I have to admit the pics helped me out also. It is a great mod and props to the Op for coming up with this. It is so much better of a connection to the car. You should sell the idea / clip design to Yakima.

I just took my rack off today. School is gonna have to take precedence over the rest of the season. So, in response to PMs, I took some pictures of the Thule tower clips that I cut up to make this work for me. This one's ugly, but it works and I am sure someone can do it better. Thanks again, Jsavage, this is a great modification.

I think it was a 233 fit kit, but I don't remember for sure and I can't find the paper work. Go look it up at www.Thule.com by application to be sure. Whatever the case, I had two clip kits, a 233 and something else, and the clips were the same part, the only difference being the pads.

I've been trying to install my Yakima stuff along with bike racks a for a while now. Didn't like how it was securing on my WRX. This way looks way better like all of the others have said. Pardon my ignorance here since I haven't removed the black weather stripping yet, but are there four of the rivet point beneath the stripping? Meaning two up front and two in the rear?

OK, I wanted to make sure as none of the pics I saw clearly showed there were any in the rear, although I saw that the Q-towers were connected.
Going to order the Q7 clips today. And out of curiosity: Were these rivots made for this purpose or are they beneath the stripping strictly for those black clips?
Do any of you get wind noise on the freeway with the Yakima stuff? Even with the fairing?

so i did some searching and found the cars that the Q7 clips fit onto. And also whatfit kit Thule had for these cars to see if they were the same.
88-91 Honda CRX --> Thule 77 fit kit
03-05 Kia Sorento --> Not Available
04-05 Scion xA --> Not Available
90-94 VW Corrado --> Thule 94 Fit Kit
I even called a rack place and the guy couldn't understand what i was asking for when i tried to get a cross reference between the two brands.
But if specialev was successful in using the 233 fit kit, then that seems to be the way to go.
Specialev, Do you have a write-up of what you had to do to modify these?

With the rails removed and the rack sitting on the car I measured what I thought was necessary to cut outta the existing clips used to mount the rack the the door frames. Once I had a good measurement, I cut up a clip using a reciprocating saw. I left little tab at one end which I bent over and profiled to fit the towers and the hardpoints in the roof. I made them one at a time carfully fitting them and grinding/cutting as I went.
Not much more to write other than that. It's just a bracket and it's up to you to make it fit right.
You can see an example of a clip that I cut up in my post here (I even put a scale bar in it for ya). Hold up one of your 233s to the screen and see how it deviates from that one. Not a lot of work really. Getting the rails back on is definately more of a PITA.

Did the 233's come with your rack when you bought it? The Thule website shows the kit coming with a 206 fit kit. I searched but could not find the 233. I figure if i mess up i can just order new clips and either start over or just mount them the normal way right?
| wit2003 | 06-01-2006 08:04 PM |
So i did some more research. The 233 Fit Kit is for:
233 95-99 Subaru Legacy 4dr
233 98-99 Subaru SUS 4dr
And the 206 fit kit which comes up on the thule site when i input my vehicle which is an 06TR:
206 95-01 Subaru Impreza 2dr
206 93-06 Subaru Impreza 4dr
206 93-01 Subaru Impreza Wagon
206 02-06 Subaru Impreza WRX 4dr
206 00-04 Subaru Legacy 4dr
206 00-04 Subaru Outback 4dr
So basically i will need to order the 233 fit kit(which i assume is shorter than the 206) and cut, groove, and bend it to fit. And then all should be good......
hope this reference helps some.
I found this info here : http://www.thuleracks.com/thule/vehicle_fitkit_guide.asp

