I think all this talk about STI and WRX is pretty ethnocentric, seems like only in the US would you have this kind of argument
the funny thing though, before the STi hit US shores, there were many people trying to make their 2.5rs look like a WRX's and WRX STi's. i didn't see any threads about them being lame or putting WRX stickers on their 2.5rs. i don't know, it must be the ego trip some people get when they have an STi and feel they get degraded when somebody puts an STi sticker/emblem/part on anything other than an STi. they think it's a poser thing to do. i'm sure many would oppose painting an STi bright lime green too. they would say that it's lame and that STi's should only be painted in blue, white, or black.
The thing your missing my friend is.... the key is BEFORE they arrived on our shores..... Again.. this comes back to the tasteless ripping off of a car that already exists here... I will again quote my bmw m3 example.. before the m3s came here there were people that put on kits which made their cars look cool... why? it didn't exist yet. however once, m3s did arrive and people tried to make their gutless 318s into m3 wannabees some by removing all their 3XX emblems or better yet others putting on Fake @$$ m3 symbols that weren't even put on correctly.. now that is Sorry and you can' t tell me its not... back to your 2.5rs .. I have a few friends that have done the exact mod your talking about.. That is GCs that had the version 9 body kits n what not on them. and I think that looks great. why? because we didn't have those cars here yet... however once the GD stis came out here... why would u still make a 2.5 look like an STI? In the End... I t really doesn't matter people can do whatever they feel and they are of course entitled to their opinions. People can contine to make their 2.5s into STi wanna bes. And the general consensus will continue to laugh at these guys who try soo hard to make others think they drive an STi.

i can understand that. so you're saying that if you do it before a certain car/model hits U.S. shores, then it's okay to make replicas of it and that it would be cool? but once it hits the U.S. it's not okay because we got the real thing? just trying to clarify. :) so since the bugeye didn't have an STi version, it would be cool to make a "replica" STi version (as many have done) with everything from the engine to the rear subframe?

why wouldn't you make your 2.5rs look like an STi? it looks cool, especially with the GC body style. there was no GC STi that came to the US, which is why many people still want to make a "replica" model of it. some are going as far as to make it look like the 22b, which in my opinion, is cool.

The wing swap is definitely a good idea, I hope to do the same. STi badges/decals would be kinda ridiculous, everything else is ok but I wouldn't do it.

TypeR stickers
GT-R emblems
and for domestic guys
Hemi stickers
Cuda emblems
GTO emblems
Charger emblems
V8 badges
get it?
Now I would like to have a sort of "kill list" on my trunk of the emblems of every car I've beaten as a trophy rack, but not too many Ferrari or Porsche drivers are willing to wager something so precious.

I kind of get annoyed with this argument.
At first I cringed whenever I saw a WRX with an STi/STI wing, or the sideskirts, or the emblems or fog covers or anything...
Now, I accept it.
Here's why: STi/STI stands for Subaru Technica International. It is the tuning arm of Subaru, or the in-house tuning company for Subaru.
The Impreza is a small car which was created, in essence, to take the place of the Legacy as Subaru's entry vehicle into rallying and the WRC.
As early as the early to mid 1990's STi/STI branded vehicles were the "tuned" or "spiced up" version of Subaru's vehicles.
The WRX is a more performance oriented version of the base Impreza. The "tuned" version of this performance oriented vehicle is labeled the WRX STi/STI. The STi/STI is simply a WRX with performance parts (turbo, intercooler, transmission, certain suspension parts, etc...) made by Subaru Technica International to go on the WRX. This version is due for sale by the manufacturer and is considered by many as at least a better starting point to tuning or modding the car in their own way, which is essentially what an Impreza WRX STi/STI is.
I don't really care if STi/STI parts (the wing immediately comes to mind) are on a WRX or Impreza, because they were developed by Subaru for use on the Impreza. In fact, I think it's kind of cool.
I think that people are too quick to categorize certain things, and simply because the items/parts are found on a certain model, that they only belong on THAT SPECIFIC vehicle.
Ehhh...
I think it's fine. I used to be one of those people, but you've got to stop having little "in-fights" within the Impreza line, i.e. STi/STI owners thinking they're superior to WRX owners, WRX owners thinking they're superior to 2.5i/2.5RS owners...
We're all Imprezas. Mod your own WRX/2.5i/ to make something better than what an STi/STI is (essentially a mildly modded Impreza/WRX).
Or use the STi/STI as a great base for creating an even better Impreza.
Anyway, I don't think it's bad. I think there's too much division in the owners' minds between "WRX" and "STi/STI" and "2.5i/2.5 RS"...
It's alllllllllllll coooooooooool maaaaaaaaaan.

