Does anybody have the pics from the original post warehoused somewhere? I'm buying a used rack this weekend and am going to have to buy new clips. I would like to see what exactly is being done with the q7's and how exactly they are attached to the car before buying the q7's or q78's.... and also to see if the clips that are coming with my rack could be modified to work without having to drop the additional money on new clips.
| simonbsays | 08-14-2008 02:12 AM |
My post (right above yours) links to my write up.... there are a few pics on what the clips would look like. I didn't include any footage of what it looks like under the molding, but it's basically a black bracket that you can hook the modified clips into.

Thanks. I looked at your thread before. I'm looking for more about removing the weather stripping )I don't understand why it has to come off and how you put it back on after installing the rack.

I'm not sure you could wedge the clip to the mounting point (if you can find it) without removing the weather stripping.

Pull off your weather stripping and find out...it'll work on any model with riveted tabs, just may require slightly different modification of the clips or a different series of clip.

Yeah I did that and I do have the tabs, but the front tabs would set the front crossbar right over the sunroof and the rear tabs are pretty far back. I just ended up using the window molding clips.

I've got my rack pieced together, all I need to buy are the clips. In the writeup, there was never a sure degree to bend the clips to. Only "about 100 degree or so bend". How far are these clips supposed to be bent?
ok found additional picutres. I'll be sure to take pics when doing the install. Hopefully sometime this weekend.
edit 2: bought the clips today. hopefully will be installing everything tomorrow and I'll take pictures.

alright well, here's the final result:

I had to cut the cross bars down as well. I left 6 inches on all sides. Overall it wasn't too hard just time consuming. I was lucky enough to have access to air tools and a shop so I think it went pretty quick. My dad helped me out with some of the cutting and unfortunately the removal of the rain gutter.
When the write up says there is little force involved in pulling them up, there really is little force involved in pulling them up. Notice the first clip is in pieces. There were also more than I had expected, about 5 per side.

cutting went pretty quick and was relatively easy.

Clips were bent to 100 degrees.

Once mounted however, the feet sit on the weather stripping not the roof like they should. How is this fixed?

If the "feet" are too far in, that may cause denting when rack is under load. Try to land the feet as close to the edge as possible...
I haven't seen denting with my setup, but i HAVE seen scratching. Dirt gets under the rubber pads after a while and can be very abrasive under there.
Here's what I've done to prevent it..... Applied some clear paint protection film (clear bra material) right under the feet (cut slighly larger around). It's basically invisible, but look hard and you should notice the edge:

Just installed the Yakima roof rack and the Yakima FatCat 6 ski accessory to the subbie the other day. I started installing the SKS locks into the Q-Towers, that went fine as well. However, once I started putting the locks on the FatCat, the actual lock cores will not fit into the ski accessory. As I was messing around with the locks trying to get them to fit, somehow the FatCat got locked (both front and rear ones) without the SKS lock cores even installed.
How can I unlock the ski attachment and get these locks in?
Thanks in advance!

If you damage your roof you deserve it for having a 14in kayak. One worse is having 3 mountain bikes on your roof doing triple digit speeds.

Completed it today, went a little slower than anticipated but I was really specific about where I wanted the towers to sit. It's sturdy, and doesn't make nearly as much noise as I expected.
However, I'm now looking for a snowboard clamp/rack w/ keys. Anybody looking to sell one?

All you need to do is use a pen and turn the plate. There is a nipple on the sks core itself so when you install it make sure it lines up with the corresponding indent on the inside plate. It should slide in easily. You can use your thumb to push it in and not even use there gold key.

My molding strips are squeezed together slightly, but you can't tell by looking at it. I wouldn't consider it "smashed" though. Are you popped each and every clip back in when re-installing the molding?
I used the old school sst y towers that yakima used to make and y3 clips. The clips have to be cut but they DO NOT have to be bent.
The clips also sit to the inside of the rain gutter stripping rather than the outside like the q clips do.
The sst towers are 25 bucks for a set of four on ebay and that is with locks and the key.
Y3 clips can be a bear to find but are cheaper than q clips.

From what I investigated this is the cleanset setup I have found. I like how the clips sit on the inside of the molding and there is no need to cut them. I work at a bike shop and am going through all the different manufacturers and since Yakima dose not make the SST's anymore I think I am going to have to order something older on ebay.
My question is, does anyone know if the control towers will fit on our sedans. I know they fit on 08+ but my main goal is to make my rack as low-pro as possible and this is what Yakima has for thier new line of towers for facory rails.
If not what are the demensions that were used to cut the Y3 clips to make the SST to fit on.
The clips also sit to the inside of the rain gutter stripping rather than the outside like the q clips do.
The sst towers are 25 bucks for a set of four on ebay and that is with locks and the key.
Y3 clips can be a bear to find but are cheaper than q clips.

Looking to do this now that I have a rack. I have the standard clips for the window edge mounting, but this doesn't leave enough clearance for my snowboard bindings.
