Invitation to Rally part 2

SmoothSTI 03-31-2007 05:44 PM

You guys are absolutely right. After reading and reflecting on your posts, I have changed my views and now commit to volunteering in AT LEAST 3 different Rally's before I actually start competing. I personally don't feel that this is even enough to capture the true flavor of the competition, but I think it's a reasonable goal for now, and I hope to do even more. In other big news, I now have a fellow that has been a mechanic for a car in the Targa Newfoundland who is local considering a position as crew chief. All in all, people are signing up for this dream, and I'm really excited at the prospect of it being a reality!

Thanks for your guidance this time fellas, I'm also planning to register for the 4 day course at team O'Neil sometime next year. I wish that the school would have a component that would teach me and my navigator to work better together, as I feel that us both being novices could really benefit from proffessional training in that area.

Thanks everyone, and lets keep this thread going!

Sincerely,

Daryn

To learn proper driver-codriver coordination, run local TSD and gimmick rallies together. Very low cost, can be lots of fun. Will teach you the basics of rally. Very important to learn transit navigation even if you learn every thing possible about driving at Tim's school.

Did I say local events are low cost? No special car required.
moodyracing 04-01-2007 05:47 PM

Team O'Neil does offer a Team Building course in addition to the rally school, that is for the driver and co-driver to work on their skills:devil:
SmoothSTI 04-02-2007 11:54 AM

New events:

Navigator is open to doing some TSD's, looking into events to volunteer at, and we are looking at a parts/tools truck that is fully enclosed that we think will work in conjunction to the truck/trailer. I think that would complete the physical equipment part (short of locking down tools and a rally car) so that is a definite relief! I was just wondering if anyone out there knows the difficulty in getting a built rally car accross the border into Canada? I have heard the horror stories regarding getting the American cheap ass STI's accross (you lucky bastards ;) ) but I'm hoping that it's an easier ordeal with a purpose built race car (not holding my breath here). Can anyone give me any info regarding that?

Thanks,

Daryn

Go ask this question on Special Stage after doing a search. It has been answered there many times.
Start with this advice:

A) Stop mentioning Landmark to anyone
Agreed!!!

The last thing the rally community needs is Werner Erhard products...(Landmark or Est)

To succeed in rally one needs money and a supportive wife. Find both and you'll be on your way.

Cheers!

And that's just to rally locally and nationally.

To succeed at the WRC you need to be more talented and committed that all of the North American drivers currently competing and you have to be prepared to move to Europe (at least for part of the year).

Don't I know it! Last year I had both, so I rallied - this year I have just one of those things, so I sit at home with her while she tries to tell me who won the WRC events before I watch the show! :D
SmoothSTI 04-07-2007 07:49 PM

Hey everyone, I'm currently doing a heavy search for a FWD rally car! If anyone knows of any in North America for sale, can you PLEASE let me know? It would be so GREATLY appreciated!

Thanks,

Daryn

I'd recommend doing some local rally crosses, and build up skills for a few years. Enter in every possible local competition, use every chance to drive and have fun. Live and Breath it and your chances are that much better. The guys who make the best drivers are the guys that love the sport more than anything. The guys that make the most popular drivers come from motocross and get big name sponsorships because they are already known. Solberg vs. Pastrana would settle that in the first stage.
RichardM 04-08-2007 07:15 PM

Daryn,
Have you been to Specialstage.com yet? Not all rally cars are Subarus. Motivation is nothing if not backed up by intelligent action.
Richard
SmoothSTI 04-09-2007 01:40 AM

Done specialstage.com and rallyclassifieds. Not ONE FWD car for sale on either :( I have to start in a FWD, and there are a few people looking for them. I have some people looking into it up here in Canada, but don't really know anyone who's connected who might know someone stateside. Thanks for the advice, I've teamed up with another group here in Manitoba who are in central region Rally America, and I'm very confident this is going to be a reality for me! If I could just jump in a subaru, I would grab the best RS I can find and start there, but truthfully, I think it's better for me to go FWD and take it easy with small HP for a while. I have given this a lot of thought, and I'm dead set on following through with this goal! A nice volkswagon would do the trick! I have given myself until the end of the year, but since it's a hard search, I think finding one ASAP will be very beneficial for me now.

Thanks Richard and everyone else, if you can keep your ears to the ground, I'd be very grateful!

