I want one too... not for downforce, but to reduce lift and drag for better mpg, and smoother airflow (less noise)... EVEN IF IT'S JUST A LITTLE. (aka... hobby mod)

So do I need to buy brackets to make it fit on my 2006 WRX Ltd?>
| BIGSKYWRX | 12-18-2005 11:14 AM |
There are two brackets- the rear one which I think everyone would want and then the three brackets in the front that if you don't want to drill (but would instead weld) you'd get these.
I guess there is a chance that the 06 WRX's already have the front three brackets already there- I'd look first :)

....sorry....no.
...but Cusco makes a cross brace that bolts between the swaybar mounts that has holes on it JUST for that nice, little, diffuser to attach to....NO drilling/welding/jumping through hoops required ;)

What does the cusco bar actually do? Is it a chasis brace and how close does it come to the rear sway bar? What bolts does it mount to under the car?

Ok so finally got my diffuser on today. I used the 3 factory brackets and had my brother tack weld them to the under side of the spare tire well. Wasn't really a perfect fit initially due to the fact that the 04 spare tire well is does NOT have the indentations(the ones near the center of the tire well)like the 06, but DOES have the outer ones. But wasn't a big deal, nothing a little bending won't fix. :D
I basically mocked it up after every bracket was tacked on to make sure it still lined up properly. You do have to:
1) scrape off the factory under coat.
2) then expose the bare metal by eliminating the paint under the undercoating with a grinder or sandpaper.
3) tack on the 3 brackets. (take your time and measure carefully)
4) you should respray the exposed metal with paint and then some new undercoating (duplicolor or 3m works fine)
5) Let it dry, doesn't take long, and bolt on your new diffuser.
Overall it took about 2 hours or so. Since I had all day, I took my time and got to hang out with my bro. I think the brackets allow the diffuser to sit how it should. Those who screw it directly into the wheel well I would recommend using something like pvc pipe as a spacer to get it to hang at the correct spot, not that it would probably matter much.
I am very happy with the diffuser and would recommend getting it, I could immediately tell the difference with it. The car is definitely quieter on the freeway at 50 mph or faster. Which I would also equate to it helping to smooth out the air. The ride seems smoother too(not as bouncey), but that could be just due to the lack of noise that I used to have, but who knows.
Next up....the two panels that run under each side of the the car. My clips should be here later today.

i was just wondering if having those 3 brackets are required structures sake.
this piece wont bend or flex? will it be supported enough?

Yes I do get it. I had asked a few posts before the post where I asked that whether it was technically considered a chasis or subframe brace but no1 answered that so I figured I'd ask again. In other words, cusco wouldnt have designed such a bulky mount for a little diffuser plate, how does that bar affect handling or rear chasis flex, etc? Is it worthwhile to use the bar over just welding on the mounts? Why would the person in the picture buy the bar and also weld on the mounts when he could have just used the mounts alreadyu attached to the bar? Thats what I'm getting at... sorry if I sounded like I was asking an ignorant question.

The Cusco bar is indeed a brace as well. It mounts under the sway bar brackets and links them, and the rails of the sub-fram, together.
The car in the picture is an '06 (which came with the brackets) with the diffuser removed so you can see the relationship of the Cusco bar to the OEM brackets.

First off I have to say Uncle Scotty you da man! :D And you are absolutely correct. The bar is used in place of the OEM brackets. I just felt that $16 or so and a little hard work was worth it over the Cusco brace. I would recommend the Cusco piece to anyone who didn't want to weld the brackets onto their car, it looks like a really nice piece. The Cusco bar replaces the two front OEM brackets so you can mount the diffuser. Sounds simple enough to me, I wonder why there is so much confusion on this topic.
And no that's not my car in the pic, I got it from a previous post. So no those are not my lateral links and trailing arms...yet.
I could take some pics of my car this weekend if you guys really want to see the install but I painted the brackets black, so it might be tough to see. That's why I used the pic from the previous post because it was really easy to see everything.

