How To: Custom Installed Yakima Rack part 5

2.5 turbo hyped 10-25-2007 12:04 AM

I used the old school sst y towers that yakima used to make and y3 clips. The clips have to be cut but they DO NOT have to be bent.

The clips also sit to the inside of the rain gutter stripping rather than the outside like the q clips do.

The sst towers are 25 bucks for a set of four on ebay and that is with locks and the key.

Y3 clips can be a bear to find but are cheaper than q clips.

Can anyone measure the distance from the windshield back to the center of the front factory mount and the c2c distance back to the rear mounts?

Can I hook the modified clip in there w/o pulling the moulding?

I'm dreading pulling up those trim strips because I had to do that w/my old GF8 and they never stayed put after that.

Nope, pull the moulding. Slide a screwdriver underneath it to get the clips to release, it's easy once you take a look at it.

if you cut the crossbars, will the end caps go back on?
if you cut the crossbars, will the end caps go back on?
power tools for a clean cut. it's just common sense. if you pinch the ends while cutting the excess off, then the caps won't go back on...

There was a question on this thread somewhere in regards to the locking mechanism for the SKS lock cores. I recently did this mod with the lock cores. The lock cores fit in the latch perfectly.

This mod is great! I can now yank on the rack without worries. I always wondered about the OEM install because the window weather stripping doesn't seem like a solid anchoring point.
IceWilly,

How high off the roof do the modified YAKIMA clips stick up off the roof without the rest of the parts installed?

I am thinking of doing this trick again on my new car. Last time around I did it with a Thule rack...I wouldn't be against trying it with a Yakima though, and your statement intrigues me.

Got a pic with just the clip installed?
I don't. I saw a picture at one point (i thought on this thread) that showed them maybe 1" or so above the top of the car, but I went back to look for it to show you guys and couldn't find it.)

If anyone knows of those pic, or has the Q clips and could take a pic of just the clips on the car and no towers. It would be greatly appreciated.
indelible 10-30-2007 04:55 PM

i havent installed mine yet, at least another month before i do, i'll take pics when i do. But the Q clips are huge, a lot bigger than i had imagined, they'll stick out an inch to an inch and a half from the roof.
Meat Supply 10-31-2007 04:22 PM

^^^nice install there savage!!
hey yall. i like this thred here. going to put my sst towers on maybe this weekend........

for those of you who have done this how far apart are your towers (and mounting brackets i guess)??? i'm cutting up some y-25's i got on ebay for 15 with shipping...got the pads too. 15 was a good deal. anyway thanks ahead. i'll get some pics up when i'm all done to add to the little collection here. later yo
Meat Supply 11-01-2007 08:32 PM

me again......yeahhhhh
well i started work on my y-clips to get in those damned brackets under the black strippy thingy. got 2 so far. since the base of a 33 clip is about 3 inches maybe wide, i offset the cut of the bent tab (like didn't cut the tab into the middle but towards the side of the clip) so that in the front and the back it gives me about 1 1/2 inches more spread. i know we could all use another 1 1/2 right? i'll put pics up in a few minutes. oh yah, modded bars to fit my towers.....more pics soon!
LastResort 11-01-2007 08:42 PM

Yes, pics please! I like the idea of offsetting to get more spread.

You are almost correct in your assumption. The clips stick up about 1 1/4".
You will not want to leave them on the car when you take the racks off. They will be loose and wiggly when there is no tension on them. You can however remove them without pulling the moulding. If you are carefull this can be done without scratching anything.

Great Mod BTW!
Meat Supply 11-01-2007 09:22 PM
Yes, pics please! I like the idea of offsetting to get more spread.
yeah i gotta get the cam fired up in a minute here. they're pretty nice so far. it's a pain in my arse to get them just right to slide under the brackets. a little bit of trial and error. i wonder if on the newer imprezas the strip is wider and more convenient.....there's a little seam right next to the bracket that gets in the way a little too.....you just kinda have to work around it. my 4 1/2 sidegrinder is a lovely friend, i need a bench grinder though. *good chrimmis present idea for the fam!!*

and my custom bars. they're not yakima bars (cuz im ferkin cheap), they're round bar from the hardware (8$) and it's near impossible to find any bar with 1 1/8 outside diam. my bar is 1 1/4 so i took my friend the grinder and cut a 1/8 inch slot for a few inches in so when the cam thingy on the tower tightens it compresses the bar and it then fits!!! it'll be plenty strong, maybe just to carry some skis or a couple bikes.......

pics soon!!---------edit....ughhhh photobucket making me wait!!!

here's what i got so far.........i know the cut on the one isn't very square...i have some trimming to do!!

You mean if i was just to remove the towers/crossbars but leave the Q clips? They probably stick up ~3 inches or so. They're not too obvious but they'd probably flop around a bit when driving.

