How to paint your stock wheels

Well, after many pm's asking me how I painted my wheels I decided to make a "how to" on it. Maybe this could be stickyed
I used Duplicolor Wheel Paint that I bought at Auto Zone, and the color was graphite.
Okay, first you have to clean the wheels really well, (I used Eagle One wheel and tire cleaner), then I used a sponge to get any excess dirt off. Next you need to rough up the surface so the paint can bond better. I used emery cloth to do that, make sure you get all of the corners and crevices, otherwise your paint will start chipping off in the places you didn't get. Next make sure you brush off all of the residue and then start to mask the tires off. I used a large card board box that had been broken down to lay the wheels on, and used painters tape and packing paper that I had laying around the house to tape everything that I didn't want to paint (masking tape would probably work better though since it sticks better). Make sure that everything gets taped up really well, even small gaps will leave notcible paint lines, and don't forget the valve stems. After everything is taped off start painting, I used 3 coats of graphite and 2 coates of clear coat which was about 1 can of each.
Some Notes: If it's windy out don't paint. More paint will blow away then get on the wheels and you will end up running out of paint faster and your wheels may end up looking all blotchy.
In my experiance this paint takes about 10 minutes to dry hard between coats, but if it is humid or raining out it will take much longer.
I hope this answers any questions, but if you have any that didn't get answered let me know.

Nice. How about a close up shot of the wheels? I've been thinkin about painting mine.

I'll take one and post it soon

Okay, well there is the pic of the wheel .. it's been about 6 months since I painted them and they do have some chips, but they are mainly from taking the wheels off and on so often. besides the few chips they are holding up well.

did you just mask off the outer rim? Did you polish that or just leave it alone? it looks shiny.

I just taped off the lip .. the original color is bright enough to look polished

Does the paint not stick to the center caps or did you just decide to go without them for some other reason?
| criscross79 | 04-21-2005 09:09 PM |
I never painted them, I liked the way it looked without them, but if you want to paint them, you shouldn't have a problem

After reading this thread, I decided to finally do it as well. I figured it's a cheap upgrade now that I spent the money I had saved for rims on an accessport :p I had to go to 3 AutoZone's before I found enough cans of bronze. I'm happy with the way it turned out, but it really did take all day!

nice!!
I am going to "bronze" my newly acquired wrx wheels as well. They will look TITS on my Winestone (maroon) turbo Leggy.
And cheap is right TEKNOSYS.... I even bought my wrx wheels (which are almost perfect btw) for $100. So for about $120 I'll have +1 sized bronze rollers - sweet.

my own opinion, instead of all the cleaning.finger cramps and frustration when the paint doesnt stick to that little spot that you didnt get. take the wheels off dismount the tires and have them media blasted(wallnut, aluminum oxide ETC ) and tell the porson doing it that you intend to repaint anyhow a good sandblaster can usually do this without going all the way to bare metal than you are left with a perfect surface to paint on to

I painted the stockers on my pathfinder this weekend...heres what I did:
clean with carwash and then dry off
sand down
clean again and dry
shoot 1 coat of primer
4 coats of paint
3 coats of clearcoat
I didn't mask the tires off because I'm about to put new ones on.

Does anyone have an experience with a sandblaster on wheels? I have one available to me, but the owner only uses it to blast glas pieces. I could use tips on what material to blast with (I have the sand that came with the blaster), and how much polishing may need to be done afterwards. (Tire will of course be off the wheels)

Nice! I painted my track rims also! I used the Duplicolor Gunmetal color.

i did the dupli color almost two years ago. and my rims are still in good condition. a way to not spray the tires is to take index cards and stuff them in between the tire and the rim.

I'd like to know how you guys are masking or taping off the outer lip. I tried this past weekend but it never ends up round.
My goal is to keep the outer lip silver and the rest of the wheel black.
Thx,
Jack

I too would like to know how you are masking off the lip.
| criscross79 | 06-27-2005 02:56 PM |
I just used short strips of masking tape and used the small ridge on the inside of the lip as a guide
| jacksonww1 | 06-27-2005 06:17 PM |
Now here is an idea that was passed on to me - Vaseline!
1. Wipe down the area you don't want paint on with Vaseline
2. Paint
3. Let everything dry
4. Then, wipe off the Vaseline
Makes sense to me and should be a lot easier than using tape.
I'll give it a try this weekend.

Hmm.. sounds like it could work, but I'm thinking it may get a little messy, and you may end up with vaseline on parts you DO want painted. But its definitely worth a shot, let us all know how it goes, cause I'm sure it beats taping.
Edit: Just out of curiosity, anyone know roughly how much it would cost to powder coat your wheels? I've heard powdercoating is some pretty tough stuff, and if its not too much, I may have it professionally done instead.

I just used longer pieces of tape and ran it in the crease of the lip and face. It crinkled a lot, but fold it over and add tape to cover the rest of the rim.

I just re-painted my stockers silver.
They turned out pretty good, even though I was painting in my garage (with a dehumidifier running) while it was raining outside (killed quite a few brain cells...).
I just roughed them up with some 600 grit sandpaper and got off some dried-on contaminants. Then I just sprayed with some rubbing alcohol to get off any grease or dust from sanding.
I had the can too far away and was doing my coats too thin, so it turned out more matte finish, even with clear coat. I may repaint them bronze later, though.
Hmm... I DO have a spare set of wheels.......

