McLaren's Juan Pablo Montoya describes a lap of Bahrain's Sakhir circuit

"We begin on the long start-finish straight, which is just over one kilometre and were we reach the highest speeds on the circuit, up to 320 km/h in seventh gear before braking hard for the slow tight right of turn one dropping down to first gear and 80km/h. A short burst of power takes you to the left hander of turn two, which is taken at 120km/h in second gear, keeping on the power through the turn."

"The slight right of turn three, taken at 190km/h sees speeds gradually increasing as you go up to third gear. This then flicks you onto the second and shortest of the four straights. We power along here in sixth gear before dropping down to second gear and 105km/h for the tight right of turn four."

"The sweeping left-right-left of turns five, six and seven follow; this is very quick sequence reaching 200km/h at turn six and sees us pull 3.2G the highest of the circuit."

"We then pick up speed on the exit for the short run down to the hairpin of turn eight which is taken in second gear at 90km/h. Another quick burst takes you to the two left handers of nine and ten, which will start off quite fast and then see us slow to second gear and 80km/h for ten."

"This then swings you round onto the third main straight that runs parallel to the start-finish straight. This sees another chance to really pick up speed and we reach 300km/h before braking for the long left double-apex of eleven. It is important to maintain our speed through here, as it leads onto another long and fast sweeping section of the track."

"The open curving right of twelve, which sees speeds of around 215km/h in fourth, is followed by a sharper right turn, taken in third at 170km/h, this then flicks you onto the back straight."

"Powering up through the gears you reach 320km/h before breaking hard into second gear, 95km/h for the final right hander, which takes you back onto the long start-finish straight to start another lap."

Bahrain Tech File

Braking: Sakhir is a major challenge for the cars' braking systems. Along with Montreal, this is the most demanding circuit of the year in terms of brake wear. The drivers slow from over 300 kph to first or second gear on three occasions. Furthermore, between turns 4 and 13, the corners follow each other in quick succession, which means the brakes never really have time to cool down. This can cause oxidisation of the brakes, and leads us to use the largest brake ducts of the year at this circuit.

Handling: The car must be well balanced to minimise oversteer exiting the slow corners, and to provide good braking stability, in particular for turns 10 and 13 where the drivers must begin turning in to the corner while still braking. This makes it important to find the best set-up compromise between a stable balance in the quick corners, and supple suspension in the slower sections to generate sufficient mechanical grip. To achieve this, we use bump rubbers which the car sits on' at high speed when the aero loadings are highest, and which it rises from in slower speed sections, allowing the suspension to function fully and generate mechanical grip.

Tyres: Owing to the presence of sand on the track surface, the grip level of the circuit is always relatively low. This means the drivers must stick to the racing line as much as possible to keep the tyres clean. The circuit is not particularly demanding for the tyres in overall terms, but we pay close attention to the rear tyres, which do a lot of work under acceleration out of the slow corners.

The Bahraini Grand Prix is a very demanding race for the engines. They spend 70% of the lap at full throttle, which puts the circuit among the top 5 of the year.

In the high temperatures, the engines experience acoustic offset'. This means that as the temperature rises, the revs at which the engine develops its maximum power increase by approx. 300 rpm for every 10C. Previously, this was compensated in part by the use of variable intake trumpets. These are no longer allowed in 2006, which means the teams must forecast more accurately the ambient temperatures in order to fit the most appropriate length of trumpets. Variable trumpets previously allowed the teams to adapt to a wider range of temperatures, but fixed trumpets must be tuned more precisely to the prevailing conditions in order to generate maximum performance.

The primary risk for the engine remains the possible ingestion of sand, which would have be catastrophic for the pistons, piston rings or valves. The team therefore pays particular attention to air filters. Although certain materials may cost performance, they remain the most effective way of protecting the engine.

Temperatures are expected to be extremely high, which means that a successful car will be one which is able to provide sufficient cooling to the engine. Although the V8 is less demanding than the V10 in this area, the lower power also means that the percentage of the lap spent at full throttle has increased. As always, the optimum cooling level will provide the best possible compromise between cooling capacity and the cost of extra cooling in terms of aerodynamic performance.
Renault set out to show that the championships can be done on a budget, given the right spend on the right people, and the right resources to deliver - which they did very tidily in 2005; now they are up against it to defend both titles in 2006 against tough, well-funded competition.

