How To: Custom Installed Yakima Rack part 8

gando327 05-27-2010 10:47 PM

is there a way to make these fit on my 03 wrx sedan???

http://www.ems.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3663800&cp=3677352.3737590.3690229

I am getting a deal on Thule SQUARE cross bars, bike rack attachments, and fairing. I just need to figure out what to buy so i can attach it to my 03 wrx sedan. I want to attach it to the mounting points under the rain gutter. (not the window trim, that looks ghetto)

EDIT: this is probably the direction I should go, but what clips do i need to buy and modify??

do you have pictures of how much you cut off?

Sorry to bump this but will these old style Q17 with old style q towers work for this mod?

1) You'll Need to Purchase:
- Q Towers
- Q Clips (clip number: Q7)
- Crossbars
- Fairing (44") Optional

2) Wash and wax your roof!

3) Follow the initial directions of this link in order to remove the roof striping:
Clicky Here

4) Once the striping is removed you'll see the following riveted connection points

5) Now you must cut and bend the Q7 clips to fit into these connection point. I used a dremel to cut and two heavy duty plyers for the bending. Cut first, then bend. Also...DO NOT BEND BACK if you think you have bent them too much. Bend only in one direction and if you bent it too far, go spend the 20 bucks for a new set of Q clips and try again. The bend should be around 100 degrees. See the following for a good idea of the cutting and bending needed.

6) Do a temp install of the rack and mark on the crossbars about 3cm past where they stick out of the q tower. Cut the crossbars with a hack saw or pipe cutters (easier). This is purely aesthetic...if you want the bars to hang off the ends, then keep 'em long.

7) When you are adjusting the preload on the Q tower cams realize that the rack will pull to the side that is tighter...so use the flathead screws as a way to center the rack on top of the car. Once the rack is installed you must reinstall the roof striping. The trick here is to open both Q Tower cams and feed the striping through the gaps in the Q towers....hard to explain, but easier to understand once you have it in your hands. Take your time reinstalling the striping because it does take a bit more effort with the Q towers now in the way, but you should be able to get a good install.

Impressions:
I love my car with a rack...simply because it is that much more versatile. Not more jamming surfboards and bikes in places they shouldn't be. This rack install versus the configuration reccomended by yakima, thule, and RINNO I believe looks cleaner (no clips hanging down to the window trim) and is probably a bit more secure (due to the fact you are cliping to a structural component rather than an aesthetic component). You also don't have to worry about damaging the window trim. One big minus is that the rack does sit a couple inches higher than if you installed it the way yakima, etc. reccomends. To me, it is worth the added height for the added protection.

Lemme know if there are any questions....

any way you have these photo's up again? or able to send these pictures to me?

As this seems less intrusive than the 2nd gen, i have a couple questions.

How long does the tab need to be that hooks under the mounting point under the weather stripping? Also, how hard is it to remove/put on the roof rack? is it something I can do in a moment's notice? (i.e. last minute snowboard/MTB trip)

The tab is like 1-2" from what I remember. It is fairly easy to remove and put on that car, about 10 min tops. However, it takes about 10 secs for a thief to pry it off the car too... which happened to me. :sadbanana:

Dont live in a ****ty area? Lots of people run around with no locks on their racks around here..

You dont have to live in a ****ty area to get your stuff jacked. I had a full basket, and snowboard attachments. Westminster is not necessarily the projects either. I've known guys that lived in Newport and Irvine that got that stuff jacked.

These thieves drive around in the middle of the night just looking for roof racks.

can someone confirm if the yakima 48" bars are long enough for the control tower setup to be used on a GC, going to use the hardpoints under the driprails.I imagine that if they work with q towers, they should work with control towers, but I would like to know for sure before I buy on craigslist.

thanks krazy

Yes they would work. The 48" bars are actually longer than needed. On my GD, I cut them down quite a bit.

I have a 48" cross bar and a 44" fairing on my GC and i can remove it and reinstall on my GD and it all fits the same with a little adjustment

Just put my racks on today with this custom install! so stoked on how it turned out! it feels so much more solid that using the Q78 clips on the outer strips. Thanks for putting this all together! Eventually I think I'll upgrade to the newer install, but since I already bought the Q Towers I just went with this for now. Seems to be working great!
wrxratedsti 09-06-2011 10:04 AM

ordered some q7 clips to give this a try. will update with pics later this weekend.
jojotherider 09-12-2011 06:44 PM

will this work?
will this work if i dont bend the q78 clips? on the 03 wrx
wskboarderx 09-02-2013 08:06 PM

Pictures on the original post no longer work. Can we get an update?
wskboarderx 09-02-2013 09:04 PM

Also has anyone tried this with Q99 clips?
wskboarderx 09-02-2013 09:57 PM

Actually, if you are using Q7's because they are shorter, and you still have to cut them down and bend them, why not just cut and bend the Q78's that I have? Shouldn't that work just the same?

Does anyone have measurements for their altered Q7's?
I think I should only need Lengths A and B, angle C could be helpful as well.

Thanks
