Finally in, 06 diffuser part 2

DrD 08-11-2005 11:52 PM
Heres why it wont work....with out the drilling...
the 06 has brackets that are attached to the sparetire well already..and they are already undercoated...so I am not sure how they were attached to the well...
any chance you could snap a shot of the brackets on the STi? Also - any idea if these brackets exist only on the STi, or if they are on the WRX as well? (the local dealer has a wrx on a back lot, but I didn't think to check the underside when they brought me back to take a look - no 06 STi's yet, and they weren't sure when they might be showing up)
STi-MAN 08-12-2005 01:31 AM
also the 04's dont have the side pieces that run along the rocker pannels
05's do, sorry plus if anyone wants my diffuser im thinking of pputting up for sale. when i get a chance ill take a pic of the bracket.

why you wanting to sell it???? I think it definately helps complete the rear end..:D

I will take pics this evening...
psyber_0ptix 08-12-2005 09:46 AM

i wonder if this would interfere with a trailer hitch
jnorth85 08-12-2005 09:52 AM

im sure it would deffinately interfere, but if you have that on there its going to mess up the air flow anyways so it would sort of defeat the purpose.
AlbaScoob 08-12-2005 09:52 AM

make a mold...do some carbon fiber versions...
jnorth85 08-12-2005 09:53 AM

very good idea as well, even a F/G version would be nice and cheap!
silverF4turbo 08-12-2005 10:08 AM

If its functional okay... it doesn't even look that good unlike the HKS Kansai Service diffuser for 04-05 or Vishnu diffuser for Evo
STi-MAN 08-12-2005 10:17 AM

its because its more of a street version of a diffuser, it has drain areas if water is trapped which the kansai doesnt have, i'd say the kansai is easily a better diffuser but it does draw way more attention then the 06 one.
javid 08-12-2005 10:36 AM
There is absolutely no way Subaru would put that on the car if it didn't work.
Yeah, just look at the OEM canards; HIGHLY functional.
Scooby South 08-12-2005 10:50 AM
i wonder if this would interfere with a trailer hitch
Actually...we test fitted the rear diffuser on a 05 STi with a factory hitch....
the back of the diffuser butted up to the hitch crossbeam...with no interference as it goes right up to the edge of the beam...again..these are all at first glance...not sure how effective it will be other than looks...as the air thats being diffused will hit the crossbeam of the hitch... but like I said...it should work...

to review..
test fitted on a 02 WRX sedan
test fitted on a 05 STi with a slanted exhaust
test fitted on a 05 STi with a Greddy Evo and a trailer hitch...

the rear bracket thats on the 05 will work...but we learned today that you will have to drill into the rear seam...(non-structural) to get the bracket to fit...the 06 STi's have the bolt holes already on that seam...It will sit about 1/4 higher than it will on the stock 06 due to the drilling for the bracket...

more later...

Bill
djerickd 08-12-2005 11:09 AM

I can't wait to see those pics Bill! Also is there anything special to make it work on teh 02?

wanna see some pictures already! hah good job on all the test fitting. yea the bracket doesnt have a mounting point unless you make one.

well... my trailer hitch is situated behind/above the bottom of my rear bumper, so the only part dragging is the htich mount.

i would imagine it'd be better than not having it there because its blocking a ot of the airflow that would have been captured by the rear bumper. (like a parachute)

i'm just wondering if i could moficy the braket for the mounting to be utlized with the hitch mount.

HAHAHAHAHAHA - yah I'm sure the WRC team uses extremely similar canards because they help them get chicks. Get a clue.

im sure you could get it to fit, you may have to trim it a bit but other than that i bet it would fit fine.
Scooby South 08-12-2005 03:45 PM

another update....