Speculation last winter that Fernando Alonso's decision to join McLaren in 2007 could derail his charge to a second world title already appears to have been wide of the mark - with both driver and team appearing to fire on all cylinders on the eve of the campaign. Alonso has never been anything less than 100 percent committed on the race track and the confidence that grew in him last year, allied to the early promise shown by the R26, have marked him out as the pre-season favourite. Alonso will be a hard man to beat in 2006.

Giancarlo Fisichella had a miserable time in 2005 as a spate of mechanical problems early in the season left him playing the support role to teammate Fernando Alonso's world title charge. It must have been galling for the Italian, who finally got his hands on a championship-winning car but was unable to deliver the kind of results that many believe he is capable of. Heading into 2006, things are very different, and Fisichella knows that this will be his best (and maybe last) chance at gunning for the crown. Alonso is leaving the team at the end of the year, the R26 is more suited to Fisichella's driving style, and the team no longer need to be so protective of one of their men after their success of 2005.
Always a class act, be careful not to write off McLaren. They are close to the pace and able to develop quickly. They have a pair of drivers who can make a difference and should win races: moreover, should the reliability issues be truly resolved, they cannot be written off as championship contenders.

Having seen his world title challenge derailed by engine problems in 2005, Kimi Raikkonen is under no illusions that this season is make-or-break in terms of his relationship with McLaren. Despite having proved to be one of (if not the) fastest drivers in F1 for several seasons, Raikkonen's cars have all-too-often let him down, and he has shown this winter that he is no longer afraid to speak his mind about the situation. Should McLaren and Mercedes have overcome their winter issues, then Raikkonen will be fighting for the title; if not, then expect the fireworks to fly - both on and off the track.

Juan Pablo Montoya is only too aware that Raikkonen's relationship with the team is on the brink, and he has been doing everything in his power to appear the 'blue-eyed boy' over the winter. The Colombian has regularly been to the factory to work on the team's simulator, and he has been pushing himself harder than ever to eek out performance from his car that will allow him to overcome his teammate. Montoya absolutely does not want to be playing the support role to Raikkonen again and desperately wants those positions reversed; so expect no quarter given between the teammates once the action begins.

Formula One's elder-statesman is not ready to give up just yet, but it could be a different story at the end of the year if Ferrari are not able to deliver a car capable of fighting for the world championship. The disappointment of 2005 has served to fire up Schumacher's motivation, and he has been pushing the team like crazy to ensure he does not have to endure the nightmare he suffered last year. Whether his efforts will pay off is uncertain, and much depends on the job that Bridgestone can do, but one thing is clear: Schumacher is far from finished yet as a major force in F1. No one should write him off.

Felipe Massa has everything to prove this year. He has been handed a golden opportunity to prove he is a better driver than his critics suggest, and it will be up to the Brazilian to prove that he is not as wild as he has often shown to be. It will certainly not be easy going up against Michael Schumacher in the same team, but then again no one is expecting the Brazilian to outperform the number one star. However, there will be a certain amount of pressure on Massa to deliver results as quickly as possible. He only has a one-year deal and, with Valentino Rossi sniffing around, Massa cannot afford to get it wrong.
It may take a while to get to grips with the subtleties of the Bridgestone tyres over race distances, but the car is quick in qualifying trim. There should be some solid qualifying sessions early, but good finishes, perhaps a win, ought to come later in the year on the back of strong, sustained development.

Ralf Schumacher may have a firm long-term contract with Toyota in his pocket, but that does not mean he can afford to sit back and let results come to him this year. Despite outscoring teammate Jarno Trulli in 2005, Schumacher was pretty comprehensively outperformed for much of the year and the team management make no secret of the fact they want the German to up his game - especially in qualifying. Schumacher has always shone when he has a well-sorted car beneath him, and early indications are the TF106 is that - although no-one yet knows just how quick it is.

