That first season with Sauber proves that RD will take a risk if he thinks the payoff is big enough.
Heidfeld out-qualified Kimi 10 to 7 and beat him in points 12 to 9 with more finishes. The safe choice would have been Heidfeld, who was already under contract, had tested for the team, and seemed to fit that McLaren automaton driver mold perfectly. That was Heidfeld's problem, to the team he was a known quantity, they knew how he'd run, while with Kimi the sky was the limit.
But allowing someone to go in F1 first then signing them is very different from putting them directly into F1. The last person he did this with was Andretti and that didn't work out very well. I still think Hamilton will get the seat, but I don't think Kimi is a very good example because many things are different.

You're missing my point.
The choice RD faces with Hamilton/Pedro is very similar to the one he faced with Raikonnen/Heidfeld.
One was a known quantity, the other risky but with bigger potential.
Yeah Kimi had a year of F1, but compared to Heidfeld he had next to zero experience. The gap in seat time is bigger when comparing Pedro to Hamilton but the choice is basically the same. Take the safe option or the risky one.
I think Ron has shown that he's willing to take the risky option.

No, I get your point, I just don't agree they're the same thing. Heidlfiend and Pedro are known, but Kimi was known to be a good F1 driver at that point already, Hamilton isn't.

thank you?? i believe I was the one who sent Bob the e-mail :o
i think you guys are arguing two different points here. Stu, you're looking too deep into the situation. Ferg is merely pointing out that Dennis is willing to take risks, which is what he is claiming Kimi was. I think everyone can agree that Kimi was the risk while Heidfeld was the safer choice. The point isnt that Hamilton and Kimi are the same, its just that they are in similar circumstances. And last time that circumstance happened, Dennis took the risky choice and it paid off. So theres a good possibility he will do the same.
if thats a swing and a miss Ferg, then correct me.

I agree that Dennis is probably going to take the risky choice because he can. But Ferg is making the point that they are the same, which I just don't agree with, a season in F1 is a big deal.

he wasnt making that point. He was making the point that the situation was the same, dont worry about who the drivers were, just consider the situation. He only said names to give you a real life example to validate his point.

I was just thinking about that. :)
The 2006 thread started when Toyota launched their car in November of 2005... I think the proper 2007 thread should wait until the first car launch.
In the meantime we'll have to get an F1-Off Season thread going after the hoopla from Brazil winds down.
I remembered something RD said back when he was asked why he had opted for Kimi over Heidfeld. He said something to the extent that since Nick had tested so much for McLaren, they knew exactly how fast he was, while Kimi being an unknown had the potential to be much faster. Sure it was a risk, he could have been a sinker, but Dennis felt that it was worth gambling on.
I have the feeling he's thinking along these lines again when faced with a choice between Pedro and Hamilton. Macca know exactly how fast Pedro is as well as how he goes in the races, Hamilton on the other hand has the potential to be the fastest guy out there.
Without beating a dead horse; agreed on all points now. I never understood why people thought it was a good idea to hold off on Hamilton, other than Hamilton's own trepidation...which if I were RD would be somewhat nervous about.
Oh and do not start a 2007 thread yet. :)
McLaren set for 2007 image overhaul
McLaren are set to have a major image overhaul next season when they begin their relationship with new title sponsor Vodafone.
Team boss Ron Dennis has revealed that his company will have an all-new look and philosophy from next year - although he has not expanded on exactly what the team are planning.
"We are going to move our team in a slightly different direction," said Dennis, who has sometimes faced criticisms for his team appearing too corporately 'cold' from the outside. "And that direction, as we share it with you, will hopefully practically demonstrate that we want to be part of people's dreams.
"That is not just dreaming about the past, the present or the future but more about the aspirational aspects of people to be something. Young people wanting to become Grand Prix drivers or astronauts, or doctors. And we will try to use the competitiveness and objectives of our team to create that inspiration."
Dennis has made it clear, however, that the change of image for the team will not have any impact on their bid to return to race-winning form.
"It is not in any shape or form going to detract from our clear objective of winning races. That will always be there.
"But we want to try and adopt a different stance on how we address the spirit and character of the team. It is after a lot of deep thought and conversation that we have come to that conclusion."
The image overhaul will also coincide with the arrival of Fernando Alonso, who many within the sport hope remains as accessible and open about his feelings as he has been allowed to be at Renault.

ISo who gets the donuts? 1st place only?
Two or three years ago, someone on the west coast offered a dozen Krispy Kremes to the three podium finishers in the Motorsports.com Pick 6 competition for the Impreza.net group. All they had to do was come out and get them. :) So far, I haven't had the need to make travel plans. So far...

I believe the guy who offered the Krispy Kremes was OTG.
He still owes me from my podium last year!
I'm playing like Zolt Baumgartner this year.