Yes, That is exactly what I'm saying. Kinda like when guys do the whole Civic Type R conversion.. I think that looks pretty awesome... why ? because they're actually trying to turn it into a car that doesn't exist here... inclduing replacing just about everything sometimes even RHD even though i think thats a lil overkill.

I agree with keeping inappropriate badging off of the car. If you don't own the actual car, or haven't done some kind of conversion, don't pretend like it's official.
Now... I don't *hate* it, though. In fact, I even have a couple small, square STi stickers in my interior. Yet I drive an RS. So, I don't know. Paying homage to the company is one thing, but I guess "where to draw the line" is a tough question. Maybe with the exterior stuff, since it's obvious advertisement?
I don't know. :)

The subject at hand is NOT an STi decal here and there, or the wing or rims or even the BBK - it's about tricking people into thinking you've got a USDM STi. Your car is no where near any "line".
God damn there are so many tools on this thread splitting hairs about things we pretty much all agree on. The OP asked how "WE" felt about him creating a USDM STi clone - not a trunk swap or buying BBS wheels. One thing we all agree on - adding a USDM STi bumper or wing is pretty cool. The same with Brembo brakes or BBS wheels. But the one thing most people are NOT addressing is whether it's "cool" to transform a WRX into an STi clone - to the extent that you've gotta check the damn VIN number or peek through the windows looking for the DCCD switch or six speed knob. At some point you've gotta wonder why? The USDM STi is, by far, not the coolest looking car.

i just bought an 07 sti and i am doing the exact opposite. i had the dealer swap the trunk with a wingless wrx. ironically still has all the wrx emblems..... but they are getting removed when i bring it back down to the dealer to have my boost gauge and fog lights put in... i got the options and they didnt have it ready for me :( the plus to it is its urban grey and looks orgasmic. traded in my 05 wrx for it and couldnt be happier... it has 344 miles on it so far and im lowering it today.... cant leave a nice new toy alone

alright well i have a '98 RS w/ STi interior (front, rear, and carpet) and STi Steering wheel. i think it's pretty cool but i'm not going to unstitch the STi from my seat because some ppl say i don't have an STi. I'm debadged. It would be cool to put an STi badge on it but i haven't yet because i don't feel like it is fully an STi. to get to the point i feel if i did the STi engine and tranny swap and if i wanted to i should be "worthy" of doing so.. what would you guys say?

subaru technica international, you can have performance parts on a wrx from them without owning a STi, not much different then buying a cobb exhaust and putting a cobb sticker on your car is it? My wrx stomps on many STi's.
imo, its not lame when you have some performance parts on your car. even if its not STi, atleast u are a subaru enthusiast and support what STi the company is doing. stock wrx's with STi wings and emblems are lame.
I dont have STi emblems on my wrx, nor do i want them. but i think a wrx with upgraded turbo, exhaust, engine management and more is cooler than a STi iwth minor upgrades. personally i would keep wrx emblems only on there.
Nothing like working a STi with my wrx:)
Subaru technica international has taken the wrx and done their version of a true street/rally car. they do a great job. but thats not to say any joe blow off the streets can take a wrx and do the same thing, often making it cooler /better than sti's and do it cheaper.
peace

if you want an sti and you are going to spend the money to transforma WRX completely youd be better off just buying an sti to save the money.
i think its useless but again who cares? i dont see the point after the bugeyes in the US but its what everyone chooses. different strokes but i dont ever plan on putting a hood scoop on my car; a tasteful, subtle, OEM looking heat vent would be all i could manage. as for badging im proud to have the same L AWD badging as the day i bought it. i took off the impreza and subaru a long time ago because of the expectations i couldnt live up to

The STi badge shouldnt be on the trunk/grill unless you have an STi driveline. If you have the full engine/tranny then I say go for it, because I did.

i have a bugeye and im getting ready to do a trunk and wing swap with a sti, im not sure if i will leave the STi badge on or not but guess what i can go faster than a stock STi and if i could of bought a sti when i got the car i probably would have but they were not around then. i have sti parts i can rock the badge just like i rock a K&N and ALPINE badge. i think as long as you have sti parts it should be ok. but dont do it to something bone stock. that would be posing, and if you do thats your choice.

you could have a frickin subaru justy and throw an STI badge on it and that just means your reppin the brand STI..... like a t-shirt

I for one do not think that putting all fo the STi body parts onto a non-STi WRX is posing, as long as there are at least SOME (most) of the STi's actual performance parts as well and most of the obvious STi badging is removed so people don't constantly think it's actually the pre-built STi. Another part of me says that removal of all the badges is necessary though. If it were me doing this I would remove all of the badging and replace it with subaru badging or something if I absolutely had to have a badge on something like the fog covers to keep it from looking naked.
I actually like the STi splitter a lot. Though I think that it would be much more fun to have a non-STi WRX to stomp all over the little kids with Mustang GT/V6's. I hate those guys. The only other community with more tards is the Civic community.

