Finally in, 06 diffuser part 1

STi-MAN 08-10-2005 08:42 PM

Finally in, 06 diffuser
should have had this thing last week but due to post office problems i had to wait another week. well visually it looks like its not gonna fit, im going to be up loading pictures very shortly and ill try and see if theres a way to put it on. As i guessed 3 of the mounting points are not present on the 05's but i'll see what i can do later tonite. by the way got it from japanparts.com they are awesome on customer service and speed.

Pics!!!
FWD WRX 08-10-2005 08:47 PM

yes please
STi-MAN 08-10-2005 09:19 PM

theres some pictures rite there the 4th picture from the top, u can see what mounting points im talking about. to my knowledge rite now there are no points to mount into with those points, other points are taken care of with the bracket that comes with the diffuser
Subie Gal 08-10-2005 09:24 PM

that's what a drill is for
QwikRex 08-10-2005 09:30 PM

I was about to order that diffuser a couple of weeks ago from japanparts.com. Then I saw those three bolt holes on the diffuser and checked under my car. I don't see any other way of mounting without drilling holes into the spare tire well.
TampaSTI 08-10-2005 09:32 PM

I'd like to see how you're going to do it

STi-MAN 08-10-2005 09:33 PM

there is 1 bracket that attaches to the rear bumper but yea like i said we'll see.
VSGTS14 08-10-2005 09:34 PM

they are sweet, but they are definately going to get in the way of aftermarket exhausts....
so those 06 people might have issues swapping big canister exhausts.
cutting it will just make it stupid looking.
snwman 08-10-2005 09:35 PM

people might have to start getting and exhaust that fits up in there more like stock.
Kostamojen 08-10-2005 09:36 PM

Ya, might have to drill now that I see this...

I REALLY want to put this on my GC!
STi-MAN 08-10-2005 09:37 PM

it will be a good guinea pig test, i have a hks carbon ti so well see if it clears fo the 06 guys too.
Audipwr1 08-10-2005 09:38 PM

what exactly do you hope this to do at street speed? or primarily a looks thing?
STi-MAN 08-10-2005 09:40 PM

primary looks but im sure subaru put it there for a reason. plus i like to go racing alot.
Sokudo 08-10-2005 09:49 PM

oh man...i want it for my 02...

i would think so...i got the oem rear lip too and i don't want to loose those... :(
STi-MAN 08-10-2005 11:31 PM

ok, tried to fit the diffuser but even the bracket does not have a mounting point so the 06 diffuser needs fabbing for fitment.
intence 08-10-2005 11:32 PM
i would think so...i got the oem rear lip too and i don't want to loose those... :(
ill buy it! if u ever sell it.
slowscooby 08-11-2005 01:35 AM

I am very interested in this, let us know how ya get it in there for sure. Would make for a good write up with pics, i'm sure a lot of people are wondering how to do this.
veightkiller 08-11-2005 02:47 AM

i wonder if it's going to fit on a wagon????
STi-MAN 08-11-2005 02:53 AM

it will fit prob anything as long as u drill into your trunk. there are no mounting points that car compatible with the 05 for the diffuser, it would be nice to see what the 06 looks like from underneath with out the diffuser.
mokwai 08-11-2005 03:03 AM

Got mine today also. :D . Will try to get some pictures once i put it on. hang in there!
they are sweet, but they are definately going to get in the way of aftermarket exhausts....

it all depends on the size of the can and if it is straight or angled. my exhaust can diameter is smaller than the stock sti muffler so it should work out fine

i too just got the diffuser from japan parts. ~100 shipped

the diffuser, is to help straighten airflow leaving the underside of the car. apparently during high speeds, airflow is critical. so who knows.. i'll post pics up as soon as i intall it, to show how it would look like with a hks carbon ti exhaust
Undepelo 08-11-2005 11:25 AM

An idea if you don't want to drill into the car is to use an aluminum sheet and have that attached at another location then have the diffuser screwed onto the plate. ??
slowscooby 08-11-2005 11:30 AM
An idea if you don't want to drill into the car is to use an aluminum sheet and have that attached at another location then have the diffuser screwed onto the plate. ??
Yeah thats what it looks like they use on the 06's in that photo. It appears to be an extra sheet of metal formed under the spare tire well. Or invest is a crapload of heavy duty zip-ties and industrial double-sided tape :D
jnorth85 08-11-2005 11:33 AM

i wonder if this peice will actually improve the under car airflow?
i wish someone would show test results or perform a test so we can see if there is actually a bennifit.
tool1128 08-11-2005 11:41 AM

$100 shipped! :)
it just looks so small and cheesy in the pic on the car?? maybe I'm just delirious?
I want something that will fit the entire rear underside of the car

well from what ive read, yes, it does improve airflow and they are a slew of japanese companies making diffusers for subarus...

