I kept the lip silver to be different. Would have painted bronze, but the stopped selling wheelpaint in that color.
The moment you've all been waiting for....
It's an 06 2.5i!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just swapped my stockers for new 06 wrx wheels (got them for $490 total brand new).

The spoiler came with the car (as well as the splash guards which I took off)
The spot on the hood is nothing... just a reflection or something.
Ahhh ic ic....Well it looks really good!!!

Nice work.

Any plans for engine modification???

Thanks! As for engine mods, I am probably just going to throw a CAI on there when one is made...

I'm looking for a full exhaust system as well, but there are so many choices I don't know which to choose. any ideas? Since it's a 2.5i (and since I want to buy an STI in 1 or 2 years) I probably won't do much for power.

I got $500 in subaru bucks for buying the car and I just purchased a roof rack, all weather mats, upgraded speakers & tweeters and wrx pedal kit.

I have a system sitting around the house waiting to be installed and I am also going to tint the windows this weekend.

Wow, so after this is all done ill put up some new pics hehe

sand it down!
Jasvboost 02-28-2006 11:12 PM

Most that have painted thier wheels have some sort of scratches or curb rash. That is what the process of the etching primer is for. I took an extra step and went to work on them at slow speeds with my Dremel. In the end that took care of the scratches almost 100%.
gold ftw! bronze duplicolor was a little too dark for my liking. derusto gold metallic for $2/can.
how many cans and coats did you use?
epaplia 03-01-2006 02:02 AM

when I did mine, I used 2.5 cans of color. Thats with about 4 light coats. Then the clear coat you should use about 2-3 coats.

Didnt use any primer. It worked out well.

phils04wrx 03-01-2006 07:56 AM

i just did my 2 passenger side wheels last week and started my 2 driver side wheels yesterday. the 2 pass side wheels were fine but the two drivers side wheels had some curb rashes. As learned from the previous posts, use denatured alcohol to clean all the crap off the wheels. I used 150 grit sandpaper to get throgh the rashes, (Yes you have to sand into the aluminum to get rid of the bad rashes) and then 400 grit to smooth it out and continue with the 400 grit over the whole wheel. i then used denatured alcohol to clean the wheel again and the appiled six light coats and two medium to heavy coats, (just enough to prevent drips or sags) of color, (Duplicolor graphite in my case). I then used two light coats and two medium to heavy coats of clear. Plenty of sunlight, (Or propane heater heat later) I have factory looking graphite colored wheels.
hikeeba 03-01-2006 09:24 AM
i used duplicolor bronze with two coats of duplicolor clear and four undercoats of flat black.

i think the undercoats are what make mine look duller. i also like the look.
Thanks Handsdown! I am now leaning away from graphite and towards the Handsdown bronze finish. Maybe... I like 'em both! Arg!
blueb3 04-02-2006 12:23 AM

So inspired, I decided to take matters into my own hands and paint up my wheels. Had a hard time finding paint I liked, Duplicolor was too dark for my taste (Dark blue Legacy Wagon) and the first paint I founf that LOOKED like it should be right, wasn't I found the perfect setup though - Read on, sorry for the length:
Updating with first stage of painting done!! Used Rustoleum's new Metallic line of paint in a metallic bronze ($5.17 a can at Lowes) First impression, ***** tons of metallic flake. WEAR A MASK!
Pulled the center caps off, and apart, cleaned, scuffed, primed, painted, sanded again (damn paint blobs) And then, moved on to the wheels. Since I am junking the tires, I didn't feel the need to protect them. The first picture was how the test of the first paint turned out, Who says my Legacy can't Bling?

This shows the best representation of the actual color that these turned out. For some reason the color doesn't show up right on the camera. BBS center pieces for center caps.

Center caps pulled and coated (Total of 4 coats)

hikeeba 04-02-2006 08:40 AM

Woot! I really like that bronze color! Quite bornzy! Dang, I have some decisions to make come spring time....

