A friend of mine is co-driving an SRT-4; they came in first in the 'economy' class last year and 20th overall. Behind a few subaru's, though. :-)
Pictures and movies will be available here, with new ones uploaded daily:

I looked at the videos of the SRT-8...looks pretty neat, but what's most impressive are the intake runners on the motor. Looks really awesome. Most of the time companies want to hide stuff like that under a piece of flat black plastic. :(

Wow, didn't know Eric was driving the SRT8. That thing is going to embarass some light sports cars ;)

heidi ho. greetings from south bend. i forgot my wire to connect the camera to the computer, so i'll have to post all my sweeet pics after the event. some sick cars. high quality cars like i've never seen before. too many to go into right now. ok i'll pick 3.
GT40 - about a half inch off ground, velocity stacks sticking out the back, well worn (lot's o track time), i think it's a superformance, loud and mean.
NSX-R - a pair w/ mostly carbon bodies, roof scoops, nitrous, loaded w/ fans, underbody kits w/ splitters, reported 700hp+ at the wheels.
Race Cars - the Ultima, Radical and S2K are all rad. the Ultima is the most practical. the radical has a home made windscrenn enclosure thingy. the S2K is completely open w/ zero storage room. all 3 will be extremely fast if they hold up and the drivers hold up.
Subarus - The DynoComp STi looks well put together, very attractive. The other STi is stock and appears to be driven by 2 women. The WRX is driven by Greg Hagopian, who has lots o experience at all the tracks and is always very fast. He came in 10th in a stockish ford probe gt a few years back. His experience could put him ahead of all the STi's.
Two EVO's one stockish, one is Jons freak mobile. Very Very nice car, every trick in the world and 285 tires on all 4 corners. Could be a contender for top spot.
As usual, hordes of massive hp corvettes, porsches and vipers.
That's all, I need sleep. Doug and Porter helped me with some last minute preparation last night. Top Speed is a very nice shop and the guys that work there are great. They helped me out til 9pm then went to work on another customer's car. That's dedication. But unfortunately, we had to drive all night and got to south bend at 8am, just in time to apply stickers all day. I've gone 40 hours w/ no sleep.

Looks like they have the results from the first day up there, the wet skidpad.
Luke was 9th overall and the other STI 13th but behind a SRT-4 and a...Crown Victoria in their class. Jon's EVO was 29th. Dyno-Comp STI was 62nd, not sure what happened there.
I remember last year the Vishnu EVO did so poorly in the wet skidpad (due to the differentials) that they only came back on the very last day to win the class, after consistently beating everyone by quite a bit on every track.

Thats only part 1 of the first day. They did 2 trials at IRP as well. Results should be up from that shortly. Jon K. was 7th in the first one after blowing the radiator. They were replacing that when I talked to him on the phone inbetween sessions.

Another update from Jon. They recovered with the radiator and finished the next session well. Luke is apparently flying in the STi and one of the blue STis went bye bye into a tire wall at IRP.

Luke is flying.
If I drive my Evo that well I should be winning every event by 10 seconds.
If i do perfect in every event he will still be tough to catch.
First IRP we banged the turbo into the new thick radiator, had to replace it. 2nd time trial i was going very well, and the ABS decied to say "f-You" and not work at about 157 mph. I was happy to keep it out of the wall.

Wow Luke is still kicking a lot of ass, 5th in both time trials today. I imagine the AMS EVO is suffering from mechanical problems as they were pretty far off the pace.
Funny seeing Jerry Onks and Danny Popp leading since they are two autocross guys. Not that they don't have a lot of road course experience and know how to drive Corvettes well...

Looks like Luke is still kicking some ass in his STi. Jon K was a little off the pace today with a 8th and 15th finish. I wonder if they are still chasing gremlins in the car like the last few days.
Luke is in a solid 5th overall and knocking on 4th. He's finished 5th in the last 4 out of the last 5 and 3rd in that other one. Good damn driving man!
Anyone know Luke's cell #?

the gt40 blew its headgasket (from what i heard, talking to some of the competitors yesterday)
didnt see it yesterday at all, just its rear body section laying in the grass, from about 1pm till 4pm
the red nsx with the bronze volk se37k's is mean!!
im guessing its super charged only got to hear drive by me on the way out of beaverun
because my friends are unrealiable buttholes i missed all of these cars on the track because we showed up like 45 minutes late on the 2nd run group
srt-8
gt40(not sure if it made it to its 2nd run)
the ram 1500 wide body
both nsx's
ams evo
both lead corvettes and porshes
and the red daytona
highlights of the day were talking to the owners of the ultima(who didnt really seem to push the car all that hard) and the blue daytone
as well as seeing the black SS lock up all 4 tires for about 75 feet and getting sideways going into turn 1

The GT40 blew some kind of intake manifold gasket, according to the guy who was driving it.
Both of the NSXs in the competition are supercharged.
Luke is in pretty much the same position the Vishnu EVO was in last year, solid 5th with 4 cars ahead that are just very good. They came in 5th at almsot every time trial last year. Unlike them though, he isn't playing catch-up and has a pretty good lead in his class. I wouldn't back off much, but I don't think going for an overall win is realistic with the cars in front of him.