Jarno Trulli may earn much less than teammate Ralf Schumacher and may not have the security of a long-term deal with Toyota, but he was undoubtedly the star of the outfit last year. Expect more of the same from the Italian in 2006, as he hopes the team can make the final step they need to earn that maiden victory. Expect Trulli to be brilliant in qualifying again and, if the team can deliver him a more consistent car for the races, then there is no reason to believe he cannot be strong on Sunday afternoons too. He also needs a bit more luck on his side, having seen several good results go down the pan last year through no fault of his own.
Losing manufacturer backing has left Williams compelled to make a number of decisions based on budget that, otherwise, might have been different - but they have been in this spot before, so it comes as no surprise that they have driven some very hard bargains and will still be aiming to deliver a few surprises in the year ahead. Mark Webber readily admits that both he and Williams under-performed in 2005 and need to do much better this time out. The Australian arrived at the team on a wave of high expectation and all the talk was of him finally being able to net his maiden Grand Prix win. Things did not work out like that, and instead a solitary podium in Monaco was the highlight of a disappointing campaign. Webber's relationship with the team was also far from perfect in 2005, but a mid-season 'mutual bollocking' session with management at Grove cleared the air and has allowed them to renew their efforts to turn the situation around. Now is the time for Webber to deliver.

The Rosberg name is back in a Williams, and Nico has every chance of being as quick as his title-winning father. Rosberg arrives in Formula One after an impressive GP2 campaign last season, but it was his dedication and application in testing for Williams that eventually convinced the team to sign him. He is the highest-ranking scorer of all time in an aptitude test all Williams drivers take, and his technical feedback and knowledge, allied to speed on the track, should allow this rookie to shine at time during 2006. Expectations that the new rules will reward smooth, consistent driving perhaps gives Button a chance to move forward; the car has been very quick in testing despite the emphasis on reliability, so a competitive season is in prospect. From the outset, they have the potential to race at the front, so there should be every opportunity of that taking that elusive first win.

Rubens Barrichello has finally escaped from the shadow of Michael Schumacher and looks set to have joined Honda Racing at exactly the right moment. The new RA106 appears to be a front-runner in terms of pace, and it certainly has the reliability needed. Some say that Honda will start the season as the team to beat, and few believe Barrichello will give anything away to teammate Jenson Button. 2006 provides a real opportunity for Barrichello to prove that he has what it takes to mount a serious world title challenge - and he knows he cannot afford to simply be a number two driver, again, this year.

Jenson Button is desperate to end his Formula One victory drought - if only to stop the endless questions he gets asked about when that first win is going to come. For the first time since his debut season in 2000, Button is in a truly competitive car with a truly competitive teammate, and it is very much a make-or-break season for the Briton to prove he can be a winner, and not just a front-runner. After the contractual wrangles that have marred previous seasons, Button should at least be able to keep his focus on the racing this year and seems well fired up by the competitive car that Honda have delivered.
Provided their reliability issues have been resolved, the team should run at the front of the midfield and keep the leading teams honest. David Coulthard proved to be one of the surprises of 2005 when he shone in Red Bull Racing's first year in Formula One, but he is going to face a tough time matching his achievements this time out. Although there is no doubt that the Scotsman is as strong as ever, it has not been an easy pre-season build-up for the new RB2. Major cooling problems have derailed the team's early efforts, and left Red Bull Racing well behind on their programme and struggling with reliability. It may be a tough start to the year, then, but Coulthard is exactly the kind of man to help solve those problems.

Christian Klien faced an uncertain time in Formula One last year, with Red Bull Racing making it clear to him that he would be sharing the team's second car with Vitantonio Liuzzi. In the end he impressed enough to hold onto the seat for most of the year, and now he heads into his third season safe in the knowledge that the seat is his for the full campaign. The young Austrian made big progress last year, sometimes putting teammate David Coulthard in the shade, and he can be expected to go even better this year. He will face the same difficulties as Coulthard with the RB2 in the early part of the year, but he is still young enough not to lose heart with the situation.
With the team aiming to be able to win races in three years, there are no false expectations for the year ahead: aiming to be steady midfield performers, picking up points when they are able, BMW-Sauber should have a solid building year as they work on being ready to win in 2008.

It is hard to imagine that just two years ago Nick Heidfeld was fighting to keep his Formula One career alive. In the end, he opted for a year with Jordan to try and rebuild his career and the gamble certainly appears to have paid off. The German seized his opportunity well with Williams last year, often outclassing teammate Mark Webber, and he has now followed BMW to their new team. No-one is expecting the BMW-Sauber outfit to be in the hunt for victories, but the F1.06 looks solid and Heidfeld can be expected to be delivering results when they are on offer.