Thats my bad for throwing that wrong number out there, I dunno where I got that. I think I had one sitting around that I sold and it's in a feedback loop in my poor addled brain. You want the 206 clip kit. As I recall though, the only difference between the kits is the rubber block between the roof and the foot of the rack; the clips in the 206 and 233 kits are the same.
Yeah...I looked into this option, but the rack sits sooooo high on the car. And no farring would fit it sitting so high. Two pretty big draw-backs for me. Oh and the fact that it has to be ordered from the other side of the pond.
Woah......talk about a dollar late, dollar short here but.......is jsavage saying that the "suggested" way of mounting the Q-Towers above the windows is higher and that his way(with Q-Clips) mounts lower? If so thats awesome, I would obviously prefer the lower profile and on his STi it appears to be very low and "sleek".
Also if anyone could tell me how this install has held up over time and under various uses/condition that would be great. I just spent quite a pretty penny on a mountain bike and I would die if my bike/board flew off my roof. Thanks in advance!
P.S. anyone have suggestions on which bike carrier is closet to the price/strength sweet spot? i.e. Strong/Durable for a reasonable price.

I have had this mod on my STI since last fall. All winter I had a Roof top box (thule) with at least 4 pairs of skis at all times along with two pairs of poles. No issues whatsoever.

OK, so I can just order the normal old WRX fit kit for the THULE and then I'll be able to mod that to work? The 206 kit, just to be sure? I'm so doing this. I'm so sick of borrowing the wife's MINI to go surfing...
Too bad I sold my bike rack and ski box when I left MT (dodn'[t want to buy racks for my WRX...
Now I need is a whole new rack, fairing, 2 bike trays, a new box, and a lockable surf rack...
Awesome idea and writeup though, thanks!

Been looking into this more and more. I found this "fit kit" for an audi TT:

they have something VERY similar for the VW bug. I wonder if it would work for the WRX's little tabs... I think I'm going to try to go by a dealer tonight and see if they have one in stock to try it on the car. Looks like it will still need a little tweaking, but that it might be a cheaper and less bulky solution for this.

I will. Didn't have time to look last night. Right now I'm trying to buy a thule rack from a few different members here to save some $ on the setup. Once I get a rack, then I'll have to go over to my local THULE dealer and see if the TT or BUG versions will work and if you can adapt them. Looks like they will work very well, but my concern is that on the THULE site the discribe them as a special design to work with the rounded roof of those cars. I'm not sure what that will mean in terms of working on the shape of our roofs. I'm definately going to check it out though as it looks like it's be a lot cleaner setup. If you're starting from scratch with a setup it's a lot cheaper too.
The cost of the Audi TT/VW Bug rack is very close tot he same price as getting everything for the WRX. The only issue I see is that the TT and BUG racks are sold as a set, where as the WRX is sold as towers, bars, and a fit kit... Now sure if we'll be able to buy just the "fit kit" for the TT as I can only find it in the complete kit. This will be an issue if you only want the fit kit, and also if you want different length bars. The bars actually look like they might not be interchangable too... I'll do some homework on this and see what I can dig up.

Well I stopped my "fishing expodition" short for a few reasons:
1) The only local shop with these in stock sucks
2) The charge MSRP with ZERO wiggle room
3) After playing around with my roof, the roof is not as strong where the "feet" end up when you do this custom install. I think it will be fine for what everyone here is doing with their racks. I'm sure the listed 110lbs (or whatever the number is) is OK in that spot on the roof. The issue I found is that the roof is VERY STRONG where that little strip sits, and stronger still as you go tawards the windows, where the stock install ends up... When you look at the flat part of the roof where the feet end up with the custom install, the roof gets weaker and more flexable as you go "in" from the edge. I plan on putting a 140lb boat on the roof with spars so it will be in the 160lb range when I'm done. I didn't want to risk denting my roof, and once you get the clips installed perfectly on the doors there are no issues, so I left them there. For my weight estimates I used my body weight on the empty roof, no racks. I can press the flat roof in with my hand/arm with ~30lbs pressure, but I can hang all my wieght off the edge where the feet go with in the stock possition with zero deflection... So I'd say in the normal spot it's good for at least 200lbs (if not 200x4 really, but at that point I don't trust the rack to hold on, I'm just talking pounds to dent the roof here). In your custom placement I'd say it's 100~120lbs and you're still OK. For me that's not enough so I'm sticking with the normal placement.

You can see on my car in the driveway (top shot above) how the feet sit between the black strip and the windows on an angle. From pushing on that versus the roof you can tell the standard spot is a lot stronger. Try it on your roof. Push down on the flat section inside of the black gutter versus the rounded part between the windows and the black gutter.

