Yeah, I have the same questions...How do these painted wheels hold up in the winter or over time? Do they kill your resale value?
| fireball_jones | 07-14-2005 01:56 PM |
I did mine, and most people haven't realized they aren't factory yet. Low humidity means it's not gonna rain any time soon. When I sanded, I didn't take the paint off, just roughed up the wheels with a 3M pad. I used a self-etching primer, that seemed to really even the wheels out. Wetsanding refers to dunking the sandpaper in water and then sanding.
I did 6 very *very* light coats of paint, and 3 of clear. I'll see how they hold up this winter, but I don't think it's going to be a problem. I did bronze on my blue car, it looks really good.

Sweet, fireball that was pretty much what I was looking to hear. Anyone with a differing opinion? Also fireball, any chance you can send me a quick pic you could send or post, doesnt need to be close in or super quality just of the car and wheel. And did you use that duplicolor or somethin else?
| Skell | 07-14-2005 10:02 PM |
the process isnt *really* all that surgical as som are makin it out to be..... just put on light coats so that nothing drips down... get som index cards. i painted my stock ones black- then silver again...... didnt do anything crazy like sandblasting them with kryptonite molecule nematoads or anything... just wash the wheels a lil... and pay DAMN CLOSE ATTENTION to how/where ur spraying the wheel.. do not F' UP!
heh.. *shrug*

Ok so i picked up supplies. i am going to do my aftermarket wheels first. Here is what i am going to do.
Wash them real good
sand them down
tape them off
4 coats primer
4 coats paint
4 coats clear
Is that all there is to it? if i missed a step let me know. I have 2 colors, graphite and flat black. I am going to do my stock wheels and my ASA JS1 wheels. Which color should i use for which set? i am thinking black on the stockers and graphite on the ASAs. Tell me what you think. Here is a pic of the ASAs. They are pretty dirty in this pic.

like I saoid in my previous post.
first clean, clean, clean then degrease with a quality auotmotive paint degreaser IE prep solv, reducer, lacquer thinner. then rough the existing finish with a light 3m scotch birght pad or a high # sand paper then degrease again, then paint first a GOOD self etching primer is good (not too thick ) then multible coats of light paint then clear and if it were me I would have the tires taken off before the painting as to be able to bet all of the bead area I would let them sit for atleast a week to cure as your not oven baking them . then remount your rubber and enjoy your new found color

scope the pics in this thread for final outcome of my rims (with a bigger lip) the car is silver and black stock wheels with the polished lip look...came out pretty good but some paint seaped in the cracks of the masking tape onto the lip so i gotta wet sand the lip and clear coat it here the thread

So I got my rims mounted on the wagon today and they look Hawt! Graphite painted WRX wheels. The only thing is I wish the lip was silver :( Has anyone tried to add the silver on a painted black rim? I was thinking of taping it off and using a silver paint marker. Also thought of using silver pinstriping tape, but am not sure if that will hold up. Any Ideas?
| Chi_San | 08-19-2005 02:45 AM |
I'd try some silver of the same kind of paint. The lip tends to take more abuse than the rest of the wheel, so you may just want to leave it.

Here's mine

Took remaining clear coat of with 320 grit wetsand paper for the non flat surfaces and a green scotchbrite pad on the flat surfaces. wiped it all down with denatured alcohol. Tried it with primer but it looked really crappy. worked better IMO with out primer as long as you don't go down to bare metal during prep.

I just had my stockers priced for a powdercoat (either flat bronze or gunmetal, cant decide) at $50 a wheel single coat (entire wheel not just front) or $60 two coats and cleared, and that stuff does not chip over time. Its basically whats done to the wheels out of the factory. I probably gonna do my prodrives also. Anybody have pics of powdercoated wheels.....put em up!
| silentbob343 | 08-19-2005 01:32 PM |
Powder coating is supposedly not good for wheels the heating process is said to weaken them. There was thread with people who had powder coated rims starting getting bends and such.
Believe it or not, thats up to you. Just throwing out something to think about before you spend the money. Im not sure whether or not I believe it, but perhaps emailing some rim manufacturers could shed some light on it.

