I did enjoy watching alonso take the title last year though..........

thats exactly what it is. Whoever posted the thing about schumi not coming back is just bitter right now.
But Schumi and Ferrari have definitely become F1's Yankees. Its just fun to hate them.

Im interested to see the race now, I want to see what the fuel loads had to do with the qualifying. how low Ferrari and Honda are compared to Renault and McLaren. Im still somewhat dissappointed with the race fuel quali set-up, but i guess running on low fuel kinda gives the race away before it even starts, this gives you the element of surprise, so its kinda good and bad.
driggity 03-11-2006 05:03 PM
scott speed more than a second faster then his teammate. thats cool i guess.
The times listed in Ferg's post are reversed. Liuzzi was the faster of the two in the second qualifying period.

Its interesting that the 3 top qualifiers all turned their fastest laps of qualifying in the 3rd period. No one else did this. And among the other 7 Rubens was closest to beating his 2nd period time. It will be very interesting to see how much fuel the Ferrari and Hondas are running.
John__Gotti 03-11-2006 05:19 PM

I actually like the new Qualifying format. Think it offers just more to the fans and even to the drivers and teams, makes strategies that much more important. The race will tell if Ferrari is down on fuel like everyone and I believe. The person I like to see in the top 10 is Weber, great driver and just needs a car to prove himself. Hopefully the Willams-Cosworth will deliver but the race and following season will decide that. Im disappointed that Kimi's car fell apart again when he is going to catch a break. Not sure if he can actually go 2 races without something going wrong but he is in a place he has been more then once and has proved that it is not a handicap for him.

TURN UP THE VOLUME FOR THE START OF THE GRAN PRIX OF BAHRAIN

My dislike goes waaaay back... since he tangled with Damon and Jacques ages ago.

Anyone else think Massa was a little too bitter in the press room about missing the pole? I think he thought he had it.
Clegg 03-11-2006 06:46 PM

I was very happy to see Ferrari struggle last year, teaches one humility which every team could use a hit of now and then. (hell McLaren gets it every weekend I think)

Also struggle brings out the best in a team. (unless your minardi, or jordan) ;)

I really hope someone besides McLaren Renault and Ferrari are pushing hard this year.
BillT 03-11-2006 07:20 PM

From a fans perspective, I feel that the new qualifying format was a hit as we got a ton more action on the track, though, I imagine it is a bit of nightmare to administer for the FIA given all the possible 'what if' scenarios.

Its been a little while since we've seen an all red front row. Looking forward to tomorrow's race!

When I saw that post, I could've sworn Liuzzi outqualified Speed. At least I know I'm not crazy. Speed was knocked out in the second session, as did Liuzzi.

Ninja edit. :) I was thinking of Klien, who DID make it to session 3. Too many Red Bull cars!
Rivals unhappy with Ferrari's rear wing

By Jonathan Noble Saturday, March 11th 2006, 16:22 GMT

Questions have been raised about the design of the rear wing of Ferrari's 248 F1, even though it has been declared legal by the sport's governing body.

The first race of the season has led to the inevitable extra scrutiny from teams about the legality of designs elsewhere in the pitlane, and some of this focus has again shifted to the area of flexing wings.

Part of this attention on rear wings has been aimed at Ferrari, with rival teams claiming that the Italians' rear wing flexes and therefore breaks the regulations, which outlaw 'moveable aerodynamic devices'.

To check the legality of the wings, the FIA uses specific tests on the car while it is stationary. Loads are applied to the wing elements at specific areas and the wing cannot deflect above a certain amount. This is 5mm for the uppermost element of the rear wing and 2mm for the front-element.

The major bone of contention relates to the belief that the rear wings of some teams have been designed to only just pass the FIA tests and could flex elsewhere in areas that are not tested.

This would in theory make the rear wings fully compliant with the regulations as they are written, even if they are against them in spirit.

FIA technical delegates Charlie Whiting and Jo Bauer were seen inspecting the rear wing of the 248 F1 in the Ferrari garage on Saturday morning, and they subsequently gave the team the thumbs-up.

Despite the FIA insisting that there is no problem with the Ferrari rear wing, Renault's director of engineering Pat Symonds has made it clear that he is still far from happy with the situation.

When asked about his feelings on the Ferrari wing following the FIA's latest inspection, Symonds said: "I am not at all happy about it.