I found a set of 16" wheel covers recently. I think I will do each wheel cover in a different color and slap em on the steelies to get an idea of what the colors look like on the car. I have Duplicolor Bronze and Graphite cans now, but will pick up the Rustoleum Metallic bronze, too.

And maybe a Flat Black and Duplicolor Blue Metalcast in an attempt to achieve that 'Cosmic Blue' color. For some reason, the Cosmic Blue really intrigues me, but I am embarassed to admit it.
blueb3 04-02-2006 01:19 PM

Whatever floats your boat! I painted up the wheelcovers with the duplicolor bronze first to get a feel for the color on the car. It was a cheap and easy way to get a real feel for the color. And that way I wasn't experimenting on the wheels themselves. The rustoleum comes in a metallic blue as well :D As you can see from the oics though, it's a TON of flake in the paint. One finish I saw and really liked was the "hammered metal" finish in a copper color. ALMOST got that instead. (Still might :D )
hikeeba 04-03-2006 10:13 AM

Hmmm... Hammered Copper? I'll have to look for that, too. Dang, at this rate, maybe I should look for a second set of 'test' wheel covers to paint. Nah, I'll just paint the inside of the current wheel covers. This project is going to be 90% trying to figure out a color, and 10% doing the job.
blueb3 04-03-2006 12:19 PM

Exactly, I had 6 different colors of gold and bronze before I narrowed it down to the bronze metallic.

Unfortunately I don't have pics of these wheels on a car because they were done for a member on here and he now owns them. I never liked the silver BBS's and the gold wasnt the right gold for me. To me this was the best thing to ever happen to these wheels. I'm glad the deal was done before I painted them or else they would probably be on my car. These pictures do not give the full effect of these wheels. You would have to see them in person to get the full effect. The wheels were to go on a silver car. Regret selling them? Maybe in the back of my head but I didn't like the wheels before they got painted.

Oh and the wheels were painted outside :)
Wagon Of Fury 06-29-2006 06:13 PM

There's a point I hadnt seen anyone address earlier in the thread - what about painting the inside/back of the rims ? Mine are coated with lots of brake dust and other road nastiness, and Im going with a deep metallic graphite finish anyway, so who cares ? Cant see the inside of the rim anyway.

Already started with the aircraft stripper, and its pretty obviously going to take more than the two coats Ive already hit it with. But I want to do it only once, and do it right.

And where the hell are people getting powdercoating for $50-60 a wheel ? Around here the cheapest I was ever able to find was $100/wheel and that was a few years ago.
80884 06-29-2006 07:45 PM

I painted the whole wheel except for the inside (inside the tire) to give a complete job and yes you do see this part of the wheel. You also see this part of the wheel reflected onto the spokes with certian paints. So if the inside looks like crap that can reflect onto the spokes and well...you get the point. Mainly only happens if going with a lighter color on the spokes than the inside of the wheels is. Some wheels that have the name "super black" "hyper black" etc are done this way. The wheel is painted black and the spoke area is painted lightly a transparent silver. Depending on how you look at the wheel it could be black or silver or any mixture in between. Actually looks really good if done right.

Powdercoating is cheaper if you take the wheel in ready to be coated. Other than their final cleaning they have not much work to do. Lowers the price a little.

It costs me $10 a wheel to have the whole thing blasted. Comes back ready for whatever coating or painting you want to do. So...
$40 to blast wheels
$10 for etching primer
$60 for all paint supplies, base, clear and all the goodies that go with it (varies depending on paint)
A couple hrs of time invested = done.
Total cost was roughly $110 for all 4 wheels, base/clear paint, matchable to the car if desired. End result was shown above ^^^^^

You don't have to worry about the inside of the wheel but to me it will look like it was done half assed. Just my opinion.
Wagon Of Fury 06-29-2006 08:56 PM

80884 - you did an amazing job, no argument.
Ive got the OEM 03 WRX wheels that I essentially got for free with some minor curb damage. The thick stock ribs create shadows that conceal most of the inner wheel but I see your point about light colors and such.

