Actually you prove the opposite point. That to save a few cents per car they removed the bottom plates. The channels are in the form of the plastic. No money saved in designing a new piece.

Just recieved my diffuser in the mail today. Will be posting pics later this evening. Install will be on a MY02 WRX sedan. Thanks Jon for the purchase.
| WRX Ver.7 | 08-22-2005 11:16 PM |
OK, the diffuser is installed and looks really good IMO. Here is some of the things i discovered. #1) For a MY02 WRX sedan, the mounting brackets for the back are NOT necessary. #2) This is a really easy install, requires a 1/8" drill bit to pre-drill holes and a 1/4" drill bit to mount the supplied rear bracket. #3) Functional or not, I think it looks really good. But, on to how I did the install. The first thing I did was jack the car up and put her on jack-stands. Next came the "check it out" trip under the car. After holding the piece up in possision, I marked where I had to cut in order to clear the HKS Carbon-Ti muffler and pipe. I used a pneumatic die-grinder to cut this plastic with. After a second test fit, which I was happy with, I used a Snap-On 90 degree spike to mark where the rear bracket mounts. After that, removed the piece and used the 1/8 dit to pre-drill and then the 1/4 to make the final hole.
After I attached the rear mounting bracket (supplied) I then pushed the back of the diffuser up to check allignment. At that point is when I also checked the spacing between the back 2 mounting holes and the bottom of the spare tire well. Only about 1/4" on the passenger side and about 3/4" on the driver side. I dug around in my screw bin and located some # 14 x 1 1/2 pan head screws and some fender washers with rubber grommets on them. This is what I used to secure the back to mounting points with. I hope this helps everybody out. So now, I guess that it is picture time. Attached are links to the pics in this order: 1) Diffuser cut to clear muffler. 2) screws and washers used to secure rear mounting points, and 3 - 5) diffuser installed. If anybody wants to host these and post them, please feel free to do so. And once again, Hope this helps everybody out.
New question.. ( I hope it was not answered earlier and I missed it!).
I have the subaru diffuser on my 02 wrx which comes as part of subaru's oem skirt package (see pic in post #90 by Jpapania), and would like to know if the new diffuser that just came out would fit onto my car even with the other 'diffuser' in place. I am planning on having 2 diffusers on there so to speak at the end of the day. The bumper-mounted one, and the other one that mounts under the car that were have been looking at.
Thanks:)
No sir, on the passenger side, i tightened it all the way down and on the drivers side tightened it down until the diffuser bottomed out on the underside of the tire well. There was like a 1/8" gap left. Oh well :)
Yeah, Subaru would never put anything on the car if it didn't work. They have no desire to make a lot of money off of a little bit of plastic that's only there for looks.
snip
I think these "diffusers", to use the term loosely, will sell like the proverbial hotcakes. People crave go-fast items and aerodynamics is one of the last black arts that can't be tested by anyone outside of a very expensive facility. Personally, I think they look silly. There's certainly no venturi effect coming off of this piece of body work. And the turbulent airflow under the car won't be sped up at all. So no downforce will come from this thing. As for cleaning up the airflow in the last 36 inches of car length, well, that might help with fuel economy, but I think most people putting this on their car are already ruining their fuel economy with the large rear wing they are probably already running.
I have to agree with most of what you're saying. I can't see this helping that much with anything really. The only thing it looks like it's good for is getting rid of a small amount of drag effect the bumper has and stablizing the air exiting from the underside of the car. It also would make more of a difference on a car that is more aerodynamic. Meaning slapping this on a car without more of the plastic stuff under doesn't seem to make much sense to me.
But as everyone seems to say, It's your car, do whatever you want.

I think w/ a vehicle w/ such a high stance as the Impreza- anything to smooth flow underneath would be helpful.

So, guys, my opionion is that drilling holes is not the right idea! Maybe someone have a possiblity to check 06 STi's service parts manual. There should be a metal bracket(s) which are welded to 06 model under-body. If you could find part number it would be excellent. Guess everyone who is buying diffuser would like to buy this bracket also, it is much easier to weld one piece then drill holes in car body :)

If it's welded to the undercarriage- there is a good chance there isn't a "part #" for it. Know someone might easily fab an identical bracket that could be tacked on :D
I remember when the v8 spec C came out - had a nifty little lower strut brace support piece in the trunk- unfortunately it was a a drill AND weld deal to install it :(

| WRX Ver.7 | 08-26-2005 04:20 PM |
Yes, I have some pictures. It is a very simple install at least on a MY02. There are a total of 4 holes that have to be drilled. 2 that hold the supplied bracket on and then 2 that hold the back section of the diffuser itself to the spare tyre well.