There is absolutely no way Subaru would put that on the car if it didn't work.
drees 08-11-2005 11:57 AM

It'd be interesting to read these 2 Autospeed articles and see if they have anything to say about rear diffusers on street cars:

Modifying Under-Car Airflow Part 1
Modifying Under-Car Airflow Part 2

Anyone have an Autospeed subscription? I'm tempted to get the first 345 issues for $15.45 just to read these two articles.
STi-MAN 08-11-2005 12:00 PM

ofcourse a rear diffuser is gonna help, people make a big deal out of the front underpanel to help smooth out the airflow, the same should go with the rear.
Undepelo 08-11-2005 12:12 PM

Something like this?

STR8OUT 08-11-2005 12:19 PM

Dont go drilling ANYTHING until you make sure your not going to pierce the gas tank.
MU5A5HI 08-11-2005 12:20 PM

Doubt the rear diffuser is going to be much good unless you have the other underbody panels too.
TheMadScientist 08-11-2005 12:24 PM
Dont go drilling ANYTHING until you make sure your not going to pierce the gas tank.
Tha gas tank sits in front of the rear diff. You should not have any problems drilling into the spare tire well. As long as the spare is not in the trunk.

TMS
kat398 08-11-2005 12:25 PM

Nice.. waiting for pics
MPREZYA 08-11-2005 12:27 PM

The gas tank is under the rear seat. You can visibly see that in the picture above.
Brahmzy 08-11-2005 12:31 PM

So, how much does this thing weigh? 3lbs? 7lbs? 11lbs?
tool1128 08-11-2005 12:53 PM
ok get this one then..

yeah yeah I know they are crazy expansive already thanks!
this is why I will jump on the bandwagon and get the smaller one! :)
jnorth85 08-11-2005 01:35 PM

the 05's have the underbody shields, but im still curious on how much this thing actually improves the air flow, it looks cool, its cheap so that alone is enough reason to buy it.
STi-MAN 08-11-2005 02:29 PM
Doubt the rear diffuser is going to be much good unless you have the other underbody panels too.
sti's have almost the same underbody pieces as the 06 except for they're added dp aeropiece, basically subaru is trying to smooth out the airflow under the cars look at the undercarriage of a r34. im glad that alot of people are giving they're advice on how to mount the diffuser, it would still be nice to see what the 06 looks like underneath the diffuser.

me too!!!
Scooby South 08-11-2005 05:50 PM

ok....Let me help out here...

The rear diffuser uses brackets to hold it on...I have one as of today...and should be a piece of cake to fit...

the rear part has a bracket that attaches to the rear section of the car....Look under your bumper and you will see a lip edge on the back of the tire well...thats where you will bolt up the rear bracket ....no biggie...

Next thing is...you will have to drill 3 holes in your spare tire well to bolt up the front part...no biggie...using some 1/2 PVC from Home depot should fix that..along with some carriage bolts that will go thru the spare tire well...(Remove your spare for the drilling part..)....put the carriage bolts in...along with the custom fabed PVC spacer...and your your done...:).....I have a JDM Pro angled exhaust..and it looks at first glance like it will clear with about 1/8 to 1/4 in clearance...I am going to put a piece of aluminum more forward of the current one for more heat sheild protection...

Heres why it wont work....with out the drilling...
the 06 has brackets that are attached to the sparetire well already..and they are already undercoated...so I am not sure how they were attached to the well...but anyways..I will have mine on this weekend...with PICS so you guys don't have to stress...its not a BIG deal ..really..maybe about 45 mins max...

you guys that want them japanparts...for the Benjiman are welcome to do that...but I can safely say that your local Subaru Dealer will get it for you a bit cheaper...they are like 85 bones at FULL retail...from the dealer...

I will keep you guy up to date....OH..BTW...Looks like it will fit the 02's on up crowd..;)
as we sorta test fitted one on a 02 today...

Bill
jnorth85 08-11-2005 05:55 PM

great info bill, cant wait to see it, if the peice actually improves air flow i will deff be interested in picking one up.
psyber_0ptix 08-11-2005 05:56 PM

lemme drive down so you can test fit on a gc
Kostamojen 08-11-2005 07:26 PM

I noticed that with our GC's, we have those two wierd rubber bump thingies in the tire well. Those might line up with the front (or rear, whatever) mount holes on the diffuser...
kunfuzion 08-11-2005 08:01 PM

does anyone have the part number for the side under panels? thanks.