Jacques Villeneuve needs a good season in 2006 if he is to keep his Formula One career going beyond the end of the year. An indifferent start to last season did nothing to silence his doubters, and certainly led BMW to stall on confirming his contract for this year ahead. The former world champion knows that he has got a point to prove from now on, but a good handling F1.06, plus the improved budget brought to Sauber by BMW, have lifted his spirits considerably. He has put in some strong times in testing and he will be hoping to recapture some of the form that made him such an exciting driver in the 1990s.
Formula One's Mr. Consistency is going to face a hard time this year if he is going to improve on his great 2005 campaign. His podium finish in Indianapolis (albeit thanks to freak circumstances) and the record of 18 finishes carved him out a good reputation - but in F1 you are only as good as your last race. Midland are unlikely to make a big step forward in performance this year and, in Christijan Albers, Monteiro will find a more political adversary than Narain Karthikeyan - and that could prove crucial in the fight to make an impact.

After being unable to convince Red Bull Racing's chiefs that he was a better bet for their team than Christian Klien, Liuzzi has been handed a golden chance to prove what he can do in the company's new junior team. Although Scuderia Toro Rosso are unlikely to be allowed to fight near the front of the field, because of the V10-equivalency rules, Liuzzi should at least be allowed plenty of freedom to both enjoy himself and develop as a driver without too much pressure. WDC Points: 40

2005 ranking: 24

After a disastrous 2005 campaign that resulted in him being dropped by BAR, Takuma Sato has had the luxury of Honda helping him stay in Formula One through their support of Aguri Suzuki's new outfit. However, it may not be a dream ticket for the aggressive Japanese driver. There has been very little lead time to get the operation up to speed and, with the team starting the season with an updated 2002 Arrows, there is little chance of them being anything but at the back of the grid. It will be interesting to see if Sato can keep his frustrations in check if that is the case, or whether there are going to be quite a lot of bodywork repairs coming up for the team.

23 Yuji Ide
Age: 31

Wins: -
Pole Positions: -
WDC Points: -
WDC Titles: -
2005 ranking: -

Yuji Ide is pretty much an unknown figure in Formula One circles, but the Japanese arrives in the sport with some impressive results from Formula Nippon under his belt. Ide will face the same struggles as Sato early on in the year in trying to make an old 2002 car competitive, but with the team unlikely to have two new cars until the middle of the campaign, he is going to face a longer spell at the back of the field than his teammate. Just how he fares is anyone's guess, but the team could have some late nights fixing cars if recent comments that he wants to copy Sato's aggressive style are anything to go by.
I'm curious, the BMW - Sauber team is dropping the Sauber in the future right? Or will BMW maintain the Sauber name?
Ferg 03-06-2006 12:04 PM

Every indication so far from BMW is that they want to keep the Sauber name, at least for the near future. :)

Red Bull and STR will not look the same come this weekend. They are releasing their new livery for the GP. STR is supposed to be wild looking from all sources.
McLaren might sign a deal with Emirates to take up those huge red spaces on the MP4-21. Supposedly it is a 1 year deal until Vodafone comes in.

I have never been a prouder father.

My girlfriend will LOVE to hear that F1 starts this weekend!

Glad to see Scott Speed is a driver now. Also good to see Takuma Sato didn't completely get the boot.

Here's a question...
Super Aguri did little to no preseason testing, however Yuji Ide is a rookie this season.

Did Yuji Ide do enough testing mileage to earn a Superlicense? If he doesn't have a Superlicense then how can he participate in Bahrain?
JoD 03-06-2006 04:44 PM

I'm hoping for Kimi all the way!! (Gee, there's a shock!)

I have to pull for him at McLaren and the championship this year since everyone and their mother seems to be saying that he's heading to that evil red team next year... :furious:

Here's my pick 6 (8)..

K.Raikkonen
F.Alonso

J.Button
Any reason for putting Button up top?
'Cause I think he'll win... ;)

I think Honda will have a really competitive package this season. Although winter testing doesn't tell the whole story, Honda's been consistently fast during the off-season. I dunno how Anthony Davidson did this last week, but he demolished Kimi's fastest lap record at Valencia by nearly 0.8s. Also, Button's smooth. He's mentioned that driving with the new V8s will be less forgiving than the V10s because the V8s have less power and drivers won't be able to power out of mistakes. I think the new engines will really suit Button's driving style.

Why put Button on top in this particular race?...I dunno. He's gotta win sooner or later, right?
bemani 03-06-2006 09:26 PM

Hopefully Jenson can finally get his first win this year, and that MS can at least get that one last pole.
Good luck to new comers Nico Rosberg and Scott Speed! As for the new Japanese guy, who's that? ;)

JPM
MS

KR
JB

finnRex 03-07-2006 09:27 AM

It's a new season, so here are my pick 6 choices...