Test fitted to a stock 03 WRX wagon...:D

next is a legacy GT...

it will mount up the same on all of them the sme way.....with the drilling and whatnot....

tried it on a 01 Forester just for kicks...AIN'T gonna Work...the rear crossmember is to far back and hits the front of the diffuser and won't let it sit flush....I am waiting on a 93-01 Impreza to show up...so I can test it there also...

But its looking good for all the later model stuff..:)..

Bill
psyber_0ptix 08-12-2005 03:46 PM

or just ditch the hitch

i only got it for my bikerack anyways....

and i'vebeen lazy for the past few months.

bump for interest and pics!

right now I am just test fitting to everything that comes into the shop..so once its on my car...I will then be into the waiting game for the things to come off backorder as i got the only US spec'd one in the warehouse...

very understandable.

but when you get around to it, please post pics (and maybe of the process)

:p

wish her a get well soon from nabisco
ZLODEY 08-13-2005 10:05 AM

We need to see what is under '06 STi diffuser, maybe it's not a drilled holes but additional bracket which is simply welded to the body...
Scooby South 08-13-2005 10:35 AM
We need to see what is under '06 STi diffuser, maybe it's not a drilled holes but additional bracket which is simply welded to the body...
Exactly what it is....3 brackets that are welded to the Spare tire well...but to make it work on earlier cars...you can

a) drill holes and provide spacers to the diffuser

b) weld the brackets on..(and get your undercoating screwed up)..

Placement is going to be the key here...

Thanks for the well wishes...(Hospital has Internet)

Shes doing OK...she just got her catscan done...now its a wait and see what the docs find out...

Bill
VSGTS14 08-13-2005 10:53 AM

i think just drilling and using spacers would be find..i mean there is nothing under there
i like HKS rear diffuser...there is actually a vendor who supplies it

ZLODEY 08-13-2005 05:07 PM

I guess welding a braket to the spare tire well is much easier solution + looks like stock...
knotty_dread 08-13-2005 07:47 PM

I guess im a little late. bump for pics.
Jpapania 08-14-2005 01:05 PM

So this is sounding a little more complex than all of us originally thought, but not too horrible. I always wanted to get the stock diffuser that was available for the bug eyes, but figured it would be too much work to fit to an 04 wagon:

Also, look at the price Subaru Genuing parts is going to be carrying the 06 diffuser for:

https://www.subarugenuineparts.com/product_info.php?products_id=918

For $68 it is definitely worth a try.
slowscooby 08-14-2005 04:31 PM

Well...IIRC earlier in the thread you said the rear bracket boltsed up to a lip on the backside on the spare well right? If that does in fact work without drilling, i would just bolt that side up and see how flush it is to the well. Is it close? If it was i would double tape the front of the diffuser to the well and be done with it. I got some heavy duty outdoor DST holdin on my front canards....they are doin great.
ZLODEY 08-14-2005 05:24 PM

I still don't belive 06 STi has a 3 holes in the spare tire well. We need to see Service Manual or ask someone with 06 STi to remove the diffuser and show us pictures.
WRX Ver.7 08-14-2005 07:00 PM

Just ordered one for my 02 WRX. Guess we shall see what all is involved getting it installed on that year.
STi-MAN 08-14-2005 07:08 PM

where are the mounted pictures? by the way im selling my diffuser if anyone wants.

What didn't you understand....NO The 06 DOES NOT HAVE HOLES...it had BRACKETS WELDED TO BOTTOM of the Spare Tire Well....To mount it to earlier models..you have to drill holes..I have said this like 4 times now..

Bill
itjustWoRX 08-14-2005 10:42 PM

I will see when I get my diffuser here, but is it so hard to get this "brackets welded to bottom" from 06 STi (if it is not the same brackets which come with diffuser) and weld it to 05 STi? Guess it is 5 minute job... WHY TO DRILL HOLES if you could weld the brackets in the same way it is done on 06 STi model???
jigga 08-15-2005 07:51 AM

It was mentioned a few posts up that welding the brackets to the car would mess up the undercoating down there..
jigga 08-15-2005 07:58 AM

New question.. ( I hope it was not answered earlier and I missed it!).