You can make either the 233 or 206 work. After reviewing this thread, it looks as if I used the 206.

As far as cutting the clip is concerned, I think a tab of about 1/2 an inch will work. I cut one big long tab to fit under the hardpoint in the roof and then trimmed it further to fit under the hardpoint with the tower installed and it bent to ninety degrees. See my post further back with the scale bar for more details.

You have to loosen the screw which clamps onto the crossbars so the towers can be moved inwards.
You have to loosen the screw which clamps onto the crossbars so the towers can be moved inwards.
if ur talking about the screw that has a slot and kinda grooves/roughness (for finger tightening) on the head, then i already tried it. wierd. i loosened it and when i tried to clamp it down it wouldn't tighten.
Psydotek 11-26-2007 08:53 PM

No, the screws on the side of the tower that you gotta turn with a hex key. Loosen those so the towers release the crossbars, move towers closer together a tad, then retighten and check.

i haven't lugged around stuff that heavy, but it is a very sturdy setup. the towers don't "float", when u do it u'll see that when u clamp them down they stay firmly on the sheet metal.

i just got back from a weekend trip to PA with my snowboard on the roof rack and it help up quite well. i know its not that heavy, but the board causes a lot of drag/wind resistance... especially in a 400whp car. no problems at all

kruga225 12-17-2007 07:00 PM

For anyone that had their Yakima rack set-up with the Q78 clips or still does. Do the clips attach to that stiff black rubber piece that is above the windows? Do the windows hit the clips when you close the doors? Are there any other problems with the Q78's? I have a rack on order with the Q78 clips, but after reading through this mod it seems like lots of people are ditching the Q78 clips for the Q7's and modifying them, so I'm a little worried now and am trying to decide which way to go. Any info would be helpful.

Thanks.
Zalthras 12-17-2007 07:30 PM

I've been using the regular q78 clips at the window edge for two seasons so far, no problems other than roof clearance with fatter ankle strap bindings.

The first time I put it on, the front windows did contact the clips. But if you set the base at 5" away from the front windshield, and tighten the clips a lil more, it'll pull the flexible black molding up just enough so you don't have any issues with the windows. Also for the paint, I just used scrap pieces of 3m clear bra material to cover the tower pad areas.

Looking good, man. I still think they look better than any factory rail mounted racks on the wagons. I like how much shorter your crossbars are. I wasn't sure if I wanted to shorten mine so they don't hang off the sides as much, but now that I see it, I'm doing it.

Also, I noticed the new WRX hatchback comes with those brackets under the roof trim with little access doors for mounting a removable factory rack. Looks like we were on to something. ;)
Psydotek 01-21-2008 04:35 AM

I've got a question that's been kinda nagging me in the back of my mind...

What are the Q-Clips made of? When you cut the clips you are exposing bare metal (which is a problem for steel which i'm pretty sure they are)... Has anybody had issues with rust weakening the clips?

I suppose i should just check periodically once or twice a year and smear some grease on to the cut surface or spray it with some krylon paint...

:)
pearl 01-21-2008 05:41 PM

found my answer, now i just need to get the balls to trim it!

Not too sure exactly how much I cut off since I just made sure I had and inch of slack left on each side. One thing to note is that I cut the rear load bar shorter than the front. I'm only 5'9", but everytime I got into the car I almost hit the load bar. Trimming it down made life much nicer. :D

I was examining the weather strips of the 08's and was impressed. There's a little flip-up door right over roof rail deletes. The mounting points are exactly the same as on our wagons. The only problem is that the weather strips seem to be a lot strighter than on our wagons so I think it won't be a direct swap. I'm very curious to see what the 08 rack accessories look like. I'm positive they'll work with out setup, and the sedans, since we'll be able to attach them with screws.

How do you guys feel, about putting your expensive skis, and boards on top of your car unprotected, from rocks, and salt, and other road grim?
For those of you who have done this mod, can you wash the car on a car wash with the rack in place, pr do you still need to disassemble?
Took it through a carwash after snowboarding (watched it go through and everything) The farring didnt bang or anything. But you have to hand clean it cause my farring still had salt residue on it. But other than that im happy with it

I'm trying this with the Thule rack and a 206 fit kit. I just need to find something to cut my kit with :(

you should either use a dremel or what i prefer is a 4" hand grinder with a metal cutting blade. cuts like a charm

I did mine today. But I used the Q78 clips :(

you can see that the towers are 1.5~ inches away from the stripping towards the center of the car, and the clips seem long :(

i had to get a 38" fairing because the 44" fairing mounts lined up to where the Q towers hold the bars.

I blew my dremel up. oops ha

yes great write up and just finished the install. looks great, sturdy as hell and i have old q towers and fairing so a little different. i had clips that were from a volvo and modded them so they would fit and its just wonderful.

many thanks
