how to become a rally driver part 2

Geek Guy 12-29-2011 11:12 AM
I just ate a lot of Tacos. Tacos are the key to being a top level rally driver. Make sure you have hot sauce too.
I think I need to shoot for a Taco Bell sponsorship.
2005wrxowner1 12-29-2011 02:52 PM

tacos are certainly the key. i would love to do rally. but i cant even get a job right now..
so forget going places. we have the trailer and the diesel truck.. even a rallycross car..
just not the funds needed right now, maybe later someday.
Rich parents
Or this thing called hard work, dedication, and commitment. We build our car with no cash sponsorship, limited discounts, and lots of blood sweat and hard work. Most of us who actually rally, do so almost completely funded by our own pockets. I go to school part time, work 60 hours a week as an exempt employee (no overtime) at a hospital, and have started and run an LLC with two DBA's, one running the team and another doing consulting and digital media as I used to be a action sports photographer.

If there is a will there is a way, and as Jon mentioned, we are always looking to get people hooked in our sport. There are ways into the sport without breaking the bank, for example buying an already built car can save boatloads of $$ as well as letting you concentrate on driving and learning proper technique and how events work. Thats the great thing about rally, its so much more then what happens just on stage. From needing to learn pace notes, how to do recce at some events, how to keep on time and proper check-in check-out procedures, staying on your minute, servicing, etc.

other things that help:

1) don't have babies

2) avoid a girlfriend....or if you have to have one, make sure she's really friggin' cool. bonus points if you can actually meet a girl at a rally event.

3) don't have babies.

4) Rent...or don't buy a house where you can barely afford the mortgage.

5) Whether you buy or build, at least make sure its something you like....I can't imaging spending as much time as I do working on a car that I'm just not really 'into'. (I don't care how cheap and easy JVL says it is....you'll just never see me racing a Volvo)

6) Its RALLY. Its meant to be hard, frustrating, character building, expensive, mentally and physically challenging. The faster you realize that, the more fun you'll have.

Remember: Its all worth it when the Monday after a race, and one of your co-workers asked how your weekend was, and you reply with, "I raced my Mo%@#er Fu@#$ing RALLY CAR. How do you THINK my weekend was?"

7) for the love of god, DON'T have babies.
Back Road Runner 12-29-2011 11:02 PM

Haha UP2MTNS.

Yes, disposable income is necessary, and babies are money sucking vortexes.

Holy thread resurrection. The first post was in 2001, and the OP last logged on in 2002. I wonder if he ever became a rally driver in the past ten years? :)
akuhner 12-30-2011 12:43 AM
Great start, Manny... you've shown that you did a search by bumping an age old thread on something close to (but not exactly) your topic, but you didn't manage to find any of the dozen or so threads where people go into great detail on how to get into rally. Nor did you notice that saying "I LOVE RACING ON THE STREETS" is going to get you flamed around here. I hope you are a better driver than you are an interweb user.... ;)

Haha, good to see my old goal. I still carry that goal, but now the "season or two" of rallies is put off until I finish paying for my daughter's college (she is 9... months old). In the mean time I revised that goal down to buying any old Subaru rally car I could and finishing two rallies. I achieved that goal 3 months before the baby was born and now the car is collecting dust in the garage.

I'm too lazy, can someone else find a couple of the "here's how to get into rally" threads for this guy?

Alex
Quoting myself, having quoted myself - I eventually sold the rally car, having met the goal of finishing two rallies it didn't make sense to keep it around.

The path to driving in a rally starts with two words: get involved.

Come back once you've done that and have some more detailed next step questions - though if those questions aren't being answered by the experience you get or the people you meet, then you are doing it wrong. Rally people are very eager to help get serious people get involved and get behind the wheel, so if you aren't getting that help you are either a) hopeless, or b) not involved long enough yet. After 6 years of volunteering at events, organizing rally crosses, and crewing for a serious team I had all the support I could want to get out there on the cheap.

On the cheap: Covering the crew's hotel & food, right? You can go really crazy and cover the alkeyhaul too. (But you'd have to be loaded to do something like that!!!)

If I am coming from far away I expect for the guy who I am crewing for to at least have a place for me to sleep and food in my belly. It doesn't have to be fancy. Usually some beer is brought along as well.

Or be patient, have babies, wait till they're out of your hair, then your babies can crew and co-drive.

I passed #'s 1,3,5, and 6, however, I do have a question

On #2, do you earn bonus points if they become your codriver, AND randomly you'll come home to rally parts they ordered? She sure does like to spend my money, but wait...whats in the box?!
kartking 12-31-2011 12:30 AM

racing on the track anywhere is better than the street.....

that's like winning the lottery.

Mine crews for me as well :) She also came with her own tow rig! Now all she wants is to codrive in a few TSD's....

Quoting for posterity. This is dead on. Chicks dig race car drivers.

I supply a floor to sleep on, snacks to eat during the event, the "last supper" before the event, and the first round of drinks after. I might be able to make a spot on a stack of tires for you to ride to the event on (if you don't mind the 10 hour drive)...
hcsi99 01-03-2012 10:13 AM

Fort Wayne Region SCCA has Rally Cross.

UP2MTNS 01-03-2012 04:30 PM

I always supply a weekend's worth of snacky food, beers in a cooler (we don't always have time to hit the bars), a floor to sleep on, and at least one dinner. I never run with a big crew though...usually my crew chief and maybe one other guy. My co-driver is good at wrenching also.

Same. Small crew, snacks/beer, and a place to stay along with a real meal or two thrown in.
jakechup 01-05-2012 11:11 PM

Step 1: Become famous at something else (snowboarding, skating, BMX)

Step 2: Win the X-Games a few times make your name well-known so you are more of a money maker

Step 3: Express a slight intrest in subaru

SoA will know what to do from here.
E.g. Shaun White, Ken Block, Travis Pastrana, and Dave Mirra.

:sadbanana:
WhiteoutRally 01-12-2012 07:13 PM

^ Or you could just work hard and get into the sport like the rest of us do. Wow you named 3 famous people that put their own money and branding into become rally drivers, and were successful at it. Way to leave out the 20-50 other entries that are at every event.

You could always take my route:
1 have baby with girlfriend, althou generally seen as a mistake it makes her feel secure so when you say you wanna start rally she is more on board

2 get a better job to fund rally car

3 propose to girlfriend

4 girlfriend decides this is fuggin sweet and decides to learn to co-drive, rally now becomes a bonding family expierence which means you no longer have to do the boring bonding stuff leaving more time for rally

5 get a better job to further fund rally car

Step 6 repeat step 5 as many times as possible

I have completed 1 thru 4 so far lol
sureshot007 03-13-2012 12:08 PM

Baby = bad. They eat all of your disposable income. Unless, of course, you are rich...in which case you don't need our advice.

Depends how impatient you are. Baby provides (eventual) crew and co-driver (plus other non rally related pleasures).
