see the real action

I have in-car of my first stint. I've got to rip it from DVD and post some of it up.

I was told VERY clearly that the STi would not be welcomed in GAC. I'm hoping the Lock's effort in GAC with the Legacy makes everybody proud--they are a sharp bunch.

Yeah so were we. It was one of the models we explored when we set our sites on GA. They said that in order to make a 300hp car competitive, they would have to give us too much of a weight break, something they didn't like to do for AWD cars. OR they would have to allow an expensive engine build, something they wanted to keep out of GS. They like to keep those AWD cars were they can control them, and means heavier than the rest of the class, and on the thinner tires, like our legacy :).