Something else no-one mentioned : wear rubbber gloves ! Yes it says it on the can but most people (read: guys) will try to be toughguys and the sneaky thing about aircraft stripper is that it doesn't IMMEDIATELY burn, but rather it sneaks up on you. I also used up a pack of 000 steel wool once the stripped gooped up the paint.

Metal etching primer went on about an hour ago, gonna try to do the first topcoat tonight ! Pics coming soon.
80884 06-29-2006 10:31 PM

Thats true, I wasn't thinking about some wheel designs you can't really see the inside.

Yeah, wear gloves (arm length) if using that stuff. I had to strip powdercoat off of a valve cover once. About 3 layers of powder coat! Using a wire brush worked but also flung stripper all over the place, on my arms, hands etc...I guess if your mind is in the gutter that would be a good thing   But yea, that stuff does tend to burn if not removed quickly.

Thanks for the compliment. Good luck with the wheels.
Kaymin 07-13-2006 06:13 AM

Farfrumwork 07-13-2006 12:01 PM

As for durability....

I used the Bronze Duplicolor on some '03 WRX wheels topped with Duplicalor clearcoat (paid $100 for the wheels, almost perfect stock condition) early spring '05. These are my summer wheels, so I am on the 2nd summer and so far the only damage they have is from the initial tire mounting (they banged into eachother before the tires were on - doh!) - BUT the damage is Very slight and you can't see it unless on your hands and knees examining the wheels... So the paint is fairly durable.

I am very happy with the bronze rex wheels (the color really changes the appearance). They aren't quite as clean as 80884's (Super nice job dood!) but I did all the prep and paint in my carport (LOTS of sanding, cleaning, paint, paint, paint, clearcoat). I need t get some pics up someday.

80884 07-13-2006 03:32 PM

Thanks. I painted a set before that started out with an "odds & ends" spray paint can from walmart but I used it to paint a card to take to the paintshop to mix up reg paint to use. Alowed me to get the right "color" for the final process. which turned out like this....

They turned out pretty good but I got sick of them and got other wheels, lol. The gold wheels are now the winter wheels.

80884, those look great!
Donzo 08-06-2006 01:31 AM

Ok, I read everything in this entire thread and it seems that I still can't find the color I'm looking for. I want to make the color on my stock '06 wheels a littler darker, but not the near black of graphite. I parked my car half in the shade a while ago and when I stepped out I noticed that the slightly darker wheel that was in the shade look friggin bad ass!! So, anyone have any recommendations as to what company/color would be a few shades darker than the stock silver?
D fresh 08-06-2006 06:00 AM
Okay, well there is the pic of the wheel .. it's been about 6 months since I painted them and they do have some chips, but they are mainly from taking the wheels off and on so often. besides the few chips they are holding up well.
Exactly the reason to not cheap out on this. The correct way to "paint" you wheels is this.

1. Remove wheels and tires from car.

2. Unmount the tires, remove wheights and valve stem.

3. Take wheels to a powdercoater who will blast and powdercoat your wheels in the color of your choice.

4. Remount tires, balance with sticky wheights on the inside, replace valve stems.

5. Mount wheels on car.

There you go, easy, cheap, and it'll last as long as the car. I did mine for about $125 and they look much better than ANY "painted wheels."

EDIT: Except for 80884's first pics.
silentbob343 08-06-2006 06:09 AM

unless the wheels were heat treated, then the powder coat curing process will weaken the wheel. Search for other post peope have posted pics. And there is a letter from BBS floating around here as well.

^^^True, for the "forged by the hand of God" BBS STi wheels. I don't believe it is so for '02-'04 WRX stockers.

Donzo 08-07-2006 03:36 AM

hey, have any of you polished/waxed/buffed your wheels after you painted them? I did an easy repair job on my set of wheels but the repaired area has a "frost" type look to it since it's not as shiny as the rest of the wheel. I clear coated it and everything. Someone recommended using a compound... that did absolutely nothing for me lol I'm going to fine sand it with 1000 grit and then 1500 grit (unless I should just go straight to 1500) and then see what I should do next. This is what I am left with... you can see where the repair was taped off.