:unamused: These threads need to be locked. :unamused: This has been covered over and over agian and guess what people still put STI badges on their cars if they want. If this bothers you to the point that you dont want your STI anymore then sell it and get an 08. You need more then a badge to make your WRX look like an STI and then you can stop your crying and whining.

So can I put an STi badge on my Bugeye when I put this in this weekend? :)

I'm not going to wast money to buy the STi badges anytime soon but my eventual plan is to swap tranny, and every other crappy thing on the wrx to STi or above ;) but most likely keeping the 2.0

Wow.. this thread is all about making a carbon copy clone of an STi.. not adding a badge here and there. Stay on topic.

My issue is with the performance side of it, and giving 'true' STIs a bad name. When some retard in a Civic Si runs a 'fake' STI and wins, word gets spread about how slow our cars our. Fake STIs give the real ones a bad name as far as performance is concerned.

Who gives a sheet what a guy running a Civic Si said? We all know what an original Sti is capable of. Who cares. I think people can do whatever they want to there cars, within reason. I thought having a Subaru meant that we were something apart from the import crowd. Why get caught in the mess of that? Every Subaru i see is a representation of the owner. People have all different opinions on how a car should look and or how fast it is going to be. There is no right or wrong way. We' all know what an Sti looks and runs like, so if it's fake you're probably gonna know. I myself cannot afford an Sti, but would like my WRX to look and run like one someday down the road. I personally don't care what people do, as long as it's tasteful and within reason. Which all subaru's are. That's my .02
P.S., I guess those who want there car to look like a SWRT rally car are frowned upon too? We could go on for years about this. Everyone is going to do what their going to do. Leave it be.

My cut and paste from several pages back.. seems like too many of these recent replies are off topic.
It seems a bunch of new posters don't really understand what this thread is/was about. The OP was turning his WRX into a complete and total STi clone - bumper, wing, badges, decals, side skirts, brakes, wheels, hood scoop, etc - he set up a poll and asked everyone's opinion regarding this. It's not about a trunk swap (I also dig the STi wing) or a pink badge - it's about a carbon copy of the USDM Subaru WRX/STi.
STi stopped being JUST the tuning brand when it began to produce the USDM STi - it's a model now. Again, AMG, Ruf, SRT-XX, are also in house "tuners" - but to slap on AMG, Ruf, Callaway, Shelby badges, bumpers, and wings to become a clone is not respected by a bazillion people - I'm ASSuming it goes the same way with many Subaru owners who care about the mechanics and heritage of their rally inspired beaters. I'm sure more people would have a different opinion if it were an RS doing this.
This is my opinion - one that began developing in the early 90's when I'd go to the Thursday night cruises and see a Chevelle SS that turned out to be a Malibu with a 307 and SS badges. Or an RS/SS with a straight six and three on the tree. Those cars are scoffed at - period. Maybe there's a difference between a WRX posing to be an STi and a Yenko Nova poser - but "I" don't see it - and that's my opinion. Both cars get the eye brow shrug and are quickly walked away from.

Why? They have been producing a JDM STi model for years, what makes the USDM so special as to warrant this? Frankly most purests would say the USDM STi isnt a true STi. Fact is there are many variants of the STi. There is a Legacy STi, Impreza STi and a Forrester STi. This alone proves that there is no such thing as an STi, rather that STi is a tuned version of a model.
Imagine if tomorrow Subaru decides to release a Legacy STi or a Tribeca STi in the US.......what now? When someone says an STi your going to have to wonder if it is a Legacy, Tribeca or Impreza. It would be different if someone put a 22b, S202, S204 badge on their car as those are actual models.
Also, slapping on AMG/Ruf badges is perfectly fine if you have the parts to back it up.

They are tuned versions of a model, STi designates that the model has been tuned by STi.
The model is a Impreza WRX STi, not a STi.
And im not positive, but I dont think Shelby makes aftermarket parts for the Mustang? I think they only help in the production of upgraded models, and give them actual model names such as the GT500.
Now if you had a V6 mustang and put a supercharger on it from Saleen, I see no problem putting a Saleen sticker on your car as it has the parts to back it up.
The same goes for someone who say puts on all the suspension/brakes or other performance parts from STi, putting a STi sticker on the car is then ok. I find the badging of the car to be a grey area though as I find that it implies that the engine has been tuned by STi. This is why I think only the members on the board who have done full swaps are justified in placing the full badging on the car.

I've added the V-Limited replica lip, the 2007 STI LTD trunk spoiler and the 2006/2007 STI rear diffuser and NO STI badges -- it's a WRX and not the WRX-STI.
Very simple: I like the look of these parts. Besides, I've seen a 2007 STI LTD around here once, and that's it.
As for everyone that does not have a 2007 STI LTD, I have not seen either the WRX or the WRX-STI with the V-Limited Lip or any other WRX's with the STI rear diffuser. Maybe I don't get out much, but who GAF.
Do what you want, but don't say STI on a regular WRX and vice versa.