"It is very clear what you can or cannot do. There might be specific rules about specific parts, but there are also general rules and I know exactly what that wing does. And that is not what I would expect."

Should the issue escalate, then the FIA could still step in. F1's regulations allow the governing body to introduce further load/deflection tests on any part of the bodywork that is suspected of moving while the car is in motion.
Ferrari getting "special" treatment is nothing new I guess. :o
It's not like Ferrari needs to give a damn about it.
KAX 03-11-2006 10:32 PM

i think Symonds is trying to take the focus off of his flexing mirrors. both renault cars had wobbly mirrors. They look like they could be aerodynamic feature too, kinda look like a winglet.
Dussander 03-11-2006 11:05 PM

To answer a question that keeps popping up... when you get knocked out without setting a time, you are ordered based on car number. So, if two cars fail to complete part 1 of qualy, the person with the lowest number would be 21 while the other 22.

Well yeah, and I'm aware of that aspect.

I was just wondering why "Look Left. Look Right." Especially when Look Left is on the right side and Look Right is on the left side. It reminds me of those "How do you keep an idiot entertained" shirts where the front of the shirt says to look at the back and vice versa. :p

haha, i think thats exactly why they did that
you see one said, tells you to look left, so you look left and "oh wait, now i need to look right".

I like the "DONT WALK" on the back of their wing too. Maybe thats why McLaren did the "Keep Walking", tellng honda theyre not wanted at the top of the grid :)
Is MS running slowly to save fuel and to change from 3 stop to 2 stop?
he was running on a heavier load then originally anticipated during the 2nd stint.

but man, that was a race. even if alonso won, i think thats one of the greatest races in the last 3 or 4 years, with a great job by Raikkonen, but another "what if?" for him as well. Rosberg setting fast lap in a williams? possibly a 5 way battle for the championships.
bitterWRX 03-12-2006 08:13 AM

Congrats to Alonso! Well done!
finnRex 03-12-2006 08:23 AM

Kimi raced a fantastic race, bringing it from 21st to 3rd:). Well done Alonso, sticking it to Michael when necessary. Michael would have done the same thing. Well done for Rosberg(a Finn in blood, at least), scoring on his maiden F1 voyage.

JPM let me down. Letting Button pass him not once, but twice in the same spot. It seems as if he doesn't always try 100%. If Kimi stays, I don't think too many folks at McLaren will miss Chili Dog.

StuBeck 03-12-2006 09:02 AM

Montoya was complaining yesterday of being down on power a tad, so Button passing him in an engine with more power isn't too surprising. I liked the race, Speed doing well is encouraging, but I wonder how long it will be until people complain.
finnRex 03-12-2006 09:23 AM

One time is understandable if Montoya was down on power. But he did it a second time, in the same corner. Does Montoya not understand the concept of protecting the line? That's a racer's error, if you ask me. There's been plenty of times where the slower driver has ended up in front of a faster driver. Look at Jacques. His car is super wide. He knows how to protect the line(though I don't like him because of it).

Mika
skuttledude 03-12-2006 10:30 AM

great race and it looks like there may be 4 Mfg's that are truly competitive...been some time.

Kimi is star of the race.

Alonso vs. Ms was great.

I'm pleased with the first race and may be the beginning of a season to see.

I'd love to see Nico, Massa and Klein battle each other.
StuBeck 03-12-2006 10:58 AM

Montoya understands protecting his line, trust me, I have to believe you know this too. But at some point you have to realize "this guy is faster then me" and you shouldn't be throwing your car around teh track trying to slow them down. Look at what DC was doing (minus heidfeld, who he was pissed at) he would let them outbrake him and just continue on hoping they'll outbrake themselves and he'll be ablet o pass them on the other side.

Scott Speed set the ninth fastest time of the race, that is truly impressive.

We will see a Raikkonen / Rossberg battle in the future, mark my words. They are both amazing.
Bonzo 03-12-2006 12:31 PM

A great race. I'm glad Alonso won. MS lost the race when he chuffed up two corners just after Alonso came out from his last stop.

Kimi showed the field he will be a front runner for sure. Way to go.

Massa failed in his first showing.

The star imo is Nico Rosberg. Points and iirc fast lap of the race!!!!! He will be WDC some day. This is all after he was parked in the garage for repairs early on!!!
Clegg 03-12-2006 01:05 PM

Awesome race!!! Schumi pushed hard, Alonso pushed hard, Kimi pushed hard... EVERYONE worked for what they got. Who said F1 isnt exciting...!!!