Daryn

P.S. I will be doing rallyX for the next 2 years before I compete in rally. I just would rather have the rally car available for year 2 rather than using the STi.
rallydriverosix 04-09-2007 01:47 AM

what ever happened to posts that are short and sweet and get to the point. I miss those. Dude just say u wanna rally and then state your question. Fluffing it up with with stuff is just annoying
RichardM 04-09-2007 08:25 AM

How about this as a starting place: http://www.specialstage.com/classifieds/showproduct.php?product=323&cat=13

And remember, you do not have to start with a FWD car. There were also a pair of Fieros listed. They are G2 cars.
SmoothSTI 04-09-2007 10:11 AM

I've looked at the GTI on there which is a RallyX car. Kind of heavily modded, plus costs for Stage Rally prep are high. Overall not an ideal package, but might be something to consider if times get tough. Ultimately I want to stay in P2 FWD. Maybe I'm asking too much, given the current market, but my gut says "go there" so I'm gonna stick with it. Worst case, I'll buy a cheap FWD and go prep it myself..... Hope I don't gotta do that......
RichardM 04-09-2007 10:24 AM

Also, Ben's rally page is still active I think. And yes, VW is what I generally recommend as a starting car.
Porsche914boxer4 04-09-2007 11:55 AM

god, who cares. buy a car and rally it. do we need this thread?
rallydriverosix 04-12-2007 02:13 PM

how hard would it to be to start in a 2002 WRX?
Porsche914boxer4 04-12-2007 03:56 PM

$$$$$$$$$$$
RichardM 04-12-2007 04:24 PM

And rules.
OBShahn 04-12-2007 04:27 PM
And rules.
Rules can be gotten around.

Rally School, plus NASA/CARS events gets you around the RA nOOb requirement.

$$$$$$ and the cost of writing off a car you just spent $$$$$$$$ on when you have your nOOb wreck are better reasons IMO.

Start in a car you can afford to race, and crash, especially in the PNW where there are lots of rallies...
akuhner 04-12-2007 09:53 PM
how hard would it to be to start in a 2002 WRX?
I think it's one of those "if you have to ask, you can't..." things.
SmoothSTI 04-13-2007 01:45 AM

I could "ask" or should I say "beg" Rally-America to let me start in a 4WD class and use a rex (more likely I'd start in lower powered RS/TS) but it's more cost to maintain, plus I want to go slower to start and find the limits before I go bareling into a tree haha. I'm in no rush to be amazing, I need to learn the ropes.
Howl 04-13-2007 09:57 AM

What you need to do is get out to events, meet people, learn the ropes and see what other people are doing. We can't possibly know enough about your specific situation to answer all of your questions.
RB5 Clone 04-13-2007 11:14 AM

there's a terrible disease that often strikes ppl trying to get started in rally

it's called "anaylysis paralysis" and it keeps you wrapped up in an internal dialog (what car? what prep? what class? what yada yada?) at the expense of ever actually DOING anything.

go to to rallies. work. service crew. work tech (excellent way to see what others have done to prep cars). codrive. rallyx. THEN worry about what car to buy/build/drive once you know enough to make informed decisions. anything other than that, you're wasting your own time and $$$. and believe me, getting started in rally takes more of both than you have any idea about! ;)

SmoothSTI 04-13-2007 11:25 AM

I'm not overly worried about the analysis, I know what car, I know what class, I'm going to events before I start, and I'm doing RallyX. The only thing I don't have setup is being a co-driver, but from what the other guys here that are doing this are saying is just go do it haha, I love that way of looking at it ;)
Protege Menace 04-13-2007 06:37 PM

After having spectated 1 pro rally, and then marshalling for another 2 rallies and being hooked, I jumped in head first and bought a helmet and suit with the intentions of co-driving until I could afford actually driving.

That was 4 years ago and I still have never touched the gas pedal of a rally car :X BUT i've gotten an asston of experience, and swapping seats will be a lot easier IMO.

I vote be a codriver for a year while you are building (or buying a used) car and other equipment.
fliz 02-08-2008 01:03 PM

Daryn, I see you're entered at 100AW.

Congrats on getting this far.

What are you running?

Hope to see you in a few weeks.

congrats! It's refreshing to see immediate progress like you've made.

We are also entered at 100AW. Car #110, silver 06 STI from Maine.

Be happy to help any way we can--info, advice, etc.

Hey guys, thanks for your support! Can't believe we made it and got through it! Definitely need more sleep, better food, and a finished car before we go off to Mahnoman.... But I've been bit HARD by the rally bug, and no worries, we'll get that roll damage buffed out in no time! (it actually was a good excuse to get the HEAVILY bondo'd panels off and some good stuff on now haha)

Congrats to both of you on your race!
RB5 Clone 02-26-2008 05:02 PM

Hey! I remember seeing your Golf somewhere along the line at 100AW , I just didn't connect the name with this thread.

Wha happened Friday nite?

Rolled to DNF?
RichardM 02-27-2008 12:02 PM

Missed you at 100AW, which may be a good thing as the Mustang is heavy and was going where it wanted to. See you in Mahnoman.