Amazing the fun that can be had with spray paint. I've been sniffing enough fumes to kill what remaining brain cells I have left. I am thinking about doing this mod to my wheels as well.
Nice job everyone, they look great.
Oh, and the Vaseline trick worked great for painting model airplanes. I used it all the time. :)
Blue painters tape is your friend for all masking needs. Also, remember to clean the metal surfaces with denatured alcohol to remove any grease and oil from the wheel, especially if you have touched your wheels with your bare fingers!
Another tip is to wear latex gloves when handling your cleaned wheels. If you get any oil on the wheels from your skin, the paint will not adhere as well.

This thread got me enthusiastic about painting.
I'm gonna paint my race wheels bronze, as that will look damn sexy on a red car (or so I hope...)
I'll give vaseline a try instead of traditional masking. If possible, I will get some pics.

I would use blue painters masking tape if you are going to try and protect the lip of your wheels. At least with the tape you can pull it off and try again if you do not get the alignment right. Vaseline is rather messy and best used for places where tape/paper would be difficult to place.

what about the wheel weights? When they are rebalanced there will be a spot. can u take them off and put them back on
| IronMonkeyL255 | 06-29-2005 03:55 PM |
You can, but you have to be really careful to get it back in exactly the same spot, or else it won't be balanced anymore.
I just left mine on, and I'll paint the spot where they were when I get the tires taken off.
As it is, only one of my race wheels had a wheel weight on the front. They were incredibly well-balanced without needing much weight.

One of them I had tried stripping all the paint/clearcoat off of, but just ended up taking a little bit off of the wheel. Now there is a little wavy spot there.
I didn't use vaseline to mask them, as the S-03s that are on there were incredibly easy to mask off.
After seeing how these turned out, I just may have to do my everyday wheels like this.

When I did mine, I just wedged index cards in between the tire and the rim (the short way). Easier than masking and saved a lot of time.
| IronMonkeyL255 | 06-29-2005 04:56 PM |
I'll have to try that when I repaint my regular wheels. I didn't even think of that.

Powdercoating is anywhere from 250 to 300 for the set of 4
It is tough as hell though and wont chip or knick. Plus there are gazillion colors to choose from including metallic flakes and pearls.

That's a bit out of my price range. It is durable, though.

p.s. it's on a red wagon. I don't have a camera other wise id show you.

Yeah I didn't know if I wanted to do a bigger unpainted lip, but i turned out liking it. Took 2 hours to cover up the lips w/ painters tape :X

was wondering if anyone have a painted RS/WRX stock wheels on a CGM?

So, I'm having problems painting the STi rims. I used aircraft stripper to remove the paint and clear coat. The result is a rough metal surface, so I figure no need to sand. When I use the Dupli-Color Graphite paint, it seems to be.. textured (I spray lightly with 6-12" distance from the rim). If I put a heavy coat so it pools (4-6" from the rim, but heavy), it gives me the result I expect, a smooth even finish. The problem is that I can't do that consistantly, and it's obvious it's not the way to do it when you can't even see the "BBS" or "17x7.5" thing on the wheel. We have high humidity around these parts, but I don't really have much other choice during these months.
What am I doing wrong? Is it the sand part, technique, or humidity?

instead of using one heavy coat, try multiple light to medium coats . . eventually it should smooth out, also if you plan on using clear coat, that should help smooth the surface out as well. Also with high humidity you will need to let the paint set longer between coats .. especially with heavy coats

When I mean textured, you can run your fingers across it and it will "break off." When you spray more on, it collects more. My friend is having the same problem. After it dries, and you run a terry cloth over it, all the fibers will be stuck to the rim. I'll take a pic to try to show you guys.

have you tried sanding the wheel down a little bit after stripping it?

No, I thought it was rough enough. I've determined it's either the humidity or the paint. After removing the wheel off the newspaper, I ran my finger thru the overspray that got on the newspaper and it was like powder. This is weird. Time to look for new paint.

I have the same paint. I did my rims in white. It powders up like this because the paint, when dry. will resist chipping and brake dust will not fade the paint when you have to clean them. Go on duplicolor's website www.duplicolor.com. They give directions on exactly painting your rims. One last question, did you use primer? Most paints will run into problems if the surface is not cleaned , sanded and primed first. A;lso give your rims a good scrub to remove the paint stripper. Even the slight residue from the stripper can and will do strange things to your paint job.

Do you get a real rough surface when it dries? That's what I'm worried about. Never in my life have I seen rims... result in this manner. I'm used to the smooth like car paint finish. Yes, I used a primer by Krylon, with the same, silly string/powder like result. I wiped most of the excess off in frustration when it dried. I'll probably have to redo this rim. I have smooth and rough parts on random areas of the rim from my "testing."
Lastly, how smooth do you sand it too? Is your goal a real rough surface (smooth concrete cinder block like), or a smooth only to the eye (say... freshly sanded wood). What makes less sense is my rim started out "concrete like" after removing all the old paint. Isn't it supposed to be smooth underneith?

This has been a project Ive wanted to do for a while since car repairs have dipped into my new wheel fund. After reading this thread Ive got a few questions Im hoping some of you can help me out on. Have any of you had problems with rust or other damage because you removed the 'stock' clearcoats? When you say low humidity, what is exactly low? Here in NY Ill be lucky to see under 50% untill late August. Have any of you used your painted wheels in the winter, how did it hold up? Did any of you buy matching colored lugs or just use the stock chrome ones? Whats this wetsand process a few of you have mentioned? Is it just sanding a wet surface or is it a brand? And finally, which color do you think would look better on an 01 ridge blue RS, graphite or bronze?, out of the duplicolor line. Sorry for so many questions, but thanks for any help.
