How to paint your stock wheels part 3

RumblingREX 12-22-2005 07:15 AM
Does the paint hold up against tire mounting?
My paint didn't, that is why I left a silver lip around the rim.
thorongil 12-22-2005 02:27 PM
Does the paint hold up against tire mounting?
I got a few scratches on mine when the tires were mounted and balanced. Though only in the paint, the primer seemed to hold up where the paint was scratched off.

After several weeks of driving through snow, slush, and salty roads, my painted wheels seem to be holding very well. Though, they show the salt so much more than my silver stokcers ever did.
the_colombian 12-22-2005 04:55 PM

I think im going to do mine tomorrow. I havent decided if graphite or bronze but I will post pics.
Solar 12-22-2005 05:28 PM

good thread, definatly got me thinking of a project. If the stockers turn out good, maybe I'll try my ROTA's
subenerd 12-22-2005 10:49 PM
Does the paint hold up against tire mounting?
Mine have held up very well after 7 months of driving in all kinds of conditions. No chipping except for the lugnuts...its not a good idea to paint those they chip instantly--DUH :p (hmm..how do I know  ) Im going to get some black lugs soon anyways. If you do excellent prep and good spaying techniques you shouldnt have any problems

I will post more pics when it stops raining
steve 12-22-2005 11:25 PM

that green color is awesome!

Back to it, I refinished my old WRX wheels with the duplicolor Graphite, and they lasted for years without any issues. I chose to apply another coat after 2 years, but didn't really have to.

This time I'm kicking it up a notch.
I've been able to find a company that will put any custom color in a spray bomb for you. I'm thinking of going with a nice deep bronze on my STi stockers. That should look better than the gold, imho.
Tim-H 12-22-2005 11:33 PM

oh man NEED pics of the green wheels ON the car!
Chi_San 12-23-2005 04:17 AM

I'm thinking about doing some Sea Mist green to match my paint, and if that doesn't look good, I'll go with a darker grey.

Not sure if I want to paint the center caps, though, or just leave them off...
ducksoup 12-26-2005 12:04 PM

This summer I painted my wheels graphite. After mounting new tires, taking the wheels on and off for various things, and driving on country dirt/gravel roads... they are looking pretty chippy. So I think I'm going to paint them bronze this time. What should I do first? Do I need to completely remove the graphite paint or can I just rough it up pretty good?
ducksoup 12-26-2005 08:01 PM

bump ^
criscross79 12-26-2005 10:15 PM

If it was me I would strip them down again, but it might work if you leave it. Of course if the orignal paint that you put on keeps chipping, the new layer will also chip.
njskatchmo 01-03-2006 02:07 PM

Painted mine grey and then changed my mind to bronze.

hey njskatchmo
is that dark color in the first photo really grey like u said or is it the "graphite" duplicolor wheel paint? sorry to get all technical on you but i just bought four cans of graphite duplicolor for my silver wrx and wanted to know if that is the color it will turn out.

thnx
steve 01-03-2006 07:32 PM

Your bronze looks good njskatchmo.
So good, I have to post my bronze wheels too.

Goodbye tacky gold wheels, hello sanded and filthy!

Some rubbing alcohol to prep the surface, a few business cards from a failed venture, and the first coat. No turning back now.

Hey, that's a nice offset. I can finally see the gold brakes.

And finally, the finished product compared to what I started with.

It took me a total of 7 hours to finish this set. The STi BBS wheels have a lot of little nooks and crannies that are hard to get into with sandpaper, and even harder to paint. They still came out perfect though, and imho, look a lot better than stock.
darknightohio 01-03-2006 08:45 PM

Wow very nice hypa, looks great. Any pics of the whole car with the painted wheels?
aspitfire 01-03-2006 09:31 PM

hypa, what color is that?
phils04wrx 01-03-2006 09:36 PM

wowee
excellent job..... what did u use on your wheels for sanding / cleaning / prep ?
ControlFreak 01-03-2006 10:21 PM

I gotta do this to my 06..
Wow very nice hypa, looks great. Any pics of the whole car with the painted wheels?
I'll take some pics today of the complete car. It was a bit cold out here, so I left the car in the heated garage for a few days to ensure these things dried.
hypa, what color is that?
It's a Duplicolor Bronze. The paint is an actual wheel paint, so it should take the abuse that wheels see. I've been using the Duplicolor paint for a few years now, and it works really well. Once the wheel is prepped, it's a matter of figuring out the spray pattern, and just keeping track of time. Too much drying time and the next coat turns pasty white, too little time and you get runs.

