Finally in, 06 diffuser part 8

BIGSKYWRX 11-30-2006 09:30 AM

Yeah the piece is very light, four bolts is plenty. I've had miine up to 130mph numerous times (we have a longish back straight at the track I run) w/o issue.

You may possibly pack some dirt in on the rear duffuser rallyxing, the side pieces should be fine as they are pretty snug up against the chassis (very fine dirt may find its way in). The rear diffuser comes of w/ just four bolts (or five :)) so you could always reomve it for dirt work.
o2sys 02-21-2007 12:53 PM

Are there pre-drilled holes on the rear bumper beam so the part # 91285D brakcet bolts on?
BIGSKYWRX 02-21-2007 02:37 PM

yup pre-drilled/threaded :)
palpullero 02-22-2007 08:46 PM
umm, nope. the floor pan is not aluminum. its all steel, so welding it is faily easy. Even so, i still chose to bolt mine on also, as i didnt want to mess with the undercoating.
Nah, it's aluminum (just tapping on it tells you). Either way, bolts are better. I chose to put 4 per bracket, stainless steel. If it's indeed steel, my apologies.
Are there pre-drilled holes on the rear bumper beam so the part # 91285D brakcet bolts on?
On the '05 STi it matches entirely. On an '04 STi, you have to drill on the bumper bracket.
USCTrojan4JC 02-22-2007 09:03 PM

I have a 91285D I need to get rid of because I bought the CUSCO rear support bar and mounting kit. Anyone interested? I'll sell it for the same cost I bought it from Subie Gal for and won't charge any shipping.

chimchimm5 02-23-2007 02:10 AM

Let me ask this, let's say I had $300 to spend and I want the diffuser.

Which probably is the better bang for the buck?

A) diffuser, brackets, and a front H-brace
B) diffuser and Cusco rear subframe brace

there's no way subaru would make that part of the underbody from aluminum.

NOnonononon I have the sway bars (both) already!!! I'm on to the diffuser now.
Handsdown 02-23-2007 04:21 AM

in that case, front brace.

Ok, i've read through the first half of this thread, and searched...I see lots of posts asking about 05 and down cars but...

What If i want this 06 STI rear diffuser on my 06 WRX??

I already had to run back inside the dealership for the rear bracket, but i don't see how it bolts to the front
BIGSKYWRX 05-11-2007 08:08 PM

same choices all WRX's have- get the three oe brackets and weld or drill OR use the Cusco brace

pm me if you go the bracket route- I've got three new ones (I ended going the Cusco brace route)
Mulletmaster 05-11-2007 08:59 PM

Ah i see the deal..

haha..Honestly, if you sold me this diffuser (that i bought) for 300 dollars, i'd probably do a really nice job installing it....however...

This is a 60 dollar piece of plastic...im not cutting or welding or drilling anything for 60 dollars...pass the zip strips for the front please..

Curse Subaru, curse them for always going far out of their way to make sure no parts can be exchanged..
skydes 05-11-2007 10:22 PM

man you got a lift in your garage?!?!?
Mulletmaster 05-12-2007 12:45 AM

Yes...?
Paranoid Fabrications 05-12-2007 12:52 AM

go with the backets. here they are on my 06. just drill and bolt. super easy.

Thanks
Shane

i am looking at getting this diffuser for my car i have an 06 if i dont want to get the brackets and drill holes can i just get the rear bar that has the bracket on it and attach the front of the diffuser to the rear bumper and the back of the diffuser to the bar? I am kinda confused. I want this piece but i also want to make sure I get all the parts that I needed.
BIGSKYWRX 05-12-2007 10:22 AM

there are only two options that I'm aware of- the Cusco bar (ties the two swaybart mounts together) which includes mounting front/rear or going w/ the oe brackets- one for the rear (bolt on) and the three brackets shown above- which can be drilled/bolted or welded.

Option one is more expensive, option two less.
Mulletmaster 05-12-2007 10:30 AM

Another issue i may have (and i won't know til i know where exactly the thing goes) but the back corner of the diffuser seems really close to wear my SPT exhaust curves away from the diff to head back to the drivers side of the car...
BIGSKYWRX 05-12-2007 10:43 AM

My muffler (ScoobySport) is close, but not close enough to be a problem- it's very possible there are mufflers that would be problematic w/ the diffuser, but it's also something that could possibly be handled w/ a little modification of the diffuser
shortyswrx 06-30-2007 08:11 PM

is this everything i need in order to put this on my 06 wrx? anything else maybe i'm missing??

https://www.subarugenuineparts.com/product_info.php?products_id=1065
BIGSKYWRX 06-30-2007 08:25 PM

that's it- you'll either need to weld or drill/bolt in the three brackets
shortyswrx 07-01-2007 12:51 AM

^^ thanx!
powerlabs 07-01-2007 12:30 PM

Just gone mine in!
Spent an hour installing mine yesterday. I used the OEM brackets and held them in place with sheet metal screws. Monday I will have a welder tack it on, then I will spray everything with some undercarriage protection and bolt it back on.