I spent the day @ NHIS today with the One Lappers (sorely missing my non-participation, grrrr!).
Luke is a friggin' animal in that car! He was definitely one of the faster cars out there.
The AMS Evo dumped coolant at the entrance to t3, which put the Radical into the tire barrier. As I was leaving the track, the radical was patched up and en-route.
The Dynocomp STI suffered another off today, taking out the driver side of their front bumper. Their bumper is now in the front seat of my STI, and my front bumper is now on their STI :D If I can't run the race, part of my car is gonna do it for me! I think Enrique is taking over driver duties, however. The car is also wicked fast!
Ron put some smack down in the Ram, and the turbo Viper looked fast also. A couple local guys really upped the pace and finished well, also, since this track is tough to get down with just one recon lap. It looks like the red Daytona broke something, sounded like a rod... it DNF'ed the second session. The track stayed dry until everyone was done, thankfully.
Other notables: Fitz is a fat bastard. Luke looks like a crazy man with that open face helmet; seriously, he looks like Brad Pitt from 12 Monkeys when he was getting all psycho in the lounge. :lol

Hired? Paul was a friendly customer (and evo owner) who just happened to be one hell of a driver... and one that didn't mind spending a week in a car with me :D
This years entry wasn't done in time so we couldn't be there battling it out with Luke and the rest of the One Lappers. We'll be running our car (a Subaru, of course) in this years C&D Supercar shootout instead.
Also, Luke was instrumental in our win last year. Without him, we would have been trailorless. And without the trailor, we wouldn't have had tools or racegas!!
cheers.

i dont know a whole lot about those kinds of engines
but this cloud was caused by coolant being dumped into 1 or more of the cylinders

Is that at the Beave? If it is, that track REALLY doesn't like GT-40s. 2 real ones broke at the Vintage Grand Prix kick off races last year.

The gasket was busted today I think, and that pic was from yesterday. He sounded awful in the AM session but was ripping in the PM.
| paultg | 05-02-2005 08:16 PM |
Not sure about the engine design, but most intake manifolds have coolant paths and air paths to the heads. Since the GT40 is supercharged, I think the coolant at the intake manifold is used to cool the intake charge. I believe the Cobra mustangs also have a similar design, coolant is run through the lower portion of the intake.
So, just like my 72 Olds intake manifold gasket that went, coolant can dump right into the cylinders and create a spy hunter effect. I thought my head gaskets were gone, but it was the intake. With a supercharged application, the excess pressure makes the gaskets work even harder.
Of couse, I could be totally wrong.
Paul G.

To bear the stresses necessary to produce 500 horsepower, Coletti used a forged steel crankshaft, shot-peened H-beam connecting rods from Manley, and forged aluminum pistons from Karl Schmidt Unisia. The engine uses a modified Roots-type supercharger from Eaton with an intercooled intake.
I believe the intake is water cooled via engine coolant

and if the car was running today as ryanc said
they may have fixed the head gasket just to have the intake manifold gasket go bad today
it never even made it to its 2nd points round
1st this a gt40 replica using a Ford 351 Windsor V-8 stroked to to 383ci
not a new ford gt
so this doesnt apply

Talked to both Luke and Jon tonight. The EVO is back after blowing out two of the coolant plugs out of the block after overboosting to 35+ psi. Speaks a lot about the block that they built that it didn't blow anything else or the headgasket up! They were both on the way to Summit to run the new Shenandoah circuit. They will be the first "competition" there with only a few other people running the circuit before them. I'm jealous! Good luck.
And without the trailor, we wouldn't have had tools or racegas!!
cheers.
shiv
Het Shiv .... good to see you are still up and kicking ...... I was surprised not to see you out here this year :( .... that little trailor is still being dragged around by the C5 .... (bearings still haven't died as we expected). Brian Smith and I were talking about you and Paul before the start of the Skid pad on Saturday and it brought us all a good laugh. :D

Just got some bad news from One Lap. Luke crashed at Summit Point today. He's ok and wasn't hurt so thats good news. But the car ain't looking to good from what I've heard. FMIC, radiator damage with the front suspension looking ugly and one the rear shocks bent up. There are a bunch of people trying to help him out and get the car back together, so hopefully he'll be back on the track soon!

Terrible news. I don't think you can take the car and fix it up to be competitive after that. I saw the Firestone STI crash at Road America last year and they patched that car up, but all they had to do was run the skid pad at Tirerack the next day, not do more track events.

Video of crash. Damn those lake effect guys are fast on the updates.
Rear end of the car got airborne coming over the crest and he looks like he couldn't save it in the braking zone for the next turn. Watching the video, he was very lucky to come out of that unscathed.

Luke has real skill to get out that no worse than he did! I'm pretty sure I would have shat myself, a couple of times.
Dale and I have located some parts for him if he ends up needing them. Hopefully we can see him back on the track for the rest of this event. :)

Damn.... good job to Luke saving the car so well; that's a bad place to get loose. Did he have seat time at this track prior to One Lap? That's flat out 5th gear cresting the hill in my stockish-STI, so he must have been doing 110+. I hope he makes it back on track!

Yikes. You have to hit that pretty close to dead on to avoid getting loose like Luke did. Oh well, it's still early in the event. If he can get back and miss just tomorrow he can still finish pretty well overall.