1. Kimi(a Finn can dream, can't he?)
2. Alonso(good fight with Kimi throughout the race)
3. Woobens(snubs Ferrari with a "I told you so" look)
4. JPM(bad luck puts him here)
5. MS(right place at the right time)
6. Fisi(still wants attention)
7. Button(snappy nappy dugout)
8. Nico(1st points on maiden voyage)

NYEJ25 03-07-2006 10:26 AM

My picks and wishful thinking:

1. Trulli - Even though Toyota was off of the pace in preseason testing, they have a ton of miles on the car and a good aero package for Bahrain. Trulli does qualify well and I think this may be Toyota's year. (Again, alot of wishful thinking)

2. Button- Again, I think that Honda has been building to this season and it will be a break out year for Button and Honda as a team. I expect to see them fighting for a constructor championship this year

3. Alonso- As much as I dislike him and his manager, you can't argue with his results, I expect another strong year from him and for him to be towards the top of the standings at the end of the season.

4. M. Schumacher- I think the team finaly got its act together and the fact that tire changes are back this year will take away any advantage that Mich. had over the Bridgestone cars last year. MS should have a good year, but I think it will be a hard year on him.

5. Speed -( Yeah Right!!!) This is purely wishful thinking on my part. It would be great to see an American do well in his first F1 race ever. Back to reality, I do expect Speed to strugle this year as he learns the ropes.

6. JPM - The only reason he is this low and Kimi is not in the points is because I think that the team will have major engine trouble at the begining this season that will end up costing Kimi another championship. I think Kimi will DNF this race and JPM will struggle as well, but still finish in the points.

7. Rubins- More wishful thinking. Again, Honda will have a good car this year. This is his chance to show the world that it was not his old team and team mate that got him 9 GP wins, but his own talent. This year will be very telling as to the kind of driver he really is.

8. Fisi- Because I like him and would love to see him beat Alonso in points this year. I hope he does well and stays consistant, unlike last season.

Again, these are just my opinion based mostly on hope, and with some facts to back it up. I can't wait until Sunday!!!

Some teams have gone ahead and released their pre-Bahrain press statements...

Ferrari, both RedBull teams, Renault, and Midland still haven't.

Here are the driver quotes, which after your read through them are about as exciting as watching epoxy set.
McLaren-Mercedes

Kimi Raikkonen: "It is great to be back racing in Bahrain this weekend. It has been a busy winter season for us, with hard work taking place in every part of the team. Since my first outing in the MP4-21 at Barcelona on Thursday 26th January I have covered more than 3200 km with the new car. The car has felt good on track and is quick, which can be seen from the improvements in lap times of more than 3 seconds. Of course I want to carry on from our performance last year and be challenging for race wins, however we will only see where we are in Bahrain after qualifying. It is also going to be interesting this weekend to go back to tyre changes in the pit stops, we had to adapt driving styles slightly for last year as we didn't have tyre changes, so it may mean people are more aggressive as it is not so important to look after your tyres. Bahrain is a good track, it always seems to have exciting races and I hope there will be another one this year to start the 2006 season."

Juan Pablo Montoya: "The start of the 2006 season will be even more exciting than the previous years with all the changes of the technical and sporting regulations. It is a bit different for me this year as I now know the team and the car really well from the very start of the season. We have completed some intensive work on the test track. Since starting my test programme with the MP4-21 on 24 January I have been at the wheel for 12 days and covered more than 3500 km. In addition to this I have spent 8 days at the McLaren Technology Centre with the engineers, working on debriefs, seat-fitting and in the simulation department and I feel well prepared for the long season ahead. But as always there is a lot of work still to be done. The Bahrain track hasn't been my most successful venue to date, and starting there will be slightly tougher for me, as I didn't race there last season. However I qualified well in 2004 and I always enjoy driving on tracks designed by Hermann Tilke. It has a good mix of corners, turn 12 is pretty cool and quite like Eau Rouge, so you are pushing it hard through the corner as it sweeps you right up the hill. The track is quite tough on the brakes though, as there are a number of long straights and slow corners, and little chance for them to cool. However it is not as bad as Canada, but we do need to make sure we manage this through the race."

