Re-painted my stockers black. Came out pretty good I think. These are my winter wheels with new blizzaks rubber on them.
PS: Just put my JDM STI scoop on there yesterday. Sorry for the bad pictures, it was getting late and as you can see, started snowing.

Bumping this as it seems like the best place to ask my questions:
I am planning to use Dupli-Color's graphite wheel paint and clearcoat. I noticed no mention of primer on their site so I called them to confirm. Sure enough they told me not to use a primer, that this paint was designed to be applied directly to "aluminium or metal in good condition". I was pretty surprised by that. I will scuff the wheels either way, but definitely do not want to introduce a primier if it isn't called for.
They also warned that the respray window for this paint is just one hour, and I can spray the clearcoat on during that window. I'm going to have to save this project until the spring as it's just too cold to be painting right now.
Thoughts?

You might want to test the clearcoat on one small spot before you go gung ho and spray it on the whole wheel. I had issues when I tried to spray it within the hour as the can recommended, and then I had the same problem after I waited 24 hours (misread the can, which actually said to respray with one hour or to wait 48 hours)
I went without clearcoat since I was crunched for time (it kept snowing and my snow tires really needed to go on the car ASAP), and the wheels still look plenty shiny after 3 weeks. I kinda goofed, so my tip is to do a spot check. Hope this helps.

Black Rustoleum and blue Duplicolor Engine Enamel on top of Rustoleum dark grey automotive primer. Did the painting with the tires mounted but not seated so the tire wasn't pressing against the rim.

What kind of issues did you have with the clearcoat? Dupli-color confirmed that I should do multiple basecoats and clearcoat within the same one hour window, but I could see that being a problem. If not the same window they recommended waiting at least five days prior to adding more paint.

Hard to see, but in the bright spot, you might be able to see the weird puckered texture. The black paint was smooth before I laid down a thin coat of clearcoat, but after 5 minutes, it puckered up like this. Like I said in my previous post, I goofed, so this may have only happened because I didn't wait long enough...but this also happened when I tried to do clear within the same hour. I waited for the other stuff to dry for another day, wetsanded lightly, then recoated with more black to correct it. PITA
Thanks! :)

Thanks, that's exactly what I want to avoid, definitely a PITA. Did you use Dupli-color clear? It was strongly recommended to me not to mix brands, so some of your lifting may be related to the Rustoleum primer?

It happened with Duplicolor and I tried Rustoleum's crystal clear on a different wheel, same results. See why I gave up? At least they're only winter wheels, and this was my first time painting.

I used Rustoleum Brass and a few layers of clear coat, looks brighter than gold. from home depot
used free 'Magic' cards I got at a comic book convention to mask off the tires
was taking a photo but got distracted by the best parking job ever

also -- I hardly cleaned the wheels. just removed oil and loose dirt... rustoleum paints right over rust and dirt so oh well - looks great in my opinion (I just didn't remove all the old paint or strip the wheels down to the metal)

I was thinking bout painting my rims bronze, anybody recommend good bronze spray paint?
| starlightluvsu | 08-18-2010 01:55 PM |
decent write up... my suggestion would be instead of doing this: "Next make sure you brush off all of the residue and then start to mask the tires off. " I would do a quick rinse to ensure that all the residue is off the wheels.. but then that also creates the need to dry them off.. but I think its well worth it to avoid having residue creating bumps under the paint.

no i got the stock wrx wheels which are silver, was planning on getting duplicolor bronze...just wondering how many cans would i need to paint all 4 wheels
| amroof | 08-25-2010 11:56 AM |
It all depends on how well you want them to look! When I painted my 18s I used 3 cans of the bronze but that was only on the fronts of the rim. I painted the backs and inside black so that the bronze had more depth when you look at the wheel. They came out awesome. And they look as good as they did when I painted them 6 months ago. So 3 cans for the fronts maybe 4 for the backs too.

Yea i painted the wheels on my first car, (a pontiac grand am) and they came out decent.Duplicolor wheel paint and clear is the way to go. I'd say honestly don't even bother trying to do them outside, there are too many elements like dust dirt and pollen floating around and they can easily get on the paint job and ruin it. the front wheels, which i did inside, came out wayy smoother.

Went the DIY route. Bought duplicolor wheel paint as well as the clear they sell. And heres my experience...
I sanded for hours, masked for a few more, primed, painted,...
I went with their white paint. The color went on fine and that was no issue. So I grabbed my clear and started to spray. Turns out duplicolor doesnt like to advertise that their clear coat will possibly turn the white paint yellow... I stopped immediately and called them when they were open the next day. One of their employees told me that the clear is know for coming out yellow on white. Im sorry but what the hell color paint did I buy? So now I get to start all over but at least its just on the one wheel.
To you veterans out there whats your suggestion to me? I want to clear them but obviously dont want to spray the same product that made my wheel look like it was pissed on

How about not using a clear coat? I have done my wheels 6 or 7 times and I have stopped using clear coat. It usually causes more problems then it's worth. Clear coat is only clear glossy paint anyway.
If you want protection, add more coats of the color. If you want shine, move the spray can closer to the wheel and put the paint on thicker. Just be careful not to put it on to thick otherwise you will get drips.
Hope this helps!
Chris

I have gone 2 years or so including north east winter before needing a repaint.

Wow, well I feel a lot better about this now. Thanks for the confidence boost. I was expecting an answer of less than a year.

It really depends on the paint you use. if you buy cheap paint, don't expect it to last that long ... I have found that the metal bonding paint seems to work pretty good, as well as actual wheel paint. I tried some cheap florecent orange paint last year and it faded to a really ugly yellow/white color in only a few months. It also cracked and chipped more then I expected.
here is a before shot .. It was to embaressing to take an after shot lol

Hey guys i have a question about the wheels i just painted. I spent a ton of time prepping my wheels before i painted on sunday. Anyways i used the duplicolor graphite/clear, let dry all day sunday and had the tires mounted monday night. They messed up a little and marred the paint on a few spokes on each wheel. It says on the can to wait 7days before additional coats beyond the first hour. Has anyone gone in and sprayed additional coats after letting the paint cure? Do i need to re-scuff? Or just wipe down and spray?
