F1, Round One, 2006 Grand Prix of Bahrain part 6

KAX 03-13-2006 05:11 PM
Kimi is definately faster. JPM cruising??? He drove from last to 2nd last year. (better than what Kimi did yesterday)

Just because he maybe slower than Kimi 75% of the time, doesn't mean he's "cruising".

Thats because of races like Bahrain
im not saying he always does. I said alot of times he does, just like Bahrain. He obviously is fast, which is why i picked him for second this race. Hes just as quick as Kimi is most of the time. He told everyone his car was feeling slow compared to Kimis, so im guessing thats why he didnt do great, but it did look like he just wasnt trying.

Can't we all just get along? :D

I'm actually surprised, give JPM's history that he has gotten along with Kimi so well. Especially because he's had to learn to be the #2 driver. Thats a hard pill to swallow for a guy with JPM's personality. I love them both.
ArtGecko 03-13-2006 05:17 PM

Geesh Andy, are you starting already! ;)

I don't ever remember having this many people start the Pick6 before. Should be fun. I think I started out in the middle last year and worked my way up (then stumbled and fell back down to 4th...)

Steve (way down tied for 15th)

BriDrive 03-13-2006 05:21 PM

I laugh...loudly...whenever I read someone proclaiming, usually with unspoken authority and certification, that driver "X" is the "best".

There are so many variables that effect the outcome of any given race in F1, that to fail to recognize those variables...to remove those additional parameters and simply proclaim driver "X" is the best is just plain absurd...especially when not further clarified with necessary caveats, such as: "Well...at least in my opinion..."

There's never any real way to determine who is the best DRIVER. Not in F1. Certainly not without first developing a sophisticated and well thought out statistical modeler which smoothed out the aforementioned parameters. Remove tangibles, such as the car itself, the tires, the synergy between tire/chassis,tire manufacturer/chassis manufacturer, other intangibles such as value added team/engineer synergy...another 100 variables...and then get down to the nitty gritty, almost from an index standpoint. The driver would essentially be rated, by factors like, well, unforced errors, brain cramps, stupid maneuvers, great pass rating sub indices, size of balls, fitness and endurance, circuit knowledge and experience, psychological maturity, craftiness, efficiency, ability to communicate with and get results from engineers/mechanics, sheer will and determination, etc,etc,etc,etc.....

One may be surprised to find out that soemone like Anthony Davidson, for example, may have been/be the BEST driver in F1...and we/he might not ever get a chance to know...

BTW, my money's still on Mr. Schumacher....Well, at least in my opinion!

An excellent point, BriDrive. Bonus points for lots of big words after 5 pm on a Monday. :D

You forgot to include Alonso's other advantage in your list of parameters...

The fact that his eyebrows will always cross the finish line a half a second before the rest of him...

+1 I will give JPM credit for learning to become the #2 driver. Heck, he is probably better at that than Kimi would.

FWIW, Kimi drove last or 17th to 1st last year as well(Japan). But I guess that falls by the wayside to the JPM fans. Now if JPM could do that consistently, then I'd give him more credit.

Mika

Edited: was 17th to 1st, not 19th.
artkevin 03-13-2006 07:27 PM

I don't know of any JPM fans that speak ill of Kimi. I like Kimi. I think he is a fantastic driver. A little is left on the table as far as personality (in the media) but he's a great dirver that will be WC one day. I pull for him to have a good race. All I am saying is that if one guy has to win the race I hope its JPM. If Webber, Massa, Fisi, Nico etc wins, good for them. I like that too. Good racing is all I want and it would be cool if my favorite dirver got there first.
Over and out.

SOMEONE GIVE DAVIDSON A CONTRACT! :furious:

He is seriously a talented driver... its a shame that he hasn't been picked up as a driver yet.

Schumacher will do very well this season.

It's sad that politics play so much in F1. Folks like Sato get a seat, while Ant gets the short end of the stick.

FWIW Kevin, I hope JPM does well this year too. Seriously, I do. I want McLaren to win the constructors, and if possible the driver's as well(obviously, you know who I have a bias for).

Davidson was supposed getting a seat at Super Aguri when they build their own car for the start of the european races. But idk if thats going to happen with Yuji and Taku both racing.

A little gas on the JPM vs. Kimi fire from planetf1.com:

Juan Pablo Montoya has been exonerated of all blame for his failure to match Kimi Raikkonen's performance in Bahrain. However, it may be of little consolation as the offending engine could yet cost him ten grid slots this Sunday in Malaysia.

Although Montoya, who was P5, started the Bahrain GP well ahead of Raikkonen, who was at the back of the grid owing to his qualifying shunt, he finished two places behind his team-mate after what appeared to be a lacklustre performance from the Colombian.

Montoya, though, blamed his McLaren MP4-21.

"I have not really been totally comfortable with the set up of my car all weekend, which was clear during all the practice sessions," he said.

"Obviously I am a little disappointed finishing in fifth as I know that the car could do so much more, but it just wasn't working for me this weekend."

And it has now emerged that he was right to do so as he suffered from engine mapping issues throughout the weekend, which meant his engine was down in power compared to Raikkonen's.

"I think we had some issues over the weekend with Montoya's engine," McLaren MD Martin Whitmarsh told Autosport.

"We have a number of different modes of operation with the engine. We have economy, super economy and full mode and certainly in the lesser modes of control there was something in the engine that we were trying to track down all weekend that gave him a slight element of disadvantage.

"It's the same engine this weekend but we have got a bit more time to study it now. We cannot change the mechanics of the engine but we are allowed to change the software and the mapping.

"With a bit of detailed analysis maybe we can find something there to give him more confidence in the operating regimes of the engine."

But if the team doesn't, it could mean an engine change and another race weekend where Montoya's on the back foot.

Hmm...

Questionable styling, failed electronics, faulty suspension, not really designed for the driver, "stiff upper-lip" response from management. Well, it sure sounds like a British car. I guess the "high performance" division of Rover found an new home over the winter. At least in this car the steering wheel comes off for a reason...