Toyota

Ralf Schumacher: "It's always nice to return to racing after the long winter break. Of course we will have to wait and see how the first couple of races go before we can truly compare our position to the others. But we hope to take some points in the first few races and take it from there. Our whole winter test programme has been targeting reliability and that is what we will need early in the season. We've been working with the TF106 since November so we've had plenty of time to put mileage on all the mechanical parts. The tests have gone well and both the car and the new V8 engine have run reliably so we should be confident heading to Sakhir, which is a great modern facility. Bahrain will be hot but at this time of year it should not be exceptional. Either way, all the teams have so much experience that the heat shouldn't make any difference from a technical point of view. So let's hope it's nice and warm. After a winter in Europe, that would be very welcome..."

Jarno Trulli: "I've only had good results when I've raced in Bahrain, particularly last year when I made the podium in second place. I had never been to the area before the race arrived on the calendar but Bahrain is incredible as an F1 venue. The facilities are state-of-the-art, much like Malaysia and China, and it has treated me well so far! It would be wonderful to achieve something similar again, so that is why everyone at Toyota has worked all winter to be as prepared as possible for this first Grand Prix of the year. The new season brings new challenges in every area. There are lots of new factors - the V8 engine, our Bridgestone tyres and of course the new qualifying system where cars will be eliminated during the session. That will be a bit more complicated than last year but it still boils down to producing a quick lap just when it matters. I'm confident that the TF106 can deliver strong results, but as ever we will only find out when we get on track with everyone this weekend."

Williams Cosworth

Mark Webber: "Usually the first race of the season is at home in Australia, so the start of this year's Championship has a very different feel about it for me, and it's certainly a much quieter start than I'm used to! After all the pre-season testing and guessing games, I don't think there'll be a driver on the grid who's not looking forward to getting down to what it's all about, and that's pitching yourself against everyone else. Race weekends are absolutely brilliant, we have our practice sessions, qualifying and the race and there can be no excuses at the end of it. You just have to get the maximum result possible for your team and yourself. The first race always has an extra buzz because it delivers the answers to those unresolved questions from pre-season testing. I'm looking forward to seeing where we're at and to see what the first part of the season may bring for Williams. Bahrain can't come quick enough!"

Nico Rosberg: "After so much testing, its going be good to finally race and it will be very interesting to see where we are compared with the others teams. I'm very confident, though, as the recent tests have been going well for me and I feel very much at home in the car. I am looking forward to my first Formula One race, especially because it's on a track that I really enjoy and one that I have had great success at having won the GP2 Championship there last year."

Honda

Rubens Barrichello: "It's really exciting for me to be racing for the very first time as a Honda Racing F1 Team driver. Since I have joined the team at the start of the year, it has been a very intense period of working hard on the test track and with the engineers. We have covered an incredible amount of laps and have been able to establish good reliability as well as improve the pace of the car. For me, our most important test was in Bahrain last month where we could work on the set-up of the car in the hot weather we will face this weekend and also complete a lot of laps, which really helped my physical conditioning. I feel very much at home with the team now and I can't wait for the first race of the new season, where I believe we will be very competitive."

Jenson Button: "Our pre-season testing programme has been extremely positive. The RA106 was strong and reliable from the start which has enabled us to complete plenty of mileage and given me the confidence to push the development from an early stage. I tried to complete as much testing as possible over the winter, which is reflected by the amount of kilometres I have driven. I have also been training hard and feel mentally and physically stronger than ever before. The Bahrain International Circuit is a great track and I enjoy racing here. There are several overtaking opportunities which always makes things exciting and the fast flowing sections are great. Testing in Bahrain in February was hugely beneficial for us and we are the only Michelin team to have tested the tyres and our car in the hot conditions prior to the race. I think that we have a really competitive package, and although this is the first time we will really see where we are compared to the other teams, I hope to be challenging for wins. I can't wait for the racing to begin this weekend."

BMW-Sauber

Nick Heidfeld: "Bahrain is hosting the curtain-raiser for the first time. That's something very special, and I think it will be reflected in the atmosphere of the event. They say ticket sales are high. What's special about the circuit is quite simply that it's in the desert. It means the track surface is always very sandy and dirty at the start, which results in very little grip. Lap times only improve gradually. Record temperatures such as the 42 Celsius we had last year are probably not on the cards for 2006, so the race won't be quite such a strain. The Bahrain circuit is an average to high-speed track. It demands high aerodynamic efficiency and a good engine for the long straight. We did a lot of testing over the winter and I feel pretty confident. I'm desperately looking forward to my first race after a long gap and I can't wait to see what the competition is like. It's hard to make any predictions, but my guess is that Renault and Honda will be in the lead to start with, possibly followed by McLaren and Ferrari, and then a group of closely bunched teams. We will probably be in with that group."