I decided against the clearcoat on this set of wheels. I wasn't to keen on the finish once the CC was applied.
steve 01-04-2006 11:04 AM
excellent job..... what did u use on your wheels for sanding / cleaning / prep ?
Thank you.
:)

I used 2 different grits of sandpaper, 200 for initial damage, and 800 for final prep. In hindsite, I should have used a 3 stage, 200/400/800. It would have come out looking smoother than glass, but as it stands I'm happy with the results.

For cleaning after sanding I used compressed air, then rubbing alcohol on a rag. The air cleaned all of the sanding debris, while the alcohol made sure there was no grease or nastiness that would affect the coat.

When I painted the wheel, I used a rotating platform (from my daughter's old dollhouse) so I could spin it while painting without much hassle. These wheels are tough to paint, and the rotating platform made it a lot easier.

I also set up a small spray booth in the corner of my garage. A bit of plastic hanging from the ceiling helped me block off the rest of the garage, while keeping the heat in the booth. Btw, I had a small electric heater with me to keep the temps up during spraying, and a bucket of hot water. The hot water works wonders with this paint by allowing me to heat the contents of the can, creating a much finer mist.
hikeeba 01-04-2006 03:36 PM

Wow hypa (and njskatchmo), the bronze looks great! I am looking forward to seeing the STi wheels on a car!

And hypa, thanks for sharing your painting tips. I think I'll do mine this spring.
phils04wrx 01-04-2006 05:21 PM

excellent prep info, thnx
steve 01-04-2006 07:00 PM

no worries.
If it wasn't for guys posting up their work, I would have never tried to paint my first set so long ago.
:D

Here's some pics of the wheels on the car.

No, it was duplicolor metalcast, with the grey cap. they make these metal cast paints that come in all these colors.
njskatchmo 01-04-2006 10:37 PM

I like bronze, but I gotta say I liked them better gold.
njskatchmo 01-04-2006 10:55 PM

I think 200 grit may be a little to low. I used some low grit paper I had laying aorund. lower than 200, and I got scratches on one my rims. for prep. I put my wheel in my bath tub. got a a-shirt on. and started scrubbign with a brillo pad and soft scrub. Then i pat dried the whole deal. Then I sanded with 400 grit, everywhere. The wheel should turn whitish. Then I rinsed with a sponge. Then I pat dried again. Then I paper toweled and alcohol wiped everythign until the towels came up clean. Then I took some paper towels and a flathead and dried out the area between the rim and the tire, otherwise the tape wont stick. Then you take maskign tape and rip a strip and overlay it slightly over the lip. Then you coax it into the crack with the screwedriver making sure it doesnt come off the tirefrom water. Then I took it to my basement utility closet where I have a plastic crate and newspaper on teh floor as well as a lamp that I could focus on the wheel and i small desk lamp that I used to inspect the fine details. I sprayed in sooooo many coats. I didn't have any pasty white effect as desribed above, but the can does suggest to do it all within an hour of starting and allowing 10 minutes between. I did probably 10 super light coats. My first coat, I could barely tell it was painted, but it was just to get some paint to stick so that the upper layers would stick well. Be careful to paint the insides of the pair of spoke. They are tricky and so are the lug nuts. Don't rush it. You'll get a run and you'll regret that I used duplicolor clear wheel coating. Make sure to get a lot of paint around the lip so it can withstand mounting. Thats it. It took me 4 days to complete. 1 wheel each night. It took me about 5 hours per tire, I was realllllly anal. I let each wheel dry all night. The directions say they can be handled in 3 hours but I let it sit. Make sure to tighten your lug nuts. Mine came loose on 1 tire.
steve 01-05-2006 02:15 PM
I think 200 grit may be a little to low.
It is a really gritty paper. Definately too much for a final sand, but with the other stages I found it cuts down the amount of prep time.