I just did the install over last weekend - it went well. I see everyone's concerns about the rain-gutter install with weights - why would there be mounting points if the roof wasn't designed to have a rack installed on those points? I think it will hold up - it may flex a bit but I thik it wouldn't be permanent.
As for the Yakima fairing - now that the feet are shorter, it won't fit. HOw did you get around it? Just drill new holes on the outside portion of the fairing?

Because those mounts are designed for the subaru rack that ONLY attached to that point and DOES NOT touch the roof... When you do the THULE/Yakima custom job, you're altering a rack that is designed to sit on it's "feet" with them on the roof, but you're using mounting points that are designed to take all the weight of the entire system...
Here's how the Yakima feet will sit once you've customized it:

notice how the foot is inside the black strip on the flat part of the roof?
Here is the sedan load carrier that is designed to use those mounts:

notice how there are no feet, and it's only using that mounting point?
Here's my car with the THULEs in the normal spot:

It's sorta hard to see as it's not a detailed shot, but see how the feet are OUTSIDE the gutter on the rounded part of the car between the gutter and the windows? That's much stronger when you try to deflect it with your hand and some pressure.

Gotcha - I understand. Thankfully, I'll only be using it for lighter loads - a bike or snowboard.

so do the towers actually come in contact with the roof? from the pictures, it looks like they are actually suspended above the roof.

The middle picture of the maroon car is the subaru "load carrier". I'm pretty sure that does not touch, but the thule and yakima racks, using the stock OR modified install, both touch the roof.

Got mine installed using this mod. Quite impressed with the look. Cutting and bending the clips was a pain and I just wish they made clips specifically for this installation.

Haha, Hank, you posted these pics in three different threads. Way to cross-reference my friend! :)
2 questions:
is there any flexing or bending of the roof now that the load towers are on the inside of the gutters (on the weak fart of the roof)?
can it be uninstalled and installed again without removing the stripping?
looks really nice.

I have read throught this thread and I am unsure as to how the modified clips are fitted to the riveted points on the roof. Are they sliding underneath? Mounted with screws? Are they mounted similar to the way the euro racks are mounted to these points? One other question. Does anyone who has done this have numbers as to how wide the tab that is left on the clip is? Was it the same on all four points or was it an educated guess and check game. Might help to standardize this mod. Thanks guys!

They do slide and hook underneath. As far as the width, what I did was look at how wide the riveted points were, and then made my first tab that size. After that, I just copied the other three the same size :)

They all slide under the existing mounts that are hidden by the weatherstripping. They are identical in width (about 1.25 inches or so). Once you get the weatherstrip off you will see exactly what needs to be done.

Thanks guys. This should help when I get my rack in a couple days!

I'm covered in dremmel shavings but its going well. I had some old Q? clips from an old integra just hacked them to death and they look just like the modified Q7. They were longer but shortened them then notched them last. So if you have any Q clips you can make it work if you want to.
I highly doubt you could install and reinstall it without removing the stripping...and you'd also amost definetly damage the stripping by trying.
This method is definetly more directed to those who don't take their racks on and off every week or so. Although the stripping is easy to install/uninstall once you get the hang of it.
Is it possible to just take the towers off of the clips? How much would be sticking out from the roof?
Also, to anyone not cutting excess bar off, at least put a small airfoil on it and get some downforce.

Yes, it's possible. Very easy to do actually. It's not aesthetically pleasing, but most definitely doable ;)

Just started my Yakima rack install today. Here's another closeup of the clip modifcation. I gave mine a couple of coats of hi gloss paint. I bent mine on a bench mounted vise (banged it with a small 2x4 and mallet). Made it much easier to bend the tab with a nice straight bend. Can't wait to finish the install. Wanted to give the paint a few hours to fully cure so I'll finish the install tomorrow.

The pieces look good with the paint. I did the same but got impatient and didn't allow the paint to dry :o
Needless to say, the clips went on with fingerprints and tacky paint