Jacques Villeneuve: "Bahrain is one of the hottest races of the year, and on top of that the first race is always the hardest one physically. So for sure it will be tough for the drivers and for the cars. Some teams have been testing on the Bahrain track recently, which means that they will have a big advantage. The track itself is fun and not too physical muscularly. We will cope with the heat, we are ready for that. We have done a lot of winter testing, much more than one year ago, which is very positive. However, it's time to start. I'm really looking forward to the first race, because this is what it's all about."

Super Aguri Honda

Takuma Sato:"I am very excited to be going to Bahrain with a brand new team. They have done a great job to ensure that we made it to the first race - and that is a fantastic achievement. We shook down the car with our 2006 aero package last week and although we did not get to do much running due to bad weather, the car worked well immediately. It will feel very different starting the season in Bahrain. The circuit in Sakhir provides an exciting race, but it is demanding on the car, especially on the brakes due to the number of low-speed corners and the heat. We know that it will be a difficult start for what will be a very challenging year, but we are very much looking forward to it."

Yuji Ide: "I have been studying race simulations to learn the Bahrain circuit and the braking for the first corner looks challenging! I have never visited Bahrain, so I am excited to go. I am expecting tough conditions as it is my first F1 race but also because of the hot weather. I have driven in the heat at Sepang in Malaysia for Formula Nippon, but I know that dry heat will be very different. Whenever I race in hot conditions I am very careful to monitor my liquid intake and take care of what I am drinking for my re-hydration. The anticipation of my first Formula One race is nearly over and I am very excited about it."
I have a question for those picking Rubens ahead of Button - do you really think he'll be faster than JB? I've always liked RB, but think JB will routinely beat him this year as I feel that alot of RB's past success was related to him being on Ferrari. I think that the JB/RB battle will be an interesting one to watch this year.

I think Rubens is faster than JB. He was tremendous when he was with Stewart Grand Prix and was stifled when he moved to Ferrari. I dont think he is, or ever was, quicker than Schumacher, but I do think that hell be faster than Jenson. I also feel that Honda will allow him to be as quick as he can be; they want to win and dont care if its with Rubens or Jenson.

Next weeks race is going to drive me crazy. I am going to be out of town on buisness and the hotel doesn't have Speed. I won't be able to watch the race until 4 days later so that means I have to go on media silence until I get back!
yall gonna wake up at 6am on saturday and sunday to watch the qualifying and the race live?

call me crazy... but i am!
No way, I got my DVR setup already. I will watch it on Sunday morning when I wake up.

problem is i have a soccer game mid day, so the only time to watch it is live at 6am (which i would do anyways and just go back to sleep after). I hate having to worry if someone is going to ruin the results for me.
Oh yeah, there's no other way to start off the season.

I really do wish the first race was at Albert Park though...on the West Coast it made for a perfect start time for a season kick-off party.

3:00am...not so much! :o
hell, id love a 3am start time. I'm a college student, i'm still up at 3am every night!

Of course I may decide to go back to my old trick of sneaking out to the living room to watch the race live, sneak back to bed, then watch the race later with the wife so I can "wow" her with my almost precognitive ability to call the race.

Wife, "I think Kimi has this one locked up."

Me, "Five bucks says his left front tire lets go on the final lap..."

I remember doing the college 3 am races when they were in Asia. I always made it til about lap 30 and then the next thing I knew there was 3 laps to go and I had a bowl of melted icecream in my hand.

:( :( :( dont remind me

you guys have to watch it in the morning, theres no other way to do it. Put on the TV and log onto Formula1.com to get all the lap times and everything, best thing in the world.

picks:

K. Raikkonen
JP. Montoya - I think hes learned from mistakes last year and needs to keep his ride, and if Kimi can win it, Montoya will be right behind him.
F. Alonso
J. Button
R. Barrichelo
M. Schumacher

Yea, Formula1.com is awesome, its like not having commercials and being able to see the sector times is even better, you gotta watch it live though.