80884 08-07-2006 01:08 PM

TheDon427 -To me I don't see the "shine" difference, I see a paint matching problem. Could just be the picture tho.

It's hard to tell from pics so I won't assume anything but if it is in fact rougher than the inside then yes, sanding and buffing should match it right back to the inside. It's hard to get stuff to match without doing the whole part. example: My sister has black w/polished lip wheels, they are also clearcoated. She curbed one lip (only about 2 inch worth) and i fixed it. Because of the clearcoat I had to do the whole lip. Sanded entire lip till the clear was gone and kept going till the factory "polished" machined lines in the aluminum were gone, then gave them a light buff job with metal polish and now.....I think I'm going to have to do the other 3  . The one I did looks better than the other 3 even tho i tried to do a not really good job to try to match the other wheels :( .

Sand and buff the wheel and it should look good. I'd probably sand the whole wheel and buff the whole wheel if it were me just to make sure that before you buff you have the same surface on the entire wheel, that way when buffing you won't have to "watch" that you don't buff too much and make the part you did look better than the original ;)
You could try just a spot of sanding and buffing just to see if you can match that spot in, but usually when i do this if i mess up and make that spot look better than before, then i wasted my time sandign and buffing cuz you have to do it all over again = the main reason I hate body work

Darker silver than stock but not too dark? Thats what I was aiming for here...

Is that what you want or do you want lighter or darker than that?
Donzo 08-07-2006 01:34 PM

Thanks for the advice, however, I've never buffed anything before so I have to do some reading on how to properly do it and what I would need. The newly painted areas are rougher than the original areas. That pic was without any clear coat so it doesn't look as bad anymore. It's still noticeable to me, probably because I know it's there, but I have to get down on my hands and knees to notice. I think I'll just lightly sand the entire wheel and then clear coat it once or twice more. I bought a compound that someone recommended to me and it came with a little applicator sponge pad but it didn't do anything at all so I have no idea what I'm doing wrong with that.

Oh yea and that color looks great, I just don't know if it's as dark as I would like. I'd have to see it in person because it looks pretty close to stock silver.
80884 08-07-2006 02:10 PM

Without lighting they are a good bit darker than the factory silver on my 04 bbs's. Your wheel color may differ from the BBS's. It is stock subaru factory 2006 steel grey metallic, so if you know of any cars in your area this color then you can see it in person.

Try the sanding and clearcoat thing. It might work. if you sand, clear coat and it looks worse, stop there. Certian "flaws" are sometimes magnified by clearcoat. Just a heads up so you don't keep clearing and not noticing any improvements.

The compound and buffing = very important. If your hand buffing then you will be there for a long time. Use a machine or powered buffer and not know what you are doing prior to using it can lead to problems resulting in you ending up having to paint them all over again = reason #2 on my list of why I hate body work. lol

Maybe in the back of my head but I didn't like the wheels before they got painted.

Oh and the wheels were painted outside :)
Did you use a can of spraypaint or a spraygun. It looks way to good to be a can of spray paint?

Spraygun. Painted just like the outside of a car. Thanks

How long do you have to wait after putting base coats of paint on before you put on the clear coats?

Thanks

I wait till the paint is dry to the touch (about 20-30 minutes) before I put the clear coat on. Just be sure not to test the paint on a visable portion of the wheel, you don't want to leave finger prints :)

i painted my stock wheels a dark blue a couple weeks ago.
i def like the result... looks great. one minute they are blue the next they look black.
its a nice change till i get some extra money for some nice rims i got my eye on. it seriously took like 4 hrs all together...if that. ill def repaint them...just for fun....

Do you have any pictures of these blue wheels? I'm very curious to see how these will look on a wrx.

Has anyone painted stockers white? I'd especially like to see that on a black car. I'm planning on doing that to my stock wheels (w/winter tires) but I'd like to see it first.
AlbaScoob 09-29-2006 03:56 PM

perhaps a re-post but anyway...