I had my rims powder coated awhile back few years and they still hold up. Look good too. I sold the car so I don't have any pics. I think it cost me about 250 total
| RumblingREX | 08-21-2005 11:00 AM |
Powder coating is not good for the forged aluminum rims, STi rims. The stock WRX rims seem to hold up well for powder coating. Also I heard rumor with the STi rims, it depends a lot on temp and duration in the oven. There was talk of lower temp, longer duration maintains the integrity of the rim. Do a quick search and you may getting mroe in depth info.
| John2.5RS | 08-21-2005 07:08 PM |
I e-mail OZ to see if the Prodrive wheels would weaken during the powdercoating process but they didn't get back to me.

i just read through the whole thread and i'm really interested in doing this. i'm planning to do the following. think it will work?
1000 wetsand, 1500 wetsand until very smooth (not sure about this, should it be rough with 300-500 wetsand and then the green 3M thing like some people have done? or marble smooth then primed?)
denatured/rubbing alcohol to degrease
mask
primer
4 coats of paint(2 inside)
3 coats of clearcoat(1 inside)
also, what brand of self-etching primer is the best? does it say 'self-etching' on the can? how many layers is best?

Just so you know .. that process will probably take all day long ... it might be easier just to get some paint stripper and strip the paint off because the surface of the wheel will already be prepped from the factory to paint. Then use primer, then paint
| ricified | 10-02-2005 05:53 PM |
yea, i think i'm just gonna go aircraft stripper to get the oem clearcoat off, then sand, then primer, and paint.

I just finished mine this afternoon. It took me about 9 hours total split up between 2 days. I wetsanded with 400 grit. Degreased and dried. I used a blowdrier sometimes to speed up the drying process. I then put 2 coats of dark duplicolor primer followed by 3-4 coats of duplicolor graphite. Finished it off with 3 coats of clearcoat. I used a 10 minute drying time inbetween. That seemed to be perfect. Worked on rustproofing the underside while I waited. They look soo much better now with the graphite vs. the silver. It really was a lot of work, but I'm so glad I did it. I followed the instructions from previous posts. The index card thing really worked out well. I'll try to post pics soon. One tip...really watch where you paint. If there's a lot of dust, debris, or wind...crap settles on the paint it's and it's a pain in the arrsshh to deal with. Gotta let dry, re sand and paint etc. Learned the hard way. Take your time, it's worth it.

I'm going to have to paint my wheels, I unfortunatly had a meeting with a boulder that left my front right wheel scratched. Going to smoothe the scratches out, fill with something, then paint all 4 wheels. I'm going to give them a slight green tint to match the car. ;)

I am currently in process-
Coarse grit Emery Paper to get the curbing and other nasty spots off.
Medium Emery Paper to get clear coat off.
Fine as a finishing layer.
I am too lazy to wetsand.... will post pics when done. I am going for flat black, so I am gonna use 4-5 coats of duplicolor black with no clear.

currently in the process.
for everyone else, DON'T try to be thorough and use aircraft stripper to get the clearcoat off. i used that crap and one wheel is perfect, while another one has flakes of paint still coming off of it, both having stripper on it for the same amount of time and i have no idea why.
its dark, so i can't work on it anymore, but now i have to sand all the extra crap off before i prime it, and that's just a lot more hassle.
this is what i get for trying to be thorough, and now i have a lot moer work on my hands.
basically i spent 4 hours getting the wheels off, cleaning, stripping, and drying.
in conclusion, NO aircraft stripper.
oh, and even after applying aircraft stripper, there seems to be what looks like dirt on the rim. no amount of sanding or chemicals seems to be able to get it off.... what is it? should i just paint over it?

You did the smart thing, the aircraft stripper may just be a little too strong.
There is a spray can stripper that I used that was pretty strong, the MY04s come with a grey coat on them, so you are better off stripping that and the best part is the stripper will cut the left over brake dust and such that may be left behind. I will get them name of the stuff I used and post...

Well after riding on my 17's for longer than I wanted and the fact it snowed this past weekend, it's time to get the stockers back on. But not before painting them. Today I spent 3 hrs cleaning, fixing scratches with my Dremel, and wet sanding them. Tomorrow I'll paint them. Hopefully I'll get my new tires this week so I can have them mounted this weekend.

I'm debating what color to paint my stockers..Gold,black or bronze.

Javsboost, subie4life: Looks nice. I also recently painted a second set of stockers graphite and mounted some Dunlop Wintersport M3's on them. They look mean. Unfortunately, the tire shop did somethings and scratched off a bit of paint (down to the primer) in a few spots. I could probably touch it up (overspray), but I'd need to buy more paint and clear coat. I don't think I'm going to worry about it too much as they are my winter wheels.

Yeah, I think it'll be really easy to resand and paint a few chips once a year. I haven't had any chipping at all so far.

Does the paint hold up against tire mounting?