I think you meant to say replace the front brackets-the rear bracket (near the bumper would still be used.
If it wouldn't be too much trouble I certainly would like to see pics- I think your the first one to use the three oe brackets. My buddy has a small welder that should be perfect. Did you find "rubber" undercoating in grey- IIRC that's what my undercoating is.

Oops meant to put front, fixed now, thanks.
The undercoating I used was black, that's all they had at the store. It's made by duplicolor. They also had one made by 3M, figure either one would work just fine. Don't know if they have it in grey but I wouldn't doubt it. The stuff makes a mess first time outta the can so I hung some plastic around the exhaust, lateral links, etc., so they wouldn't get hit by any over-spray.
I know I'm not the first to use the OEM brackets, there was someone who used them and had pics in this thread a couple of pages before my post but now they are gone unfortunately.

^^Sorry, parts are already on the car, it'll be easier if I just take some pics this weekend and post for every one to see. All the parts were bought from Jamie at subarugenuineparts.com. I won't get home til the weekend so I'll put up the part number for the bracket(s) x3 then, and the diffuser is a kit that comes with hardware and the bracket for the back of the car. I'm sure you can find that on her site.
| Jpapania | 12-28-2005 08:41 AM |
I apologize if this has already been answered, but I did not see it in the thread. If I use the cusco bar, do I need to buy anything special to attach the diffuser or than the bumper bracket? Do the wholes on the cusco bar just match up to the holes on the rear of the diffuser?
| BIGSKYWRX | 12-28-2005 09:45 AM |
That is correct- I think there may be a hole or two on the diffuser that goes unused, but you'll be bolted solidly to the rear and front. That's my understanding anyways.
| kunfuzion | 12-28-2005 05:04 PM |
1 hole is not used w/ the cusco bar. but it so solid that its not necessary.

OK I may have hit some drama, contrary to what I have been hearing it looks like the Cusco bar alone is not enough you also need a special bracket that goes from the bar to the diffuser. Check out this pic, see the brackets in pink?

There are two brackets, but I am assuming one is for the diffuser to bumper and since I have the Subaru one I would not need it. You can also barely make out the black bracket on this pic as well and you can see how it matches the 06 brackets:

If anyone has the Cusco bar please let me know if this is true. I was going to order the bar from www.rallysportdirect.com, but I am not sure if I do just the bar for $130 if I will get this bracket. I am asking them now to see. Does anyone know how I can get the Cusco bar and the one bracket?
Also I am running the COBB bars and will take pics assuming all of this works.

Hello all,
I probably should have posted this earlier to help some of you out. If you purchase the Cusco bar, you need to make sure you have 672 487 S (I think they're the parts in the pink circle in the photo above) as well. It's a separate part, folks.
See here:
http://www.cuscoracing.com/0511-3.html
I found out the hard way when Steve of Aerosim Research, Ltd. (www.aerosim-research.com) in Costa Mesa, CA was trying to install the diffuser on my 2004 WRX Sedan a few weeks ago. I bought the rear bar from vividracing.com and the diffuser package from SubaruGenuineParts.com (Thanks, Jamie!). The thought what I bought from vividracing.com was enough, but I thought wrong. The bar was only 673 487 A. Because Steve had done a previous installation of the diffuser with the Cusco bar, he knew I needed the Cusco brackets. He ordered it for me and once it arrived, we (we being he) were able to successfully install the diffuser.
The only problem was we didn't need the bracket (P/N: 91285FE000) that came included in Jamie's diffuser bundle. Because it was opened but never used and Jamie's site says that the part is not-returnable (understandably so), I need to get rid of it. If anyone is interested in purchasing it alone, please PM or e-mail me. For those of you who have already purchased or will purchase the diffuser (P/N: 91225FE000) alone, I would love to give you a great deal on this!
Btw, I have a stock 2004 WRX Sedan rear sway bar and a Prodrive axleback exhaust. I didn't have any fitment issues whatsoever. Sorry, I don't have any photos. My setup pretty much looks like anyone else's setup who has installed the 2006 STI diffuser on a 2004+ GD with the Cusco bar.
God bless,
Loren