I'm really happy with it. Pictures to follow.
BIGSKYWRX 07-01-2007 02:01 PM

good idea w/ sheet metal screws :) someone should make a template- I imagine it isn't easy getting all three brackets to line up perfectly
evoeater8 07-02-2007 12:05 AM

And I'm sure if we all had either $495 or $695 to spare, we'd all get that one too. $80 sounds great to me!;)
trex616 07-02-2007 02:52 AM

im actually greatly considering making my own fiberglass replica of the APR. i cant imagine it would be too hard to make. and with the proper measurements and applied effort, i believe it could turn out quite nice once painted. the thing is i really want a diffuser like the apr, which covers the entire rear bumper, rather than the 06, which is only a small section in the center. additionally, i cant justify putting anything made of cf on the bottom of my car, as i know i will enevitably destroy it. and well, 500 bucks for glorified plastic is bogus. any thoughts on idea? constructive criticism is greatly appreciated.
ATK 07-02-2007 03:12 AM

^^^Along the lines of your idea......It probably doesn't even have to look that good since it will be mostly under the car. Just need to make sure the fin thingys are straight and you're good to go.

Has any one ever thought of attaching like 2-3 stock diffusers together?.....
trex616 07-02-2007 03:14 PM

yeah the more i think about it the more i want to try it. worst case, it sucks and im out a couple bucks worth of fiberglass and a few hours in the garage. im going to start a thread about it now
powerlabs 07-02-2007 06:22 PM
good idea w/ sheet metal screws :) someone should make a template- I imagine it isn't easy getting all three brackets to line up perfectly
1- Bolt the rear bracket to the diffuser (the long one that screws into the sheetmetal by the bumper.
2- Mark the hole locations
3- Drill Holes, bolt bracket on with diffuser in it.
4- Mark where the holes in the diffuser go on the trunk
5- Line up the 3 OEM brackets with the holes you marked and draw their outline.

Now you can use sheetmetal screws, tack weld it, etc etc... That's how I did it and it really wasn't very hard...
I want one too... not for downforce, but to reduce lift and drag for better mpg, and smoother airflow (less noise)... EVEN IF IT'S JUST A LITTLE. (aka... hobby mod)
I am curious about this too. I dotn feel there will be much of a performance advantage for a mostly street driven car; Has anyone with the stock piece installed notice any difference in mpg's?
BIGSKYWRX 04-24-2008 09:38 AM

I have, but also have the side aero under pieces as well as the tranny aero piece (jdm part only) in addition to the diffuser- I've seen a solid 1-2 mpg increase (this is at 80 mph-Interstate speeds). This has been documented over the course of one year +.

bigsky.. thanks a lot for your knowledge! thats exactly what i wanted to hear. 1-2 is better than i thought. I didnt even know about the other aero bits, but i found them in another thread. I think im going to try it out.

thanks again
nathansvt 04-24-2008 12:26 PM

I've had the diffuser on for more than a year and haven't seen much of a difference so I think the increase, if any, is coming from the side covers or the tranny cover. Do you have part numbers or links where I can find these items?
Paranoid Fabrications 04-24-2008 12:50 PM

i think the big difference comes from the side pieces. i know when i installed them all on my car i also got a jump in MPG and car felt more "sucked" down to the ground.
you can pick them up from SGP vendor on here.
chimchimm5 04-24-2008 01:08 PM

Good info!

Although, I haven't done this mod because I don't get much freeway speeds (due to traffic).

I'm not surprised that the side pieces have more effect because they have a much larger surface area. The diffuser is relatively small, with very short fins... which leads me to believe that its effect is not very pronounced. On top of that, it doesn't extend very far under the car to try and create a continuous "smooth bottom".
SpecialK 06-17-2008 02:17 AM

Has anyone tried installing the 06 rear diffuser on an 02 wrx? Is this possible with the Cusco brackets? Seems like most of you are adding it to year 04 and beyond subies. My 02 rear diffuser was damaged when I was rear ended and my insurance will reimburse for parts and labor. Curious how the 06 diffuser would look on an 02 with rear underspoilers.
If anyone has done this, pics would be appreciated.

true. the drilling however, is very easy to do. The undercarriage (aluminum?) is really easy to drill through!

oh really....... :D

hmmm i don't feel like reading 19 pages..

care to explain?? :)
BIGSKYWRX 07-05-2008 10:55 PM

you can purchase the Cusco kit brace kit (brace that runs between the sway bar mounts) and it makes it a bolt up OR you can drill/bolt or weld the oe brackets underneath the tire well

the bumper is never removed in either operation
96accord 07-05-2008 10:57 PM

^^ thanks!! :D
berny227 07-06-2008 12:06 AM

for the record...i bolted mine using:

no brackets
no brace

drilled strait into the trunk..used washers with a bolt and nut combo. worked great for me.
