You need to treat the wheel as if you had never painted it: scuff, clean, paint. Bummer about the tire guys messing them up though it isn't too surprising. I painted mine after getting the tires mounted, even though it is more of a PITA.

I need some color suggestions for my Stockers, '09 hatch Dark Grey Metallic. Was leaning towards Bronze, just not too sure. Havent been able to find too DGMs out there with painted wheels. What do you all think?

I was thinking of painting some RS 5 spokes. Can you paint them prior to being mounted and balanced? I'd imagine if you got them mounted after, they could get damaged during mounting.

It depends on how good a job you do painting and how bad a job the tire guys do mounting the tires. All alloys are painted so if they lean on the surface or lip hard it will scratch. Painting without tires is easier, and there are no weights or valve stems to deal with, but I would want to make sure you have a good installer after all the hard work.

Personally, I would get the tires mounted and balanced (weights on the inside btw) before you paint ... yeah, it would be easier to paint the rims without tires on, but when they mess up the lip and you have to repaint, it won't look very good. Spray paint won't hold up to the tire machine and it will just scrape off.
just my two cents
Chris
