It sounded more like a shifting thing then a rev-limiter or engine problem. By the time they shift they are out of the vibration ranges (14-16k according to Varsha and the gang) so it should be caused by that. It just sounded to me like a stutter in the gearbox or something, idk what it could be but that was my take.
And RD said the gearing is different between Kimi and JPM's car, im guessing thats why Kimi's pulls harder, and JPM thinks its flat.

Could be JPM's fat bellah, too :)
And IIRC they said that vibration range was in the V-10's, but that the V8's just get progressively worse the higher you rev them.

I think it has something to do with seemless shift.
I was sort of half asleep when practice was going on so I can't recall if I heard it on all the cars. It seemed to be most evident on the Williams and McLaren, both of which run with seemless.

i thought seemless shifting was illegal. I remember either last year or the year before Honda was accused of running it. Or is it a CVT thats illegal?

CVT is illegal, and apparently Honda's tranny was deemed to be too close to a CVT... for some stupid reason.

The 14-16k is the vibration area for the 10cyl, once they push through that rev range the harmonics sort them selfs out. The v8 will get more vibration as rev's increase.
To me it sounded like the trany was not up shifting fast enough and keeping the motor on the rev limit, as it was previously said this was only in a strait line. The down shifts seamed spot on. When I get back home tonight I am going to see if any of the in car shot show the steering wheel.

See GDR's answer.
I scoured those pics this morning. :D Thanks Marshal. :)
The Toyota's exhuast has some rather large steps with huge diameter tubes entering a very short or steep coupled collector.

The engine (Kimi's)...to me at least... sounded like it was just misfiring at the upper reaches...
I've heard other engines burp the same way (not f1) that sounded identical to Kimi's. One that stands out particularly is the Maserati MC12 that Risi Comp co-ran in ALMS in 2005.
Maybe they were enriching it during practice to save it for the qualis and race.
I know, it sounds oversimplified, but its certainly a possibilty.
On a final note for this post, I, for one am not thrilled with the V8 sounds in general. They lack the overall outright aggression and shriek and intimidating, God-awful wail of the v10's...but...so be it.

I agree with BriDrive on the sound. Its too calm for me right now, I miss the sounds of speed with my surround sound up and the wailing V10s. Im sure well all get used to it, and itll eventually begin to sound more aggressive then it does now. Ill have to wait for the start of the race and sunday for the true sound output of the V8s compared to 10s. I for one, will not be exchanged my V10 gear change ring tone for a V8 anytime soon.

The CVT thing was covered in the other thread, I can't remember BAR's system being banned though. I honestly can't remember the noise, I thought it was just the whoosh of air when the cars shift gears. It truly is amazing hearing it on the track. I as well was too tired to remember to listen to the different sounds.
I don't think it was Kimi's engine, he says there was an electrical problem (which would explain the smoke coming out of the dash)
I wonder how quikcly Colin Koles will get pissy that Toro Rosso is beating them and half the field. I don't think its completely down to the engines though, but who knows.
I don't know if Bridgestone is having issues, that tire off of Massa was destroyed after a very short flat spotting.

Isn't that where the Lucky Strike stickers go when they aren't racing in a country that bans Tobacco ads. Its probably just their way to promote the brand without breaking the rules (kind of like how Mild Seven has "Team Spirit" on the Renault F1 and Gauloise has "Go!!!!!!!!!" on the Kronos Xsaras in WRC)

In the end F1 is all good now. Ferrari and MS are back on top.
I agree he was about to fall asleep with his head in his hand.
I did like how Massa somewhat dissed MS by saying he was on a pole lap until it was thwarted by a Renualt. MS's face changed ever so slightly. Massa will give Shuey some competition this year.

Love the new format. Weird how MS's engine had that chatter again right before the line on his pole lap. YIKES!!

Quali report.
Schumacher equals Senna record with pole
By Jamie O'Leary Saturday, March 11th 2006, 12:13 GMT
Michael Schumacher equalled Ayrton Senna's record of 65 pole positions by setting the fastest time in qualifying for tomorrow's Bahrain Grand Prix.
German Schumacher set a time of one minute 31.431 seconds to edge out his Ferrari teammate Felipe Massa, of Brazil, by less than 0.1 seconds.
But rivals McLaren had a terrible day as their Finnish star Kimi Raikkonen crashed in the first 15-minute session and will start from the back of the grid tomorrow.
Behind the front pair, Briton Jenson Button, in a Honda and World Champion Spaniard Fernando Alonso, in a Renault, make up row two ahead of McLaren's Juan Pablo Montoya.
German Nick Heidfeld made it a good debut for BMW Sauber as he qualified 10th on the grid.
But he almost did not make it, as he lay 16th during the second knock-out session when, with just eight seconds remaining, he set the fourth fastest time to knock his former World Champion teammate Jacques Villeneuve out of the top ten.
Canadian Villeneuve will therefore start 11th ahead of the other drivers knocked out in session two, including German Nico Rosberg and Red Bull's David Coulthard, who qualified ahead of both Toro Rosso cars.
Alonso was fastest in both of the knock-out sessions to determine the ten fastest cars to go through into the final 20-minute session.
Williams' debutant Nico Rosberg missed his chance to compete in the top-10 run-off when he spun into a tyre barrier at turn 10 during the second session.
Raikkonen will start 22nd after he almost flipped on his first lap out of the pits.
He was approaching turn nine of the Sakhir circuit on his first lap out of the pits when he suffered a right-rear suspension failure, forcing him off the road.
He drove the car back to the pits but the McLaren team were unable to repair the car in time for him to complete a lap in remainder of the session.
Therefore he was eliminated from the rest of qualifying and will start last.
Toyota's Ralf Schumacher was the highest-placed driver to be knocked out in the first session and will start 16th.

Those saying just from one qualifier that "Ferrari and MS are back!" need to get with it...
Its a qualifier... hell in their POS 2005 spec car he took pole once. This year they will be better, by far, but I think Renault and McLaren (if they can keep their fragile cars together) will be a force, as will Williams.

So far I found the new format interesting. I really liked when every car came out after the red flag, it was like i was watching the race (except Ide was at the front)

Jury is still out on the new Q format. I'll be interested to see how it all turns out on race day.
Poor Kimi! :(

Take a breather. People are just expressing their joy after an extremely depressing season for Michael Shumacher. I know this pole position will not reflect how he'll do in the actual GP but at least he's making it great for all the Schumi/Ferrari fans.
Man, after watching Raikonnen crash last night, I can just feel the doubt in Alonso.

Does anyone have a torrent or direct download of qualifying? I didn't get a chance to see it, and I wanted to see how the new qualifying system works (as well as Kimi's fault).