To get the 672 487 S, Steve faxed in his order to Nukabe Automotive Parts Sales, Inc. in Illinois. They then routed his order to Cusco's office in Torrance, CA. From there, the brackets were shipped to Steve at Aerosim in Costa Mesa, CA. It helped that he already had an existing relationship with someone at the Torrance office.
I'm not sure who you would need to go to to obtain 672 487 S. Your best bet would be one of your local vendors that sells Cusco parts (I guess this was an instance where it was great that you can find pretty much anything in Southern California). Steve sold me the brackets for $48. I have no idea how much they really should've been priced. Aerosim usually takes great care of me though and it's always fun to hang out at the shop!

I'll let y'all know when everything comes in and I get it installed. Think I may be the first wagon to attempt this.

I just orderd the rear difuser for my 05 sti and should get it within the next 2 days. Just for the record the brackets needed for the difuser to fit correctley are Cusco P/N #672 487 s? I also need 4 OE bolts P/N90100-0159?
Any good recomendations on where to buy the brackets?

Wait I am confused, so the bar and diffuser package from vendors don't actually come with the brackets and bolts that are required?
| kunfuzion | 01-12-2006 02:47 AM |
the bolts to mount the rear bracket is not included with any kit. the user will need to supply there own.

That is 100% correct. Refer to the parts numbers I listed above to get everyingthing you need. Rally Sport Direct was a huge help and I highly recommend them.

Okay just finished install of the Cusco bar and diffuser on my 04 Wagon. I'll post pics soon. Had to wrestle with the bar a little bit, but it does fit and it a really nice piece of hardware. This is high quality stuff. Rally Sport Direct was dead on and got me everything I needed. I did have to supply two bolts for the bumper bracket, but that was it. The fit is OE and I highly recommend this if you want some extra strength in the rear and the diffuser to sit at the right height.

Just as an FYI... The "rear diffuser" and "roof spoiler" DO make a difference, but only at "track speeds". They work together with the dual plane spoiler to create negative lift on the rear of the car.
The reason these two components exist on the 06 STi is so that they can be used in "super stock" rally racing

Well I went to install the rear diffuser (got the side pieces installed this weekend :))- I was under the assumption the bracket at the rear was a bolt on? My 04 wagon doesn't have any holes to mount it unless I'm in the wrong spot (don't think so). Does that piece need two holes drilled?
I have to get the rear orientated correctly before I attempt to tack on the three oe brackets.
TIA

Yeah, you have to drill two holes for the rear bracket but its pretty easy.

OK- good. For some reason I didn't pick that up- thought the rear bracket was a bolt on (until I could find noting to bolt it to :) )
Thanks

iirc if you want it to be a bolt on w/out drilling you'll need that cusco brace. someone correct me if i'm wrong please.

J*Bishop is right, Mike. If you don't want to drill, you'll need the Cusco bar (673 487 A) and brackets (672 487 S) seen here: http://www.cuscoracing.com/0511-3.html

God bless,

PS-The Ferodo DS2500's held up pretty well at Buttonwillow Raceway! I wonder how the DS3000's would've worked!

you still need to drill even w/ the Cusco bar (maybe not on a 06?)- the rearward bracket- which can be seen in the pic above (barely) needs to two holes drilled into the seam/lip.
glad the 2500's worked, the 3000's will bite even more :)

My 2004 STi had the appropriate holes already present in the rear pinch seam. No drilling required. I did have to supply my own bolt hardware however.

Interesting- I guess it's going to vary by MY and model.
My 04 WRX wagon definitely no holes.

Say would it be too much trouble to post a pic of where the holes are located- I may as well get them in the exact spot intended :)