I have the subaru diffuser on my 02 wrx which comes as part of subaru's oem skirt package (see pic in post #90 by Jpapania), and would like to know if the new diffuser that just came out would fit onto my car even with the other 'diffuser' in place. I am planning on having 2 diffusers on there so to speak at the end of the day. The bumper-mounted one, and the other one that mounts under the car that were have been looking at.

Thanks:)
It was mentioned a few posts up that welding the brackets to the car would mess up the undercoating down there..
It's extremely easy to respray undercoating. They sell spray cans of it at almost all auto parts stores. 3m also makes some really good stuff that you can order over the web. That being said, I would guess screws/bolts would do more than an adequate job - but I haven't seen how it mounts in person.

Yeah, Subaru would never put anything on the car if it didn't work. They have no desire to make a lot of money off of a little bit of plastic that's only there for looks.

I think these "diffusers", to use the term loosely, will sell like the proverbial hotcakes. People crave go-fast items and aerodynamics is one of the last black arts that can't be tested by anyone outside of a very expensive facility. Personally, I think they look silly. There's certainly no venturi effect coming off of this piece of body work. And the turbulent airflow under the car won't be sped up at all. So no downforce will come from this thing. As for cleaning up the airflow in the last 36 inches of car length, well, that might help with fuel economy, but I think most people putting this on their car are already ruining their fuel economy with the large rear wing they are probably already running.
Jonnyfilmboy 08-16-2005 08:34 PM

I say get it if you like the way it looks. But don't try and convince us that it's doing anything.
Scooby South 08-16-2005 09:22 PM

OK...a little bit of an update...

I have some pictures...and will upload them here shortly...

I had to cut the diffuser for my angled exhaust...it wouldn't center up without cutting it...so lesson learned...not a big deal...as the rest is pretty solid...I had to cut a part of the side where the heatshield is to allow for my canister..its about 3in square chuck out of the front part....hardly noticible...Had a hell of time lining the stupid thing up...and ended up drilling like 5 holes before it was right...(agian not structural, so not a big deal...)...Still have to drill the 3 holes in the trunk well..so I can bolt it up in the front...But the back is pretty decent...other than the initial line up....but its now level with the bottom of the rear bumper...:)...

I got the factory bracket in today...WAY to AWKWARD to mount with those things...they are about 4 in wide...has about 3in drop and has 3 holes...1 that the bolt goes thru...and the others I havn't a clue why they are there...one of them is like a slit....that the hook on the diffuser on the far left front has next to the hole to hang it...(I cut that off since I mounted this thing different)....but I have a picture of them also...give me few..and I will post them up...have to go clean up..and drill the other three holes in the spare tire well real quick...

More later

Looking good.
Scooby South 08-16-2005 11:15 PM

ok...

the finished product.. for the first one...

the 2nd one is Where I mounted the bolts thru the trunk to mount the front part of this...right now its kinda temparary...as I am going to redo the holes with silicone....and trim the diffuser better with a dremel..I used sheet metel sheers to get rough...then I will smooth it out...I am probably going to put some heat tape where its really close to the exhaust...and lastly...I have to put bigger shims in as the front part hits the bottem of the sway bar...minor things.....

you can see from the trunk the pattern of the holes....I will get measurements and let you guys know the spacing...

you can kinda see the lip that you drill into...Alignment here is critical...overall...not a bad mod....just a little frustrating with the back bracket....its offsett way over...I thought it was centered...hence why I had to drill more holes in the lip... oh well...looks pretty good...I doubt if I feel it...but I like how it completes the rear end...

Bill
Scooby South 08-16-2005 11:19 PM

Oh yeah...I will get better pics with the diffuser off (since I have to button it up nice anyways..)..that way you will see the back bracket....the front holes....and the pvc spacers I used to level it out....