Rosberg.... wow, we'll see him doing his own lil hip swivel thing on the podium soon enough, hes as agressive and fast as Kimi!

this is going to be a GREAT season. And Toyota seems to be the new Minardi... how sad.
KAX 03-12-2006 01:13 PM

dont forget both times button passed montoya, but was about to pit and montoya still had a real heavy load.

no, schumacher lost to 23 second gap, due to a few mistakes. Alonso did just what he needed, and schumacher made a few uncanny mistakes costing him those few seconds which he needed to stay in front of alonso.

wait... we said the same thing. Alonso pulled his lead because Schumi wasnt driving that great, and it seemed that the Renault when driven smoothly was faster. Either way Alonso opened up a 23 second lead on schumi, regardless of if it was becasue schumi was driving bad, his car wasnt working, or his pit stops were bad.

Alonso out drove him this race.

I assume you mean the Alonso pit at ~20 laps to go?

If so the Renault crew should be given some credit, too.
KAX 03-12-2006 02:27 PM

your right, the situation is the same, but its not up to Alonso really outdoing anyone, schumi just underdid it. Alonso banked off schumis misfortune which alonso had nothing to do with since he was on the other side of the track. So i wouldnt say Alonso decided it, schumacher did. Thatd be like saying Alonso deserved the win at the Nurburgring last year, he just banked off of kimis misfortune.

same goes with the renault crew, they did exactly what they needed to, nothing spectacular but exactly where they should be.

still a great job by everyone, but it all really went down to luck of the draw. its funny because alonso complains soooo much about the blue flags. Ive never seen schumacher complain that much, unless hes stuck behind them for a few laps, alonso wasnt even close to a car and was waiving his fist for a blue flag.
bitterWRX 03-12-2006 02:45 PM

Yeah great race! The podium ended up belonging to the top three in my book. But being a Honda fan, I am becoming more and more doubtful about them winning a GP this year. Schumi is back on pace (at least for this GP) and Alonso and Raikonnen are still as fast as ever. I was hoping Honda would at least get one but oh well.
John__Gotti 03-12-2006 02:47 PM

What a great start to the 2006 season. What an amazing drive by Rosberg, setting fast lap of the race and coming back from a disastrous first corner. I think we will see some great things form him in the future. All together great showing for Williams-Cosworth. Guess everyone was wrong about the Ferrari being down on fuel, only a 2 stopper and still right there at the end. Kimi had a great showing as always (well at least when the car doesn't let him down) pulling from 22nd to 3rd. Fernando still proving that he is the man to beat. I just wish Villes engine hadnt given in, would have liked to see where my fellow Canadian could have finished. Heres to yet another great year of F1 looking to be even closer then ever.

i did notice all of that. Varsha in the begining was having problems finding the right word, repeated himself many times (as austin powers would have done - "let myself introduce.....myself", that kinda stuff). David hobbs kept repeating the other two.
Verbatim: on Rosberg
Varsha - "He looks like Dartanion driving that car".
Hobbs-"He is dartanion!"
Varsha- "He looks to be the real deal"
Hobbs - "He is the real deal!"

and i think Matchett maybe got in 5 sentences all race.
pretty bad, maybe they just got rusty in the off season.

This may turn out to be quite an exciting season. Four manufacturer's with potential to win the driver's championship. It's races like this that make me wanna get up at 5 in the morning to watch.

I'm glad that Sato and Villenueve didn't screw up Kimi. Kimi's had enough problems for this race weekend.

Bemani, that was some serious driving skills. Alonso avoiding Massa was definitely an accomplishment and a half.

Student Driver 03-12-2006 03:59 PM

Great job Nico. Nice to see that Ferrari is competitive again, and that Renault/Alonso can still edge out Schumi. Kimi is amazing, but his car isn't. I hope it's dialed in by next race, or he just announces a move to a team with a car that will survive him. So, how do you think Alonso feels about McLaren now?
tdm74 03-12-2006 04:39 PM

I have not figured out why so many people on this site can't give respect to Alonso. I think he drove a very good race while making few mistakes, if any and is a good world champion.

Anyway this looks to be a great year coming up with four maybe five teams in with a shout of winning races.

If Nico did not make the mistake at the beginning, who knows he might have finished in the top 5, maybe even podium?
Chiketkd 03-12-2006 04:58 PM