Here's some more pics of wheels I painted.

Next time I'll be using an HVLP spray gun and a custom color. It was just too damn cold to spend that kind of cash, and take the chance that it wouldn't take.
hikeeba 01-05-2006 03:05 PM

hypa: bornze wheels + blue STI = RAWKS!

I think that looks great! Needs a little sun, tho, but nonetheless, TEH AWESOME!
phils04wrx 01-07-2006 08:52 PM

wow njskatchmo .... thats some suby love....... nothin like spendin quality time in the bathtub with your wheels!!!!! thnx for the info!

Jasvboost 02-03-2006 11:56 PM

hikeeba, I used the same Duplicolor Graphite everyone else has. I'm glad I did it. Looks 10X better than stock, IMO. I think the car looks mean all blacked out.

Hey, thanks Jasvboost for the pics and info! You're right, the graphite does look good on the black, especially when the sun hits it and you can see the color difference against the body color. Wow, they look good!

I was trying to decide between gold, bronze, and the graphite. I'd say gold is out now, bronze is still in the running, but the graphite is definitely ahead. Thanks again, Jasvboost!
migs76 02-10-2006 10:41 AM

Handsdown
Oof! Those 06 wheels look great!

Handsdown, your bronze wheels look duller/flatter than some of the other ones here. Which paint did you use? Duplicolor? Please advise.

Handsdown bronze:

Other bronze (I like these, too. thanks Hypa!)

I'm having a difficult time deciding which color to go with. I may end up picking two collors, and try one color on one side of the car, and the other color on the other side. You can only view one side of the car at a time, and it would only be a temporary thing. I know, i know... It's a bad idea. Flame away....
steve 02-11-2006 11:59 AM

no worries hikeeba.
I also considered 2 colors, 1 for each side. It would look awesome, but my wife called me a ricer, and I decided against it.
:(
haha i wish i had one of those...

how much are you supposed to sand off?

just make sure you go over every part of the wheel?
haha, the rotating platform can be found at hobby shops. People use them to display crap they have around the house, but they work well for painting wheels.

When it comes to sanding, I usually just scuff the piece to the point where it looks cloudy, but still retains a lot of the stock paint. The stock paint will give the new paint something to adhere to. If you take it down to metal, you have to prime, etc, etc, etc. Go over every part of the wheel that you plan to paint, and have at her.

Be sure to clean with rubbing alcohol before spraying. That should clean off any grease or dust that may have settled.

Flat black for thw win :).

sometimes i think the flat black is a little steelie looking for me. experiment with a matte clearcoat so it won't be ultra bling gloss black.

Is there no hood scoop???

Or am I just blind???

It looks good btw!!!
hungryhippos 02-14-2006 04:57 PM

Contemplating this as well. If I do decide to paint the stock wheels, I'd have to go gold FTW!
phils04wrx 02-21-2006 05:30 AM

good obs epaplia........

at first look, i would say he used the flat black on the hood scoop also since there is a spot on the hood that appears to be a different color where the scoop should be........ but then, i look at the headrests and they are extendable............. my 04 wrx does not have extendable headrests and i hope the 06 wrxes dont have them either...... maybe the pic is a rs...... but then, whats with the wrx spolier???????? man ........... youve really messed me up too!!!
Warpainted 02-21-2006 04:04 PM

My 06 TR has extendable headrests. He probably tried to delete the scoop.
phils04wrx 02-21-2006 06:30 PM

whats a TR ?
06suba 02-21-2006 08:27 PM

The moment you've all been waiting for....
It's an 06 2.5i!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just swapped my stockers for new 06 wrx wheels (got them for $490 total brand new).

The spoiler came with the car (as well as the splash guards which I took off)
The spot on the hood is nothing... just a reflection or something.

i used duplicolor bronze with two coats of duplicolor clear and four undercoats of flat black.

i think the undercoats are what make mine look duller. i also like the look.