The OP is trying to turn his WRX into a carbon copy of the USDM STi - not add an effing badge here and there - that's what this thread is about.
And the STi he's trying to copy is a model - not some tuning house prepped car - which the STi is NOT. They're built on an assembly line just like all the other junks FHI rolls out.
Quit trying to compare a few STi parts (badge, scoop, wing) to someone going all out - OP was trying to make it so only a true Subaru fan would know it was a WRX. Get this through your melon - HE'S TRYING TO FOOL EVERYONE INTO THINKING IT'S A USDM STI!!!
It's no different than someone sticking "turbo" on the back of their Porshe.. after they spend elevently billion dollars on big brakes, rims, and body mods to make it look like that one five letter word implies. Take an SL500 and do the body mods, rims, badges, and BBK (the AMG SL65 is WAAY more of a factory tuned car than any FHI model) implies you've got a $200k, 605hp monster.
LIQUIDSK8S - can you tell the difference yet? A Shelby decal is a lot different than a visual clone

First you need to realize something, I fully understand what the original point of the thread was. Fact is we are on a diff tangent at the moment.
No the STi he is copying is not a model, a simple fact you fail to comprehend. It is a Impreza WRX that has been prepped by STi, which is there in house tuner. There is no such thing as a "STi", you need to realize that. There are different Subaru models that are tuned by STi, so which one should be called the "STi"?
But in regards to the original question of the thread (which I already touched on, but will do so again to please you). I think it's fine for him to change all the body parts etc to make it look exactly like an STi, provided he doesnt put official badges on with it.

Subaru sells Imprezza, Imprezza GX, Imprezza RX, Imprezza WRX and Imprezza WRX STi which, I think answers the question doesn't it? You either have one or you don't. Guys have being modifying cars for ages for whatever reason. Usually because they can't afford the real thing to begin with. Then again, we get a car and we like to change it someway or another anyway
You are not the first to do the opposite. Here is my 2005 WRX STi

Even swapped the interior.

0 badges. Takes a suby enthusiast to be able to still tell it's an STi.
In the middle of a motor build and turbo swap, block is still @ the machine shop getting rebore. I did put on some SIACK KW Variant 3's to replace my TEIN Basics and threw on some light Rotas for beaters while I fix and paint my stock BBS's.

I have the STi spoiler, and the STi interior on my car, if you just look at it the only wat to tell it is not one is the brakes. (Still have larger 07's tho), the transmission, and the intake manifold not being red.
BUT I DO NOT HAVE ANY STi STICKERS ON THE CAR!
That is the main reason I think it is ok. I replaced all the STi stickers with something else, just an illusion.

They are not, mine are the same way. Brembo tells you to install them that direction. IDK why, but that is what the instructions say.

Don't badge it unless you got the power to back it up. I've been trying to get my STi to look like a wrx but no luck yet. Aspen White Trunk lids are hard to come by in good condition for some reason!:(
^^ few hundred? hows that with the tiny turbos that are on the wrx's..
yeah... I was wondering the same thing. Few thousand, maybe. Few hundred? LOL yeah right.

OK, so you find yourself in a late night stop light race with a Pristine 1970 Chevelle 454 SS. Race happens, and you win. You think to yourself, "Wow, I just beat a 454 SS" and proceed to tell your friends about the race. Little did you know, it's a rebadged 350.
You now think you just beat a bad-mofo car, when in actuality you just beat a fake.
See my point now?

Ok Now, STI is Subaru Tecnica International Right? A performance parts manufaturer for subaru just like Ralliart for mitsu and TRD for toyota. If you own suspension from Sti Y not rep it on the car? I see it as the same difference in putting tien badges or forcedperformance stickers on your car. So what if someone says they beat an STI? You didn't beat mine and thats all I care about!

dude, don't even waste your breath trying to explain this. if you'd read back a few thousand pages, this has been stated then restated, then stated again. there is no end. the truth to this thread is that the guy that thought it up apparently had some kind of ego that he had an STi and didn't like WRX's looking like STi's. he needed to understand that a WRX STi is a "factory tuned and modified" (that comes with a warranty) WRX.
what it comes down to is that all these ego tripped arrogant fools that buy STi's and think they're on top of the world get spanked by WRX's. then they see that the WRX has STi parts (that come with STi stickers on them) and they get all bent out of shape. then there's the other arrogant ego tripped bunch that paid 35k for their WRX STi and think that just because they paid that much, they "deserve" or think they earn the right to say who can and can't have STi stickers on their car. it's really disgusting and makes me sick that these people own a subaru at all. ok, rant is off now.
